Flooring factsheet Carpet care guide from WOOLSAFE The WOOLSAFE Mark has gone Green! The WOOLSAFE Organisation has teamed up with ecolabelling authorities Green Seal and EcoLogo in North America, to enable those WOOLSAFE approved products that are ecologically responsible to be recognised and promoted as such.
The Green WOOLSAFE Mark identifies those products that not only are the most suitable for wool and other quality carpets, but also have the right environmental characteristics.
Regular Maintenance
Regular cleaning will extend the life of a carpet and maintain its appearance.Vacuum clean regularly and thoroughly, which removes gritty dirt that can damage the fibres. Deal with spillages as soon as possible, preferably the moment they occur.
Periodic Cleaning
When the carpet or rug reaches a stage where it could do with a really good clean, you can either do the job yourself, or you can call in a specialist carpet cleaning company.
If you are considering cleaning the carpet or rug yourself make sure to use only WOOLSAFE- approved products. Look for this mark on the bottle or package: WOOLSAFE-approved carpet care products have been independently and scientifically tested and are safe and effective for cleaning and maintaining all types of carpets and rugs.
General Rules for Spot Removal • Soak up liquids with white kitchen roll, tissues, toilet roll or clean cloth
• Scoop up or scrape off solids
Chemspec Europe is one of the first WOOLSAFE Licensees in the UK to have a ‘green’ product certified. It is expected that other products will follow shortly.
For the widest range of WOOLSAFE approved products www.chemspec-europe.com
• Try to identify unknown spots prior to treatment – if unsure, use solvent first • Always work from the edge of the spot inwards • BLOT, do NOT ru b
• Use small quantities of spot remover at a time, applied to a cloth, NOT directly to the spot; work into the spot with a small, soft brush or sponge
• Take care with applying solvents to bitumen-backed carpet tiles • When using solvents always ensure there is plenty of fresh air ventilation • Always thoroughly rinse out water-based spotters with clean water • Dry the spot, if possible, with a hair dryer
Housekeeping Tips for Carpets and Rugs Entrance or walk-off mats
The use of entrance mats at all outside entrances to the house is highly recommended, as they will significantly reduce the rate at which the carpet will soil. They should be of adequate size to allow street dirt to be removed from shoe soles and must be cleaned regularly themselves. Protective treatments Many carpets come with a protective fibre treatment to reduce problems with staining and soiling. These treatments, while effective in many ways, are not bullet-proof and will eventually wear off. Quick response to spills and regular cleaning is still required.
Carpets that have no protector applied by the manufacturer can be treated after installation on the floor by a WOOLSAFE accredited carpet cleaning company. (To find the nearest WOOLSAFE Certified Operator in your area visit our website: www.woolsafe.org and go to the PRIVATE HOUSEHOLDER section.)
Beware of products claiming to be safe on all fibres, including wool. It might be true, but if it does not have the WOOLSAFE mark, it is not endorsed by most carpet manufacturers!

Flooring factsheet Carpet trouble-shooter COLOUR MATCHING
Carpets are produced in batches - known as creels - and usually each batch produces between 500m2 - 3000m2 in a single width, depending on the creel size. Whilst the recipe used by the dyer remains constant, and is followed to the letter, in each separate production the colour reproduction will vary from batch to batch. However production is matched back to the original or master sample to ensure that the colour remains ‘within a commercial tolerance’.
This process if not an exact science and a commercial tolerance is subjective but nevertheless is usually the professional judgement of the head dyer based on his/her experience. A greater level of tolerance is required on blended colours (Heathers etc). To ensure perfect colour matching it is advisable that a single width be used in any installation requiring exact colour matching.
N.B. Carpets which are laid with the pile travelling in different directions, even though they be from the same batch will appear not to match. For further information please check with the manufacturers recommendations.
SAMPLES
The samples held by individual retailers may not be from the same batch as current production and therefore should be used as a guide and not an exact colour match.
The original carpet tile
SHEDDING
All cut pile carpets will lose short fibre, which is created during production when spun yarn is cut for tuft formation. These fibres fall onto the surface of the pile and appear as ‘fluff’.
The effect varies with yarn type and may be removed without detrimental effect upon the carpet by vacuum cleaning. This excess fibre is only a small fraction of the total fibre contained in the carpet.
PULLED LOOPS
This information is given by responsible manufacturers to help you help your customer to make an informed choice.
Pulled loops occur only in looped pile carpet where one or more loops in the continuous pile is pulled through the primary backing of the carpet. This is usually due to some local condition, possibly some sharp object which has caught in a loop in situ and has resulted in a pull. Pulled loops are easily dealt with by trimming the offending end level with the rest of the pile. They should not be left as this could result in further loops being pulled and developing into a ladder.
• shedding • pulled loops
SPROUTING
Occasionally an odd tuft or two can work its way to the surface and stand proud of the rest of the pile. This is probably due to one end of the tuft being longer than the other i.e. J shaped tuft instead of V shaped. Remedial action merely requires that the offending tufts be scissor trimmed level with the rest of the pile. They should never be pulled out.
SHADING
Shading occurs because the pile of the carpet has become crushed, flattened or brushed in a different direction to the natural lie of the pile whilst in situ. This causes light reflection at differing angles resulting in the creation of light and dark patches on the carpet. This will occur on all pile fabrics but can be more noticeable on plainer carpets because the shadows created by pile pressure will not be disguised by a heavy pattern or design.
STATIC
Carpets do not produce static but like other household fabrics and objects have the capacity to store it. Static is caused by the build up of static electricity upon personnel in a dry environment and is discharged when a person makes contact with an object which can conduct electricity (i.e. door handle or filing cabinets, etc). The static charges will vary in intensity depending upon the individual, air humidity and the contact materials. Static is more usually associated with synthetic materials as they do not retain moisture very well but it can and does occur with wool in very dry room conditions.
include the measures Preventative introduction of moisture into the room or in situ carpet treatment.
FADING ON WOOL
Carpets made from wool can and do fade in use. The degree of fade can vary depending on the colour chosen and the local conditions to which the carpet is subjected. Fading can be caused by exposure to ultra violet light which is found in daylight, but is accelerated when sunlight shines directly onto the carpet. This has the effect of lightening or “Bleaching” the colour just as exposure to sunlight will lighten human hair. Wool is after all animal hair. Protection should be given to carpets exposed to such conditions just as you would protect other furniture or fabrics.
A complaint on fading would be considered justified if it failed to meet the required shade standard when tested to the British Standard BS1006 (1990).
• sprouting • shading • static • fading • pile reversal • shedding • flattening • soiling
PILE REVERSAL (SEE SHADING)
Like shading, this occurs when the pile or nap of the carpet changes direction and thus reflects light at different angles showing the effects of shading which can become permanent. It is also described as ‘watermarking’. This can happen to every carpet construction be it Axminster, Wilton, Tufted, Hand Woven, Persian, Chinese, Indian or even Coir Matting. Like shading it can be more apparent on plain carpet because heavy patterns can disguise the effects. It can occur quite quickly after installation. A tremendous amount of research has been carried out over many years by many institutes to determine the cause of this phenomenon but none of it has proved conclusive. There is no commonly known manufacturing process which can cause or cure this phenomenon and therefore it is not a manufacturing fault. For further information please check with individual manufacturers recommendations.
INDENTATIONS
When a carpet is subjected to a heavy point load, such as under the legs of furniture, it is unreasonable to expect the carpet not to indent. Usually, the longer the load is in place, the longer will be the time for the pile to recover. In the case of very heavy loads in place for a considerable time, the recovery time can be very considerable. It must be remembered that it is not only the pile of the carpet that becomes indented. the underlay will also indent and the backing of the carpet may also distort into the indentation in the underlay. Some underlay’s will recover well and some less well depending upon their composition, thickness, density etc. The use of cups below furniture legs can spread the load and the net result is a larger area of less deeply indented carpet.
The ability of a carpet to recover from a heavy static load can be measured in the laboratory, using the test method described in BS 4939 and many manufacturers will have data on this aspect of carpet performance. In this test the carpet is loaded for 24 hours and the degree of recovery is measured after 1 hour and 24 hours. Since there are so many different underlay’s however, it is very rare for the recovery from a heavy static load to be evaluated on carpet and underlay. Often normal maintenance (vacuum cleaning with a rotating brush machine) will speed up recovery but in the case of serious indentations the use of an iron and damp cloth or a steam iron together with a blunt darning needle to carefully tease up the pile can be beneficial. Care must be take not to over wet the carpet, of course.
FLATTENING
Flattening will occur as a result of traffic which eventually flattens the pile particularly in the main areas of use. All pile fabrics will flatten to greater or lesser degree dependant on the amount of traffic to which it is subjected and the construction (tuft density/pile fibre/height/weight) of the product concerned.
SOILING
Soiling is usually the result of some local condition to which the carpet has been subjected to, or maintenance, or lack of maintenance programme. There is nothing we as manufacturers can do to prevent soiling in use. There are several types of soiling which are quite common:
Spillages
- Liquids such as soft drinks, cordials or any drink which contains sugar, particularly hot drinks, is likely to leave a stain. In such instances, professional help should be sought.
Shampoo - if incorrectly applied, can leave
sticky soap residues in the fibres which can result in the soiling reappearing quite rapidly.
Dust - which is carried on draughts can soil
carpets in various ways, apart from the obvious soiled edges, at gaping skirting boards for instance, dark lines appearing on surface might suggest airborne dust vacuumdrawn through poorly fitted floorboards. Sometimes the shape of floorboards can be seen quite clearly. Air borne dust sometimes shows itself as spots on the carpet, this is due to the air carried on a draught under the carpet escaping through minute holes both in the underlay and the carpet, leaving dust deposited on the pile much like a filter action. In such installations, the use of a lining paper is essential as a preventative measure.
T HE R EGENCY
Collection
It is the responsibility of the retailer to advise the consumer when the carpet is measured of any poorly fitting doors, skirtings, or floorboards and the consumers responsibility to ensure any remedial work to seal draughts, is carried out before the carpet is fitted, if a resulting complaint is to be avoided.
INSTALLATIONS
We recommend that all carpets are laid in accordance with BS5325:2001 (a copy of which can be obtained from your library or HMSO) or as per National Institute of Carpet Fitters installation manual (Tel 0115 958 3077) for further information.
This information is given by responsible manufacturers to help you help your customer to make an informed choice.

