Whether behind the scenes or center stage, these dedicated individuals helped us realize yet another successful season! The remarkable presence of CAM, SAMM, Good Samaritan Community Services, San Antonio Christian Dental Clinic, Diocese of West Texas (also representing Habitat for Humanity) and Morningside Ministries also made a touching and significant impact. We are currently confirming that all expenses have been appropriately captured for the 2014 Dick Johnson and Bishop Gary Lillibridge Lenten Luncheons. However, I am pleased to serving up biscuits. report that as of April 22, 2014, Lenten Luncheons has yielded a net surplus of $5,000! According to our business administrator, Emmet Faulk, “We do not expect a significant change in this encouraging report. We look forward to completing our task when we distribute the surplus among the ministries listed above.” I thank you, our award-winning cast and crew. Good stewardship of Treasures of St. Mark's by Patrice Oliver, 2013-2014 Altar Guild Co-Chair
E
aster is the time the church celebrates the resurrection of our Lord from the dead. With Easter there is newness, excitement, a beautifully adorned church, and happy Easter people. You may also notice an extra shine to the holy hardware. This year some of the treasures of St. Mark’s underwent a transformation during Lent. After many years of handling and use, some of our holy hardware needed to be repaired and restored. The interior cup of four chalices and two ciboria, used during the Eucharist, were (re) gold-lined. Their silver exteriors were buffed and polished. Three brass processional crosses and Photo credit: Patrice Oliver two sets of brass torches, carried by acolytes, were repaired, buffed, polished and lacquered. Noles-Davis Restoration in Dallas provided the professional expertise and talented craftsmen to restore our historic treasures to their original beauty. These St. Mark’s treasures have been given new life, extending their historical continuity, connecting our past with the present. Thanks to stewardship support from the people of St. Mark’s, we are good stewards of these precious gifts and historic treasures.
Palm Cross Making Thank You! Thank you to all of the palm cross makers: Susan Wilson and Anne Church, Kendall Schrader, Barbara Ward, Sallie Peacock, Clytie Phelps, Jane Satel, Nancy Reed, Linda Hulett, Derrick Dodge, Linda and Frank Jones, Dee and George Whiteside, Josie Garza, Jenny Therkelsen, Patrice Oliver and Ann Coiner. After the last Lenten Lunch, we made about 600 palm crosses for Palm Sunday. It was a fun and productive gathering.

Through these ancient statements of our faith, Williams offers us a well informed, compassionate guide through the richness of the creeds.

Souvenirs of Faith, led by James Dennis, O.P. This course is based upon Rowan Williams' book Tokens of Trust (available in our bookstore). With varying commitment or understanding, most of us say some form of the creed every week. We wonder, "What does it mean to believe in God? Can God possibly be almighty in the midst of so much evil and disaster? How am I to understand the meaning of Jesus Christ's ministry and resurrection?" We ask, "What is the purpose and the role of the church today?" We wonder what will it cost to follow Jesus in this broken and confusing world.

New Sunday Eucharist at 4:00 PM Did you know‌ A NEW WEEKLY SERVICE has been added each Sunday at 4pm in Bethlehem Chapel. The service is small, usually 10-20 people, and uses a Rite III Holy Eucharist, which includes the reading of Scripture, prayer for the world and the church, exchanging the Peace, and the consecrating and sharing of the Gifts of God. This order can be found on page 400 of the Book of Common Prayer. We gather together and share in a contemplative space. Casual and family-friendly, all are welcome!

