The Coronet THE JUNIOR SCHOOL NEWSLETTER
JULY 2018
The Summer Holidays have arrived and it is hard to believe that we have all finished another year here at Little St Margaret’s. Since September we have welcomed more than 50 new girls to the Junior School and we are delighted to see our school continue to grow. This last term has been incredibly busy and the girls have enjoyed extra activities both in and out of school. I am particularly proud of the performances of our girls in their Summer Concert and the Prize Giving. I was also incredibly impressed by the standard of the Year 3 to 6 Humanities Projects. This was our first year of asking the girls to choose an aspect of their Humanities studies that they particularly enjoyed, and do further independent research. The enthusiasm with which they tackled the projects was outstanding and the level of research and creativity was very apparent in the display. Congratulations girls! Our last week of term mirrored that of the Senior School by being off timetable for the whole week. However, there was plenty of learning and hard work still going on. It was a joy to see how the girls continued to grow and develop as they showed resilience, independence, responsibility, perseverance, empathy and kindness throughout the week’s activities. Legoland, House Plays, Environmental Day and Sports Day were all huge successes in an exhausting, but very rewarding week for all involved. We say goodbye to our Year 6s but look forward to seeing them next year up at the Senior School. For those that are moving on from St Margaret's, we wish them well and ask them to remember that they will always be a St Margaret’s Girl. May I take this opportunity to wish you all a happy and safe Summer. I look forward to welcoming you back to Little St Margaret’s in September.
Mrs Norris

Year 5 & 6 Rounders On Monday 4th June Year 5 and 6 had a rounders match against Northwood College. Everyone played really well and scored lots of rounders. In the first innings the Sharks (SMB) scored 5½ and Northwood College scored 4 rounders. Carmen as 2nd post and Priya as 4th post stumped lots of people out. In the second innings Northwood College scored 5½ rounders while we scored 3 rounders. Altogether Northwood College scored 9 ½ and we scored 8 ½ we were so close but unfortunately lost by only one rounder. Shriya and Izzy were great bowlers and scored our team lots of rounders. The player of the match was Isabel from Year 6. Well done to everyone who played in this match! By Anya Ashar ~ 6C
Year 6 – 8 Disco
On Thursday 14th June Years 6, 7 and 8 came together for a school disco. The disco took place in the evening at the Junior school hall. There were refreshments and a barbeque outside with a dance floor and DJ inside. It was nice to see all the girls dressed up in their smart party outfits. It was also good to see the teachers enjoying themselves. We danced the evening away to all our favourite songs. It was an evening we will never forget. Especially for the year 6 girls who will be moving on to Senior school next year. By Ishiya Ahluwalia ~ 6C
Year 6 PGL Residential Trip On the 6th June Year 6 went on a residential trip to PGL Liddington. We went there to build our teamwork skills, escape technology and to be independent. There were a huge variety of activities for us to do. One of the first activities was the giant swing and although we were all a little nervous, everyone had a go and enjoyed the thrill of trying something new. We also had the opportunity to experience quad-biking, fencing and archery. Our rope skills were developed through our experience of Jacob’s ladder, climbing and trapeze. (Although scary, the trapeze was a firm favourite amongst many!) In our survival session we were responsible for building our own shelter and many of us had a go at lighting a fire using a flint and some cotton. On our final night we enjoyed singing and toasting marshmallows around a campfire. We even had a surprise visitor as Mrs Norris came to join us for a few hours. Sleeping in bunks with our friends and being woken up by our teachers was a little strange, but we soon settled in and did not want to leave when Friday came! We all enjoyed PGL and encourage everyone to go next year. By Aliyah Dini ~ 6C
