stefanie j. sebald BArch (1st class Hons) MArch Urban Design
Architecture Urban Design Exhibition Design Portfolio 2009-2016
Hello... I’m Stefanie, an architect and urban designer based in London. After graduating from Victoria University of Wellington with a BArch (first class hons.) in 2010 and from The Bartlett School of Architecture (UCL) with an MArch in Urban Design in 2013, over the past six years I gained a broad range of experience in architecture and spatial design. I have worked as part of both small and large practices, as freelancer in a multi-disciplinary team, and I have led numerous jobs as project architect from conception through to completion. Projects I was involved with as key personnel include high-end private residential developments, interior fit-outs, exhibition design, conceptual design, visualisations, large scale residential developments, and urban design projects in New Zealand, Germany and the UK. I like simple forms, unambiguous communication, sustainable design and working out the nuts and bolts of a project until everything works perfectly. (Yes, I’m German after all.) This portfolio is divided into two parts ‘Small Scale’ and ‘Large Scale’ to represent the diverse range of my previous experience. Physical copies and complete sets of working drawings / other samples of current work will be sent / shown on request as will details for referees.

Three stylistically diverse buildings were ‘stitched together’ into a linear exhibition space that guides the visitor through the large number of artefacts with both spatial planning and a clean and modern way finding system. This allows each of the buildings to retain its unique architecture, while uniting the spaces into a cohesive, rich visitor experience.

Workshop e was invited to completely re-imagine the concept of the Otago Settlers Museum in Dunedin, NZ after the original museum was expanded in a major renovation that combined three stylistically disparate adjacent buildings to form the new home for the expansive exhibition.
Each building was allowed to retain its personality while selecting a common joinery and furniture material palette to link the vast spaces and create a coherent visitor experience. An innovative, modern and engaging permanent exhibition experience was designed with opportunities for
temporary exhibits. Concept, development and implementation were completed successfully on a tight program.

The original design was adapted into five types. A modular organisation allows the system to get adopted into a variety of combinations and lengths to suit many needs. The objects are exhibited safely in the internally lit case with simple lines and materials.

This mixed-use scheme creates 98 flats and a large retail space in two separate structures around a shared podium in Dalston, East London. The difficult East London site is confined by existing railway tracks and main roads on three sides and existing buildings on the fourth side.
The Kingsland High Street building is designed to fit within its immediate context of the High Street. It is considered as part of this family of buildings, sharing the same characteristics, such as use of brick, a more solid and less glassy facade, and a scale and proportion similar to its neighbours.
This page (continued): 4. The dotted line indicates extent of potential future development above the station. 5. Windows to the flank of the northern property adjacent to the station would have to be considered by Network Rail, should they propose an over station development.

A simple palette of brass, stained oak, and warm timber tones marries the concept of East London industrial chic with the notion of the cobble stone alley ways typical for the area. A deliberately moody atmosphere is illuminated strategically by a strip skylight, a custom designed brass mesh light fitting and indirect lighting housed in the timber mailbox surround and alcove shelving. 02
Based on the uncertain future of the physical book this library is designed as 4x4x4m modular building to enable not only

expansion of the spaces, which is planned for the future, but also enabling the possible need for contraction of stack spaces.
The overall aesthetic is kept industrial to evoke the idea of on-going expansion and contraction.

Inspired by New Zealand’s striking landscapes in 2005 I started to explore digital photography initially using natural light and objects only.
For previous employers I did architectural photography (ref. p.26 - 29). Recently I started exploring portrait photography.
