ewo develops and produces lighting systems for public spaces. Using our sophisticated technical products, we create solutions to control, distribute and confine light. We develop and produce the products in South Tyrol. Our company was originally involved in metal working. However, in 1996, Flora Kröss and Ernst Wohlgemuth, who have always been fascinatedby the combination of light and technology, founded ewo. Today, over 50 fulltime employees are dedicated, along with the management, to the most important goals of our company: high value, quality, reliability and durability. We see ourselves as partners in the development of holistic lighting solutions – providingcompetent advice, innovative solutions and individual design.
“High value, quality, reliability and durability are the ultimate goals of our company.” Through our choice of materials, coatings and processes for treating surfaces, we seek not only the best visual effect in each case but also to ensure that our products withstand extreme stress and that our systems continue to provide service for many years. In this brochure, we present a number of examples of our projects (beginning on p. 11) as well as the products (beginning on p. 83) that we use in the segments: Large Area Lighting, Outdoor Lighting, Urban Furniture and Architectural Lighting. Two aspects are of such central importance for our work that we specifically named them: ewoProficient (p. 70), which emphasizes the precision, performance and efficiency of our lighting scenarios, and ewoIndividual (p. 74), which stands for individualised project solutions that can only be found after gaining a comprehensive understanding of the specific demands posed by the project’s planning. In all of these segments, the implementation of LED technology makes ewo predestined to be a partner in pioneering projects. Our LED lighting unit (p. 78) was redesigned most recently in January of 2014. Its modularity and

variability makes it suited for projects of every size. 90,000 m2 on the waterfront – sustainably and efficiently illuminated
Eleven of these LED high masts, installed instead of the originally envisioned secondary reflector system, ensure safe operations after dark.
The planning, realisation and positioning of the illumination for the ‘Molo di Ponente’ (West Pier) terminal mark a major step in the development of LED use on high masts. This lighting system, in turn, brings the Port of Venice closer to establishing a sustainable infrastructure. How can LED technology, with all of its advantages, be brought up to the performance level of conventional floodlight systems required in an area used to provide professional technical and logistical services? The central challenge was to achieve suitable emission characteristics. While we had already implemented LED light oriented on a longitudinal axis for the illumination of streets in 2010, the 90,000 m 2 of the terminal represented a new departure for the industry as a whole in this respect. In order to cast sufficient light ‘into the depths’ of the space, we beganmaking calculations for a new type of lens. A short time later, the result of our work was ready for implementation: the DP 31 lighting unit optimised for the illumination of open spaces and large areas.
The area is illuminated during the night-time hours by 2,600 of these lighting units. In the large central processing area, which measures 75,000 m 2, they are integrated into 11 ‘T-System’ high masts. The illumination of the port complieswith the technical standard for class CE2 lighting under EN 13201, which means higher requirements for light intensity and consistency. The advantages of LED technology in the case of a project of this size are immense: the area is provided with white light, which is subjectively judged to be brighter and displays a higher ColourRendering Index. That improves visi bility on site and makes it easier to work. At the same time, the system uses 80 % less electricity than the solution that was originally envisioned. Being able to precisely direct the light also prevents the emission of light into the nocturnal sky and thus takes account of the strict national guidelines against light pollution. The salty sea air represents an extremely aggressive environmental influence. By using
panel frames made of stainless steel, selecting suitable coatings and treating the surfaces, we ensure that our lighting systems withstand these environmental influences; the materials used thereby ensure the long-term benefits of the system.
ewoProficient LED systems mounted on high masts are able to provide performance comparable to conventional floodlight systems while providing light with a high Colour Rendering Index. The energy saved in comparison to the secondary reflector system originally planned equals roughly 80 %. ewo.com/proficient

