We think the following three challenges face St. Mark’s:
Actively encourage a Culture of Generosity. This will involve reorienting how we think and talk about stewardship with an emphasis on the relationship between money and faith. This committee and activity will be year-round. We will research our membership data to better understand the concerns of our community. Our narrative about generosity will be linked to the missions/ministries our congregation supports. The Bacon and Lee report will be used to guide our effort to retire the Rejoice debt. Become a Better Resource for Our Community. We will use our Parish House to address hunger in San Antonio and support the Haven for Hope. We will encourage each other to imagine how to make the best use of our facility and congregational talents/skills. While grants are an important component of outreach, we want to create opportunities for our members to participate more actively with their time. We will seek ways in which individual members and the body of St. Mark’s as a whole may serve Christ beyond the walls of the parish. Enrich our Community Life. Our Parish House will become a center for more of the life of our congregation. Families, young adults, adults, and elders will be better supported and involved. People will join St. Mark’s because they want to be a part of our vibrant community.

If you know a leader at St. Mark’s that you would like to have considered for Vestry Service, please contact Bill Smith (wcsmithmd@gmail.com) or David Phipps (sacdc_david@sbcglobal.net).
In order to meet these challenges, we are looking for Vestry Nominees with a subset of the following characteristics. While this list may appear daunting, we are working

With the opening of Haven for Hope, the closing of other downtown ministries, we don’t quite know how these people will be affected. We know St. Mark’s will continue to be a beacon of light to those who may be homeless, in need of medical care, transportation services, or pastoral care. How do we best respond? How can we work together with other groups such as Christian Assistance Ministry? Are there parish members who may be called to help serve in this effort? St. Mark’s Celebrates Earth Day by Greg Merritt, Environmental Stewardship Chair In support of this year's Earth Day (April 22), the St. Mark's Environmental Stewardship Group will be hosting an Environmental Awareness Sunday on April 25th -- and we invite you to come talk to us! Our group's mission is to "actively encourage the practice
of deliberate living in Christ by promoting environmentally sustainable behavior and responsible stewardship of the Earth in all aspects of our lives," and as
a new and active committee within the St Mark's family we have many great ideas (but are looking for many more). Come by our booth in the courtyard between and after the day's services, and tell us your thoughts on environmental stewardship -- we'll share some of our own ideas and tell you about our group's future activities.
costs and waste -- and we'll have reading material that allows you to think through your own "environmental footprint". Most importantly, we believe that environmental responsibility is an essential part of living in Christ's example, and we are exploring and sharing ways that our church's community can enjoy and care for our planet. (We're even looking for recruits -- young, old, and in-between -- to help with projects, so come with ideas and an interest in helping!) We look forward to seeing you on April 25th!
In addition, we'll be collecting household batteries (AA, AAA, C, D, etc.) and expired Compact Fluorescent (CF) light bulbs -- neither of which should be thrown in the garbage but instead require special recycling. Bring your spent batteries and bulbs, and we'll do the recycling for you. We're not looking to save the Earth in just one day, but we do have some small/easy ideas for you in cutting energy

Lenten Luncheons Dishes it Out by Julie Van Zandt, Lenten Luncheons Chair & Mary McClung, Café Kairos This green post-it-note was stuck to the Lenten Luncheons announcement board on the last day of serving Friday, March 26. It was noticed (with some mirth) while packing the now empty volunteer room later that afternoon. Maybe Park Lawrence’s pedometer reading will give you an idea of how hard folks worked during Lenten Luncheons. If nothing else, it provides a reminder to say THANK YOU to all who served during Lenten Luncheons. It is a long list of thank you’s as St. Mark’s is blessed with a number of hard working individuals. Over 150 of you worked the Luncheons including representatives from six participating charities and the Diocese. You served more
than 2,000 people resulting in approximately $17,000 in gross sales. Suffice to say, a number of you met your Lenten commitment. What can not be quantified was the resulting fellowship. It simultaneously built the church inside and outside. Thank you.

