YÜÉÅ à{x exvàÉÜ Our Identity as the People of God By The Rev. Mike Chalk
T
here are two books that help frame our identity as the People of God. The Bible is obviously paramount as we learn and re-learn what following God means. The Bible is not an elective but primary to our understanding of what it means to be a disciple of Christ. With excellent teachers like The Rev. Dr. John Lewis and The Rev. Dr. Jane Patterson, our study of scripture has been enriched at St. Mark’s.
One of our most popular adult classes on Sunday morning is EpiscoBasics taught by The Rev. Jonathan Wickham. People want to learn more about the wonder and mystery of worship. There is a sense that there is so much to be gained by the corporate act of worship.
The other book that frames our identity is The Book of Common Prayer. If we want to know what the Episcopal Church believes, this book expresses our beliefs in a clear and concise manner.
In my class on The Spiritual Life, we give some time to reflect on what happened in worship that Sunday. We Episcopalians reflect on our convictions about faith and life by reflecting on our worship. Part of our reflection revolves around what difference our worship will make in our daily lives and work. In all of our small groups we discern our identity as God’s People as we “love God with all our heart, and with all our soul, and with all our mind.”
In his book, A People Called Episcopalians, The Rev. Dr. John H. Westerhoff claims “Our primary identity is as a community of practice. That is, we are bound together by our liturgy rather than doctrinal emphasis…Orthodoxy for us is right worship…Our life of prayer shapes our beliefs and behaviors…our liturgy is at the heart of our identity and the basis for our theological and ethical convictions.” (pp.3-4)
The study of the Bible and worship with the Book of Common Prayer helps guide and strengthen us to be the People of God in the world. If we were to treat either of these books as optional, we would stand to lose our primary identity. As we enter the rich seasons of Advent and Christmas, I invite you to take part in one of our many Bible studies and worship with us as we celebrate the birth of Christ.
If individuals want to know who we are and what is important to us we usually invite them to worship with us. Worship is the place where people find a sense of our community and what we hope to accomplish in the world with the grace of God.

etreat Leader: The Rev. Mike Marsh, Rector of St. Philip’s Episcopal Church, Uvalde, Texas The Rev. Mike Chalk and the Rev. Dr. Jane Patterson will assist with the morning. In the peaceful setting of The WorkShop, along the banks of Salado Creek, we will take some time out from the rush of the days before Christmas to focus on the spiritual significance of the season of Advent. Mike Marsh, who has studied and prayed with icons for many years, will guide us in an experience of praying with some of the traditional icons of the Church. Advent is a season for contemplating how the material and spiritual worlds are connected, and icons are one of the ways to experience how
material things may mediate the unfathomable love of God. Spoken reflections will alternate with times for prayer, walking, journaling. Bring a Bible, and anything you might want for your quiet time, such as a journal, art supplies, camera, etc. Coffee and light snacks will be provided. Please register by calling Katherine Buzzini at 210-599-4224, or e-mail kbuzzini@theworkshop-sa.org.

Here are some guidelines to help you prepare: Please make at least 10 dozen cookies of one kind. Please no store-bought cookies. Please put cookies in a marked box, clearly marking the name of the cookie and if they contain nuts
If you have any questions, please don’t hesitate to call Grace Ohlenbusch or any member of the Parish Choir. We will be updating you frequently as we get closer to December 11.
Please call or e-mail Kristin Roach or Grace Ohlenbusch if you intend to participate so that we can anticipate how many boxes and tables we will need.
Of course, we will also need buyers of cookies on the day of the event. This is a great way to help you prepare for your holiday entertaining and gift-giving.

Children’s Ministries Celebrate All Saints’ Day By Jennifer Allison, Co-Director of Children’s Ministries

n case you didn’t notice, there were unusual creatures and characters spotted around St. Mark’s on Sunday October 31st. From the procession behind the children’s chapel cross, to the 58 costumed kids on the 2nd floor, our All Saints Celebration was a huge success. Many thanks to Lisa Westmoreland and Ellen Cotton for all of the hard work and preparation that made our day so special. Kids started in their Sunday School rooms then rotated through four different activities. In
one room, kids had to “ Guess the Goo” in four different containers. In another, kids made spiced tea to take home to share with their family. In the craft room, kids chose from three different masks to make and wear home. Several kittens and jack-olanterns could be seen exiting the second floor. The final room, was a “make and eat cupcake” snack. Thank you again to all who helped and participated in this wonderful fellowship event.