Light that ensures safety
In very few areas of public life does the topic of safety play such a critical role as in air traffic, this is also true in relation to all operations surroundingaircraft on the ground: the aircraft are parked on the airport apron after they have been directed to a spot, here the passengers leave the planes, loading takes place and tech nical and logistic examinations are undertaken. Uncompromising performance, compliance with all standards, and reliability are the decisive criteria in this context. Together with Munich Airport, ewo is conducting a model project for energy efficient apron illumination. In this context, LED technology was used instead of the existing high pressure sodium illumination. The LED floodlight F32 is able to illuminate even large areas despite its compact form, it represents the first time that such solutions have been used in such implementations throughout the industry. The dimensions are oriented on proven standards, this allows them to be mounted on existing structures without any problems. From the lens to the lighting unit to the housing, the F32 was specifically developed by ewo to meet the demands of airports. Areas to be illuminated can thereby be more precisely defined than is possible with conventional technology.
The multi-layer concept – involving the overlayering of the consistently distributed light emitted by the individual LED units – ensures that no areas are left in darkness even in the event of a partial failure. The F-System can be equipped with various optical lenses. Hence, at Munich Airport another special version specifically developed for street lighting ensures optimal illumination of the service road located beyond the apron. In order to enhance the resistance to external influences, such as jet fuel and exhaust fumes, we enclose the lighting technology behind a flat glass cover that also makes it easy to clean. Light is therefore directed and distributed in a manner that fulfils the requirements of an airport , thereby complying with all of the guidelines and standards for the intensity and consistency of illumination. In relation to safety aspects, the illumination even exceeds the requirements: it can be switched on and off without delay. Since the LEDs used as the source of light have a far higher CRI (Colour Rendering Index), documents, marking and labellingcan be read quickly and accurately. In comparison to the orange hue of high pressure sodium lights, this light is perceived to be as much as 25 % brighter.
A high mast with six floodlights of this type now already requires 57 % less energy than was previously the case for a similar level of consistent illumination. The planned integration into a light management system can lead to further savings. With extremely reduced maintenance and over 50,000 hours of life, the LED solution makes an important contribution to saving resources.

The discreet illumination of a World Heritage Site
In Venice, the Piazza San Marco is referred to simply ‘la piazza’, while all of the other public squares are called ‘campi’, fields. For many centuries it has been the political, religious and social centre of the city; it is one of the most famous and beautiful urban sites in the world. ewo was commissioned by the city administration to plan and supply a basic level of night-time illumination for the entire piazza. Even the slightest architectural intervention here involves a very sensitive context: the harmonious interplay between the church, stones, doorways, towers, galleries and walls is deeply anchored in Europe’s cultural memory and attracts millions of visitors every year. The lighting elements were to be positioned on these very buildings, hence, it was important that they be as unobtrusive as possible, while at the same time providing illumination all the way to the centre of the broad space. Depending on where they were to
be positioned, various mounting and product options were available. However, with our calculations, simulations and field testing, we were pursuing a different goal: to create a uniform solution. Today, F-System lights impinge on thirteen different points around the piazza. They were planned according to a multi-layer principle. Ten lighting units installed in one product focus on the same square of a grid. Within the piazza, the lighting fixtures play almost no architectural role. The slender fixtures can only be detected by those who know where they are located. The lighting does not catch one’s eye, nor does the way it shines interfere with the view. The entire area is illuminated deep into the middle of the piazza by an unobtrusive and, yet, clear, warm white light. At the same time, it is evenly distributed over the entire area. Regardless of where you are on the Piazza San Marco,
ewo’s products provide the desired basic level of illumination. After dark, it serves as an integrating framework for the isolated accent lights installed at cafés and on other buildings, yet it still allows the diversity and splendour of the historical buildings to play a prevalent role at all times.
ewoProficient It was only necessary to install a very few lighting fixtures of small size. They provide a uniform level of basic lighting far into the middle of the piazza. ewo.com/proficient

XAL Competence Center, Graz The outdoor lighting for the research and development centre of this international lighting company combines a number of functions within a small space. They are all provided within a coordinated lighting concept, which includes bollard, post and pole luminaires executed in a consistent and reserved vocabulary of forms.