Flooring factsheet Carpet types TUFTED
With advances in manufacturing technology, 95% of all carpet produced today is tufted. It takes about an hour to make a roll of carpet that might take eight hours to weave. To make tufted carpet, hundreds of yarn-threaded needles are pushed through the primary backing fabric to form loops or tufts, which may be left as is or cut. A heavy adhesive coating is applied to hold the tufts in place and a secondary backing is usually glued on for strength and stability. A wide variety of styles and textures can then be created using various techniques.
LOOP PILE Berber • Berber carpets look like and are named after a handmade, bulky wool carpet made by the Berber tribes of North Africa and Asia. The loops are made from thick or bulky yarns of wool, nylon, polypropylene or a blend of these fibres to give a cushioned effect underfoot. These carpets are available in an assortment of colours and may be flecked and can be either level loop or multilevel loop.
Level Loop • When all the loops are of the same height, a highly flexible and durable carpet is created which has a natural, casual appearance even when (commonly) it is made from synthetic fibres. The tight loop texture tends to hide marks so it’s a good blend between luxury and practicality.
Multi-level loop • The loops vary to two or sometimes three loop heights to create informal, random textures which are very forgiving for marks and stains and therefore very suitable for high traffic areas and busy family rooms.
CUT PILE Freize • Frieze (pronounced free-say) carpets are similar to saxony, but the yarns are more tightly twisted and should always be heat set. They have a dense, low pile surface which creates a coarse, pebbly texture. Frieze carpets are very durable and hide footprints, dust and dirt, which makes them suitable for heavy traffic areas.
Saxony • Saxony textures are made of twisted yarns, which should be heat set.The tips remain very distinct, rather than blending together to form a very elegant finish. Saxony textures show footprints and vacuum marks so are suitable for more occasional rooms in the home. More textured variations improve the practicality of saxonies.
WOVEN
Woven carpet may be in a tiny minority of today’s production but still produces some of the finest carpets which are used for prestigious installations.
Axminster • The pile of the carpet is inserted into the backing as it is woven and cut to length, creating U-shaped tufts to give a velvety surface. The process locks in the fibre to create a carpet of high durability and performance retention as well as a luxury feel. The process allows for intricate designs and colours to be used – although modern trends mean that the traditional patterned axminster has given way to current fashion trends for plain carpets.
Wilton • Wilton woven carpets are produced in a similar way to axminsters – the principal difference being that a continuous fibre is woven all the way through. The carpet can be sheared to create a range of cut and loop textured effects. The result is a high quality carpet of unrivalled durability.
Flat weave • Manufactured in the same way as wilton, flat weave is a loop pile which allows the yarn to be woven across a wider area to created a flatter, more textured effect.
ends blend together which then further enhances the overall finish. These carpets tend to ‘shade’ with heavy use. Footprints show easily and the colour looks different from place to place because fibres lying in different directions reflect the light differently. A luxury for occasional rooms.
CUT AND LOOP When some of the pile is cut and other left as loop, a variety of surface textures and patterns can be created (in a variety of colours). The multi-level surface is excellent for hiding footprints and stains so cut and loop is good for high traffic areas and general purpose rooms in the home. Shag pile ¥ Shag pile has varied in popularity. The pile is up to 50mm long and the texture is casual and loose but the surface flattens easily and lacks durability.
Twist • The popular twist carpet is the cut-pile standard. The yarn is tightly twisted and often heatset to retain this feature and the result is BONDED Tip Sheared Level Loop Tip Sheared Level Loop Sheared Level Loop a versatile, textured finish that is idealTipfor plain colours. Bonded carpets (sometimes called ‘fibre-bonded’ or ‘fusion bonded’) are created by firing fibres into an adhesive material – the fibres are Velve t • Velvet textures (sometimes called ‘velour’ or ‘plush’) all have not stitched into the backing in any way. The technique is principally a level surface pile of approx 5mm to 10mm height, which is then used for commercial carpet tiles. sheared to give a smooth finish. Flooring factsheet Underlay In a tight market for margins, underlay for carpet and laminate flooring offers retailers one of the best opportunities to add value to every sale - with good profitability, trade-up potential once benefits are understood and high satisfaction levels with customers.
www.interfloor.com
But 50% of carpet is still sold without new underlay! Retailers should create an assumption that new underlay is always required, the only decision is which type. It’s also a good target-setter for sales staff.
www.interfloor.com
Setting up in-store demonstrations so customers can walk on samples with different grades of underlay and feel the difference has shown excellent results - some manufacturers offer point-of-sale units.
Benefits
Good underlay will... • Improve underfoot comfort • Increase appearance retention, reducing flattening • Absorb the pressure of foot traffic and reduce wear • Improve thermal insulation and warmth • Increase sound insulation • Smooth out sub-floor imperfections • Last the lifetime of the carpet Poor or old underlay will... • Feel hard and unwelcoming • Reduce carpet life • Cause wrinkling and premature wear spots • Cause carpet fibres to break down more quickly • Not meet British Standards
How thick? A maximum of 12mm is recommended (working with gripper will be difficult thereafter) but rooms with heavy traffic will need a thinner, denser pad.The combination of thickness and density is all important as a thick underlay with low density may not perform well. Typically, the thicker the underlay, the better quality it will need to be - 11mm is often used for luxury installations with 9mm and 7mm the common domestic thickness.
Sponge rubber
Combination
Crumb
PU foam
Types Sponge rubber The market’s most popular underlay is available in flat or waffle patterns in a wide range of weights for different applications. It performs well for comfort and has a durable spring retention. PU (polyurethane) foam PU foam is a relative newcomer to the market, typically made from recycled foam offcuts. The foam provides excellent comfort and performance levels with lots of thickness options - and its light weight helps handling. The product can be re-cycled again after use. Crumb rubber Flat and dense, crumb rubber is good for heavy footfall - offering maximum protection but a little less comfort (and very good over stair nosings). Laminate underlay There’s still an opportunity to sell underlay with laminate flooring, improving the acoustic performance of the floor and helping the boards float above any imperfections in the sub-surface. Combination A rubber crumb base with a felt top layer offers a good combination of protection, durability and comfort. It also allows carpet with seaming to bed into the top felt. Underfloor heating underlay Always ask if there is underfloor heating. Most manufacturers offer specialised products. Underlay and carpet with a combined tog rating up to 2.5 can be used - which means the underlay would normally have a tog rating of 1.0. Felt This traditional (but environmentally friendly) underlay is made from recycled fibres - wool, jute and synthetic - to create a firm, dense pad with excellent thermal insulation. Still a very popular choice among contractors when stretch fitting woven carpets Pre-tackified underlay A self-adhesive single stick underlay in both needlefelt and PU. A removable system for heavy use when comfort is desired

