Supporting families caring for people with illness and chronic conditions

Did you know?

We hold three monthly support groups. Group meetings consist of ‘round table’ discussions on topics relating to dementia and caregiving. Participants enjoy meeting new friends and sharing their thoughts, ideas and helpful hints for caring for someone with dementia. Upon request, we can provide individual family sessions. We also offer several monthly group education sessions and self-help series, such as Living with Stroke and Living with Stroke and Aphasia. All services are free-of-charge. New dialysis clinic designed with comfort in mind For dialysis patients, St. Joe’s is like a second home. Many visit our renal clinic over 150 times a year for up to four hours at a time, receiving care in a space that was originally designed for six patients but treats up to 12 patients at once, and an additional nine patients are treated on the 2nd floor of the East Wing. Thanks to support from the Ministry of Health and a generous donor, the design has been completed for the Bachir Yerex Family Dialysis Centre, a space that will significantly increase the size and comfort of our current facility. The new centre will allow us to treat all our patients together in one space, and will provide patients and their families with a true home away from home, complete with private areas and a new water treatment and ventilation system. The new space includes room for growth to ensure we continue serving our community well into the future. Stay up to date on this project by visiting www.stjoestoronto.ca.

St. Michael’s Hospital celebrates 125 years of inspired care On July 1, 2017, when Canada celebrated the 150th anniversary of Confederation, St. Michael’s Hospital celebrated the 125th anniversary of its opening. Established in 1892 by the Sisters of St. Joseph to care for the sick and poor, St. Michael’s remains dedicated to treating all with respect, compassion and dignity. Today, the hospital continues to care for the city’s vulnerable populations as Toronto’s Urban Angel, balancing the continued commitment to the care of the poor and those most in need with providing highly specialized services to the community. In order for Providence’s patients, residents and clients to thrive and flourish, we must also support the people caring for them at home: their families. We offer formal support programs through our Scotiabank Learning Centre to families caring for people with illnesses and chronic conditions such as diabetes, stroke, heart disease, dementia, arthritis and Parkinson’s.

AUGUST 1, 2017

All three organizations were founded by the Sisters of St. Joseph, who had a special interest in creating health-care institutions to care for the most marginalized and disadvantaged in Toronto and its surrounding areas. Providence was established in 1857, St. Michael’s in 1892 and St. Joseph’s in 1921. Continued from page 1

“Each of our hospitals has a long and proud history of providing excellent and compassionate care to all, particularly those who experience marginalization or disadvantage. Our new health network presents an opportunity for us to reinvest in patient care as well as help patients and their families obtain better access to higher quality, integrated care,” said Dr. Robert Howard, interim president and CEO. The three organizations will continue the process of streamlining our back-office operations across the three sites and sharing our expertise and resources, in order to carry on our work as a single organization in the most effective way.