Year 3 Visit to Bushey Museum This morning was no ordinary morning…. Well…. The sky was still blue and the grass was still green but the school routine was not ordinary for Year 3 students at St. Margaret’s School… A school trip awaited! After a long walk down the hill, we reached a special war memorial with the names of the fallen carved on the back. We then rambled on to the Horse and Chains public horse, where we enthusiastically learnt about the long history of the site involving horses. The walk continued to the village museum, first passing some interest historical facts and buildings along the way. The finale at the museum, after a satisfying bright picnic lunch outside, allowed the girls to complete a stimulating worksheet about various historical things, including a lovely story about a saved cat called ‘Bushey’! Well done Arya
Athletics Meeting vs North London Collegiate School On Tuesday, 19 June, some girls from the athletics club got selected to compete against North London Collegiate. We participated in lots of challenging and fun activities, like shotput, high jump, long jump, vortex and running races which were: 100 metre run, 200 metre and 800 metre. At the end everyone ran in the relay race. Unfortunately we didn’t win but we tried our best and won the shotput, high jump, 100 metre race and finally the relay race. We scored 80 points and North London Collegiate scored 88. We all had great fun participating in the activities. Melina, Luciana and Diya participated in high jump. Pilar, Miranda and Scarlet participated in the shot put. Lucy, Divine and Isabella participated in the vortex. Aisha, Lily J and Silvia participated in the long jump. Miranda, Divine and Pilar participated in the 100 metre run. Lucy, Melina and Lily J participated in 200 metre run. Aisha, Diya and Isabella participated in the 800 metre run. We met students from North London Collegiate, they were very talented and competitive. We were all very excited and nervous but at the end we were happy and proud of all the hard work we put into the competition. It was our first match out of school and we were proud of our first ever score. Everyone had a treat at the end which was a yummy crunchy kit kat and a nice cold drink of water to calm us down after all of our running, throwing and jumping skills. By Miranda and Diya ~ 6S
Year 3 – 6 Junior School Concert
On Thursday 21st June, the Junior School took part in a wonderful musical concert. Everyone took part and thoroughly enjoyed it! There were many great performances, such as the Choir, Orchestra, as well as some Speech and Drama; both solo and group performances. Everyone did a superb job. We heard fantastic solos from Jemima in Year 3, Tara in Year 4, Pippa in Year 5 and Iman in Year 6. Everyone worked really hard, including Mrs Bird, who organised the concert. There was some fine accompaniment on the piano from Mr Hammond and some excellent conducting by Mrs Bird. At the start of the concert the orchestra played some pieces: Gangster Prankster, Scarborough Fair and Yellow Submarine. Then we had some class performances, such as Peanut Vendor, Wonderwall, Refuge and The Lion Sleeps Tonight. Finally, to end the concert we had the choir singing wonderful renditions of True Colours and Touch the Sky. By Scarlet Wolstenholme ~ 6C
Memories from Little St. Margaret’s My time at Little St. Margaret’s has been a brilliant one. When I joined this school, I was four years old and was a part of the Lower Prep Infant department as I was in Reception. At first I was very quiet and did not know how to make friends. I was in this new scary environment and I was quite frightened. With the help of Miss King and Mrs Tabor I soon knew everyone and I am very proud to call St. Margaret’s School my home. As I proceeded through the years I saw many types of teachers. Some scary, some kind and some funny. It is now I realise that every single one of these teachers and TA’s have made a difference in my life. Two years later I was very proud to call myself an Upper Prep Junior department girl. Year three was probably one of the best years of my life having lovely Mrs Franklin as my teacher. I learnt so much academically but I also learnt how to be a good friend and a good person moving on in life. One of the best memories of year three was sitting in front of the board getting ready to watch a fun educational programme whilst eating sweets. Some of my best memories are based on school trips. Such as the trip to Butterfly world; The Verulamium Museum; Knebworth House; Hudnall Park; PGL and lots more. I also will never forget moving across the road into a new big school. I honestly thought I would get lost but I settled in well with the help of my Year five teacher Mrs Joyce. I will never forget this school and it will always be home. I will look back at these memories and think what a wonderful childhood I have had these past years. By Lili Tsintis Oviedo ~ 6C
We will miss you too, Lili.