FlooringNews Celtic castle inspires Irish plaid A traditional Irish plaid with an original rustic feel, Abbeyglen from Brintons takes its name from one of Ireland’s most magnificent castles located on the romantic Celtic west coast. Warm and welcoming, these five sumptuous plaids celebrate distinctive Irish tartan design, with each of the individual patterns staying true to the named counties of; Cavan, Fermanagh, Leitrim,Tyrone and Wexford. Each plaid features colours that naturally endow the collection with a rich organic quality.
Abbeyglen plaids are woven to produce a unique ground that simulates a handcrafted texture, creating a sumptuous and luxurious appearance. Created in colours which reflect the delicate shades of Ireland’s soft vegetable colours of old.
The plaids work wonderfully on their own or running alongside complementary plain colours creating a luxurious and harmonious living space.
Abbeyglen is a woven axminster, 80% wool and 20% nylon, available in both 4.00m and 1.00m widths. T 01562 748000

Display that dazzles Karastan of the Mohawk Group is providing retailers the opportunity to dazzle customers on the shop floor thanks to a new display stand designed to showcase the full potential of the Karastan range of high-end residential floorcoverings. With stunning patterns, rich colours and undeniable quality, Karastan carpets make a natural stopping point for any consumer and with the display stand holding 13.5” x 18” samples, they can really see and feel the beauty of this range.
With a small footprint at just 85cm x 85cm, the display takes up little space in store, yet reinforces the high-end nature of the collection of woven and tufted carpets.
“Albeit an exclusive collection, Karastan will appeal to everyone’s sense of style and quality and so can provide a great talking point to strike up customer interaction at the very least and for those consumers with the budget, it makes a natural choice,” comments Howard Lindsay,The Mohawk Group. “Featuring strong lifestyle photography and branding, the luxury of the product becomes obvious, but we also wanted to make sure that the Karastan unit could also be flexible within store, allowing retailers to change their floor space at will and promoting the benefits of good in-store design. Hence, the Karastan display stand is easy to move, giving retailers exactly this.”
The Karastan display unit is available to retailers under a rebate scheme which ensures that successful Karastan stockists will not only benefit from an excellent range of carpets, but also a comprehensive sales support package, which is only partially represented by the stand. OF THE TRADE
Geert Vanden Bossche
Age: 47 Job Title: Marketing Director Balta Years with present company: 25 Years in flooring industry: 25 Main non-work interests: football & movies
How would you describe current markets conditions now, compared to a year ago?
When do you expect an upturn in the economy generally?
“
We believe 2009 still to be a difficult year with hopefully a start of improvement by the end of this year. We need to change peoples minds and create a feeling of optimism again, as this crisis is also a psychological one.
What's the key market issue/challenge today?
We need to be very flexible and adapt to ever changing market conditions. Flexible in our production to cope with high fluctuations in demand ensuring the best possible service.
What’s the single most important key to success in flooring?
That's an easy one: product, product and again product! In these difficult times we are stepping up our efforts in product development. This allows us to bring products to the market with the best quality/price ratio to suit current demand. We are now taking market share to be in the best possible position when the economy picks up again.
Who has been your biggest influence in business? I have the pleasure of working with our UK sales director Duncan Buchanan for many, many years now The drive he still has, even at his age, is an example for many and motivates me and my colleagues to give back the best we have in us. I think he will continue for ever.
“It’s not all doom and gloom. It’s an exciting business”
32
February 2009
If you could ask retailers to change one thing, what would it be?
To communicate more the many benefits of broadloom carpet in the stores. Use the tools that we offer or the inspiration and support that the Fun on the Floor campaign provides.
What has changed most in the last 5-10 years?
“
It won't be a surprise that current market conditions are very difficult for all Belgian carpet mills and other. The UK market is our largest export market and consumption is down. We are witnessing a survival of the fittest. I'm confident there are opportunities for a company like Balta in these difficult times.
Communication probably. Years ago when you left on a business trip you disappeared for a couple of days with in best case a fax number of the hotel where you were planning to stay. Now, with our Blackberry, you are expected to be online 24 hours a day. It is very practical, no doubt, but it never stops!
What was your first job in flooring?
I started working for Balta in '84. I have worked in product development for many years. I was trained by experienced people and it was a very good school which allowed me to understand everything there is to know about carpets. The last 10 years I've been in charge of marketing for both Balta Broadloom and the Balta Group.
Would you advise a member of your family to come into the flooring industry?
I definitely would. It is not all doom and gloom. It's an exciting business, which allowed me to see the world and develop myself. The nicest thing is that when you are in the business as long as I have been, anywhere you go, you meet a lot of people you know. Some of them are real characters though!
What's the oddest thing that's ever happened to you in the trade?
Probably a night out in Blackpool with some of our UK reps. Impossible to go into more detail I'm afraid!

