Do not leave your room unless advised to do so by the House Manager, a Fireman or other responsible person. Put on your shoes or slippers and have a coat or other warm clothing available and any essential medicines. Do not use the intercom.

THE PERSON DISCOVERING A FIRE WILL: Operate the nearest fire alarm. (The Fire Brigade is to be called immediately)

Proceed to the Assembly Area by the shortest route. The Assembly Area is:

Do not use the lift. Do not delay by looking for personal belongings other than essential medicines. Close all doors behind you, do not lock them.

ON HEARING THE FIRE ALARM By night Put on dressing gown and house shoes. DO NOT stop to dress fully. Ensure that others in your room are awake. Go to the place of assembly, shutting all doors behind you.

Leave your room, close the door but do not lock it. Sound the Fire Alarm on the way out. Proceed to the Assembly Area. Await the arrival of the House Manager do not go looking for them.

Go at once to the place of assembly. At all times ACT QUIETLY. DO NOT STOP TO COLLECT YOUR PERSONAL BELONGINGS.

Before any emergency operation is attempted, a minimum of two authorised persons must attend and establish effective communication with one another.

PROCEDURE: A BEFORE OPERATING HANDWINDING MECHANISM 1 Call the Lift Engineers’ Emergency Service. 2 Switch off the power supply at the main switch (marked). 3 Warn any passengers in the lift that it is about to be moved and therefore to stand clear of the doors and remain in the car until instructed to leave. 4 Check that all landing doors are closed and locked. 5 Ensure car door/gates are closed. 6 One authorised person to position him/herself where motion of the car can be established and to confirm and communicate the movement and position of the car to the second authorised person in the machine room.

B TO MOVE THE CAR 7 8 9

Providing the car is free to be moved in the downward direction then it should be wound to the nearest floor below. If this is not practical due to distance and/or lack of balance, an attempt should be made to move the car upward. If the lift car does not move, cease all attempts, reassure trapped passengers and await Lift Engineer’s arrival.

PROCEDURE:

A BEFORE OPERATING MANUAL LOWERING VALVE 1 Call the Lift Engineers’ Emergency Service. Switch off the power supply at the main switch (marked). 2 3 Warn any passengers in the lift that it is about to be moved and therefore to stand clear of the doors and remain in the car until instructed to leave. 4 Check that all landing doors are closed and locked. 5 Ensure car door/gates are closed. 6 One authorised person to position him/herself where motion of the car can be established and to confirm and communicate the movement and position of the car to the second authorised person in the machine room. B TO MOVE THE CAR 7 The second authorised person to actuate the manual operating valve (clearly marked) and confirm with colleague that the lift car is actually moving. 8 If the lift car does NOT move after three seconds when the lowering valve is actuated, cease all attempts at emergency operation, reassure trapped passengers and await Lift Engineer's arrival. 9

Only if the car continues to move, actuate lowering valve until the car reaches a lower landing level, while continually communicating with colleague during complete operation..

PASSENGER RELEASE 10 Release passengers by opening doors with the release key. 11 LEAVE LIFT SWITCHED OFF AND ENSURE ALL LANDING DOORS ARE CLOSED AND LOCKED. DO NOT ATTEMPT TO MOVE THE LIFT IN ANY OTHER FASHION

1. In the event of fire it is the first duty of all concerned to prevent injury or loss of life. 2. For this purpose, you should make certain that you are familiar with all the means of escape in case of fire. Since there may be an opportunity, in the event of a fire, for you to attack it with the nearest fire extinguisher or hose reel, you should also be familiar with how to use them. 3. IF YOU DISCOVER A FIRE OR one is reported to you, you should SOUND THE ALARM 4. The Principal or the authorised deputy is responsible for ensuring that the Fire Brigade is called immediately on the sounding, of the fire alarm. 5. Immediately after the fire alarm has been sounded, you should .1 see that any doors immediately surrounding the fire situation are closed, and .2 escort persons from the area of the incident, in accordance with the detailed fire drill procedure, ensuring that all doors through which you pass are closed after you, and .3 when the persons arrive at the assembly point, which is call the roll and notify the Principal at once of the result (e.g. “all persons present” or “one missing”, and the name and likely location, as the case may be).

Guidance Posters and Training Aids Although in some cases it is a legal requirement to display Regulations Guidance posters, the main benefit remains as an invaluable staff training aid. These signs help raise staff awareness and act as constant reminders.

Under these regulations from 1st January 1993 employers must Analyse display screen equipment workstations to assess the health and safety risks to users Reduce any risks identified as far as reasonably practicable (in the case of workstations in service on 31st December 1992 these must be made to comply with the regulations by 31st December 1996)

As of 1st January 1993 these regulations, made under the Health and Safety at Work Act 1974, place additional duties on employers to AVOID hazardous manual handling operations so far as reasonably practicable ASSESS unavoidable manual handling operations and reassess as necessary TAKE steps to reduce risk of injury from such operations so far as reasonably practicable

Plan daily work activities of users so that breaks or other activities periodically interrupt display screen work, to reduce workload at the equipment Provide eye and eye-sight test for employees and supply any special corrective appliances required after such eye or eye-sight test Provide adequate health and safety training to users of display screen equipment

Guidelines on AVOIDING INJURY BY SAFE LIFTING Does the load have to be moved? If it does, THINK about it first: ASSESS weight, stability, centre of gravity, ease of grip, size of handholds, surface texture USE handling aids if possible

When selecting your post height consider other obstructions such as hedges and fences etc. Posts are better sited in flower beds or soft ground as a third of the post needs to be fixed below ground level.
