SGI Scholarship Allows Eight Seniors to Graduate By Matthew Hagan The Senior Class of 2012 at St. John’s University decided to leave behind a different type of Senior Gift that would truly leave a lasting legacy. Under the guidance of former Senior Senator, Ellen McBurney, the Senior Class decided that their gift should continue to give back to the students of St. John’s. From this main goal, the Senior Class agreed upon their new gift to the school – the Senior Scholarship Fund. This scholarship provides financial aid to students who would not be able to finish their last year at St. John’s due to financial obligations. Through donations of $18.70, a reference to the University’s founding year, the Senior Class was proud to raise over $10,000 for the fund.

Rising Juniors from various majors applied for consideration. Over 70 applications were reviewed for eligibility by a committee comprising current and past SGI Executive Board members, Senior Class members and the Dean of Students, Dr. Danny Trujillo. Applicants were required to demonstrate active involvement on campus, commitment to their academics, and of course, financial need. The committee sought to award as many eligible applicants as possible and after careful consideration eight students were identified to receive financial assistance Article Continues from the Senior on Page 3 Scholarship Fund.

Committee Spotlight - Academic Affairs Charles Onyewuchi, Meghan Stevens, Shanna Gikonyo, Jordan Starks The Academic Affairs Committee works to bridge the gap between Administrators and Students in terms of academic concerns. The Committee has collaborated with Participate ‘12 this year for their Storm The Vote initiative, where they held an extremely successful Voter Registration Drive and have continued to support all events concerning the Presidential and Congressional races. Over 250 Students were given free “Storm the Vote” t-shirts for registering to vote! SGI also hosted the Academic Forum on October 15th, which allowed students to present their academic concerns and needs directly to Interim Provost Mangione, multiple College Deans & University Administrators. In addition, the Committee oversees the Who’s Who Among Students in College and Universities, and the Professor of the Year awards. Keep an eye out for those applications next semester!

SGI Scholarship Fund Continued Tying directly into the University values that we hold close to our hearts, it was rewarding to see the Senior Class work together to leave a positive mark. As students at a Vincentian University, students are taught the importance of giving back to the community and to be willing to help those in need. After such a successful first year, current Senior Senator,

Nicole Mastrangelo, is already diligently at work with Senior Representatives from colleges across the University to raise awareness about this significant opportunity. With such a positive precedent set, the hope is to continue growing the fund for years to come so that students can attain their graduation ambitions.

Committee Spotlight Public Relations

This year’s Public Relations Panel is on Wednesday, March 6 th from 5-8pm in Bent Hall 277AB, so save the date!

Allie Napoli, Cait Shannon, Alex Riccio, Brandon Prescott The Public Relations Committee of Student Government, Inc. is dedicated to promoting all SGI and Student Organizations’ programming to the entire student body. This year we have begun several new initiatives - one of them being the publication of an Organizations’ Events Calendar to promote all the events that are taking place on campus. We are also undertaking a Graphic Design Initiative, alongside the Advertising Club, which provides our Organizations with logos & promotional flyers for their events while expanding the portfolios of students in the industry. Throughout the year, we work with the Career Center to coordinate the Public Relations Panel, a great networking opportunity for PR and Communications majors. At the Panel, several Public Relations professionals come out to talk about the industry. We would love to see you all there. If you have any questions or need any help promoting an event, feel free to contact us at stjpublicrelations@gmail.com.

Committee Spotlight: Student Affairs Morgan Wright. Emily Bargabos, Monet Zaccarelli Caitlin Lopes, Molly Dies Winter Carnival is one of SGI’s signature events throughout the year. Our Student Affairs Committee collaborates with Campus Activities to make the holiday season come alive at St. John’s! SGI’s Student Affairs Committee works to create a schedule of festive events to cater to the St. John’s community. We kicked off the celebration Thursday with a special Holiday Edition of DAC After Dark where students decorated their own cupcakes. On Friday, we held our Annual Christmas Coffeehouse with the talent from student performers like Jason Lapin, Dana Hetzel, Shanna Gikonyo, and many more! During the weekend, we held a special Holiday Edition of Live, Love, Learn where we made personalized gifts on Saturday and on Sunday we held the “25 Days of Christmas” Movie Series in the DAC Org Lounge. This year we’re excited about starting a new tradition – St. John’s students are taking over Bryant Park in NYC with some VIP late night skating! SGI is also bringing the holiday experience to St. John’s with a Horse & Carriage Ride, Carolers & Toy Soldiers on the Great Lawn. And of course our celebration concludes Thursday when Rockefeller Center comes to St. John's! We’ll have Mass from 7-8 followed by our 22nd Annual Christmas Tree Lighting and Fireworks on the Great Lawn at 8pm! A true NYC spectacular! Afterwards, we invite everyone to the Red and White Dessert Party in Marillac to continue the festivities! We’re excited to end the night celebrating with St. John’s students, staff, faculty, administration, and especially our Alumni! This year, the Public Relations Committee is working hand in hand to promote all of our wonderful events throughout Winter Carnival. The Committee created Winter Carnival Passports, where students can collect stamps from certain Winter Carnival events, and the students who attended the most events will have a chance to win a limited edition SGI Coffee Mug.

The Student Affairs Committee also coordinates another one of our marquee St. John’s events —

Committee Spotlight Organizations Mark Benavides, Audrey Prieto, Najwa Sobti, Tatiana Leiva This year the Organizations Committee has excelled to new heights of success. The Organizations Committee initiatives have been divided into four main categories: Monthly Report Forms, Organizations Congress, Collaborations, and Committee Outreach. Our Monthly Report Form has been our greatest means of contact and regulation of Organizations with record numbers of submissions which allows SGI to efficiently see the areas of strengths and improvements within our Organizations. Org Congress has been a huge success this semester by implementing new and innovative ways in which we inform student leaders on proper recruitment techniques and by stressing committee structure to expand membership and involvement. The Organizations Committee has also began hosting Collaboration events where all types of Organizations come together and create personal and professional relationships in hopes to create joint programming. We’ve also amped up our Committee Outreach where we have been personally asking Organizations questions regarding specific issues such as recruitment, retention, e-board issues, programming, and even giving tips on how to start a committee within each Organization. The Organizations Committee also recently met with over 25 potential organizations attempting to receive SGI recognition through the Power To Organize process. After thorough review, the Committee allowed 15 Organizations to present to the SGI Floor. Consequently, all 15 were vote upon and approved.
