Hoi and welcome "Hoi" is the word you will hear the most during your time in Liechtenstein. It means "hello" and, with a warm smile on the speaker’s lips, it stands for "nice to see you". It also means "welcome to Liechtenstein" and is an invitation to find out more about our country and culture.

In this magazine we would like to present to you our own personal Liechtenstein – how we live, love and enjoy our country. Of course, we have also included a few insider tips on the best things to see, do and explore. We look forward to welcoming you!

The name Liechtenstein was first mentioned in 1136. The principality of the same name was founded in 1719 and looks back on a 300-year history.

A modern monarchy

Princely Family: continuity and stability H.S.H. Prince Hans-Adam II, the ruling prince since 1989, has placed particular focus on Liechtenstein’s independence in foreign policy matters and, as a result, on consolidating its position as a sovereign state. In 2004, Prince Hans-Adam II entrusted his son, H.S.H. Hereditary Prince Alois, to exercise sovereign powers as his representative.

Prince and people Every year, events are held bringing together the Princely Family and the people of Liechtenstein in celebration. One such occasion is the National Day, which takes place on 15 August in the grounds of Vaduz Castle. The official ceremony is followed by a fair in the centre of Vaduz.

38 557 inhabitants

160 km²

Liechtenstein is the smallest country in the German-speaking region. Every day more than 20 000 people living in neighbouring countries cross the border into Liechtenstein to work in one of the 38 000 jobs here.

Liechtenstein is five and a half times smaller than Berlin. More than 40 % of the country is covered in forest. Just 11 % is used for residential purposes.

Changeable Liechtenstein is located at the intersection between two climate zones: a wet and cool zone, and a dry and warm zone. Relatively little precipitation falls here. The average temperature is quite high at 10 °C thanks to the warm Föhn wind.

Unique form of government

Leisure Visitors can look forward to mountain trails and idyllic landscapes. Liechtenstein is the perfect place to get away from it all and enjoy the beauty of nature.

11 municipalities Vaduz is the capital of Liechtenstein. Planken is the smallest municipality with just 472 inhabitants. Schaan is the largest of the 11 municipalities with a population of 6039.

According to the Constitution of 1921, Liechtenstein is a "constitutional hereditary monarchy on a democratic and parliamentary basis".

Tourism Liechtenstein welcomes more than 600 000 visitors from around the world each year. It is a haven for outdoor sports in both summer and winter.

Diverse Liechtenstein is home to 55 mammal, 140 bird, 7 reptile, 10 amphibian and 24 fish species, making every outdoor adventure a journey of discovery.

Multicultural Despite its small size, Liechtenstein is home to people from 108 nations.

Swiss franc

Safety & security

Euro or dollar? Neither! Since 1924 Liechtenstein has used the Swiss franc as its official currency, though euros are also accepted.

Liechtenstein has one of the lowest levels of crime anywhere in the world.

LIECHTENSTEIN – PRINCELY MOMENTS

Summit moments Up at the top of a mountain, on the summit, it’s an incredible feeling – a feeling like no other. It’s the reward for the long, often tough ascent. The preparation, the determination and the hard work have paid off. I’ve made it. Mountains have always taught me one thing: to be modest, to not ask for too much, to stay calm even in extreme situations, to keep searching for new opportunities and to grab every chance which presents itself. These days, when I get to the top – be it the top of a mountain or the top

of my profession as a hotel manager and a chef – I have nothing left to prove to myself. Now I take my own path, at my own pace. These days it’s all about enjoying the moment. At the same time, I will always have a desire burning inside me to experience new things, to keep moving forward. I know that without that passion and drive nothing is possible. LIECHTENSTEIN – PRINCELY MOMENTS

Psst, my secret tip for you … If there is any place in Liechtenstein which truly lives up to the billing "princely moments" then it is the Fürstensteig Trail. Powerful, imposing, mystical. Just a few minutes into the hike, after turning the third corner, hikers will find themselves in front of an awe-inspiring rock formation embodying the power and force of this unique landscape. Whenever I gaze up at this giant work of art shaped by wind and rain – as Liechtenstein and

the Rhine Valley slowly wake in the valley far below – I am reminded how small and insignificant we are as humans compared to the might of Mother Nature. Those are moments which make me feel humble. Everything becomes easier – life’s problems appear small, giving way to a wave of euphoria. It’s hard to put into words – you have to be up there and experience it yourself to really understand. That’s what discovering the Fürstensteig Trail is all about. Hubertus Real

Up at the top, I enjoy majestic views of mountain chains such as the Falkniskette and the Schesaplanastock as well as down to Malbun, Gamperdona and Valüna – all the sweat and hard work required to get here are forgotten. Time to enjoy!

I take off my hiking boots and sit down for a hearty meal. My choice is "Rösti & Spiegelei", comprising a potato fritter with fried egg. I enjoy the sun on my face and breathe in the fresh mountain air before it is time to head back.

I reach Tälehöhe. Every now and then I meet another hiker doing the same walk in the other direction. After descending through the Vaduzer Täli I reach Malbun, where a great hike comes to an end.