Where does it say Dorcas in the Bible? by Ellen Martin & Pat Donegan, Dorcas Stitchers
Dorcas in the Bible A Bible Devotion about Dorcas in the Bible A Woman full of Good Works and Charitable Deeds “At Joppa there was a certain disciple named Tabitha, which is translated Dorcas. This woman was full of good works and charitable deeds which she did. But it happened in those days that she became sick and died. When they had washed her, they laid her in an upper room. And since Lydda was near Joppa, and the disciples had heard that Peter was there, they sent two men to him, imploring him not to delay in coming to them. Then Peter arose and went with them. When he had come, they brought him to the upper room. And all the widows stood by him weeping, showing the tunics and garments which Dorcas had made while she was with them. But Peter put them all out, and knelt down and prayed. And turning to the body he said, “Tabitah, arise.” And she opened her eyes, and when she saw Peter she sat up. Then he gave her his hand and lifted her up; and when he had called the saints and widows, he presented her alive. And it became known throughout all Joppa, and many believed on the Lord.” Acts 9:36-42 The Dorcas Stitchers, formerly known as The Linen Stitchers of St. Mark's, will meet on Friday, April 30 at 10:00 am in Room 305. Having made altar linens for the CAYA service, Bethlehem Chapel and Jerusalem Chapel, the group will now take on hemming and embroidery of baptism towels formerly constructed by Parish Aid. We will also begin an annual schedule to replace worn linens for the church altar. We gather as a group several times a year but most of the stitching is done at your convenience at home. You do not have to do all the work to complete a linen piece. You can choose to pin and baste the hem, stitch the hem, or embroider --- feel free to take on a single task or all of the above! We invite you to contribute your time and talent to The Dorcas Stitchers.
At the Altar with Coffee by Ellen Martin, Altar Guild Chair The Altar Guild will have their annual May gathering on May 15. We will have a Coffee, which is to be held at St. Mark’s in the Dean Richardson Room from 10:00am to 12:00pm. This is a time of fellowship and the new officers will be presented. We look forward to seeing all of you there. Please make your reservation by sending a check for $15.00 to Barbara Ward by May 11. Barbara’s address is 8702 Sarasota Woods, San Antonio, Texas 78250. See you there!

LA FOLLIA AUSTIN BAROQUE presents
Let’s Go for Baroque! by Dr. Ed Rieke, Director of Music On Sunday afternoon, April 25, 2010 at 4:00pm Music from Saint Mark’s will present the final event of the 2009-2010 concert series. La Follia Austin Baroque has performed for over 25 years as part of Austin’s diverse musical scene. They play music of the 17th and 18th centuries (the “Baroque period”), using instruments and performance practices appropriate to that time. You will hear music from this period brought to life by recreating the original sound, a sound which is lighter, sweeter, and more transparent than that produced by modern classical instruments. In addition to a mezzo-soprano soloist,
you will hear the harpsichord, Baroque violin, lute, viola da gamba and traverso (Baroque flute). Join La Follia in this world tour of Baroque music, sampling the highlights from Germany, France, Italy, and England. Featured composers are J. S. Bach, Handel, Vivaldi, Couperin, Purcell, Corelli, Telemann, and Marais. The concert, an official Fiesta Event, is, as always, offered free of charge.
The account of Jesus feeding the five thousand is the only miracle – apart from the resurrection – that is reported in all four gospels! This musical version of the story includes details from all four, but focuses primarily on the narrative as it appears in John – where one young boy with five loaves and two fish is the catalyst for everything that follows. We don’t really know anything about the boy other than his willingness to share, but we know the results of his action: an event so startling, members of the crowd wanted to proclaim Jesus as king. In the words of Mother Teresa, “We can do small things, with great love, and together we can do something wonderful.” Join us for our annual musical where small things done with great love can change the world! It is free for everyone to attend and an ice cream social will follow.

Youth Ministries Dish it Out for the Food Bank by Todd Allison, Dir. Youth Ministries
April 18 through Sunday, May 25th the Jr. and Sr. High Youth of St. Mark's will be collecting funds to assist the San Antonio Food Bank. This will be the lead event before the 2nd Annual Summer Outreach Weekend coming in June. The youth will spend the weekend at the church and working directly with the San Antonio Food Bank. For each dollar raised very generous benefactors (who wish to remain anonymous) will match the donation (up to $10,000). Even more... for every dollar given directly from a youth or child’s own allowance or money the matching donation will be quadrupled. The San Antonio Food Bank is one of the most successful Food Banks in the country distributing food to approximately 400 service agencies that help people in need. With the various partnerships in place the SAFB is able to turn each $1 donated into $13.00 worth of nutritious food. So this means there is a potential of St. Mark's being able to provide over $250,000 worth of food to families here in San Antonio and throughout Southwest Texas. Last year the congregation of St. Mark’s donated over $15,000.00 and the youth would like to pick up right where we left off last year. Please stop by the table in the courtyard before or after church or contact any of the Youth to donate.

