Facilities

t. John’s boasts the Mid-Atlantic regions top high school playing facility. The Cadets play on newly renovated Gibbs Field. The surface and surrounding area’s underwent a multimillion dollar renovation in 2009 and now features synthetic grass which will allow the Cadets to work out year round on a professional quality field. In addition to the new playing surface Gibbs Field features dugouts, 3 bullpens, 2 batting cages and a professional scoreboard. In 2010, St. John’s finished 14-1 at home. In Summer 2011 the ‘Cap Mona’ baseball locker room is scheduled to begin construction. This facility will be the first in the area for a high school program and one of only a handful in the nation. It will include the varsity locker room, coaches office, players and coaches bathrooms/showers, a press box and a VIP viewing area. St. John’s baseball also recently purchased ‘Fungo Man’. This portable, and efficient practice machine holds over 250 balls and perfectly places those balls anywhere on a baseball field automatically, programmably, and remotely. By using a coach friendly wireless controller that interfaces with a State-ofThe-Art machine interface, the FM-150 frees coaches or players to precisely control speed, spin, position, and elevation that produce incredibly accurate ball placement. The indoor facilities are equally impressive. The Gallagher Gym holds a 75 ft. indoor batting cage and is large enough ©FUNGOMAN for the players to work on all their baseball skills indoors. The Roth Gym is the winter home of the Cadet pitchers and features 6 portable indoor mounds. The Cadets strength training occurs inside the "Smith" Weight room. This state of the art training facility features the latest and most advanced weight training equipment. When injuries occur the St. John’s player’s head to the “Foster” training room, featuring top of the line physical therapy equipment.

S

St. John’s has a long and storied baseball tradition. The baseball program was founded in 1909, then as the St John’s Preps. Sometime between 1909 and 1947 the program was disbanded and revived under the name of the Cadets. The Cadets won 3 conference championships during the 1950’s, and 9 conference championships from 1960-1978. However when Ed Gibbs took over the SJC program in 1993 he found the once proud program in a state of total disrepair. The Cadets had not captured a championship in over 15 years and had not been ranked in the Washington Post Top Ten in over a decade. The Cadets had won only 9 games in the previous two seasons combined and played in a poor facility that was in need of substantial upgrades. Gibbs resurrected the St. John’s program and constructed a baseball power whose name became synonymous with excellence. Gibbs’ first team went 13-12, his second team went 26-4, won the WCAC regular season title and began a remarkable string run of 13 straight 20 win seasons. Gibbs won 318 games, 2 conference tournament titles, 8 regular season titles and saw his team ranked in the top ten by the Washington Post in 12 of his 14 years. He was selected as the Washington Post Coach of the Year in 2005 and was selected on 3 different occasions as the WCAC Coach of the Year. Gibbs was inducted into the St. John’s Hall of Fame in 2008. The 2011 season will be Mark Gibbs 8 th in the St. John’s Program and 5th as Head Coach. Coach Gibbs eight years in the St. John’s program has seen the baseball team move from an area powerhouse to an elite program recognized throughout the country. St. John’s has been nationally ranked in 6 of the last 7 years by the most influential high school baseball publications in the United States including Baseball America, USA Today and Collegiate Baseball. St. John’s ascendance into the national spotlight reached a fever pitch in 2008 when Baseball America ranked the

Cadets as the 8 th best team in the country and featured the Cadets as their spotlight program in their national high school baseball preview issue. Collegiate Baseball tabbed the Cadets as the 2nd best high school team in the land. The Cadets proved worthy of the preseason acclaim by placing 4th in the Anderson Bat National Classic in Southern California, the nations top high school baseball tournament. During the event St. John’s defeated two teams ranked among the top 25 in the country, both of which were from Southern California, before succumbing to the eventual tournament champions in the winner’s bracket championship game. This marked the second straight year St. John’s had defeated two nationally ranked teams from California at the Anderson Bat National Classic. This success on the national level is unprecedented for a program from the Mid Atlantic region and validated the programs standing among the nation’s best. Through Coach Gibbs’ first seven years the Cadets have sent 34 players into college baseball and have had 3 players drafted by professional baseball teams. During those seven years, players from St. John’s have gone on to some of the most prestigious college programs in the nations including 2009 College World Series participants the University of Virginia and the University of North Carolina. St. John’s has also produced 22 Washington Post All Met selections, 6 high school All Americans and 2 WCAC Players of the Year. Coach Gibbs was honored in 2008 by being selected as a coach at the Under Armour All-American Game at Wrigley Field in Chicago, which was televised live on ESPN.

