Me, My Grandfather and My Grandmother by Shemyliah Ahmat

Me, My Grandfather and My Grandmother

Shemyliah Ahmat | Year 11

My name is Shemyliah Ahmat Pearson. I am from Coconut and Hammond Islands in the Torres Straits. My grandfather is a proud Torres Strait Islander from a small, beautiful island called Coconut Island, which is also known as Poruma. I remember my grandfather as strong and intelligent; he was always positive and encouraging and loved to teach his grandchildren and great-grandchildren all about our culture so that we could pass it down to the next generation. My grandfather loved being outside hunting and loved island dancing. I loved spending all my time with my grandparents because whenever I’m with them I feel happy and I’m always smiling. I grew up with a lot of cousins, nieces and nephews.
