Councilmember Jose Huizar We recognize and honor Councilmember Jose Huizar as a great Downtown Connector and for his many accomplishments to revitalize Downtown. Councilmember Huizar has represented Downtown for the last 7 years he has been in City Council, at first representing 40% of Downtown and since July 2012 representing over 90% of Downtown. In the short time he has been a Councilmember, he has made a significant difference in Downtown through several initiatives in particular: • Councilmember Huizar was the leader behind Bringing Back Broadway to re‐envision the historic Broadway corridor, part of an important National Register Historic District, with its beautiful historic theaters and retail establishments. Bringing Back Broadway is a public‐private partnership initiative focused on an ambitious ten‐year plan to revitalize the historic Broadway district between 2nd Street and Olympic Boulevard. For the first few years after the initiative was launched in 2008, the Council Office had to encourage and cajole businesses and developers to look at Broadway; now economic revitalization in the area has taken off and people come to the Council Office specifically interested in Broadway. • Councilmember Huizar created a framework to bring the beloved Streetcar back to Downtown Los Angeles. • Councilmember Huizar spearheaded the competition for a replacement for the 6th Street Bridge, a $400 million effort which will also help in revitalizing the LA River. • Councilmember Huizar has worked to bring hundreds of acres of open space, new parks and park upgrades to park‐poor areas, including pioneering the creation of parklets on Spring Street and other areas. He has recently authored motions to revisit the Quimby Ordinance to make better use of the funds collected. • Being on the Metro Board, Councilmember Huizar pushed for the Regional Connector, which will help Downtown connectivity.

• As Vice‐Chair of PLUM for the last 6 years and soon to be Chairman, Councilmember Huizar found funding for and will oversee the development of the Downtown Community Plan update and brand new Downtown development and zoning code.
Carol Schatz We recognize and honor Carol Schatz for her many accomplishments to revitalize Downtown and for being the ultimate Downtown Connector. Carol E. Schatz is the first woman to serve as President and CEO of the Central City Association (CCA) of Los Angeles. Carol also serves as President and CEO of the Downtown Center Business Improvement District (DCBID), a coalition of 450 property owners in the core of Downtown Los Angeles. All those that work and live Downtown owe much to Carol’s efforts. Nearly 23 years ago Carol joined CCA, and Downtown Los Angeles has never been the same since. Carol has done much to improve Downtown, but in particular: • Under Carol’s direction, CCA is the business advocacy leader on City and County issues, which has created enormous benefit for Downtown. • Carol’s vision has helped to create a 24‐Hour Downtown Los Angeles. • Under Carol’s leadership, CCA has undertaken several significant initiatives to transform Downtown. She initiated the Adaptive Reuse Ordinance and has marshaled state funding and incentives to help developers convert empty office buildings to housing. CCA has worked with the City Council to resurrect the Civic Center Authority, which authorized a master plan for the area. • At Carol’s direction, CCA created the “Downtown Development Strategy” as a follow‐up to the 1985 Downtown Strategic Plan. This development plan for Downtown touches on all aspects of a revitalized Downtown from the creation of mixed‐use/mixed income projects to new transportation amenities. The Association’s advocacy on a number of pivotal projects has helped to make a difference with community stakeholders and elected officials. • It was Carol’s vision that led to the creation of the DCBID in 1997. With a budget well in excess of $5 million, the BID has made Downtown safe and clean and brought incredible new residential and commercial investment to Downtown. Carol’s standard of excellence and responsiveness has resulted in the DCBID being named the #1 BID in the City.

• Carol’s vision, hard work and perseverance have garnered much attention and praise from her peers. She has won numerous prestigious awards for her exemplary efforts.
