Gibbs Field St. John’s boasts the Mid-Atlantic region’s top high school baseball facility. The Cadets play on newly renovated Gibbs Field. The surface and surrounding area’s underwent a multimillion dollar renovation in 2009 and now features synthetic grass which will allow the Cadets to work out year round on a professional quality field. In addition

to the new playing surface Gibbs Field features dugouts, 3 bullpens, 2 batting cages and a professional scoreboard. In 2013, a left field wall was installed completing the stadium look and feel. St. John’s baseball also recently purchased ‘Fungo Man’. This portable, and efficient practice machine holds over 250 balls and perfectly places 2
those balls anywhere on a baseball field automatically, programmably, and remotely. By using a coach friendly wireless controller that interfaces with a State-of-The-Art machine interface, the FM-150 frees coaches or players to precisely control speed, spin, position, and elevation that produce incredibly accurate ball placement.
Facilities Mona Clubhouse In October 2012, the Vincent “Cap” Mona ’61 Baseball Clubhouse construction was completed. This facility is the first in the area for a high school program and one of only a handful in the nation. It includes the varsity locker room with player’s bathroom/showers, coach’s offices and coach’s bathrooms/showers, a press box and a VIP viewing area. In the varsity locker room each player has his own locker with a personal safe. It is also outfitted with full video analysis capabilities including a 60 inch flat-screen television and 72 inch drop down screen with a projector mounted in the ceiling. As you go up the All American stairway to the 2nd Floor the wall is adorned with pictures of the High School All American players who have played for St. John’s. The VIP room holds a conference table for 8 people, a wet bar and seating for 15 to watch the baseball game. The Press Box is equipped with state of the art digital equipment for announcing the Cadets Baseball games.

Any St. John’s player in need of medical attention heads to the “Foster” training room, featuring top of the line physical therapy equipment. The head of the athletic training facilities is Michael Walker, MEd, ATC, CSCS. He oversees the health care of 30 men’s and women’s athletic teams throughout the school year. The program is designed to pro4
vide quality health care (evaluation, treatment and rehabilitation) to the injured student-athletes of St. John’s College High School. Mr. Walker is assisted by a team doctor, an intern and six student assistants. Dr. Marc Rankin is an orthopedic surgeon who provides medical coverage for the varsity football team and is available for student-athlete referral at his Providence Hospital office.
The Program
S
t. John’s has a long and storied baseball tradition. Founded in 1909, the baseball program was originally known as the St. John’s Preps. Sometime between 1909 and 1947 the program was disbanded and revived by Gene Augustopher and Joe Gallagher under the name of the Cadets. The Cadets won three conference championships during the 1950’s, and nine conference championships from 1960-1978. When Ed Gibbs took over in 1993, however, the once proud program was in a state of total disrepair. The Cadets had not captured a championship in over 15 years and had not been ranked in the Washington Post Top Ten in over a decade. The Cadets had won only 9 games in the previous two seasons combined and played in a poor facility that was in need of substantial upgrades. Gibbs resurrected the St. John’s program and constructed a baseball powerhouse whose name became synonymous with excellence. Gibbs’ first team went 13-12. His second team went 26-4, won the WCAC regular season title and began a remarkable string run of 13 straight 20 win seasons. Gibbs won 318 games, two conference tournament titles, eight regular season titles and saw his team ranked in the top ten by the Washington Post in 12 of his 14 years. He was selected as the Washington Post Coach of the Year in 2005 and on three different occasions was named WCAC Coach of the Year. Gibbs was inducted into the St. John’s Hall of Fame in 2008. The 2013 season will be Mark Gibbs tenth year in the St. John’s Program and his seventh as Head Coach. During, Coach Gibbs’ tenure the baseball team has grown from an area powerhouse to an elite program recognized throughout the country. St. John’s has been nationally ranked in seven of the last nine years by the most influential high school baseball publications in the United States including Baseball America, USA Today and Collegiate Baseball. St. John’s ascendance into the national spotlight reached a fever pitch in 2008 when Baseball America ranked the Cadets as the eighth best team in the country and featured the Cadets as its spotlight program in its national high school baseball preview issue. At the same time, Collegiate Baseball named the Cadets as the second best high school team in the nation. The Cadets proved worthy of the preseason acclaim by placing fourth in the Anderson Bat National Classic in Southern California, the nations top high school baseball tournament. During the event St. John’s defeated two teams ranked among the top 25 in the country, both of which hailed from Southern California, before succumbing to the eventual tournament champions
1909 St. John's Baseball Team
2011 WCAC Championship Team
in the winner’s bracket championship game. This marked the second straight year St. John’s had defeated two nationally ranked teams from California at the Anderson Bat National Classic. This success on the national level is unprecedented for a program from the Mid Atlantic region and validated the programs standing among the nation’s best. Through Coach Gibbs’ first six years as head coach, the Cadets have sent 40 players on to college baseball and have had eight players drafted by professional baseball teams. During that same time period, players from St. John’s have gone on to some of the most prestigious baseball pro5
grams in the nation including 2009 and 2011 College World Series participants the University of Virginia and the University of North Carolina. St. John’s has also produced 20 Washington Post All Met selections, seven high school All Americans and three WCAC Players of the Year. Coach Gibbs was honored in 2008 by being selected as a coach at the Under Armour All-American Game at Wrigley Field in Chicago, which was televised live on ESPN. 2011 marked the first WCAC Tournament Championship won under the helm of Mark Gibbs. In 2012 Coach Gibbs was selected as the WCAC Coach of the Year.