The four new designs are: Cobble, as the name suggests this design recreates the effect of a traditional cobbled floor with flecks of colour for added definition, Bedrock, a distinctive design in a chunky loop encompassing character whilst maintaining wool softness underfoot, Wadi, a subtle palette of earthy hues in a contemporary take on a traditional rib, Sahara, a simple yet sophisticated fine loop in a palette of greys and browns that will look comfortable anywhere in the home.
All the colours have been carefully selected to emulate the natural tones of the earth, fully complementing the textures and colours of the current Desert Spice collection.

Ultimo’s axminster Indulgence Lano Carpets’ luxury brand, Ultimo, is changing the face of axminster carpeting for the home with the introduction of Pure Indulgence.
Pure Indulgence captures the luxury of axminster carpets, but adds a sense of modern individuality, bringing traditional carpet weaving techniques and harmonising it with contemporary pointers such as monochrome colourways and striated designs.
Beautifully woven from a blend of 80% wool and 20% nylon, the woolrich Pure Indulgence brings quality to the home, thanks to its eight-row construction that brings durability. Lano Carpets has also utilised a threeply yarn that gives Pure Indulgence pinpoint pattern reproduction and excellent appearance retention.
Launched at Harrogate, the range is now available in cut-lengths and Lano Carpets is currently developing a stylish lectern to display all samples individually. Retailers can also incorporate selected samples from the range onto the Ultimo display stand, underlining the premium nature of Pure Indulgence.
Available in a four-metre width, Pure Indulgence offers a total of 17 options available for immediate delivery from stock. Amongst these are a houndstooth design and delicate floral in five colours, as well as a stripe design in four colours.
“With luxury high end carpeting, quality is paramount and so we have given Pure Indulgence the necessary attributes to mark it out as a carpet of distinction and the result is a carpet with a razor sharp look,” comments Sebastien Lewyllie, Business Development Manager UK & Ireland. colourscape 2010 Wools of New Zealand 2010 Colour Forecast
Earth, wind and fibre
Nature is at the very centre of colour forecasts for 2010 – seeing an extension of trends already established over the past couple of years. Wools of New Zealand are a leading international authority on colour and their Colour Forecast is eagerly anticipated by the flooring industry to help guide design decisions in the year ahead.
The organisation’s colour expert Joanna Ramsden noted that the economic downturn meant movement in colour development was more restrained but the naturals trend was proving to be highly commercial for manufacturers.
“Nature continues to dominate the palette in our Colour Forecast, underlining trends already signalled for 2009” she says. “A host of new shades associated with the earth’s natural habitats has extended the palette of hues.” Wools of New Zealand have produced a ‘Colourscape’ for 2010 with 89 organic colours.
The influence of cool greys remains strong and complements the new warm soft neutrals, the ecological greens and rich, dark tones. The introduction of 10 bright accents, including black and white, offers designers a wealth of interesting colour combinations for new carpet and rug ranges to co-ordinate with the very latest interior décor trends.
The Palette
‘Barely there’ pastels, frozen naturals and powdered minerals morph into meteorological-inspired tones of stormy greys, teals and midnight blues. Fresh vegetable greens blend into herbal shades of olive. Old and mellowed golds diffuse into warm aromatic spice tones of cinnamon, saffron and burnt orange. Nostalgic and romantic hues of faded rose and mulberry are interspersed with rich shades of wild berries, plums and violet. Sumptuous tones of coffee, caramel, cocoa and melted chocolate blend with soft warm naturals. Vibrant and energising bright accents, to be used in a controlled manner, add a touch of zest and bring the palette to life.
Black and white are introduced to enhance fashion opportunities.
Inspiration
Wools of New Zealand have worked with the Scottish ultra-natural landscape artist James Wheeler to demonstrate the synergy with nature and his mellow works are used around the presentation of the Colourscape palette.
James knows a thing or two about carpet having left art college for the design department of Firth Carpets where he carved out a highly successful career to become one of the industry’s leading designers.

News Kiwi’s kick off with V&A Ryalux has provided a stunning red carpet from its V&A Twist collection to Tourism New Zealand for its Giant Rugby Ball event in London's Potters Fields Park. Ryalux takes real pride in the fact that its V&A Twist carpets are made from 80 per cent pure New Zealand wool, and so it was ideally suited to this prestigious affair. The event marks the culmination of Tourism New Zealand's latest campaign to encourage visitors to New Zealand by giving them a taste of the country's spectacular sights and sounds, and will kick off the festivities ahead of the 2011 Rugby World Cup. Ryalux supplied 15m x 2m of its beautiful V&A Twist carpet in Cinnabar, to create a dramatic entrance for the special guests that attended on the night, which included the Prime Minister of New Zealand, John Key.
The event itself was held inside a giant rugby ball - an eye-catching concept designed to raise New Zealand's tourism profile. It was unveiled in Paris during the final stages of the 2007 Rugby World Cup, where over 25,000 visitors passed through it at its temporary site at the foot of the Eiffel Tower. Now that the giant rugby ball has completed its Channel crossing, the 25m x 17m x 12m structure is installed next to London's Tower Bridge.
Claire Huby, head of marketing at Ryalux, explains why Ryalux was keen to get involved with the event by supplying carpet from one of its best selling ranges: "Ryalux carpets are handcrafted using the finest New Zealand wool, which is the best in the world for achieving clarity of colour; something that was crucial to us in the development of the V&A Twist collection. Wool is an amazing material and produces carpet of an extremely high quality, which is not only hardwearing, but soft and luxurious underfoot - all adding to the impact of the V&A Twist in situ. It was a pleasure to offer the red carpet for the occasion, bringing that extra bit of glamour to an already exciting evening." T 0845 6528811

Can without tan! Osmo UK, the eco-friendly wood and finishes expert, has developed an SPF12 protection oil for exterior wood (sun protection factor)! The company says its brand new UVProtection-Oil offers 12 times the UV protection in comparison to untreated wood.
Designed to protect, maintain and restore all types of wood from the effects of the environment, UV-Protection-Oil ensures a professional finish that will enhance and protect all types of wood for many years to come.
“We are all familiar with the damaging effect that the weather can have on wood,” says Steve Grimwood, MD of Osmo UK. “Whether it is wood cracking and peeling or fading to grey as a result of the harmful effect of the sun, wooden doors and windows constantly seem to require freshening-up - it is an ongoing problem. We’ve developed UV-ProtectionOil to address this issue, and we’ve done this by integrating clear UV protection into an oilbased pigment-free finish which ensures the natural appearance of the wood is maintained. It really does limit the greying process!”
Osmo UV Protection Oil is a satin-matt, clear finish designed for interior and exterior application. As well as protecting the wood surface it can also enhance the natural look of the wood. Based on natural oil, it does not crack, flake, peel or blister. It is moisture regulating and reduces swelling and shrinking of the wood. This product is particularly suitable for oak windows, residential and commercial doors and overcomes the need for a heavy stain or a flaking varnish to keep them looking natural. 38