Every element in the right place
EL lighting elements in the posts shine in two directions.
The international company with a focus on interior lighting opened its modern Competence Center in the southern part of Graz, the city in which it is headquartered. Over 70 developers, designers and engineers work in the laboratories and open workspaces here. In the outdoor spaces, our mast lights, posts and illuminating bollards perform various lighting functions. Lighting fixtures from the FA series are installed to illuminate the park spaces on both sides of the driveway. The decisive element in this system is the sharp-edged, extruded alu miniumsection with a right angle. The lighting units installed horizontally ensure an efficient basic level of illumination for the entire parking space area in warm white.
Vis-à-vis, light from posts shines in the direction of the driveway and parking area. Three EL lighting elements are flushly mounted in the posts in a maximally reduced form. Their light, which shines downward at an angle, augments the basic level of illumination; the shadows that would be cast, if the illumination came from only one side, are thereby reduced considerably. Additional EL elements on the back of these posts impinge on the façade, accentuating the building’s contours and highlighting the ribbed structure of its surface. In order to also illuminate the walkway located between the building and the car park, an additional EL lighting fixture is integrated just above ground level. Beyond the façade, to the left and right of the
building, only the walkway is illuminated; low illuminating bollards fulfil this function. Within the context of the uniform, reduced and clear design of the three products, the form and illumination are adapted to the various areas in front of and around the building. After dark, a safe and friendly atmosphere is created.

Light for the beauty of the landscape
The downward orientation of the adjustment angle prevents glare.
The island of Capri, with its history, its landscape and tremendous views, is an icon of classic elegance and the beauty of nature. The Via Tragara dates back to the period when Roman emperors relocated their residences and sometimes even the seat of government to the island. Today, the walking path above the coastline is one of the island’s most famous promenades, with narrow alleyways leading through small arches. On the one side of the pathway, lush vegetation and walls block the view of private residences; on the other side, the ocean can be seen over a low wall. At the end of the pathway, rocks in the ocean called the Faraglioni, part of the Amalfi Coast and houses built on the cliffs of Capri come into view. Such a location also plays an important role in the evening and night hours. The concept for an
appropriately unobtrusive lighting scenario must be based on a fine sense of what is appropriate to the location. Implementing ideal concepts is a question of high quality lighting. By integrating the EL product series with its reduced forms, we were able to realise such a concept, both in relation to the installation as well as the quality of the light. Elements from the EL series are also used in other projects as façade, area and accent lights with correspondingly configured lighting units installed in the fixtures. In order not to interrupt the visual flow of the Via Tragara by using wall mounted elements, it was decided that the source of light should be fully integrated into the walls along the footpath, thereby virtually disappearing. The products of the EL system are suited for installation in
walls and posts flush with the surface. Printing on the frameless front panel can also help to obscure the constructive elements. The light fixtures are located far below eye level, preventing them from having a blinding effect. The light is directed outward at a very flat angle and impinges on the opposite wall. Objects along the way and pedestrians from the other direction are thus easily seen. The warm, soft light is consciously directed in a manner that produces fuzzy contours; the entire situation contributes to the pedestrian’s visual comfort.

An open space in which light plays different roles
In September 2010, the open-air theatre ‘Teatro dell’Ospedale Americano’ near Pisa, Tuscany, was re-inaugurated. It offers space for 850 viewers. The stylistic roots of the architecture that dates back to the 1930s can be found in Rationalism, the spatial arrangement is defined by just a few architectural elements. Thus, the location plays a greater role in determining the character of a space but provides little indication of the characteristics of a building. In the dark, the light plays a central role in definingspatial relationships. It serves to create a sense of space. Hence, the different functions of illumination at this location are extremely varied, ranging from setting radiant accents in the foreground to evenly lighting entire spaces, from emphasizing existing shapes to creating new contours through sharp contrasts of light and dark. Light thus uses physical forms as a support or as a stage.
In the stage area, the even illumination of the back wall is essential in order to make its form and volume perceptible. As needed, the stage can be bathed in different colours owing to flexibly programmable LED technology. In illuminating the stairways, a technical safety requirement opens up new design possibilities; the arrangement of individual points of light creates a visual rhythm. In the peripheral areas and along the walkways around the theatre, the light outlines contours and offers a source of orientation. Additionalspotlights were used to illuminate vertical and horizontal spaces. The LED technology allows for solutions in which the effect of the light and not the lights themselves play the predominant role. ewo already became involved in designing the light during the planning stage. In an on-going dialogue with the architects in charge, installing models and trial structures proved to be a
sensibleway to approach a coherent design for the lighting. Although the illumination was realisedusing products from our standard lines, the experimental orientation of our approach was inspired by our ewoIndividual (p. 74) business segment.
The colour of the background lighting for the stage can be variably adjusted.