Season Outlook
T
Catchers
he Cadets enter the spring as defending WCAC regular season champions and fresh off of a record-setting 2012 season, during which they went 23-3 and had 20 consecutive wins. Mark Gibbs, 2012 WCAC Coach of the Year, said he is “very excited about the possibilities for this season. Every year we expect to compete for a conference title, and this year will be no different.”
Senior Cory Paton, a three-year varsity performer, assumes the starting role this season. A Washington and Lee commit, Paton has appeared in 13 games over the last two seasons and collected two hits in eight at-bats. Backup catchers include juniors Bo Williams, Peter Rudnicki and Alex Fogleman, as well as sophomore Brett Simon. “Although Cory hasn’t been an everyday player yet, he has been a part of the varsity for two years and a member of two championship teams,” Gibbs said. “Those experiences will be invaluable this season as he becomes the starter.”
Starting Pitchers Senior right-hander Phil Reese (6-0, 3.64), a Holy Cross signee, leads this year’s pitching staff. Reese started five games and won six as a junior, including a no-hitter. The Cadets have another strong right-hander in senior Harry Thomas (2-0, 4.10), who has signed to Delaware State. Thomas started three games last year, with six total appearances. Junior Garrett Pearson (right) tied for last year’s team lead in appearances with 10 and finished the season with a 3.82 ERA; the Cadets will look for him to carry a significant load this season. Juniors Kyle Lefelar and Vince Anninos, both right-handed, started games for the JV last year and will be expected to pitch big innings for the varsity squad. “This is a solid rotation with a tremendous amount of depth,” Gibbs said. “We feel like any of these guys can go out and win against anyone.”
Relief Pitchers
Cory Paton
The 2013 bullpen includes several strong returning pitchers who will carry the bulk of the innings. Right-handers Dan Behrman, Bobby Campbell, Errol Robinson (4 IP, 0 ERA) and Tony Pizzola will join southpaw George Pulizzi (5 IP, 0 ERA) in lending their experience to the team. Juniors Austin Band (RHP) and Joe Novosel (LHP) and sophomore A.J. Lee (RHP) also join the relief and will be expected to make an impact. Gibbs noted that “despite their inexperience, this group will be very exciting to watch and has the ability to dominate the back end of games.”
Errol Robinson
Infield The 2013 infield features two returning starters: Errol Robinson and Bobby Campbell. The infield will have a lot of interchangeable parts that will fluctuate as the season progresses. “This is an exciting and athletic group of players, which should make for a great defense and could be the best in recent memory,” Gibbs observed.
Middle Infield Senior Errol Robinson, an Ole Miss signee, is expected to slide from second base to shortstop. Robinson was a 2012 first team All-WCAC selection and led the squad with a .391 average and 10 doubles. Junior Jake Bernstein will take over at second base; he had a great season as the everyday shortstop for last year’s JV squad. Middle infield backups include returning varsity players Evan Flax, a Denison College commit, and Joey Walsh, as well as newcomers Austin Band and A.J. Lee.
Phil Reese
Corner Infield Senior Bobby Campbell returns at third base. A George Washington commit, Campbell had 12 RBI and two doubles in 18 starts last season. His backup will be Adrian Peralta, who had a good year with the JV in 2012. First base will have several Cadets providing coverage, including returning players Jake Band (a Dickinson commit), Harry Thomas and Garrett Pearson. Newcomers Peralta and Peter Rudnicki will also see some time on first this season.