2011 Varsity Cadets

Season Outlook

E

CATCHER After graduating two different three-year varsity performers at catcher, Coach Gibbs is looking to junior Jerry Chavarria to fill the void behind the dish. “You can’t replace guys like Farber and Kirsch, but Jerry has caught everyday at the JV level for two years, and we think he is ready.” Junior Derek Carter and first year varsity players Cory Paton and James Rader could also see time at the position.

xpectations are high for the Cadets, who are coming off of a 24-win season in 2010. The team returns 13 varsity performers, including the entire infield and two of the three outfield positions. Head Coach Mark Gibbs is entering his fifth season with an 84 and 24 record, and is looking forward to coaching this year’s team. “I really like this group, and it’s going to be an exciting team,” said Gibbs. “We expect to compete for a conference championship.” With seniors starting at 6 of the 8 everyday positions and a group of talented young players filling in at a few key spots, the Cadets should once again provide a tough challenge to the WCAC. STARTING PITCHING ?FN8I; “The staff will be strong but inexperienced this season,” said Gibbs, who is looking to University of Virginia bound Nick Howard to anchor the staff as the number one starter. The right-hander was a top of the rotation pitcher last season, starting seven games. He is the only returning pitcher to log more than 20 innings in 2010. He finished with a 3.39 ERA in 31 innings pitched. Other pitchers who will see starting action include senior Brady Schmitt, a USC-Aiken signee, junior Alex Deise, senior Bobby Boyd (VCU), and senior Justin Korenblatt. All logged varsity innings on the mound in 2010. “We are really excited about the staff,” said Gibbs. “We have 5 or 6 guys who can start, so we feel like we have a lot of options.”

RELIEF PITCHING Junior right-hander Derek Carter will lead the bullpen. Carter made 10 appearances for the Cadets last season. He won five games and earned honorable mention All-WCAC honors. Coach Gibbs stated, “Having a guy like Derek, who won five games last year, coming out of the pen is a huge advantage.” Returning right-handers Nick Calomeris and Bo Flowers will provide senior leadership in the pen. Senior side-armer, Nate Meiners, will also be featured in the bullpen. The new comers include juniors Michael Flax, Mitchell Kirsch, Danny O’Donnell, and freshman Corey Howard. All three juniors have pitched key innings at the JV level last year.

INFIELD The Cadets backbone this season should be the infield. Three-year letter winning seniors will man all four positions. Gibbs stated, “The infield will be the strength of the team. The great thing is that these guys will not face a situation that they have not seen in the previous two years on varsity.”

J:?D@KK

CORNERS Seniors Nate Meiners and Joe Camp will man the corners for the Cadets this season. Meiners will return as the third baseman for the Cadets. He is a three-year starter in the infield, and was honorable mention All-WCAC in 2010. Joe Camp, a Concord signee, will play first base. Joe hit .420 in 2010 and was also named honorable mention All-WCAC. Junior Michael Flax will serve as the backup at third. Backups at first will include juniors Mitchell Kirsch and James Manuel, as well as freshman Corey Howard. MIDDLE The middle infield will feature Nick Howard at shortstop and Brady Schmitt at second base. Howard, a threeyear starter, was named All-WCAC in 2010. He also earned All DC Extra and honorable mention All-Met while hitting .371 with nine doubles and 25 runs batted in. Schmitt is a three-year letter winner and two year starter. He earned 3rd Team All-WCAC and All DC Extra honors in 2010 while knocking in 17 runs in 27 games. Flax, Carter, and newcomer Cam Kostyack will backup Schmitt and Howard at the middle infield positions.

Season Outlook 9FP;

OUTFIELD The Cadet outfield returns 2010 starters Bobby Boyd and Justin Korenblatt. Boyd, a three-year starter, will anchor the outfield in center. Boyd, a VCU signee, was 3rd team All-WCAC in 2010 and All DC Extra. He hit .372 with 20 stolen bases. Korenblatt is a three-year letter winner and a 2010 starter. He gathered 20 hits in last years campaign while batting .328. He will play right field for the Cadets in 2011. “Bobby and Justin both have a lot of experience, and they are going to do a ton for us both offensively and defensively,” said Coach Gibbs. Senior Nick Papillo is the lone returning outfielder vying for the left field spot. He appeared in 19 games last season. He will compete with juniors Kyle Hamer, Billy Webb, Abram White, and Manuel for innings in left field.

