From the President Welcome to the second edition of the OGA newsletter this year. The reunion weekend on 20-21 July was a wonderful success with reunion groups of 10, 20, 30, 40, 45, 50, 55 and 60 years meeting to catch up with school friends and share stories of memories. The OGA is always keen to promote the reunions of past students and to encourage connection to the school community. At the Old Girls’ Day chapel service on Sunday 21 July, old girl, the Reverend Pam Hynd (Prentice 1963) was the celebrant and School Chaplain, Reverend Di Murphy devoted her sermon to thanking present and past school sacristans for their role in supporting faith within the school. The sacristan role was introduced in the school in 1967.
Our Annual General Meeting will be held on Monday 25 November at 7.15pm at the school in Mooloomburram. All past students are welcome to attend. Hanging behind the altar in the school chapel is the reredos – a beautiful silk embroidery depicting women in the bible. This outstanding work of art is now over 20 years old and in need of cleaning, restoring and preserving. The OGA has provided some funding to assist with this and is also selling gift cards and bookmarks depicting the reredos and its story to help with funding for future preservation. Please do also read in this newsletter more on the reredos in the Archive section written by the school archivist Bronwyn Perry. The next OGA function will be our annual Brunch to be held at the Arts Centre Foyer on Sunday 20 October from 9am to 12pm with guest speaker Natalie Wright (1982-1986). Natalie is National Director of the Design Institute of Australia and a lecturer in Interior Design at QUT. Please join us for this annual event (further information to RSVP is in the newsletter).

From the Archives
As mentioned in the President’s article, the OGA is assisting the school in a project for the cleaning and conservation of the Chapel reredos. The reredos hanging was dedicated by Bishop Adrian Charles in March 1991 and has been a striking focal point of the Chapel for more than 20 years. The design for this magnificent background to the altar was drawn by Father David Binns, who was then Chaplain at St Aidan’s and the design was completed by Jane Wilson. Jane had been a teacher at St Margaret's and is a talented textile artist. Her work has been exhibited both nationally and overseas. The hanging measures 3.3m x 4.7m and is supported by a wooden frame. The larger than life-size figures portray women of the Bible and above them, the risen Christ with arms uplifted. The 14 women represented are:

The colours used in the reredos were inspired by the stained glass windows in the Chapel and they give a feeling of unity to the space. It took more than 500 hours to complete the work, using a variety of applique and embroidery techniques. All the materials are pure silk, both fabric and threads. The hanging has suffered from the effects of light and the environment over the years – many of the originally vibrant colours have faded and the reredos is in need of cleaning and restoration. Fortunately, Jane Wilson kept a detailed journal while she was working on the project, including fabric samples and descriptions of the techniques used. This will be an invaluable resource during the restoration process. Rev Di Murphy is coordinating the project and contemplating the logistics of dealing with such a large artwork! St Margaret’s is privileged to have this unique piece of art as part of our daily life.

Where are they now? Sarah Derrington nee Johnstone (1984)
Amanda Mahony nee McLeay (1994)
Professor Sarah Derrington is the new Dean of Law at the University of Queensland and has been touted as one of Australia's leading maritime law experts, particularly in the areas of admiralty law and marine insurance. Professor Derrington serves on the Australian Maritime Safety Authority, the Admiralty Rules Committee (Commonwealth) and the Maritime Law Association of Australia and New Zealand, of which she was President for three years. Sarah was a teacher at the UQ Law School between 1994 and 2011 and was appointed a Fellow of the Australian Academy of Law in 2009. After returning to full-time practice as a barrister, arbitrator and mediator in 2011, Professor Derrington maintained an active role in the Law School as an Adjunct Professor and as a mooting coach. She steered a UQ team to victory in the annual International Maritime Law Arbitration Moot in 2012 and coached the 2013 team who defended the title in Southampton in England.
I can’t believe it’s close to 20 years since the end of school! I’m sure all my fellow “old” girls would agree time has flown. It’s been a whirlwind of university, travel, adventure and a wonderful career in media. English was my favourite subject at school and that base, carried on to life as a News Journalist, Producer and Weather Presenter with Network Ten. This is a big year – I’m soon to become a mum and I’ve launched a small business, Word of Mouth, hosting events and presenting corporate videos and voice over work. St Margaret’s provided a fantastic grounding. Development and Community Office Update There has been a great deal going on already this year. The Foundation promoted its ‘200 Club’ Art Union with proceeds going towards the demolition of the old ‘Loft’ building. It also includes landscaping and the restoration of the old sandstone wall that some may remember as ‘The Tennis Wall’. The P&F held many fundraising events including the annual St Margaret’s Race Day which is the pinnacle fundraising event of the year and open to the whole St Margaret’s community. The events held were a great success with funds raised going to many worthy projects within the school. We have kept in touch with past students through reunions held in Canberra and London and attended by the Principal, Ros Curtis. We also held the VIP function for the ladies of the 1920s – 1952 on 19 June before hosting the big reunion weekend for the 10, 20, 30, 40, 50 and 60 year reunions in July. Thanks to everyone involved in making these a great success. In addition,
we continue to host the increasingly popular Women in Industry networking events which brings together not only past students but current mothers, senior students and the wider community. Please join us at the Women in Finance and Law Breakfast on 15 October at the Brisbane Club. Tickets will be available through the shopping cart on the website. Everyone is welcome. School Achievements Performing Arts Success - Congratulations to Xenia Puskarz-Thomas The OGA would like to congratulate Xenia Puskarz-Thomas (current Year 12 student and Arts/Choral Captain) who was invited to perform as guest soprano soloist with the Queensland Youth Orchestra at a recent concert in the Old Museum in Brisbane. Xenia performed arias by Bellini, Grieg and Head. She was also invited to tour with the QLD Youth Orchestra tour to Canberra in June and to Mackay in July as the guest vocal soloist - another amazing achievement. This year Xenia also had a leading role in the School's musical, You're a Good Man Charlie Brown. The OGA wishes Xenia every success with her singing in the future. Success in Sport For those of you who have a keen interest in sport, you’ll be pleased to know about the achievements of St Margaret's so far this year.
St Margaret’s 1st VIII won the Head of the River for the 3rd year in a row – a feat which has never been done before in BSRA history. The St Margaret’s Rowing Team also came away with the Percentage Cup.

The Opens and Year 10 netball teams won their respective divisions at the Southern Skies Tournament over the June/July holidays. Milton House won its 9th consecutive inter-house athletics carnival. St Margaret’s won 13th consecutive percentage cup at 2013 QGSSSA Cross Country championships. St Margaret’s won the percentage cup at 2013 QGSSSA swimming championships. Under 15s water polo team were runner up in the Brisbane Water Polo competition. The St Margaret’s Athletics Team is chasing its 12th Percentage Cup this year

Guest speaker: Natalie Wright
Natalie is a Lecturer and PhD candidate in the QUT Faculty of Creative Industries, School of Design, with 18 years experience as a commercial Interior Designer, gained in Australia, Japan and the UK. She is a National Director and Immediate Past Queensland President of the Design Institute of Australia. Natalie’s academic research interests are focused around socially responsible design, community engagement and service learning, and design education approaches in the secondary and tertiary education contexts. Since 2010, she has been involved in the development and facilitation of over 15 design workshop programs for secondary school students and teachers across Queensland and the development of the State Library of Queensland Design Minds website. Natalie attended St Margaret’s from 1982-1986 and will reflect on experiences at school that inspired her passions, career choice and current endeavours.
