COACHES
Dear Parents and Students, It is hard to believe it is already time for another exhilarating season of girls’ ice hockey! After taking home the inaugural WCAC championship title last year, I know our Cadets are as excited to begin league play as we are to watch them in action. From club team in 2015-2016, to MAGHL A champions in 2016-2017 and white division champions in 2018-2019, to WCAC champions in 2018-2019, the team is focused on building on previous success. Entering the 2019-2020 season, the varsity team has nine returning players and have moved up to the top MAGHL division, while the JV team is competing in the blue division. Though a step up in competition, the varsity team is optimistic of achieving a winning season and competing in both the MAGHL and WCAC playoffs.

Working hard on the ice and in the classroom is the hallmark of the St. John’s athletic program and this team is no exception. They motivate one another to strive for success both as athletes and students, and they support each other throughout the entire year. Girls’ ice hockey at St. John’s is not just another sports program; it is a way of living Lasallian, where the coaches and students learn, study, teach and assist one another, enhancing the school’s tradition of building an educational community of faith and service. My best wishes to Coach Woodruff, her coaching staff, the team and the entire ice hockey community for an exciting and successful season! Sincerely,
Jeffrey W. Mancabelli President

GIRLS’ ICE HOCKEY HISTORY
2002-03 SJC Hockey Team
T
he dream of a St. John’s College High School varsity ice hockey team took root in the first days of the 2001-2002 school year, when four freshman hockey players, Hilary Murphy ’05, Alex Henry ’05, David Sauer ’05 and Jeff Radner ’05, convinced their parents to approach the SJC administration about starting an ice hockey program at the school. After preparing and proposing a projected budget and plan to the administration, the decision was made that the ice hockey program could proceed if at least half of the money to support the proposed budget was raised. To the administration’s surprise (and delight), within two weeks the parents had raised more than three-quarters of the proposed budget from interested families. The dream became a reality as the Cadet Ice Hockey Club took the ice for the first time during the 2002-2003 school year, marking the first era of girls in ice hockey at St. John’s. Over the following decade, the St. John’s Ice Hockey Club would continue operating as a co-ed team and a new generation of players was formed as girls’ interest in ice hockey grew exponentially. It was not until the end of the 2014-2015 season that Head Coach Drew McIntyre approached Ali House ’17 to determine her interest in an all-girls ice hockey program at St. John’s. House diligently began recruiting, and in May 2015, she approached the school administration. She was told that if she could get 13 girls to sign up, the school would approve the program. The first interest meeting was held on May 22, 2015, and 20 girls signed up, so the girls’ ice hockey program at St. John’s was approved with full support from the administration. The girls had succeeded in separating from the boys’ team, establishing the first St. John’s all-girls ice hockey club team. House said “…with the help of four upperclassmen, Jessie Castor ’16, Kyleigh Peterson ’17, Bela Sayle ’17 and Sophia Poulos ’17 – they recruited additional players – an amazing first team was built! Of course, the creation of this program also took place because of the support and dedication of our parents. Ice time was expensive, and Ms. Sayle (Bela’s mom) came up with the awesome idea of making and selling blankets as a fundraiser to offset some of the cost for the
players. My mom (Maggie House) played a huge role in organizing support from parents as well. “Throughout this entire process, the boys’ program had our backs and believed in us. They supported us in practice, in games and at school. They never made us feel less-than and were generous in sharing their equipment, transportation and hockey knowledge with us. Parents of these boys were also incredibly supportive and always offered words of encouragement to us. “Without the support, hard work and belief in this program from each and every person above (and I’m sure many more who I am forgetting), this program could never be what it is today!” St. John’s girls’ ice hockey club team made its debut on the ice during the 2015-2016 season playing local teams. The girls’ ice hockey program continued to grow, joining the Mid-Atlantic Girls Hockey League (MAGHL) in 2016, garnering a 9-1-0 overall record and taking home the 2016-2017 MAGHL “A” Division championship title. This gave the Cadets an opportunity to advance to the MAGHL White Division in 2017-2018, but unfortunately playing higher level teams resulted in a 0-6-0 season. Despite their losses, the girls came back stronger and hungry the following year. Their effort and grit encouraged so many girls to sign up that two teams were formed and St. John’s girls’ ice hockey became a varsity sport. They closed out the 2018-2019 season with a 7-3-0 record, marking an important milestone in the St. John’s girls’ ice hockey program history as the JV team won the MAGHL Blue Division championship and the varsity team clenched the MAGHL White Division championship and the 2018-2019 inaugural WCAC championship title. Taking home both championships advanced the varsity Cadets to the top tier MAGHL Red Division in 2019-2020. The girls’ ice hockey team currently plays in the Mid-Atlantic Girls Hockey League and the Washington Catholic Athletic Conference. The team’s home is located at the Rockville Ice Arena, where it has games or practice four to five times per week during the season, which runs from November through February.

n 2013, St. John’s entered into discussions with the Rockville Ice Arena to invest in and make Rink 1 the Cadets’ home ice. A long-term agreement was signed in late 2014, and SJC ice hockey began enjoying these benefits with the 20152016 season. With this investment, St. John’s hockey enjoys: • Signage, a new scoreboard, school logos on display and the ice and walls painted with St. John’s school colors to give it the feel of a home rink • A lighted sign that announces this location as the “Home of St. John’s Ice Hockey” • Preferred ice time for practices and games at the premier ice hockey arena in the Washington metro area • The TW Perry Ice Hockey Center with locker rooms (complete with showers and bathrooms), a second-floor team room with space for study halls, a video screen for pre-game prep, windows overlooking the ice and a suite of offices

atie Woodruff’s hockey career began on the frozen ponds of Michigan, where some of her earliest memories are playing on skates as a young child. Today, as a USA Hockey-certified coach, Woodruff has spent her time coaching youth travel hockey and school-based teams. She was a successful coach with Kettler Capital’s Iceplex in Arlington, VA, and with the Northern Virginia Ice Dogs. In 2015, Woodruff joined St. Stephens & St. Agnes School to build their middle school hockey program. Under her leadership as head coach, the program grew from a club team meeting one day a week to a fully established, competitive, five-day-a-week team playing a 15-game schedule each year. One of the few women to serve as a hockey coach in the greater Washington, DC, area, she is focused on giving the next generation the skills to compete in hockey at any level they choose. Woodruff plays on a number of local adult leagues and continues to train as a competitive age group triathlete.
JUNIOR VARSITY COACH HILARY MURPHY ’05
H
ilary Murphy ’05 is one of the founding members of the SJC hockey program, and she is really excited to be a part of the coaching staff for the SJC girls’ hockey program. When she began at Villanova, there was no women’s hockey team. Murphy established a team in her sophomore year, and they are still a successful team. She earned a bachelor’s degree in psychology with a minor in business from Villanova. After college, she continued playing competitively for the Chesapeake Bay Lightning women’s team, which is a USA Hockey national bound team. She was a head coach for MYHA and program director for the U12 Younger Girls program. Murphy is also a USA Hockey level five-certified coach. Overall, she has been coaching for 10 years and has taught all ages and skill levels. In addition to MYHA, she facilitated spring/summer clinics and camps and coached at USA Hockey’s U15 National Camp in St. Cloud, MN. When Murphy is not on the ice, she is a middle school counselor for Montgomery County Public Schools.
