5

Our Learning Engagement Framework outlines an aspirational vision for St Mary’s College. For our girls to be savvy young women, articulate problem-solvers, creative thinkers and successful learners who confidently build their futures, we need to create an educational environment centred around engagement; behavioural, emotional and cognitive. When our girls are engaged on these levels, they are more likely to exceed academically, build close connections with their community and have a more positive sense of social and emotional wellbeing.

Our

St Mary’s College – A Framework for Learning Engagement

The Learning Engagement Framework was informed by the Organisation for Economic Cooperation and Development’s OECD Future of Education and Skills 2030 Position Paper: The Future We Want. Our collective inquiry and research investigation was framed around identifying what our students would require to successfully navigate their futures; academically, socially, emotionally, and ethically. Under the banner of our Vision and Mission the supporting OECD Education 2030 documents on Wellbeing, Attitudes and Values and Student Agency provided a rich and dynamic platform upon which to develop our three Elements of Engagement – Inspire, Learn, Grow. We continue to work towards building and enriching our pillars of Wellbeing, Faith and Mission and Access and Enrichment. The Australian Professional Standards for Teachers (Australian Institute for Teaching and School Leadership) guide the strategic improvement of our high-impact teaching strategies and pedagogical practices. Our specific areas of focus and key teaching strategies (developing metacognition, understanding the purpose and goals of learning, feedback to facilitate learning, developing student agency and developing meaning through questioning) are embedded in each Element – Inspire, Learn and Grow. Student engagement and improvement strategies identified in each Element are mastered through Teaching Sprints which are short, internal professional learning sessions run by teachers, for teachers, to build our skill base, agility, enhance our expertise as educators, and ultimately improve student learning outcomes and achievement.