Year 7 Induction Evening On Thursday 19th June Year six went over to the senior school for an Induction Evening. We met all of the girls who were going to join us in September and all our teachers. After that we introduced ourselves to everyone. Next we did a fun activity where we had to find clues around the school to win the treasure hunt. This activity was to help us to get to know our school. The resources we have around our school are really quite a lot. After that we found out which forms we were in. There are three Form Tutors: Mrs O’Hanlon, Mrs Winslett and soon to be Mrs Perry. They mixed St Margaret's girls with new girls to ensure that we all will make new friends whilst keeping the old ones. Over all, the evening was very interesting and enjoyable. We are all very excited to move on to this new stage in our lives. By Iman Mirza and Anaya Patel ~ 6S
Year 5 Senior School Experience Day On Monday 25th June Year 5 went to the senior school for a day to experience life as a senior girl. When we got to school, we registered in the junior school in our classroom. We took all of our belongings to the main entrance hall in the Waterhouse building (senior school) and sat down for a few moments. Then the Deputy Headmistress, Mrs Erdil, gave us our name tags. There were two teams, the green team and the red team. I was in the red team. First the red team headed towards the Art Block with Mrs Cohen and Mrs Birch. We were doing atmospheric art which means art related to nature or representing nature. We were making hanging puddles. We started by drawing and cutting out four puddles out of paper. Then we used oil pastel to draw ripples. Finally we threaded the puddles and painted them with blue and black ink. Since oil and water don’t mix, white ripples formed on our puddles. Then we walked over to break. We got to eat on the top floor of the lunch hall with the Year 8 girls. We got a choice of snack and fruit. We also got some orange juice to drink. After break, we did woodland writing. We went into the woods behind school with Mrs Mitchel. We walked and explored the woods. Then we wrote a poem about nature. Finally we discovered a pond. It was surprising because some people had been to the pond in Year 3. Next, it was time for our P.E lesson. The theme of the lesson was Ancient Greek Olympics. We were going to do activities such as relay race, chariot racing, armour race, long jump and javelin. We did the activity in green and red groups. One group was divided into three and went to make armour for their racer while the other group, also divided into three, made a human chariot. Then we raced the armoured people and the human chariots. After that we did the rest of the activities. If we won something then we got laurel reefs. It was extremely hot and we were all very tired and couldn’t wait for lunch. Then, we headed to lunch. For lunch we had chicken korma or pasta bake with cheese. We sat with the Year 8s again and we talked to them making friends with them. After lunch, two boarders, Lisa and Winnie showed us around the boarding house. We saw the rooms and asked Winnie and Lisa questions. They were very nice to us. We also saw a video about a day in boarding school. Finally we headed to our last lesson of the day, Food Technology. We were going to make a salad which matched the eatwell guide. We were given ingredients and began. After we finished making our salads, we compared them to the eatwell guide. Then we cleared up and we all agreed that our mums must work hard to cook and clear up every day. When the day had finished we were all tired and couldn’t wait to go home and relax. Year 3-6 swimming gala! On the 25th of June 2018 Year 3-6 competed in a swimming gala against Ashfield School. Students swam front crawl, backstroke, breaststroke lengths and widths. The P.E staff all worked hard to put this event together and it paid off because we all enjoyed it. Every participant swam exceptionally well and cheered their team on. With a lot of hard work and effort we (SMB) managed to win. The scores were 85/80 to us. Thank you to everyone who swam (well done). Last but not least thank you to Miss Braine, Miss Porter and Mrs Pimlott for organising this fun event. By Lucy Jackson and Anya Ashar ~ 6C
Junior School House Day This year each house in the junior school chose different stories to perform. My house Southwark chose Charlie and the Chocolate Factory. Windsor chose Beauty and the Beast, Waterhouse, Aurora and St. Johns chose Aladdin. Each house was split up into different rooms and we all had a chance to practice in the hall. Backstage each room was filled with excitement, some of the girls were a bit nervous because it was their first time. In the morning everybody was busy practicing. It was a hard but fun day and there was a lot of work to do. We started off not knowing what to do but then picked it up as we went along. It took quite a long time to get the hang of things, such as not speaking over each other and learning to face the front. Every house performed successfully in the afternoon and received a great round of applause. At the end of the performance, each house took turns to perform a song: Southwark sang THIS IS ME, Windsor performed a song based on Gaston, St. Johns sang a whole new world and Waterhouse sang Set it off. To close all the performances Mrs Norris spoke. By Mia-Amore Gayle ~ 4R
Environment Day On the 4th of July 2018 it was environmental day for Reception to Year 6. One of the activities was making bug hotel with Miss King and Miss Pares. We had to find leaves, sticks and dried grass to make a place where all bugs are welcome. When we were finished collecting our resources we got to paint rocks and stones and make signs for decoration. Another activity was making notebooks with Mr Sedley. First we went outside to the woods to find small but, thin sticks. The second thing we did was get 2 pieces of white string, 1 piece of blue card and 3 pieces of white paper. Next the teachers went around and ‘hole punched’ our pieces of paper. We then put our books together. My favourite activity was building shelters with Miss Porter, Mrs Carter and Mrs Hashim. We had to make a shelter big enough for one of our team members to fit in. I enjoyed it because I found it fun and it helped our team work together. I enjoyed Environmental Day because there were lots of activities to do with different teachers. I look forward to Environmental Day next year. By Rebecca Bevan ~ 4H
Year 2 During the second half of this term Year 2 have worked hard to produce their own non-fiction books about a safari animal. We each chose one of the following to research: elephant, lion, giraffe, rhino or zebra. We organised our information into chapters and wrote a contents page. Some of us also composed a glossary. We enjoyed reading our finished books to Reception and Year 1.
On Monday 2nd July we headed to Legoland for a day of adventure and a Lego forces workshop where we built vehicles. Each group worked together to make a vehicle that would roll smoothly along a surface. There were many grand designs.