DOMOTEX 2009
floorforum - the designer showcase at Domotex - took the theme of textures
FLOORING’S FASHION SHOW
An upbeat downturn at Domotex “This is our catwalk,” says Darren Clanford of Ryalux describing the crowded aisles at Domotex last month. Carpet as fashion is making a comeback and the brighter colours of the Hannover event lightened the economic gloom.
But prowling the catwalk were some tigers and some tabbies – a stark difference between the flooring companies that are going all out to gain market share and those firms who are hunkering down and waiting for the recession to end – in the hope that it does and they don’t.
The Hannover show is the European floorcovering industry’s biggest event and attracted a record number of 1,394 exhibitors though many had no doubt booked before the worst was known. Organisers admitted visitor numbers were down for the first time in years but the turnstiles still counted 38,000 attendees. The European flooring industry is always reassuringly innovative and enthusiastic and this year was no exception - but optimism was a more rare commodity. It was only January, but the consensus can’t wait for the year to be over. from The Stocklists
by David Spragg The UK viewed from Europe is an unhappy island with lower demand and an adverse exchange rate for importers. A couple of European-based reps were shocked by the unremittingly gloomy press reports they endured when they had visited the UK in recent months. ‘No wonder no-one in Britain wants to buy anything’, said one.
“Trading conditions are miserable and anyone who tells you they are doing OK is being less than honest,” said the head of one of the leading importers into the UK. Rumours were rife that some major buying groups were not visiting the event due to corporate restrictions on travel – the Argos interiors team was allegedly one victim of this new curse.
But the tigers are taking up the challenge and it was remarkable how many Domotex exhibitors launched record numbers of new ranges at the show. Balta, for example showed 93 ranges of which 60% were new or recoloured. “We are positive and not interested in pessimism,” said Geert Vanden Bossche. “Now is the time to take market share.” continued overleaf...

DOMOTEX DOMOTEX DOMOT DOM DO 2 The renaissance of Ryalux and Burmatex is a joy to behold and designer Darren Clanford relishes the challenge of exceeding the high expectations that the industry now has of this creative company. “We like to have fun and we love the way people enjoy and appreciate our designs”’ says Darren. “We’ve got to get carpet off the commodity list to become a more thoughtful purchase”.The company’s spectacular stand took the theme of ‘accessible sophistication’ and explored layers of soft-on-soft carpet textures in muted primary colours. The judges were impressed. The company received an award for ‘best colouration’ at the show.
Tisca Tiara seeks to benefit from the resilience of the quality end of the market and the UK’s unshakeable trust in wool. “Top end wool is selling strongly – people find comfort in the timeless elegance and unrivalled quality,” say Alan Jones-Bratt (pictured below), their man in the UK.The company’s Merino Super is a consistent good seller and the superb wiltons Pave, Sienna, Classic and Caprice do well. Pictured is a newcomer Forum, a very commercial 100% wool woven wilton with a bespoke feel.
Asiatic’s appearance in Hannover was a triumph of texture and colour with the debut of 60 new designs in their Modern Acrylics range which will be seen in the UK with the launch of their Spring Collection. Multi-textures approaches included innovations in superb designs with faux-suede (pictured in the new Laya range) while geometrics and bright florals are likely to continue to sell strongly in the new designs – including the updated items in the popular Harlequin range.

DOMOTEX 2009 OTEX MOTEX 2009 X OMOTEX 2009 2009 2009 2009 “You cannot stand still, says Alan Russell of Louis de Poortere. “We’re trying harder and taking more risks with ideas and colour to attract customers.” Edel Telenzo said they were “investing in the downturn” and brought 33 new ranges to the show.
Balterio’s Franky Terrijn said: “There’s only one option. You have to face forward and we are very confident…” before adding… “in 2010.” There are rays of hope. There was general agreement that higher end consumers still had money and were spending it. Also that the recession was forcing homeowners to stay put and they were therefore more inclined to invest more in their homes.
And an interesting theme to emerge in these hard pressed times was the importance on investing in service to help retailers achieve more – including new emphasis on cut length supply to improve retailers cashflow.
British Wool was flying the flag and reporting healthy levels of interest from European and American visitors. The stand was showcasing Shades of Nature – a presentation designed to bring the environmental benefits of 100% natural tufted carpet yarns to the widest possible audience. The collection features nine breed types and three blended yarns. “We know the eco agenda is gaining pace and our presentation is about enabling people to understand the potential of using a particular breed or type of wool in their products,” said British Wool’s Richard Poole.
Jeremy Nichols at Asiatic brought 60 new rug designs to the show and said: “Now it’s all about service and support and keeping the product range fresh.” UK-based Asiatic and Ryalux are exceptional amongst a very small band of UK participants in the event – despite the export opportunities that the weaker pound should create.
Ivan Dekeyser, International Sales Director at Burmatex, commented at the end of last year that the UK was too cautious and inwardlooking. “Exporting isn’t easy but there are great opportunities for British firms,” he said. But only a handful made it across the channel – just 30 exhibitors led amongst an international total of 1,394. All reported good business with strong enquiries from Poland and Hungary plus Australian and US visitors. continued overleaf...
IVC stepped out with Stepper at Domotex, the company’s first non-cushion vinyl range (pictured) which is an easy fit, self-adhesive plank launched in 20 styles. The product goes head-tohead with laminate and with an impressive range of advantages. The UK will be seeing a new range of slipresist (SR) vinyls later this month with Stones SR, Woods SR and Luxury Touch SR. IVC says vinyl sales are out-performing the market and brought more new products to this years show than last to underline their confidence.

DOMOTEX DOMOTEX DOMOT DOM DO 2 Balta’s positive approach to the market takes some beating and with some 60 new ranges at the show they had plenty to talk about. The company’s highly successful Woolmaster collection has added seven new loop pile and cut pile ranges – together with a new tombola to show them to best effect. A top product is the new tip-sheared Bergerac rib which is ideal for UK consumers. Balta are offering a cut length service with a one–week turnaround to “offer maximum choice”. Balta’s Stainsafe range launched just 18 months ago is performing well and has added sexy new shaggies Rasta and Curly.
The 33 new ranges that Edel Telenzo brought to Hannover underlined the company’s claim to be “investing in the downturn”. A star performer is the stripey Tube collection and a stylish designer monochrome Xpress range has been added to Piccadilly, Mainline and Jubilee to further enhance the success of this highly attractive low-level loop. In the popular London collection, the popular textured Greenwich 50/50 quality has been recoloured and ribbed Windsor replaces Richmond with five new muted, stoney shades.
It’s going to be an interesting year for Interfloor with the launch of the new combined catalogue that represents the integration of the Stikatak business, acquired by the company almost a year ago. “We been working hard on the product range and the combined catalogue fills every gap,” says Paul Marsh. While underlay is still a core business, there will be more focus on accessories and Interfloor have introduced a new selection of nosings and metals, extended the gripper range and re-launched its adhesives.