The renovation of a bridge from the standpoint of design and lighting technology
The Ponte Roma, which was built in 1935, was adapted to the increased safety and mobility demands placed upon it as a busy access route to a major motorway through comprehensive renovation. The illumination system was replaced by energy efficient LED technology from ewo. The positioning of the poles at relatively short intervals was predetermined as was their locationon both sides of the bridge. 22 lighting fixtures equipped with five DS 32 type lighting units each ensure safe and energy efficient illumination. They comply with the class ME2 standard under EN 13201 for motorways and class S1 for pedestrian and bicycle routes.
In addition to the requirements for modern and safe illumination systems, there were also aesthetic demands that resulted from working on an historical structure. The slender shape of both the poles and the luminaires from the FN-System product line, which are placed in relatively close proximity to each other, present a counterpoint to the massive character of the bridge. Generally, the colour of both the aluminium sections of the luminaire as well as the galvanized steel pole can be easily adapted to clients’ wishes. In Bolzano, a shimmering bronze powdercoating complements the colour of the sandstone used in the balustrade and other parts
of the bridge. ewo was able to satisfy highly specific architectural preferences in producing the metal components, for example, in relation to the way the systems were bolted onto the bridge. The Ponte Roma now radiates 4,500 Kelvin of neutral white light. At night, the bright colour of the light contributes to the recognition of this main route in the flow of traffic through Bolzano’s network of roads.

Efficiency through good planning and the right product concept
White light with a markedly higher Colour Rendering Index facilitates clearer and safer illumination than the previous solution.
The new lighting concept for Munich’s Nord allee ensures pleasant, consistent and markedly brighter illumination of the street, the pavements and the adjacent parking spaces. With the 237 luminaires based on the F-System, ewo applied the central quality characteristics of its LED-based technologies to an economical, high-performance lighting scenario – while usinga uniform product solution. The plan was to use the poles that already existedat the location. The challenge in this context proved to be their irregular placement. The area was not laid out in a uniform manner, in many places there are pavements that were to be precisely illuminated, while in others there were none. In addition, the poles for the streetlights are at varying distances from the street.
Only a sufficiently variable system can offer a consistently functional lighting scenario in such a situation without changing the position of some of the poles. ewo’s product concept also made it possible to refrain from using a second separate luminaire to illuminate the pavement behind the streetlights, as is often the case. A smaller version of the already proven F-System high-mast lighting pole can be equipped with a variable number of cold white spotlight units. The direction, the angle and the distribution characteristics of the light radiated can not only be used for every luminaire but also adjusted flexibly from one lighting unit to the next. By defining a number of appropriate configurations, it was already possible during the planning stage to ensure that all areas along
the street, the parking spaces and through to the periphery could be consistently and precisely illuminated in compliance with the technical standards.

Together with Munich Airport, ewo is conducting a model project for energy efficient apron illumination. In this conjunction, type F32 LED floodlights are replacing the existing sodiumvapour lamps.
During the course of renovating the lighting system on the Via Alto Adige, the city of Bolzano decided to switch to LED technology. It replaced luminaires that each contained six mercury-vapour lamps à 125 W.
For the redesign of a centrally located open public space, 15 illuminating bollards with LED technology and a power rating of 10.8 W each were installed instead of the 32 W that the previous solution with fluorescent lamps would have used.

This is another reason why we are pioneers in the realisation of the potential of LED technology. Since every individual project poses specific challenges, we have developed a technology with which we can adapt to them down to the very last detail.