I order an ice cream. Before the bus comes to take me back down into the valley, I have a chance to enjoy the fabulous mountain pano rama of Malbun as I eat my cool snack. The perfect end to a perfect hike!

Out of the house and into nature! Here in Liechtenstein, that’s not a marketing slogan but everyday life. We love spending time outdoors as a family exploring the mountains and doing sport together. Whenever we can, we take to the trails and head for the heights. The kids love it if along the way we come across a little mountain stream – the perfect natural playground! Up at the top of the mountain we make sure to write our names into the summit book before walking down to the hut for a hearty snack or meal. As a family our

favourite sections of the Liechtenstein Trail are those where there is plenty to see, do and discover. That can be anything from standing on a sandbank and skimming stones on the Rhine to cooling of in summer in the Grossabünt swimming lake. Here in Liechtenstein, relaxing always means being at the heart of the action. And for us the action starts right outside our front door! Andreas, Jette, Luis, Alba and Leon Gstöhl

LIECHTENSTEIN – PRINCELY MOMENTS

I grew up surrounded by art: paintings, sculptures, photographs. Art is an integral part of who I am – I see it in everything around me, from nature and life to the creative arts. I make an effort to appreciate it, to enjoy it in my own way. It’s always about atmosphere and emotions. Art experienced together or alone in quiet contemplation. Art created by oneself or by others. Art in museums, public places, theatres or concert halls. Art thus becomes part of a country’s culture, its identity. It is shared and brings people together. By 1930 we had become so famous that the Liechtenstein Postal Museum was founded for us and our descendants. It remains open until today and charts the history of postage stamps in Liechtenstein.

Since the first Liechtenstein postage stamp was issued in 1912, we have become closely associated with the country – and have always paid great attention to our appearance. Only outstanding artists have been permitted to demonstrate their skill by turning "normal postage stamps" into tiny works of art from Liechtenstein. This rich tradition continues today. In the still of the night

Psst, my secret tip for you … Despite all my races and other obligations, I always find time to get away from it all for a few precious moments of peace and quiet. One of the best ways is on a full-moon walk from the centre of Malbun to SassSeelein. There is an amazing atmosphere at night as I pass the Alpenhotel Vögeli and head up to the Friedenskapelle chapel in Malbun, where the well-maintained Sassweg Trail begins. If you turn around after just a few minutes and look back you will see the lights of Malbun nestling in a peaceful landscape of mountains and valleys.

I like walking the Sassweg Trail with friends. We don’t always talk that much, but sharing this silence with someone else makes it twice as beautiful. The bright moon high above reflects on the glistening snow as we quietly crunch our way through the forest. Everything looks like it has been wrapped up in cotton wool. The whole landscape, with its shadows and contours, takes on a totally new appearance. "Idyllic" is the best word to describe the atmosphere on the Sassweg Trail at full-moon. Tina Weirather

Personal winter adventures 23 km of ski pistes

Idyllic winter walking trail

When I think of "my" resort of Malbun, then I think of great skiing for all ages and all abilities, from beginners to experts. I also think of children laughing and having fun in the Malbi Park as they take their first tentative turns on snow, the sunny slopes at Sareis and the powder in Täli and Hocheck.

From romantic moonlight walks for couples to family walks in the dazzling sunshine, the Sassweg Trail is one of the best ways to enjoy the winter landscape. It starts at the Friedenskapelle chapel in Malbun and leads through steep snow walls, thick forests and snow-filled hollows to Sass-Seelein and back to the Schneeflucht ski lift.

Tobogganing in the snowy landscape

Why not use your visit to Liechtenstein to try out something new? Steg-Valüna has a lovely network of perfectly groomed cross-country skiing trails suitable for both the more relaxing Classic technique and the more dynamic Skating technique. There is even a floodlit trail for those keen to ski in the evening.

Tobogganing is a great sport for all the family. Malbun has two toboggan runs to choose from. Sücka-Steg offers the chance to warm up with a cheesy fondue in the Berggasthaus Sücka before whizzing back down into the valley, while the toboggan run near the chapel in Malbun is close to the cosy and welcoming Alpenhotel Vögeli.

The hearty breakfasts served in Malbun’s hotels and guesthouses don’t make it easy to get up at the crack of dawn and hit the slopes, but we manage to drag ourselves out of bed and are rewarded with first tracks on the freshly groomed Hocheck piste. What a feeling!

The good thing about Malbun is that all the pistes are joined together and form a single network. We ski past the Malbi-Park and catch a glimpse of our youngest kids learning to ski while our older ones are zooming around the slopes in the Täli area of the resort.

Today we’ve decided to take it easy and catch some rays on the sunny terrace at Sareis. We have promised our two boys plenty of action in the evening with a little ice climbing, while our daughter is really looking forward to visiting the K-Bum theatre.

Carnival – the fifth season of the year

Carnival forms a major part of Liechtenstein’s cultural tradition. As the season reaches its climax in February, locals and visitors gather in Liechtenstein’s traditional carnival hotspots to enjoy colourful processions, upbeat brass band music and carnival balls.
