The Environmental Health Laboratory examines drinking water samples to determine if they are safe for human consumption. Water is tested only for bacteria (germs), not for chemical content.

Prevent contamination when collecting the sample by first washing hands thoroughly. Remove screen / aerator from spigot. Clean all deposits from spigot; replace facet if the spigot is corroded. Disinfect spigot with disinfectant cleaner. Rinse thoroughly.

IMPORTANT: Please complete the attached form. Be sure to record the date and time the sample was collected.

INSTRUCTIONS

Use only the sterile sample bottles provided by the Environmental Health Laboratories. Please read and follow these directions carefully. Phone, if you have questions.

1. The lab must process samples within thirty (30) hours of collection. Plan your sampling and delivery to conform to our collection and scheduling requirements: prior to 3:00 P.M. Monday through Wednesday.

2. The kitchen faucet is the preferred location for collecting samples. Preferably not connected to a softener or other filtering device, without swivel head and without hot and cold water mixing in the same valve. Remove screen/aerator before collection. (Before replacing the aerator, remove debris, and deposits, then sanitize with a disinfectant cleaner.)

3. Sample from the cold water tap only. Turn on the water and allow it to run briskly for five (5) minutes. Adjust the stream to a gentle flow for about half a minute.

Carefully remove the cap from the sample bottle. Do not remove pellet or powder from inside the bottle. Do not touch the inside of the cap or the threaded neck of the bottle. Do not set the cap down. If accidentally contaminated, get a fresh sampling kit.

4. Move the bottle under the water stream. When the water level reaches the top fill line, remove the bottle from the water stream. Do not overfill.

5. Replace the cap and tighten securely. (Leaking samples are unacceptable for analysis.)

6. Keep the sample in a darkened, cool place. Do not freeze.

7. Deliver the sample to the Environmental Health Laboratory in Berkeley within 30 hours. Samples that cannot be analyzed within thirty (30) hours of collection will be rejected.