A modular and highly variable LED lighting unit serves as the basis of ewo’s lighting systems. Its geometric dimensions remain the same in every possible configuration. As a basic building block, it can be implemented in systems of any chosen size – from bollards to high-mast systems. 1 The lighting unit consists of a lens block with three lenses, an LED module with high-performance LEDs, a gasket for IP protection and a heat dissipating mounting profile that allows for flexible adjustments within the light fixture. 2 The distribution of light results from the choice of optical lenses. Different radiation characteristics can be chosen – for streets, squares or walkways, use in high-mast systems or bollards. By using satiné versions, the illuminated area takes on softer contours. 3 The colour of the light is a function of the LEDs chosen. Three colours are available for different atmospheres: cool white (5,700 K), neutral white (4,500 K) and warm white (3,000 K). 4 The amount of light is determined by the number of lighting units used. The modular concept makes gradual adjustments possible so that only as much light is produced as is required with commensurate savings in terms of consumption. 5
5 The lighting units within a lighting fixture can be adjusted to different angle independently of one another. 6 Operating equipment can be programmed differently. We use this to adjust how the overall product functions to accommodate the most diverse contexts. Interfaces are also available for the integration into light management systems.

For us, one of the most important quality aspects is the efficiency of the overall system. The basis for this is a high degree of precision in the distribution of light. The extraordinarily large optical surface of our optical lenses contributes to this.
All lighting systems from ewo are equipped with surge protection. As a result, our products are protected against sudden surges in power when electromagnetic fields discharge.
Our LED technology is an environmentally friendly solution not only because of its energy efficiency: it also prevents light from being radiated above the horizon line (γ 90°); the night sky remains dark.

In this conjunction, we employ a multi-layer concept: every optical surface illuminates the entire assessment segment, the illumination intensity on a surface is thus achieved through the multilayered distribution of light from individual LEDs. If one fails, the consistency is maintained.
The modular assembly makes it easy to break the units down into their individual components. In the event that an LED module no longer functions as it should, it can be exchanged: the lens block and the mounting profile can continueto be used. This allows us to avoid waste and save costs.

When the critical depletion region temperature is no longer maintained, the performance of the LEDs is permanentlyreduced. The dimensions of our systems are based on efficient heat dissipation; even at high ambienttemperatures and when high levels of electricity are supplied to the LEDs.
The quality of ewo’s lighting systems has also been confirmed by external sources: our optical lenses complywith all of the demands of the EN 13201 lighting standard. The certification according to EN 62471, which is awarded by independent testing institutes, means that it has been included in the risk-free group in relation to photobiological safety. Poles are produced according to EN 40-5. The company is certified according to ISO 9001 and ISO 14001.

Large Area Lighting For nearly 15 years now, we have been focusing on high-mast systems to illuminate large areas. We have gained important experience in the field of secondary reflector systems – and were pioneers in the industry-wide conversion to LED technology. An LED lighting unit (LED Technology, p. 76) was especially developed by ewo for large area lighting; it supplies performance comparable to floodlight systems – while using up to 70 % less energy and requiringmuch less maintenance. The modular character of the technology and its diverse configuration options make it possible for us to fine tune the production technique precisely to the task at hand. Through good planning, the right solutions are created for your project. Our systems meet major challenges, such as precise light direction and reliable temperature management, using high-quality components to perform these tasks.

Façade lighting element The lighting element can be used for surface lighting of façades and can be fitted with up to 3 lighting units. Each lighting unit can be adjustedindividually and thus adapted ideally to the application.

Square lighting element This element is suitable for lighting streets and squares. Multiple elements can be integrated into the column. One lighting unit is insertedper element. You can choose various radiation characteristicsto suit the specific requirements.
The EL product series is a lighting system characterised by reduced forms. Different LED lighting elements, each with specific radiation characteristics, can be combined and their angle freely adjusted. They are installed flushly in a vertical aluminium column of any desired height or in a wall housing.
Accent lighting element This lighting element permits uniform lighting of walkways and setting of accent points. One lighting unit is inserted per element.

Urban Furniture “The starting point for the development of the Up series was the simple, rounded bollard. Different functions were added by making incisions and the main shape was converted into a broad and versatile range of products – all of them seemingly floating in the air on a cushion of light.” Torbjørn Anderssen, Norway Says Up is the first joint project by ewo and the Norwegian design group Norway Says. The series encompasses lighting bollards, bicycle stands, park benches and other objects designed for the urban environment. Their combination of design, technology and light makes public spaces more attractive and liveable.
