WELCOME TO CHRIST CHURCH ST LAURENCE Today we gather to celebrate the 172nd anniversary of the Dedication of the Parish Church of Christ Church St Laurence. Dignified liturgy and fine music have dominated the life of this parish since its earliest days. An annual Solemn High Mass with orchestra has been a high point in the liturgical calendar here for the last 40 years. Christ Church St Laurence has enjoyed a special relationship with the Parish of St Paul’s, Burwood over many years. We are delighted to welcome the Rector of Burwood, the Rev’d James Collins, as our guest preacher as we continue to celebrate the rich liturgical and musical traditions that unite our parishes. The setting of this year’s Orchestral Mass is Mozart’s Coronation Mass, composed in Salzburg in 1779. It is thought that this Mass was premiered in Salzburg Cathedral on Easter Day, 4 April 1779. The Mass acquired the nickname “Coronation” as a result of its use at royal coronations and services of thanksgiving. The Coronation Mass is an inspired choice for Christ Church St Laurence’s 40th Orchestral Mass. As we delight in the magnificent music of this evening’s Mass, we also give thanks for all who have contributed to this splendid tradition for the last 40 years. Christ Church St Laurence is greatly blessed with a dedicated team of musicians who enrich the worship here week by week. We thank our Director of Music, Organists and Choristers for all that they contribute to the ongoing life of the parish, as well as for the exhaustive preparations for this evening’s orchestral Mass. As beautiful and majestic as the music we offer here week by week may be, it is not offered as a musical performance. Rather, it is an act of worship, intended to inspire and draw us closer to God. As the Mass is not performed as a concert, there is no charge to attend. However, I invite you to offer financial support, as you are able, recognising that the musical tradition in this church is precious and must be preserved for future generations.

With every blessing, Fr Daniel Dries Rector Christ Church St Laurence

INTROIT

PROCESSIONAL HYMN

NEH 204 & 205 Henry Purcell (1659-95) Descant : Peter Jewkes (b.1956)

Westminster Abbey

1. Blessèd City, heavenly Salem, Vision dear of peace and love, Who, of living stones upbuilded, Art the joy of heaven above, And, with angel cohorts circled, As a bride to earth dost move!

4. All that dedicated city, Dearly loved by God on high, In exultant jubilation Pours perpetual melody, God the One, in Threefold glory, Singing everlastingly.

2. From celestial realms descending, Bridal glory round her shed, To his presence, decked with jewels, By her Lord shall she be led: All her streets, and all her bulwarks, Of pure gold are fashionèd.

5. To this temple, where we call thee, Come, O Lord of hosts, today; With thy wonted loving-kindness, Hear thy people as they pray; And thy fullest benediction Shed within its walls for ay.

3. Christ is made the sure foundation, And the precious corner-stone, Who, the two walls underlying, Bound in each, binds both in one, Holy Sion’s help for ever, And her confidence alone.

6. Here vouchsafe to all thy servants Gifts of grace by prayer to gain; Here to have and hold for ever, Those good things their prayers obtain, And hereafter, in thy glory, With thy blesséd ones to reign.

7. Laud and honour to the Father, Laud and honour to the Son, Laud and honour to the Spirit, Ever Three and ever One, One in love, and One in spendour, While unending ages run. Amem.

CHRIST CHURCH ST LAURENCE Railway Square, Sydney

The people sit for the readings from scripture. FIRST READING 1 Kings 8.22-24, 27-30 Solomon stood before the altar of the Lord in the presence of all the assembly of Israel, and spread out his hands to heaven. He said, ‘O Lord, God of Israel, there is no God like you in heaven above or on earth beneath, keeping covenant and stea fast love for your servants who walk before you with all their heart, the covenant that you kept for your servant my father David as you declared to him; you promised with your mouth and have this day fulfilled with your hand. ‘But will God indeed dwell on the earth? Even heaven and the highest heaven cannot contain you, much less this house that I have built! Have regard to your servant’s prayer and his plea, O Lord my God, heeding the cry and the prayer that your servant prays to you today; that your eyes may be open night and day towards this house, the place of which you said, “My name shall be there,” that you may heed the prayer that your servant prays towards this place. Hear the plea of your servant and of your people Israel when they pray towards this place; O hear in heaven your dwelling-place; heed and forgive.’ For the word of the Lord. = + Thanks be to God. PSALM 122 1. I was glad when they said to me: ‘Let us go to the house of the Lord.’ 2. And now our feet are standing: within your gates, O Jerusalem; 3. Jerusalem which is built as a city: where the pilgrims gather in unity. 4. There the tribes go up, the tribes of the Lord: as he commanded Israel, to give thanks to the name of the Lord. 5. There are set thrones of judgement: the thrones of the house of David. 6. O pray for the peace of Jerusalem: may those who love you prosper. 7. Peace be within your walls: and prosperity in your palaces. 8. For the sake of my kindred and companions: I will pray that peace be with you. 9. For the sake of the house of the Lord our God: I will seek for your good. CHRIST CHURCH ST LAURENCE Railway Square, Sydney

Jesus taught his disciples, saying: ‘Everyone then who hears these words of mine and acts on them will be like a wise man who built his house on rock. The rain fell, the floods came, and the winds blew and beat on that house, but it did not fall, because it had been founded on rock. And everyone who hears these words of mine and does not act on them will be like a foolish man who built his house on sand. The rain fell, and the floods came, and the winds blew and beat against that house, and it fell—and great was its fall!’ Now when Jesus had finished saying these things, the crowds were astounded at his teaching, for he taught them as one having authority, and not as their scribes.