St. Mark’s Youth Faces Giants in Rocksprings by Sara Talley, Assistant Dir. Youth Ministries This past weekend, April 9 -11, the St. Mark’s youth and their leaders spent a weekend in beautiful Rocksprings, Texas learning about the giants we will all inevitably have to face in life as part of growing up. There at Camp Eagle, the youth group learned how to not only look life’s giants in the face, but stare down at them from over one hundred feet in the air as they scaled the side of a rock blindfolded trusting in their partner’s voice and in the promises of God to never leave or forsake us. Accompanied by The Rev. Jonathan Wickham, as well as Emmet and Renee Faulk, the youth set out directly after school Friday afternoon full of excitement and anticipation for the weekend’s events. Saturday morning, the group began the morning early with team building activities which encouraged trust, friendships, and an overall sense of group bonding interaction. After the camp staff felt as if the group was working well together as a team, we all traveled deep into the woods to a low ropes course. Here, the group was faced with a challenge of working together to strategize an intricate plan of lifting each individual team member through a small opening ten foot off the ground and supporting one another not only in the physical strength to lift one another, but spiritual strength to raise one another’s spirit and morale. Throughout the weekend, both Todd and myself encouraged the weekend’s theme, “Facing the Giants in our Lives” by explaining that just because we are the youth of St. Mark’s does not mean that the everyday giants we face in our lives are any less important than those of our parents or other adults in the parish. Life changing events such as changing schools, wondering where to sit at lunch on the first day of school, meeting new friends, keeping up with school work, and even learning to cope with death, are huge things in the lives of teenagers and these things are important to God. The group was pushed to take the challenging
to remember this forever!” The St. Mark’s youth group certainly came together physically and spiritually this weekend more than Todd or I could have ever imagined. We find such comfort in watching this group grow up and face the giants in their lives knowing that each One of the biggest events the group faced person in the St. Mark’s youth group has a was the rock traverse. Here, the St. Mark’s community of friends in faith that stand ready to assist them through the times in group of twenty youth and three adults was faced with a towering rock cliff with life when they are blindfolded and need a only a harness and a guiding cable to clip calm voice to help along the way or a friend to take a leap of faith into the dark to as we scaled the side of the cliff as a with. group. Many challenges were brought upon the group as we endured the Plans are already underway to continue journey such as the challenge of this powerful youth group experience next blindfolding half of the team and encouraging them to trust their partner to year. Todd and I are really looking guide them through steep rocks and tree forward to the next Camp Eagle adventure and we hope you are too! stumps just by following the sound of their voice. Perhaps the biggest event came at the end of the traverse when the St. Mark’s group lowered team members from the top of the cliff to the bottom of the river below feeding a single rope through the group which literally held each person suspended over the river and guided them safely to the other side where each person stood ready to assist the others on their landing. experiences being faced at Camp Eagle and apply them to their personal lives as a way to physically overcome fear, failures, and to promote self-confidence to endure the inevitable giants that will cast shadows in life.
After the rock traverse, the group was awarded with time to play in the beautiful river that runs throughout Camp Eagle. The group laughed together as they “blobbed” one another into the chilly water as others watched from the top of the inflatable rock wall they climbed that floated in the river nearby. After such a mentally and physically exhausting day, the group was faced with one last giant before bed – a 450 foot zip line – in the dark! Two by two, members of the St. Mark’s youth group climbed the tall platform and leaped into the darkness and glided along one of the longest zip lines in Texas guided only by their faith and the stars of the Texas Hill Country. One of the youth group members, Christina Howe described her experience in this way, “My mom told me before I left that I couldn’t fly and not to try to fly. Well, I certainly flew today and I’m going