St. Mark’s Youth Retreat 2014 As a youth group, there are few things that St. Mark’s youth look more forward to than the youth retreat. Each fall, they start to ask questions: “Where is the retreat this year?” “Can we play Nuke ‘Em again?” and “Will there be a blob?” This year’s retreat may have been much colder and cloudier than usual, but it did not disappoint. From Friday, April 4th, through Sunday, April 6th, St. Marks’ teenagers retreated at TBarM in New Braunfels for a weekend focused on building relationships among our youth, and strengthening their relationships with God using two pieces of scripture. The first was 1 Peter 4:7-11; The end of all things is near. Therefore be alert and of sober mind so that you may pray. Above all, love each other deeply, because love covers over a multitude of sins. Offer hospitality to one another without grumbling. Each of you should use whatever gift you have received to serve others, as faithful stewards of God’s grace in its various forms. If anyone speaks, they should do so as one who speaks the very words of God. If anyone serves, they should do so with the strength God provides, so that in all things God may be praised through Jesus Christ. To him be the glory and the power for ever and ever.
Serve each other, 7) Speak the words of God. After a busy Saturday of team building and group challenges in the morning and a couple of “high rope” elements in the afternoon, youth were paired off, and asked to discuss this list, and share with a partner. They got into in-depth conversations about what this scripture means to them, and what it will mean to them moving forward. The second scripture was this from Isaiah; Even youths grow tired and weary, and young men stumble and fall; but those who hope in the Lord will renew their strength. They will soar on wings like eagles; they will run and not grow weary, they will walk and not be faint.
Throughout the weekend, we discussed how certain things get us “pumped up” in our relationship with Christ. Youth discussed how retreats, diocesan events, and youth group meetings can all get them pumped up, and make them feel “on fire” for God. We also discussed how quickly the routine of daily life fizzles that fire into sometimes a smoldering pile of ashes. They discussed things in life that rob them of that fire and make it difficult to remain faithful to God. Naming different pressures and realities of middle and high school life can be very powerful.
This passage from Isaiah reminds us that it is normal to grow tired, but that our strength is in the Lord. We asked the youth to talk about what was making them weak, or exhausted and throughout the weekend, we reminded them to look to the Lord for strength. Sometimes the strength that we are looking for is physical, and sometimes it is mental or spiritual. Sometimes, we can find strength in one another. Keeping our reading from Peter in mind and our “to-do” list, the Isaiah scripture can help us to accomplish several items. With their partner from the 1 Peter activity, youth were asked to exchange contact information. They were then given a card that contained both verses, and asked to keep it where they will see it frequently. In the spirit of being
Peter gives us a to-do list to help us through those times when our fire fades and we struggle with our faith. Youth turned this scripture into a comprehensible list: 1) Think clearly, 2) Control yourself, 3) Pray, 4) Love one another, 5) Be good neighbors, 6)

neighborly and serving one another, they were challenged to remind each other of the card and verses in times of need. As a group, it is vital to be able to reach out and remind each other that the Lord will renew our strength, as long as we are patient.
We'd like to extend a special thank you to Trevor Stokes and Dylan Fox for providing amazing worship music throughout the weekend. We'd also like to thank Mark Arnold for assisting with transportation. The retreat wouldn't have been such a success without the three of you.
The weekend wasn't all about teaching, but the lessons that youth learned related to everything that they did. Ask them about the fun activities that they took part in. Next time you're at church, ask some youth who can make the best Pterodactyl sound without smiling at you; ask them if they conquered the “leap of faith,” or the “bush whacker.” We are blessed at St. Mark's to have such a great group of youth who are active participants: as acolytes, choir members, choral scholars, and youth group members. Sharing some time away, to reflect on middle and high school, and strengthen their relationships with Christ through scripture, and mental and physical challenges, has continued to develop the bond that makes this group so special. We are so proud of these kids.

MARK’S YOUTH MINISTRIES YOUTH MINISTRY GATHERINGS Sunday Morning Youth Formation Sunday’s 10:10am – 11:10am in the Youth Suite On Sunday mornings youth will be split up into two groups; current 7th‐ 9th grades and current 10th ‐12th grad‐ ers. Following some large group discussion youth will take a deeper look at the weeks readings and Gospel and to gain new insight and understanding into some of the stories of Jesus’ walk on this earth.

he Vestry Discernment Committee, made up of the six outgoing vestry members, the last Senior Warden and facilitated by the Rev. Carol Morehead, have begun their work for the next Vestry election in the fall. They have developed a list of Vestry Challenges for 2015, issues that will most likely shape the vestry's agenda in 2015; and a list of Vestry Qualities, that they are hoping to see distributed among the new vestry members. No one person is expected to have all of these qualities! Members of the congregation are invited to contribute names to the list of people that the Discernment committee is considering. The Discernment Committee will then take all of the names that have been suggested, and match them with the qualities and characteristics described below, together with other Chuck Harvey, Chair considerations such as balancing ages represented on the vestry, men and women, areas of involvement in the parish, etc. Please keep in mind that any vestry nominee must be:
At least 18 years old A communicant in good standing in the Episcopal Church (baptized, confirmed, received) A pledging member of the parish, working towards tithing Regular in attendance and participation