DOMOTEX 2009 OTEX MOTEX 2009 X OMOTEX 2009 2009 2009 2009 STYLES AND TRENDS
Although the economics were unavoidable, fashion was also to the fore at Domotex with a real buzz of colour, texture and design innovation.
While beige isn’t exactly on the back burner, manufacturers report a distinct move towards colour and much of the running here is being made by a new trend towards muted shades. Consumers appear to find faded colours less threatening and more acceptable and limey greens, oranges, purples and soft rich reds are doing well in this spectrum.
The perceived wisdom, increasingly repeated by sales people is that consumers are anticipating staying longer in their homes and are moving towards expressing their personality in colour – rather than the bland beige backdrops that estate agents favour.
“There is a stronger sense of ownership in people’s homes and I think they are going to be braver in the colours and textures they choose to live with”, said Darren Clanford of Ryalux. Wools of New Zealand designer Joanna Ramsden said: “The economic climate means there hasn’t been much movement in colour trends but there is still interest in colour among consumers. Retailers are being a little more creative and there’s a need for them to create uplifting displays that respond to that trend.”
Joanna is one of the industry’s most colour-conscious players and reported that a wider range of greens was making it to market, including a return to sage, and there was increasing tonality in the choice of greys and graphites.
Lano’s show-stopper in Hannover for UK buyers was Pure Indulgence (pictured), a luxury 8-row 80/20 axminster that has just been launched as part of the company’s highly attractive Ultimo collection, pictured above with Bernard Coorevits. The ranges 17 options include stripes, a dog-tooth design, plaids and patterns and extends Lano’s ambitious move into axminsters. Ultimo velvets continue to perform strongly and a superb heavier weight Wool Touch range in 12 colours has been added alongside Mayfair.
The organisation’s colour forecast is reported in depth on page 35 of this magazine.
Emerging from the strong run that black has had in recent years, subtler shades of grey are doing well and many manufacturers cited silver as an increasingly popular – and practical – choice.
Jeremy Nichols of the UK’s Asiatic rug business showed The Stocklists around his ‘extreme shaggies’ where almost anything goes – and everything sells – from shiny metallics and lurex to big, big multi-height piles.
Textures is almost the new colour. Manufacturers have been busy forcing fibre and yarn combinations into ever more interesting and complex arrangements. Multi-height and mixed construction products are working well in a market where consumers appear more confident to experiment with texture maybe than colour.
Light and shadow effects are being given more attention, both in term of the structure of carpets and the mix of matt and glossy fibres. continued overleaf...

DOMOTEX DOMOTEX DOMOT DOM DO 2 The theme was taken in the floorforum – the annual Domotex showcase of design which is worth the trip to Hannover alone. The flooring industry’s top designer, Amsterdam-based Ulf Moritz, had charge again and expressed texture in a forest display of carpet hung vertically between rough-cut timber.
Away from textiles, vinyl, wood and laminate manufacturers report a move away from the mid-tones for wood-effect designs with increasingly attractive options in bleached and white effects and less heavy darker tones. In the UK, it’s still any colour so long as it’s oak – but the conventional colours are less strong even in this most conservative market.
Once you have emulated wood to a degree of precision that its difficult to comprehend, you wonder where else the laminates and vinyls have to go – but they do and the constant level of innovation is always impressive in this sector. Balerio’s latest 24cm wide laminate plank is a fine example. Yarn innovation is central to the campaign by Wools of New Zealand to inspire the industry to develop new and appealing products, often in unusual ways. Working with six spinners in Europe, New Zealand and Japan, a range of wool yarn blends with acrylics, bamboo, metallics and other fibres are woven into new designs. One of the most striking was the Coco Chanel themes, pictured with Joanna Ramsden. “Carpet should be more fashionable and we aim to give some direction to colour and pattern,” says Joanna.
With vinyl, designs are getting more adventurous around the edges of the top ceramic and wood-effect sellers but the obsession with slip resistence has led to more heavy use of matt finishes with the result that even some of the more exciting effects look a little dull.
Domotex 2010 has already been posted for January 1619 and for most of us next year can’t come soon enough – we just hope as many people can still afford to make the trip!

Vorwerk’s Ian Hammond says: “The time is right for quality synthetic carpet and we want to muscle in a little on the higher-end wool market”. The company is setting out to be more fashionable and plans a proactive PR campaign. At Domotex they demonstrated some excellent new ideas including the launch of quality nylon Evolution and the soft cotton feel of synthetic Braga. A mini-shaggy Mahdia is set to do well and Colito, a precise loop, and the thick twist of Lenta add to an impressive range of quality.
DOMOTEX 2009 OTEX MOTEX 2009 X OMOTEX 2009 2009 2009 2009
Associated Weavers attracted a lot of attention for their new printed wool carpets in the Designer Wool Collection - “an axminster-type product at a fraction of the price” says AW’s Jonathan Davies, pictured left with Diane Martin of The Stocklists. The 80/20 collection with British Wool offers three ranges – Tranquil, a subtle scroll (pictured); Grace, a two-colour floral; and Marble, a classic swirling axminster design. Away from the wool, the new Tuftex Twist made of lustrous Turkish polypropylene looks likely to be a big seller in a bright range of strong colours.
Louis De Poortere has gone ultra-green with EcoDream – a major step forward in environmentally friendly carpet. The product is exclusively composed on natural elements – mainly non-dyed yarn and with a backing that is free from chemicals. Eco-Dream Comfort is a soft residential quality – “it is a great product with strong emotional value and we’re expecting great interest,” says LDP’s Alan Russell. A colourful sideshow at Domotex was Decomatic – a new ribbed chenille antislip rug (pictured) with a stylish swatch-on-roll.
DOMOTEX 2009 Balterio was very busy with a major product launch centre-stage in the shape of Grandeur, a 204cm long laminate board which is uniquely wide at 24 cm.The extra width is immediately impressive and as close as possible to top quality wood floors. The 9mm boards are initially available in five Oak colours and each has deep registered embossing. The slightly shiny chromezone technology that has been such a success since the magnitude range was launched last year has also been applied to Grandeur to great effect.
In the ever-changing rugs sector, Brink & Campman can be relied upon to innovate and inspire with top quality collections and Domotex was proving to be a successful showcase for the company. A pride of place was given to the stunning Himali Splendid quality, a hand-knotted rug of 100% Tibetan wool which is now stocked in a 1 x 3 metre runner size as well as a selection of rug shapes. ‘A quality design like this in the hall and coordinating with a rug in the lounge looks very sophisticated”’ says B&C’s Jasper Kempers (above).
“PU is unstoppable” says Carpenter’s Bob Lawton. He knows a thing or two about such things having taking the business to a substantial share of the market after only two year’s trading from their UK factory and he says the momentum is growing as rubber is increasingly replaced. A new launch at the show was Marine Step – a luxury grade PU underlay for ultimate residential comfort and hospitality installations include cruise ships and hotels.
Britain’s brave boys hit the floor for the NICF in the European Floorlaying competition – a highly demanding 3-day event involving seven international teams that has become a popular feature at the Hannover show.Tasks cover carpet, vinyl and laminate laying.Team GB is sponsored by The Stocklists and comprises Matt Blackbourn, Scott Carter-Dowding, Mark Saunders and ‘juror’ Steve Ramsden. They were placed first by a number of judges in individual categories but the Italians took the main trophy.
The British Wool column British Wool at Domotex The British Wool team was at Domotex 2009 to help promote British Wool and support the wider British textile industry.
The BWMB stand operated as a business centre and offered meeting facilities to British Wool partners including wool merchants and spinners and members of the manufacturing licensee scheme. Richard Poole, European Business Manager at the BWMB has co-ordinated the British Wool activity at Domotex for the last three years and works closely with the carpet industry across Europe and the wider markets. “This show is the first major flooring event to come after the collapse of the global market and therefore it was seen as a test of the current state of the industry.”
Whilst acknowledging that footfall was down, he felt that there was still significant footfall and it was clear that business from major buyers was taking place. “The European manufacturers are feeling the effect of the Euro being so high as many do significant business in the UK. A number of bigger companies are better placed to ride the storm and while some had definitely consolidated – others had pushed the product development aspect to expand their ranges.”
The Castlemead Velvet Stripe Collection from Adam Carpets
The British Wool stand itself was continuously busy and was well used by the UK contingency. The meeting tables were in constant use and the general feeling was that it provided a very useful platform for broaching international business opportunities. “We felt that it offered a perfect solution for those people who come to do business but do not have the need for a full stand on their own account.” Said Greg Bedford of Calder Carpets.
Why British sheep breeds make a difference to carpet
Designer Hilary Terry of Adam carpets has created a new range of striped carpets, which will bring the growing passion for stripes to the showroom with real style.
Castlemead Velvet Stripe in British Wool offers four distinctive colour options, each one co-ordinating with four colours from the well-established Castlemead Twist range of plain carpets.
The clever colour and narrow/wide stripe combinations bring together black with grey and muted browns in one design and black with muted darker and lighter beiges in another. Introducing red with black and brown shades in to the theme these three designs offer a very stylish and cosmopolitan colour scheme, which would be suited to a number of different looks. Finally, the more subtle cream, fawn and turquoise stripe is bound to be a winner with the consumer that wants natural shades but something a little different. "This design impact range has been very well received by buyers and retailers and is in tune with current trends for stripes in the home particularly when used with co-ordinate plain carpet ranges." Said Tony Hardwick, Sales Director of Adam Carpets Ltd. An 80% wool 20% nylon range in 2-ply yarn, it is made on 1/8th gauge and is available in 4-metre width. Castlemead Velvet Stripe Collection is available from February.