Season Outlook Outfield
Designated Hitter and Lineup
The only returning starter is junior Brodie Leftridge, a 2012 second team AllWCAC selection. Leftridge hit .303, 19 RBI, seven doubles and three homeruns last season; he will open the year as the starting right fielder. Senior and Case Western commit, Josh Neal, a three-year varsity performer, will kick off the season as the everyday center fielder. Last season he started 13 games, primarily as designated hitter, and hit .270 with 17 runs and two doubles. Juniors Bo Williams and Vince Anninos will compete for the position in left field, and senior Dan Behrman could see action as a defensive replacement for all three outfield spots.
Designated hitter could be a revolving door throughout 2013. Junior Adrian Peralta has the inside track for this position, but Harry Thomas, Jake Band and Peter Rudnicki will also have the opportunity to see time there. Although this season’s lineup has a lot of new faces, two of last year’s top offensive performers, Erroll Robinson and Brodie Leftridge, return to lead the team. This year’s lineup is very versatile, with a lot of speed, and players up and down the order will be expected to perform in many different roles. The Cadets will also be looking for strong performances from Josh Neal, Evan Flax and Bobby Campbell, who saw significant playing time in 2012. “This offense can present a lot of problems for anyone. We expect to be very dynamic with the speed from top to bottom,” Gibbs said. “This group is also willing to play team baseball, which makes them even more dangerous.”
Schedule
Josh Neal
The Cadets’ 2013 schedule is the toughest the school has faced in many years. The WCAC is the area’s premiere conference, always incredibly balanced from top to bottom. Last year SJC won the regular WCAC season 15-1; the Cadets will look to repeat their success in 2013. Outside the WCAC, St. John’s will face Lake Braddock Secondary School (AAA Virginia State Champion), C.D. Hylton High School (AAA Virginia State Semifinalist) and Woodrow Wilson High School (D.C. City Champion), as well as Baltimore powerhouses Gilman School and Loyola Blakefield High School. The team will also travel to Bradenton, FL, in April for the IMG National Classic, where they will face off against teams from Georgia, Illinois, Florida, New York and Washington, D.C.

T
he Cadets’ 2012 season was certainly one for the record books. The squad collected 20 wins for the eighteenth time in the last nineteen years and team also broke the school’s single-season record for consecutive wins with 20. St. John’s set even more records with six shutouts, a .885 winning percentage and a 1.86 team ERA. In the end, the Cadets won WCAC regular season title 15-1, ending the season 23-3.
The Season Begins SJC opened the season by shutting out Sidwell Friends School 10-0. The Cadets then had their only regular season loss to Virginia powerhouse Lake Braddock Secondary School. During the game, the tying run was stranded on second base with two outs, ending in a 5-3 loss. The team came back strong against Maret School, winning the game decisively 10-0; pitcher Phil Reese also threw a no-hitter against the Fighting Frogs.
Spring Break The spring trip in April began with an 11-1 victory over St. Anne’s Belfield School (VA). The Cadets defeated the reigning private school champion Westchester Country Day School (NC) 9-2, with five solid innings behind Alex Deise. Jerry Chavarria led the hit parade against Caldwell Academy (NC) with five RBI, and Cam Kostyack had two hits and two RBI in the Cadets’ 12-2 victory. SJC was down 4-1 in fourth inning during a Friday night classic against Charlotte Country Day School (NC), but then the Cadets scored five runs behind doubles from Billy Webb and Erroll Robinson. The team tacked on two more runs in the sixth, and Danny O’Donnell earned the win with 3.33 shutout innings.
Conference Domination The beginning of conference play came with an 11-6 win over Gonzaga College High School. The middle of the order led the way as Michael Flax, Errol Robinson and Brodie Leftridge each collected multiple hits. Relief pitcher Danny O’Donnell fired 5.33 shutout innings to pick up the SJC win. A non-conference win over Gilman School saw a mixed team performance, but Alex Deise and Errol Robinson combined for the year’s second shutout. The Cadets won games against Bishop McNamara High School (9-1) and
