SONG WRITING UNEARTHED (Half year course – 1 unit. This course is offered in both Semester 1 and Semester 2 but you can only choose it once). This course is a practical introduction to song writing, incorporating the creative skills used by song writers in the contemporary music industry. You will create, rehearse and present new original music and learn about rhythm, pitch, melody, chord progressions and song structures, and lyric writing. Focus will be on the popular music genre. Class activities include: • rehearsing your instrument of choice – fostering new skills for beginners and developing greater instrumental techniques and musicianship for the more advanced musician • writing your own original material and developing a portfolio of songs • music appreciation – develop an in-depth understanding of popular music • use up-to-date computer technology to enhance and record your songs • understanding the roles, responsibilities and activities in Contemporary Music performance • gain insight into the making money from your songs (Music Business and Marketing) • participate in workshops, using guest musicians from the industry • professionally record and master your completed songs • perform your songs to an audience.
