SATURDAY 14TH | 7.30PM OXFORD BAROQUE Jeremy Summerly director
BACH’S CHRISTMAS VESPERS After their successful debut in the Festival last year, Oxford Baroque present a unique, historically informed performance of J.S. Bach’s festive Magnificat. Composed for the Christmas Day Vespers of 1723 at the Thomaskirche in Leipzig, it would have featured significantly as part of the liturgical music for the service. This performance invites the listener to hear Bach’s exuberant masterpiece alongside the beautiful chant propers, hymns and polyphony of the stile antico, in the context for which it was originally intended. The programme also features a magnificent cantata by Johann Kuhnau, Bach’s predecessor in Leipzig, formerly mistakenly attributed to Bach as Cantata 142.
Rapidly gaining attention as one of the most exciting early music ensembles in the UK, Oxford Baroque has marked out a characteristically vibrant sound. Originally founded at the University of Oxford, the group is now blossoming from an intimate collaborative relationship between some of the finest young singers and players, working together under the experienced direction of Jeremy Summerly and the scholarship of David Lee. Bach - Magnificat in E flat, BWV243a Kuhnau - Uns ist ein Kind geboren Gabrieli - Hodie Christus natus est Franck - Ein Kind ist uns geboren “Ably directed by Jeremy Summerly, whose scholarship, musicianship and enthusiasm permeated the performance … an exciting set-up of young, professional early music specialists … Oxford Baroque is one ensemble to watch closely.” Bachtrack £25/£20/£15/£10

Victoria’s glorious Missa Gaudeamus was written for All Saints Day, traditionally one of the most extrovert feasts in the calendar. Alongside this joyful reference to Mary we juxtapose some of the intimate music associated with her at Christmas time: not least the rare seven-voice motet Beata es Virgo Maria by Verdelot, which also includes the Ave Maria text. Bruckner’s Ave Maria adds an extra and perhaps unexpected dimension to settings of this text, surely one of the most popular of all time. Programme includes: Verdelot - Beata es Virgo Maria Bruckner - Ave Maria Guerrero - Maria Magdalene Victoria - Missa Gaudeamus Victoria - Ave Maria a 8 “An uncanny ability to increase emotional intensity so subtly that you don’t realise it’s happening. DECEMBER FRIDAY 20TH | 7.30PM THE CARDINALL’S MUSICK Andrew Carwood director
ANGELS AND ARCHANGELS Angels are as much part of Christmas as the shepherds, the wise men and the donkey. At Christmas the Angels come to earth and sing the song of joy and peace to all people. This programme tells the story with five settings of Hodie Christus natus est from composers as diverse as Palestrina and Poulenc (in memory of the 50th anniversary of his death). Victoria’s darkly brooding Missa O magnum mysterium provides a mass sequence for the first half. Then we meet Raphael and Michael, cohorts of Gabriel in Tippett’s Plebs angelica before culminating in Isaac’s paen of praise, Angeli Archangeli. Since its foundation in 1989, The Cardinall’s Musick has been a highly successful and innovative ensemble. Taking its name from the sixteenthcentury English cardinal Thomas Wolsey, the group’s reputation grew through its extensive study of music from the English Renaissance. The Cardinall’s Musick has produced a number of CDs to great critical acclaim, and has garnered a number of awards, among them five Gramophone Awards including the prestigious Recording of the Year in 2010.

SATURDAY 21ST | 7.30PM THE BRABANT ENSEMBLE Stephen Rice director
THE DIVINE INCARNATION The Brabant Ensemble, noted for bringing to light hidden gems of Renaissance polyphony, explores a selection of Christmastide motets by Rore, Lassus, Victoria and other sixteenth-century greats, alongside Rore’s Mass based on one of the greatest hits of the century, the chanson Doulce mémoire. Both Cipriano de Rore and Orlandus Lassus were described by their contemporaries as ‘il divino’, so great was the respect in which they were held in their time. Both composers made giant strides in increasing the expressivity of Renaissance music and illuminating the texts which they set with glorious harmony and perfect declamation. Described as “perhaps England’s most accomplished interpreter of Renaissance sacred music” (International Record Review), The Brabant Ensemble has built an international reputation for high-quality performance of sixteenth-century masterpieces, with a particular emphasis on lesser-known composers.

Founded in 1998, the Ensemble has recorded 12 CDs for Hyperion since 2006, three of which have been shortlisted for Classic FM Gramophone Awards. The Brabant Ensemble acknowledges with gratitude the support of the UK’s Arts and Humanities Research Council. Programme includes: Lassus - Resonet in laudibus Rore - Missa Doulce mémoire Rore - Fratres: Scitote Victoria - Alma redemptoris mater Clemens non Papa - O magnum mysterium “An extraordinary unanimity of ensemble, security of intonation and intelligence that surpass all rivals in the repertory.” International Record Review £25/£20/£15/£10 (concessions 10% discount)

Stephen Layton conducts and they are joined by four outstanding soloists. The Choir’s new recording of the Christmas Oratorio on Hyperion will be launched at this concert.