Know your Nursery Series
Interviewer: Hello Mrs. Torres. It is nice of you to join us for part 4 of the Know your Nursery Series. Let’s start by introducing yourself to the community. Q: What is your full name? A: My full name is Nancy Ibarra Torres. Q: Where were you born and raised? Did you go to school here in San Antonio? A: I was born and raised in San Antonio, Texas and attended South San Antonio High School. Q: Where do attend church services? A: I work here at St. Mark’s and on Sundays at Christ Church. I do not attend any church services. Q: Nancy, tell us a little about your family. Do you have any children? A: Yes, I have 2 children Briana, 18 and Brian, 13. Q: What is your role in the nursery? A: I am a PDO teacher in the Lions room 3 ½ to 5 years. On occasion when help is needed I work special events. Q: How long have you been employed here? A: It will be four years in June Q: Do you have any family members that are employed here or involved in other ministries? A: Yes, my daughter Briana, my mother Rebecca Ibarra and my aunt Mary Esther all work in the nursery. Q: Just for laughs...What is your shoe size? A: My shoe size varies because I have a wide foot, so it depends on the style of the shoe. I can wear an 8 to 8 ½ wide, or a 9 if not wide width. Q: Are you a pet owner? A: Yes we have 2 dogs Kiwee, 5 and Mia. We’ve had Mia
since October of 1995. My children say she is immortal and she will out live everyone at home, including them. Q: Now for all your favs….Tell the readers what you enjoy the most. Got a favorite song? Or a tasty dish you desire? A: My favorite song is Because I Love You by Stevie B. I really don’t have a favorite food, but more like a snacknachos w/ jalapenos. Q: Nachos are always a great snack. Nancy, do you have a favorite Bible story or passage? A: Yes it is John 8:7 “Those of you who have not sinned shall cast the 1st stone.” I love this Bible verse because Jesus teaches us that no one is perfect . We cannot judge others because of the wrong they have done. The only judge is God! Q: Good choice for snacks! What is the best part of your job at St. Mark’s? A: The best part of my job is the children. They bring a smile to your face everyday with the things they say and the way they hug you, just because. It just melts your heart. Q: Tell us something about your family. A: I come from a family of 3 girls (no brothers) and my husband has 7 brothers (no sisters). My daughter is the 1st girl in my husband’s family and my son is the 1st boy in my family. My children are very loved, blessed and SPOILED!!! Q: Wow! That is interesting. Nancy, as a parent what is the hardest thing you had to deal with? A: The hardest thing as a parent is letting go. My daughter is graduating from high school this year and I cannot see her go away to college. It breaks my heart to let her go. I get so sad even thinking about it.
Church Corner
Q: Don’t worry Nancy she has to spread her wings. Do you have any advice for young parents? A: Enjoy them when they are little. They grow up so fast . I miss my babies when they were small. That is why I enjoy the children here at St. Mark’s. Believe me raising them as babies is so much easier and fun than TEENAGERS. Q: What kind of advice did your parents give you? A: Always be kind to everyone, and choose the path in your life wisely. If you choose the right path, life will be a little easier. Always remember the wrong choice will always lead you back down the right path with a hard lesson learned, and it will be a long and bumpy road back. NEVER GIVE UP!!!! Also the all time favorite, treat others as you would like to be treated. Q: That is great advice and your parents were right. So for the kiddies, do you have a favorite book you like to read to them? A: I have 2 favorite books: 1.) Danny and the Dinosaur, my favorite as a child and 2.) The Foot Book by Dr. Seuss. It was the 1st book my son learned to read, and the smile on his face when he read warms my heart. Q: Those are neat books and I was a fan of Danny and the Dinosaur when I was a child, too. What about a favorite song to sing with the children? Do you have a favorite? A: I have 2 favorite songs to sing 1. The 1.)“Itsy Bitsy Spider” and 2.)“I’m a little teapot”. I remember singing them when I was a preschooler . I also sang them to my children and the memories make me happy. Q: If you could give your child one toy, what toy would it be? A: If I could give my child one toy it would be a doll for a girl and a teddy bear for a boy to love and cuddle. The way they are loved and cuddled. Interviewer: Nancy it has been a pleasure speaking with you and I can’t wait to hear the children’s rendition of “Itsy Bitsy Spider” in the nursery. Thank you for taking the time to introduce yourself to the community. We appreciate all you do for the children of St. Mark’s.

The Easter Egg Hunt & Picnic this year was a big success. Ellen Martin coordinated the event along with numerous volunteers to make this occasion fun for everyone. The food was provided by Ruby’s Kitchen and all the candy was donated by friends of St. Mark’s. This year the Easter Egg Hunt & Picnic was held at the Bishop Jones Center and The Rev. Wickham retold the story of the Resurrection Eggs to the children. Of course the children got to spend some time eating tasty treats and got a visit from Mr. Bunny. It was a wonderful way to jump start the Easter season.

Workplace Ministry
“…the problem, simply put, is that Episcopalians gathered in worship on Sunday have not made the connection between what they are experiencing and the next 167 hours of the week. They listen to the Scripture and its interpretation, sing hymns, pray, give money, listen to music…. and, most important gather at the altar to receive spiritual sustenance for the week ahead. Then they are dismissed to ‘go forth into the world.’ Apparently all of that has not been enough to help most people to connect the dots, or we would not be having this conversation.” --Bill Thompson, retired Episcopal priest