Colour beckons and ‘green’ grows
Colour it seems was really on the cards at Domotex 2009. Manufacturers were promoting rich plums and dark berry shades and whilst these have often been token gestures to make the ranges look more interesting, manufacturers said that key buyers are asking for these shades now.
Pattern and particularly stripes is also more evident in carpet with some manufacturers offering printed pattern on wool carpet. Dramatic pattern on rugs was also everywhere and in plain ranges there were some truly fantastic undulating tufted rugs using different lengths of yarn to create a robust wave effect. Green issues and recycling of finished product is now very definitely on the manufacturer’s agenda – with major US manufacturers like Mohawk blazing an eco-trail for the synthetic market. However, wool as a sustainable product with a natural lineage has many eco-advantages continues to need more defined eco-promotion by manufacturers.

Flower on Flooring News Secrets of the boudoir
While consumers recognise the need for hardwearing flooring in areas such as hallways and living rooms, they are more inclined to go for comfort in their bedrooms.
Carpet continues to be the most popular choice of flooring for the bedroom, typically deep pile options that create a feeling of warmth and luxury.
Sarah Ludlam, head of design at Ryalux, said: 'Homeowners are deciding to invest in the home they live in, rather than move elsewhere. From a flooring point of view, this means that the trend for fitting out a home in neutral colours to appeal to potential buyers is stepping aside and instead, flooring that better reflects the personality of the occupants is at the top of the carpet agenda. In the private sanctuary of the bedroom, naturals and beiges are being replaced by bolder, more exciting colour choices, creating individual and uplifting interiors.
Cormar Carpets’ Heavenly Collection
'Wool carpets in particular are ideal for bedrooms, as they are soft, warm, inherently anti-static and flame retardant. What’s more, in this era of eco-sensitivity, wool has the added appeal of being a natural and fully renewable resource.' Bernard Coorevits, marketing manager for Lano Carpets, also said comfort was the main factor: 'With much time spent in socks or bare feet, texture is crucial and our Corona brings the unmistakable pile of a Saxony texture, giving a sumptuous feel underfoot. Made from our stainresistant Lanoset polypropylene, Corona comes in a more than durable 40oz construction.'
Howard Lindsay, sales manager of The Mohawk Group, was also keen to emphasise that wool is not the only material of choice: 'While plain colours are an obvious choice for the bedroom, the discerning consumer looks towards raising the bar over plain twists with the introduction of more complex texture.Woodlawn brings this texture through a classic trellis design in ribbons and flowers developed through a cut and loop construction that adds a subtle yet effective extra dimension to an otherwise plain carpet. 'Available in 21 colours,Woodlawn is beautifully manufactured from Stainmaster Xtra Life Tactesse nylon and features a lifetime limited warranty, underlining its position as a premium carpet for the most luxurious of bedrooms.'

Lesley Inman, UK operations manager for Edel Telenzo Carpets, asked: 'Why on earth would you put anything else but carpet in a bedroom? The cold snap we had in January would have reminded everyone just how important it is to find the floor under your feet warm and cosy especially in the bedroom where you are most likely to be bare footed!' Consumers can afford to choose softer, deeper and cut pile twist options, she continued, stating that 100% wool is ideal. 'And if it’s a good quality, branded wool fibre, it should last for ages with proper maintenance, as well as allowing people to keep their heating turned down a bit.'
FlooringNews
News by Dennis Flower Edel Telenzo recommends regular vacuuming with an upright, beater bar-type cleaner and regular airing, while emphasising that carpet traps air-borne allergens rather than allowing them to circulate in the air. Inman recommends, from the Telenzo wool carpet ranges, Barbados, Nature Wool Select, Burford Bridge or Brisbane Extra for the bedroom. Steve Upperton, sales director of Axminster Carpets, was another to agree on the trend for comfort in the bedroom: 'Normally populated by plain styles, the bedroom enjoys occasional use so homeowners are free to choose the lightest of shades to enhance the feeling of luxury. The Devonia Plains collection is ideal for bedroom use, particularly in the lighter 40oz weight and will give a truly luxurious feel underfoot in any of 60 shades.' Brockway is another to offer a 100% wool range, combining wools from Norway and the Shetland Islands that are blended together to create soft, delicate tones. The result is the company's recently-launched Shetland range, which includes a choice of grey, fawn and cream colourways in heathered effect in a 100% wool, 50oz carpet available in eight colourways and 4m width. The company's latest range further endorses its commitment to supporting traditional British industries, as seen in its Lakeland Herdwick range. This is made from the wool of the Lake District's Herdwick sheep.
Ulster Carpets is also of the opinion that the current economic climate is encouraging more consumers to make their home more comfortable. It is therefore continuing to update its extensive range of products with the latest colours and designs to provide them with options to match all interior design schemes. Recent additions include Elements Wilton, a 100% wool, cut and loop, woven wilton, offering a contemporary yet sophisticated alternative to plain carpet. Ferndale, an 80/20 woven axminster for those looking for a more classic choice of floor covering. Finally, Country House Collection, another 80/20 woven axminster, is comprised of three elegant designs, presenting a versatile range of individual products or co-ordinating designs.