D.H. AND LINEUP Coach Gibbs said, “Designated hitter is going to be revolving door this season based on who is pitching.” Flax, Hamer, Papillo , Kirsch, Manuel, and Webb could all potentially see some time as designated hitter throughout the course of the year. Offensively, the Cadets will be very versatile this season, mixing speed and power. Gibbs stated, “Overall, I really like the balance in this lineup. We are going to be able to play a little small ball, but we will also be able to produce some power through the middle of the order.”

Season Outlook SCHEDULE The 2011 schedule will be full of tough challenges for the Cadets. The non-conference schedule includes perennial New Jersey State title contenders, Don Bosco. St. John’s will be matched against IAC champion St. Alban’s, in a long anticipated game played at University of Maryland. The Cadets will also face two top Northern Virginia teams in Lake Braddock and Brooke Pointe. The team will travel south once again, and play some of the best teams in the eastern United States at the South Florida Classic. In-conference, St. John’s looks to remain a top team in 2011. The Cadets have not finished the WCAC regular season lower than second place since 2002. However, Coach Gibbs knows all of the games will be tough. He said, “Inside the conference there are no easy games. Every year the balance of the conference gets better, but we are really excited about our team.”

SEASON IN REVIEW

2010 Season in Review

I

n 2010, the Cadets returned 16 Varsity letter winners, and expectations were high with starters returning at seven of the nine positions. St. John’s started the season with two shut wins in out of conference games against Maret (11-0) and Georgetown Prep (5-0). E`Zb ?fnXi[ tossed five shut out innings in the win against Prep. Conference play began with a tight game against rival, Gonzaga. In dramatic fashion, 9fYYp 9fp[ blasted a homerun late in the bottom of the 6th to give the Cadets the edge over the Eagles 3 – 2. Wins over St. Mary’s Ryken (6-4) and O’Connell (8-6) put the Cadets record at 5 - 0 heading into a meeting with Good Counsel. The game featured two teams ranked in the top ten by the Washington Post ranked teams. Despite a six strong innings by Nick Howard, St. John’s lost 4-3 to Good Counsel. The tying and winning runs were on base in the bottom of the 7th. The Cadets rebounded from the loss and beat DeMatha on the road 7-3 behind D`b\ 9fn`\ ’s 6 innings on the mound and three hits at the plate. St. John’s then hosted Baltimore powerhouse, Calvert Hall. The Cadet won 7-6 in comeback fashion. Justin Korenblatt recorded two hits and two RBI’s in the win, while ;\i\b :Xik\i picked up the win in relief. The Cadets were 7-1 record heading into the Tampa Jesuit Tournament. The Cadets started hot in Tampa beating Fordham Prep (NY) 15 to 2 and Regis Jesuit 8 to 4. The Cadets then fell to the nationally ranked host team, Tampa Jesuit, and to local Florida team, St. Pete Catholic, the following day. After returning to D.C., St. John’s ran off an impressive 14 game winning streak that carried them through the rest of the regular season.

It started with back-to-back 4 to 3 wins over Ireton and Paul VI. The wins were highlighted by strong senior performances. Senior pitcher, <i`Z D\c\e\p tossed six innings against Ireton, allowing only one unearned run. Senior catcher, ;i\n =XiY\i, went two for three with a homerun against Paul VI. The Cadets then beat McNamara (9-4) and used a two run homerun by senior Bpc\ B`ijZ_ to defeat Sidwell Friends 9-4, improving their record to 13 and 3. St. John’s started the second half of conference play with an impressive 16 to 0 thrashing of Gonzaga. Two days later the Cadet’s handily beat St. Mary’s Ryken 12 to 5. After a field dedication ceremony for 18-year head coach and current assistant, Ed Gibbs, St. John’s pulled off another exciting comeback, beating O’Connell 7 to 6. Carter picked up the win in relief with three scoreless innings, and senior Bo Flowers went three for four with five RBI’s. The team then flipped the tables on Good Counsel and handed them a one run loss, 3-2, behind strong pitching performances by both Bowie and Howard. To round out the month of April, St. John’s faced DeMatha and prevailed 13 to 10 in an exciting back and forth game. The Cadet’s opened the month of May schedule with a 10 to 2 win over a top Baltimore team, Spalding. St. John’s finished up the regular season with wins over Ireton (3-1), Paul VI (11-1) and McNamara (18-9). The team finished the regular season 22 and 3 and 15-1 in conference. The Cadets were ranked number one in the area by the Washington Post, and took the number one seed into the conference playoffs. In a two day rain soaked affair the Cadet’s beat Ireton 8 to 2 in the opening round of the playoffs. A few days later the season ended with an 8 to 6 loss to DeMatha in the semifinals at University of Maryland.