SECOND READING 1 Peter 2.4-10 Come to him, a living stone, though rejected by mortals yet chosen and precious in God’s sight, and like living stones, let yourselves be built into a spiritual house, to be a holy priesthood, to offer spiritual sacrifices acceptable to God through Jesus Christ. For it stands in scripture: ‘See, I am laying in Zion a stone, a cornerstone chosen and precious; and whoever believes in him will not be put to shame.’ To you then who believe, he is precious; but for those who do not believe, ‘The stone that the builders rejected has become the very head of the corner,’ and ‘A stone that makes them stumble, and a rock that makes them fall.’ They stumble because they disobey the word, as they were destined to do. But you are a chosen race, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, God’s own people, in order that you may proclaim the mighty acts of him who called you out of darkness into his marvellous light. Once you were not a people, but now you are God’s people; once you had not received mercy, but now you have received mercy

THE CREED The people remain seated. The choir sings the Creed. Confiteor unum baptisma in remissionem peccatorum. Et expecto resurrectionem mortuorum,  et vitam venturi sæculi. Amen.

We believe in one God, the Father almighty, maker of heaven and earth, of all that is, seen and unseen. We believe in one Lord Jesus Christ, the only son of God, eternally begotten of the Father. God from God, light from light, true God from true God, begotten, not made, of one being with the Father: through him all things were made. For us and for our salvation, he came down from Heaven, was incarnate of the Holy Spirit, and the virgin Mary, and became truly human. For our sake he was crucified under Pontius Pilate, he suffered death and was buried. On the third day he rose again, in accordance with the scriptures. He ascended into heaven, and is seated at the right hand of the Father. He will come again in glory to judge the living and the dead and his kingdom will have no end. We believe in the Holy Spirit, the Lord, the giver of life, who proceeds from the Father and the Son, who with the Father and the Son is worshipped and glorified, who has spoken through the prophets. We believe in one holy catholic and apostolic Church. We acknowledge one baptism for the forgiveness of sins. We look for the resurrection of the dead,  and the life of the world to come. Amen.

The people stand. THE PRAYERS OF THE FAITHFUL The prayers are led from the lectern. After each prayer, the following is sung:

+ hear our prayer.

CHRIST CHURCH ST LAURENCE Railway Square, Sydney

The following is then recited on a monotone: = Almighty God, you have promised to hear our prayers. + Grant that what we have asked in faith we may by your grace receive, through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen. THE PENITENTIAL RITE The deacon reads the invitation to confession. The people kneel. Merciful God, + Our maker and our judge, we have sinned against you in thought, word and deed, and in what we have failed to do: we have not loved you with our whole heart; we have not loved our neighbours as ourselves; we repent, and are sorry for all our sins. Father, forgive us. Strengthen us to love and obey you in newness of life; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen. The priest pronounces the absolution: = Almighty God, who has promised forgiveness to all who turn to him in faith:  pardon you and set you free from all your sins, strengthen you in all goodness and keep you in eternal life, through Jesus Christ our Lord. + Amen. The people stand. THE GREETING OF PEACE

3. Crown him the Lord of love! 1. Sing praise then, for all who here sought and here found him, Whose journey is ended, whose perils are past: They believed in the Light; and its glory is round them, Where the clouds of earth’s sorrow are lifted at last. POSTLUDE Epistle Sonata in C K. 329 (Mozart)

The priest pronounces the blessing. God bring you to the home that Christ prepares for all who love him; God give you the will to live each day in life eternal; God grant you the citizenship of heaven, with his blessed and beloved and the whole company of the redeemed; and the blessing of God almighty, the Father, the Son and the Holy Spirit, be among you and remain with you always. + Amen.

The Rector and Wardens are delighted to announce the appointment of Peter Bruce as our new Parish Administrator. Peter, who is a member of the CCSL Evensong Choir, brings a wealth of experience and expertise to the Parish Office. Peter will commence as Parish Administrator during the week ahead. Peter will be in the office 4 days per week, while Francesca Jones (Outreach and Communications Assistant) will increase from 1 to 2 days per week. We look forward to the contribution that Peter will make to the Parish.

T.S. Eliot

T.S. Eliot described himself as ‘anglo-catholic in religion’ and was one of the best-known lay representatives of Anglo-Catholicism in the 20th century. The 90th anniversary of his adult baptism and confirmation, in 1927, is being celebrated this year. The leading authority on Eliot’s faith and its influence on his life and work, Professor Barry Spurr, will describe the origins and characteristics of Eliot’s Anglo-Catholicism and its influence on his poetry in a short lecture in the Parish Hall following Solemn Evensong on Sunday 24 September. There will be no sermon at Evensong on this occasion, and Evensong will be followed by wine and cheese. All are welcome.

Fieri Consort

Our recent visitors, the Fieri Consort, have now returned safely to London. Many thanks to everyone who contributed to making them welcome in our Parish. We were fortunate indeed two Sundays ago to host the group’s only Sydney performance, with the audience on its feet at the end of the concert. We hope to welcome the Fieri Consort to Christ Church St Laurence again in the future. In the meantime, copies of the group’s debut CD, Tears Of A Lover, are available at Belltower Books for $25.

Flowers

Flowers may be given in memory of a loved one or as an offering of thanksgiving. Betsy Roberts (9622 5458) would be pleased to hear from any parishioners who would like to contribute to this important aspect of our tradition.
