3. VARY HEIGHTS TO RESPOND TO STREET

Safety, ample outdoor space and a response to the street were three goals that the hearth was designed to achieve. I isolated all auto-focused programs closest to the street in order to create a car-free zone in the courtyard area. Secondly all residential units face inward to ensure that there are eyes on the courtyard at all times. Rooftop and balcony spaces were utilized.

SOCIAL ZONES

The Hearth is a courtyard focused housing configuration that strives to create a safe and social environment for residents of all ages. This project challenged me to use the limited site space efficiently while creating a balance between building space and green space. GROUND FLOOR PLAN

Alternative is an architecture competition that I entered in to challenge my environmental control systems knowledge. I along with four other of my talented architecture friends designed this elementary school, in Mongolia, which utilized passive heating and cooling strategies to provide a comfortable educational setting for all users. CENTRI [PETAL]

KINETIC ARCHITECTURE SPRING 2016

CENTRI [PETAL] is a kinetic shading device that I took a lead in designing while attending the Emily Carr University of Art and Design in Vancouver, BC. The project challenged me to learn SOLIDWORKS and MODO within a span of four weeks in order to communicate the custom design components used to create a working system. [In collaboration with: Claire Breyen, Amy Cripps, William Franklin]

The Altana is a row house system that incorporated an elevation pattern to create an evocative rhythm on the street. A designed green alley between blocks adds another dynamic to this housing system by creating a comfortable circulation artery.

PATH ALONG CIRCULATION AXIS

GREEN ALLEY The green alley creates a more efficient use of space by creating a secondary program within the block. This green alley is for pedestrian use only.

BLOCK FLOOR PLAN The Altana is designed for efficiency. Each unit boasts a front and back porch along with a balcony space.

Permeable paving is used to soften the surface texture while providing a system for water drainage.

Designed planters act as a sculptural form that provides niches for users to relax in. Wooden benches give the alley a sense of warmth while providing a comfortable sitting surface for users.

During my time at Ferguson & Shamamian, I had the opportunity to learn about the importance and beauty of detail. Since almost every component in the residential designs we worked on included custom work, accuracy in details was vital. I learned to use AutoCAD and SketchUp with efficiency and cleanliness to communicate my iterations with clarity. Below are elevation design iterations that I worked on for a residential vestibule.

PROFESSIONAL

INTERNSHIP WORKS 2016-2017

The various internship experiences that I have had taught me invaluable lessons. I learned to be critical of my own work so that I can ensure and produce the highest quality designs in an efficient manner. The following pages display some of the professional works that I have done during my time at Ferguson & Shamamian and Julie Hawkins Design.

For this wine room, I had the opportunity to experiment with floor patterns and materials. Additionally, I worked on creating an aesthetically pleasing wine rack for our client. Below is an elevation iteration that I produced for my design team.

As an intern, I worked on Ferguson & Shamamian’s monograph series. The site plan I created with AutoCad (below) was used for a competition. I worked closely with the rendering department to complete this piece. The floor plans (right) were two different residences that I transformed into monograph standards using AutoCad.

During my 2016 Fall Term, I had the great opportunity to intern with an interior architecture firm in Eugene, Oregon. Julie utilized my talents by creating some hand drawn interior renderings like the one presented below.

While working with Julie, I was taught how to produce presentation drawings for clients. This is an iteration of a vestibule elevation that I produced.

CONCEPTS

PERSONAL PROJECTS SUMMER 2016

I grew up drawing and creating with my hands. In fact, I never utilized digital media until my third year in architecture school. I quickly fell in love with photoshop because it allowed me to communicate my thoughts with clarity. Visualization has always been a strength of mine and photoshop was a way for me to imagine my designs in a realistic environment. The following renderings are some concept ideas that I created to practice my digital skills.

15

S IER RA The mountains act as the backbone for the plains that extend through the foreground. The Sierra alludes to this idea by incorporating a large wall that acts as a structural anchor. Programs extend from this wall and views open up to the seemingly infinite land beyond.

K ANT EN

A small residence sits comfortably in front of an impressive range. Acute angles and monochromatic colors blend the Fjord’s form into the wintery background environment. Dualities of light and dark and large and small are design principles that help shape this design.

The Kanten will test any individual’s bravery. Located on an ocean side cliff in Denmark, this concrete structure hangs precariously off the edge. This sculptural form uses physical elements to frame views and establishes an axis that directs the visitor to a breathtaking view.

THE PROCESS O R I G I N A L S K E TC H E S 2012 - 2017

Sketching and drawing is one my most recognized skills. Drawing helps me think with fluidity and clarity. It is a way to document my thoughts with immediacy. I find that sketching my stream of consciousness often leads to valuable ideas and concepts. The following pages display some sketches that I have made during the schematic stages of various projects.

Dear Recruiter, It is with great pleasure that I highly recommend Stephen Jordan for an entry-level position in an architectural firm. Stephen was in a number of my housing courses and studio. He excelled in all. He is always prepared, highly motivated, and his work is always top notch. In addition, he has a great attitude and work ethic. He works extremely well with others. I believe he would be a wonderful addition to any firm. Michael Fifield, FAIA Professor and Director of the Housing Specialization Program Department of Architecture University of Oregon
