Stockton

ince the 1940s, Stockton has seen major commercial and residential developments. The farthest inland seaport on the West Coast has maintained strong trade relationships with 27 countries and exports over 2,000,000 tons of American products annually. Stockton also supports very active and world-renowned talent including a civic theatre, symphony, opera, and chorale groups. The Haggin museum is rich in collections and exhibits that tell the stories of local and California history, as well as works by late 19th and early 20th century artists.

This diverse community includes a large Chinese, Mexican, Japanese, and Filipino population, which is reflected by the street names, architecture, and in the faces and heritage of its citizens. Throughout the year, multi-cultural festivals reflect that diversity in the microcosm that Stockton has become for the world.

Bob Hope (Fox) Theatre

After a presence in this city that has lasted 90 years, its Spanish mission-like appearance towers over Main Street. The bright lights of the FOX sign attached to the cupola and the marquee's big capital letters give you the nostalgic vibe of a classic movie house. The six-foot ticket booth is complete with windows and an opening at the bottom, leaving room for eager moviegoers to receive their tickets for the night's event.

A few steps through the main doors, you're standing in the middle of an exquisite rotunda complete with twelve carved, plaster columns. Each are detailed with carved faces encased in a lattice of gold-leaf plaster ribbons, rising up to a capital supporting the ceiling. The ceiling is adorned with scenes of conquistadores, heraldic shields, knights, and lions—and topped off with a gorgeous chandelier featuring over 100 lights. Lower your gaze and you'll see the beautifully red-patterned carpet and terrazzo floors. Stare long enough at this astounding display in architecture and you might assume you're inside a vintage Victorian castle.

Then comes the entrance to the theatre. Just before you walk through those doors, catch a glimpse of the beautiful, eight-foot-tall, gold-leafed, etchedmirrored panels. Then, pass through the doors and take in the magnitude of this legendary theatre's auditorium. Numerous rows of red cushioned seats on a slight decline lead to the main stage. A proscenium arch with a rose-colored ceiling featuring gold, copper, and silver stenciled stars. The center of the arch features a gilded carved face surrounded by a shell and a long red curtain draped down to the stage floor.

If the entrance and rotunda are just the geneses of transporting a visitor to a past golden era, this auditorium solidifies the experience. Beautifully carved wooden frames and brackets outline the lofts and ceiling, and a balcony half the length of the main floor provides an exceptional view of the stage from above. All this wonder and amazement in one setting.

Miracle Mile

Stockton’s Miracle Mile is a legendary spot in the city. This pedestrian-friendly historical spot has an abundance of specialty shops and boutiques, outdoor cafés, diverse dining, and a vibrant night life that you’ll want to experience immediately. Plus, live events, car shows, and sidewalk sales throughout the year are bound to grab your attention as you stroll down the Mile.

The abundance of quality cuisine is astounding here. Whether it’s Fat City brew & bbQ, Gian’s Italian Deli, la Palma Mexican Cuisine, Cocoro bistro, or Go Falafel Greek Food, you’re going to be deeply satisfied with your choice.

No matter the obstacle on his path, José Hernández's "out-of-this-world" dream turned him into an inspiration for his San Joaquin County community and the nation.

The Children's Museum of Stockton provides an educational and entertaining experience once you step through the main doors. It features hands-on, play-based exhibits that will enhance a child's understanding of how the world works. One of those exhibits is the Destination: space exhibit, which integrates STEM education and the inspiring story of a young Stockton boy who dreamed of becoming an astronaut. A central figure in San Joaquin County's connection to space. That figure is one of Stockton's own: astronaut José Hernández.

José Hernández was born in French Camp, but would grow to call Stockton his home. An immigrant son, José would spend half of the year in the US and half in La Piedad, Michoacán, Mexico. As a young child, he worked alongside his parents and other immigrant farmworkers throughout the fields of California. Unable to speak English until he reached the age of 12, José’s first memory of space was adjusting the family television as they prepared to watch the Apollo 17 mission in 1972. Unbeknownst to him at the time, that moment was a sign of what his future would hold.

José participated in the Upward Bound college preparatory program in school and graduated from Franklin High School. In college, he was in the Mathematics, Engineering, Science Achievement (MESA) program, designed to support educationally-disadvantaged students in attaining 4-year degrees in STEM fields. José would

eventually earn a degree in Electrical Engineering from University of the Pacific in 1984, followed by a Masters in Electrical & Computer Engineering from UC Santa Barbara.

