AMERICANA ‘18 ——
The idea for a year of American music in 2018 originated in a day-long celebration of the centenary of one of the iconic musical figures of the last century, Leonard Bernstein. The bewildering diversity of his activities as a pianist, conductor, composer, educator and humanitarian, served as a reminder of the equally diverse influences that have inspired American composers over the last two hundred years or so. Americana ‘18 tries to highlight some of the wonderful breadth of this music, whilst of course recognising that even in a year we can scratch the surface. Bernstein is rightly celebrated, as are his influences, teachers, mentors and contemporaries. We also hear music by mavericks ranging from Cage, Harrison to Feldman and Cowell, and of course the great Charles Ives, whilst taking in Ragtime, Hollywood, Broadway, Minimalists, Neo-Romantics and the popular choral composers of today, such as Eric Whitacre and Morten Lauridsen.

STEPHEN MONTAGUE'S 75TH BIRTHDAY —— Stephen Montague
HIGH NOON The celebrations begin with a performance of Stephen’s joyously unique Horn Concerto for klaxon horn soloist and an orchestra of automobiles, taking place around Smith Square. Fri 9 March 12.00pm Free admission
AFTER IVES… AND BEYOND “My birthday begins with the High Noon performance of my automobile concerto and ends 8 hours later with a virtuosic piano concerto reflecting a lifetime interest in living and working the full spectrum of music, not just one corner. The array of performers and friends is a rainbow of outstanding international virtuosos, brilliant conservatory students and some amazingly talented school children. Aesthetically it’s a grand cornucopia of music theatre, blues, minimalism, folk music, live-electronics, and the avantgarde. The final concerto concert melts into an all night performance of Satie’s Vexations and my actual 75th birthday the next morning, 10 March.”