David Cormack, marketing director of Cormar Carpets, said: 'Escalating costs and an uncertain climate are forcing many homeowners to stay put - and while many are clamping down on spending, they are still investing in home basics - including new floorcoverings.
'From a consumer's point of view a new carpet instantly makes a room feel more homely and it’s not an exercise likely to break the bank either. To buy carpet for an average sized 4m x 5m room priced at £21 per sq m would cost £420 + VAT - a lot less than some new flat screen TVs.'
Cormar's recently-launched Heavenly collection has been priced at £16 per sq m to make it affordable for most families or first time buyers on a restricted budget. Made from 100% easy care, hard wearing polyester, Heavenly is a 1/8th gauge carpet, tufted at 24oz and features a luxurious deep pile that is ideal for bedrooms where traffic is lighter. Available in a 4m width only, it comes in 12 fashionable plain and flecked colours.

Business News 155 firms on ‘danger list’ The latest report into the UK Floor Coverings market from industry analysts Plimsoll rates 155 of the UK’s leading 1000 floorcoverings companies as being in financial danger. Amid calls for bail-outs and emergency measures, Senior Analyst David Pattison asks: “Should we just let them fail?”
First UK steps for new stair system With a successful record within Holland and a growing reputation throughout the rest of Mainland Europe, Stair Make-Over is bringing its revolutionary products to UK shores and is on the hunt for distributors and retailers looking for fresh and innovative products. Stair Make-Over offers a complete DIY staircase refurbishment system that comes conveniently packaged and that can transform all types of tired staircases, whether wood or concrete, without professional installation.
Guaranteed for 10 years, Stair Make-Over comes in a two-step pack in either 100 or 140cm widths to ensure consumers can transform their staircase no matter how big, small or high. It is as easy to fit Stair Make-Over onto angled and curved staircases as it is straight ones and it can also transform open staircases. The tread-over-tread system is available in maple, beech, cherry, oak and wenge treads with matching, off-white or optional brushed aluminium risers.
Not only retailers can benefit from a unique product that will draw consumers to store, Stair Make-Over also has an online Stair Calculator at www.stairmakeover.com, where consumers enter their staircase measurements and it calculates exactly what and how much they require before directing them to their nearest stockist.
This support, along with a small footprint in-store display and literature, is an invaluable service for those retailers looking to attract a new profile of customer to store and helps to improve the diversity of product offering. T +31 40208 6222 www.stairmakeover.com
‘Facebook’ for flooring Interiors Birmingham is the setting for the official launch of Interiors Hub www.interiorshub.com, the brand new website that will embrace all interiors sectors.
Developed by UBM Live, the Interiors Hub will deliver the ultimate information-based website for interiors professionals that puts news, jobs and supplier details at the fingertips of all who are professionally involved in the various aspects of interiors projects: architects, interior designers, lighting designers, specialist kitchen, bedroom or bathroom designers, flooring professionals, plus those who supply the various interior design sectors, and those who report on interior design trends.
Central to the Interiors Hub will be a database of suppliers. Depending on the level of information the suppliers opt to supply, this will include up-to-date contact information, product details, copies of recent press releases, images, PDF versions of brochures and videos. The database has already got off to a good start, with details from almost 400 companies listed. Two industry-wide forums have also been set up on the Interiors Hub. Interiors Hubbub is a Facebook group (www.facebook.com) to exchange ideas, project information, product or project images, amusing pictures, general chit-chat and even the odd bit of gossip! It is open to all.
Pattison argues: “There is no doubt in my mind that recessions catch bad businesses out. Those companies that have entered this period ill-prepared have placed themselves at a distinct disadvantage. Many have grown used to running their businesses on high risk business models, propped up largely on finance.” Of the 155 firms rated as Danger, the report shows:
• 53 increased their debts last year; they are now carrying almost twice the level of debt we recommend. Using debt has become a means of propping up their businesses, for many this started to become an issue up to 3 years ago.
• 128 saw profits fall last year and 113 are losing money.Their costs are clearly ahead of sales and they have failed to respond to changes in their business structure.
• 61 managed to increase sales last year, some would argue an enviable task. However it only proves that despite their rising debts and mounting losses they have been desperate to maintain sales at any cost. • 90 are firms which are “well established” but are failing to adapt to the modern floor coverings market and are now falling behind the rest of the market as a result.
In summary, it is clear that many of these 155 ‘danger’ businesses are fundamentally poor, aggressive or disruptive and are unhelpful to the market. With newly prudent banking systems in place, raising quick finance will not paper over the cracks as it once did. Recent examples of failed businesses in the news bear this out. Zavvi, Woolworths, Whittard and Wedgewood, were all rated Danger by Plimsoll prior to their demise.
Latest research shows that the UK floor coverings industry is not immune to the current crisis. The sector has overcapacity, 33% of businesses suffered a fall sales last year, with competitive pressure forcing many to see sales fall by 9%. The reality is, for many of these 155 danger businesses, their problems go back years, certainly long before the current UK slow down, yet they have failed to fix their problems. The Plimsoll analysis says not all of these 155 businesses will survive. Of those who do, very few will be in their current shape and many will be in the hands of new owners.
The floor coverings market too will see winners emerging out of the crisis. There are 558 terrific companies who can compete fiercely on price, and are largely debt free while holding their margins. Most are operating at the height of productivity. These will be the one’s to watch in the next period,” says Pattison.
The Interiors Hub Forum is a Linkedin group (www.linkedin.com).The aim of the Interiors Hub Forum is to facilitate the exchange of ideas and information between professionals involved in the supply and execution of interior design projects for both corporate clients and private investors. It is restricted to those working in interiors sectors. 52

News Charles takes lead on charity ‘challenge’ The Furnishing Trades' Benevolent Association's (FTBA) new chief executive is former RAF squadron leader Charles Kerrigan.
Charles takes over from interim chief executive Nigel Blake on February 2 and will also work as clerk designate for the Worshipful Company of Furniture Makers (WCFM) which shares premises with the FTBA at Furniture Makers' Hall in Austin Friars, London.
"I join the FTBA at a challenging but immensely interesting time," said Charles who spent 26 years in the Air Force as an aero systems engineer. "The FTBA has a long and distinguished history and I am committed to ensuring its continuing role as the industry's only dedicated charity.
"Along with the WCFM, the charity is a vital part of the furnishings industry. While very different organisations, it will be my role to explore and develop synergy between the two while maintaining the equal importance and profile of both."
In his most recent role as head of human resources support services for News International (since 2000), Charles was involved in the company's charity committee and has taken part in the London marathon for the past five years raising money for WhizzKidz. Married with three children and soon-to-be-six grandchildren, Charles and his wife Gillian have a London base at Canary Wharf and enjoy spending weekends at their country home in Lincolnshire.

With the experience and contacts that I have built up over the years in the industry, I believe that I bring something of real value to the company and am looking forward to the future at Whitestone.” John lives in Great Harwood, Lancashire, with wife Claire and daughters Hannah and Naomi. He enjoys travelling, which luckily is an essential part of his job. John is also a keen photographer.