In 2001, José joined the Johnson Space Center in Houston, Texas and after 3 years, was selected for the NASA astronaut training program. After years of training, which included flight training, water & wilderness survival, shuttle launch & landing preparations, and spending days in an underwater laboratory, José was finally selected as a mission specialist on the sTs128 mission—a 14-day journey in orbit studying the physics & chemistry of microgravity. During this mission, José became the first person to use the spanish language in space, which he did while tweeting.

After sailing among the stars, José ran for Congress, became an advocate for immigration reform, and joined the Board of Directors for Space United, a nonprofit humanitarian space agency. He now owns a 20-acre vineyard near Lodi, and in 2021 began bottling wine under the name Tierra Luna Cellars, which is Spanish for Earth Moon Cellars.

From the son of immigrant workers to a navigator through space, José has remained true to the hometown that helped him carve his path. José Hernández is one incredible example of what it means to be StocktonTrue

The arts have played a prominent role in providing a wide variety of artistic and cultural activities in Stockton.

Stockton Symphony is the third oldest continuously performing orchestra in California, while the Stockton Civic Theatre has entertained audiences for well over half a century. The beautiful Bob Hope (Fox) Theatre, dubbed the “Crown Jewel of Stockton,” is home to worldclass concerts, a classic film series, hilarious comedy shows, and so much more.

You actually have two courses to choose from at Oak Grove Regional Park. The Purple and Gold courses rest among manicured grass flanked by massive oaks. While this is the most popular course in Stockton and home to a lot of tournaments, it’s also a great place to learn the sport.

The course at this regional park, also known for its zoo and Japanese Garden among other features, offers a bit more of a challenge. You’ll have to work your way around numerous trees while also avoiding the large water feature that lurks at three of the holes. The challenge is worth it, however, as the course is beautifully maintained and makes for a great day outdoors.

Located at Swenson Park Golf Course, this disc golf course was created by the Delta Windjammers, our local disc golf advocates, and hosts of some pretty big national tournaments. If you find that disc golf is something you’d like to spend more time doing, look into the leagues and other events here and join a supportive, fun community. Swenson is also home to the Disc Golf Pro Tour OTB Open offering up a challenging course layout specially designed for the pro event.

The beautiful waterfront Stockton Arena opened in 2005 and has been a tremendous addition to Downtown Stockton. You cannot come to Stockton without visiting Chuck’s Hamburgers, located inside Pacific Avenue bowl. This old-fashioned diner has been a Stockton institution since 1960, and was featured on California’s Gold with Huell Houser! The portion sizes are crazy huge, big enough to share, so bring a hearty appetite to enjoy the giant pancakes and crispy French toast platters.

A recent $2.5 million renovation allows guests to see the phenomenal collection of 19th and 20th Century American and European art collections in a new light. The museum is home to the largest public display of JC Leyendecker work in the world. You would know him best from his Saturday Evening Post covers. Other notable pieces from Bierstadt, Bouguereau, and Renoir are also on display.

To continue your appreciation of authentic Asian flavors, a visit to Green Papaya Restaurant should be on your list. Green Papaya Food Truck opened a Thai restaurant in an unassuming strip mall. The food truck

Take a moment to digest your wonderful meal by immersing yourself in a sea of blooming beauty at the university Park World Peace Rose Garden. This rose garden is a showstopper from May through September, and you may see the bees at work with their cross-pollination. The garden is situated inside University Park and it truly is a fragrant site. Trust us when we say you will need the walk before your next stop—on to dessert!

There are plenty of parlors to find greattasting ice cream across the city. Best of all, ice cream can taste good anytime of the year. Between University Park and your next destination, the closest stops include Gleason’s Ice Cream and House of Ice Cream. Both will fulfill your craving for quality and flavor.

DAY 3:

If you are visiting in the summer, rent a kayak or water bike from the Downtown stockton Marina, located inside the historic Waterfront Warehouse, and then explore the beautiful Stockton deepwater channel and Delta. The office opens daily at 9am, so you should start to feel hungry after an hour session.

Walk off your brunch with a stroll around the Miracle Mile. It’s easy to get lost in the beauty of the many specialty shops and boutiques. Make a day of it and see all the locally owned and operated restaurants, galleries, and vibrant nightlife.

Now that you’ve worked up an ample appetite it’s time to chow down at one of Stockton's dining institutions, sam's Cafe Dubbed the "Cheers of the Miracle Mile," the diner has been a staple since 1995, serving regulars and visitors alike.