Vestry Challenges in 2015: The vestry will continue to become informed about healthy models of coping with institutional change, and will encourage appropriate continuity among the various programs and ministries of the parish. Acculturating the new Rector, as well as modeling a willingness to be changed by new leadership for the congregation. The vestry will continue to discern whether there are issues raised in the parish profile that they want to address in early 2015. Long term planning for use of the facilities The vestry will help to deepen the discipleship of the congregation by promoting parishioners’ commitment to faithfulness and stability during the early months of the new Rector’s service. Regular, timely communication with the parish remains a priority in 2015, as well as, the emphasis and commitment to transparency in their work. The vestry will increase its knowledge of the current organizational systems of the parish, so that knowledge of the systems will be distributed more widely among the parish’s leadership. Emphasis will be placed upon knowing the systems that are important to us, that are part of our identity, so that we are clearer about what is functioning well, what is ripe for change, and what might be needed to support the new Rector.

Here are some events that are or will be scheduled where your attendance will be important as a leader at St. Mark’s: Annual Parish Meeting, set for Sunday, October 19, which is the date for election of new vestry members for 2015; Vestry Orientation; Vestry Retreat, often scheduled in January or February; Vestry Term starts in January, 2015 and meetings take place on 3rd Tuesday of each month; Expected participation at other important St. Mark's events. Expected to attend, listen and observe at one or both vestry meetings in November and December, before the start of their term. Expected to serve on the Discernment Committee during their senior year

Boy & Girl Choir Musical & Ice Cream Social Sunday, May 18 at 5:00p.m. In Gish Hall Join us on Sunday, May 18 at 5:00p.m. in Gish Hall for the The Lost Boy: Young Jesus in the Temple. Commissioned by Helen Kemp for the Kemp Endowment for Church Music Symposium at Westminster Choir College of Rider University, The Lost Boy tells the story of Luke 2:39-52. Mary and Joseph lose track of twelve-year-old Jesus for three days, and when they finally find him, he is sitting in the temple demonstrating with his questions a great understanding of God. There will be an Ice cream social to follow!
Trinity University Fraternity Donates Time to Serve St. Mark’s Kitchen Members of the Trinity University chapter of Phi Sigma Chi fraternity offered their time in service to St. Mark’s this Easter. The young men supported Leah Thomas and the kitchen crew in boxing and labeling the beautiful Easter cookies offered to the Parish. The cookie prep was part of a community service project of the organization.

Kindness On a recent Wednesday evening, families learned a bit about “kindness� as one of the fruit of the Spirit (Galatians 5:22) and children kindly made a basket of snacks to give to officers at a local police station.
An Invitation to St. Mark's/Christ Church VBS 2014! Get ready to go out into the wilderness, where God guides and provides. Join us as we make the Bible come to life through crafts, games, and daily visits to Moses' tent, where you will be part of the miraculous story of the Israelites' escape to the Holy Land. You will bake bread, sing and dance to fun and meaningful worship songs, and visit the Israelite camp for crafts and snacks. When? June 9th to 12th from 9:00 to 12:00 Where? Christ Episcopal Church (510 Belknap Place 78212) Who's Invited? Children ages 4 through incoming 5th graders. (children under 4 may register if there is an adult in the family volunteering at VBS). What can you do to help? Adults, Teens, Preteens: we need your help to make this event a success! If you're interested in helping (leading small groups, helping with crafts, games, decorations, etc), please let us know.

Make a card for the teachers Sunday, May 18 is our last day of regular Sunday School for the semester. Please have your child make a home-made thank-you card for their Sunday School teachers. Get out construction paper and markers on your kitchen table and have your child create a work of art for this day. After the 9:00 service there was a petting zoo, pony, donkey, crafts, and snacks . . . something for all ages. We remembered the first Palm Sunday and the festival atmosphere of the crowds who welcomed Jesus into Jerusalem. They shouted “Hosanna” and hailed him as king. We sang the hymn in church “All glory, laud, and honor to thee, Redeemer, King! To whom the lips of children made sweet hosannas ring” for he is our eternal king.
