2022 MID-YEAR REPORT | JANUARY — JUNE A LETTER FROM THE CEO Hello Stockton Partners, Stakeholders and Community Members,
As I mentioned, the first half of this year has been a busy one. Our team has accomplished so much, here are just a few highlights:
It is hard to believe we are already halfway through the year! It has been a while since we have sent out an update, with new team members coming on board, and the creation of a new festival, our team has been busy. But we are happy to share all of the activities and efforts that the Visit Stockton team has been working on this year, and we are excited about the remainder of the year ahead.
Stockton Restaurant Week – January welcomed our 13th annual culinary celebration with nearly 30 participating restaurants featuring special offers and deals for customers during the 10day event.
May Sports – the month of May was busy on the hosted sports front, with every weekend booked with amazing sports competition including NCAA DII Women’s Golf Regionals, NCAA DI Men’s Golf Regionals, OTB Open Disc Golf Pro Tour, and the West Coast Conference Baseball Championships. Feast at the Fox Feast at the Fox – the fundraiser for the Delta College Culinary Academy returned after a twoyear hiatus on Friday, May 6. 160 guests enjoyed this third annual event which raised over $13,000 for this worthy program.
Visit Stockton Tourism Breakfast On the travel side, the local visitor economy is still in recovery mode. While we experienced a robust 2021 travel season with lots of pentup demand and road trips driving up visits and overnight stays, 2022 has seen some softening in overall hotel occupancy thru June. While this is not where we would like to be, the positive news for our hotel partners is that local lodging rates have never been higher, and overall city-wide hotel revenue is up so far this year. This year is also looking up for lodging inventory with the renovation and February opening of the muchanticipated Studio 6 Suites on the Downtown Waterfront, and a brand-new Hampton Inn and Suites coming to Arch Road this fall.
NCAA Golf Regionals
Stockton Flavor Fest Stockton Flavor Fest – this new food and culture festival, in partnership with the City of Stockton, took place May 14-15 at Weber Point and welcomed 12,000 to the downtown Stockton waterfront. Learn more on page 4 - 5.
Brick City Bucket List – our latest “experience trail,” is a great way to get to know Stockton for a first-time visitor or a current resident. This pass offers an opportunity to earn a free t-shirt by checking into all the location on this trail. Looking ahead to the second half of the year, our team is equally busy. In the weeks and months ahead, we will host the National Baton Twirling Championships at the Arena, kick off a new podcast called This is Stockton, host our 6th annual Stockton Brew Fest, launch a new food related experience pass, host the inaugural Stockton Sports Foundation Sport City Golf Tourney, and get busy planning the next Stockton Flavor Fest. I cannot express enough how proud I am of our team and what we have accomplished so far this year. They are doing amazing work on your behalf, and ensuring that the Stockton story is being told, shared, and celebrated far and wide. We are excited about the second half of the year and hope to see you out in the community!

CURRENT EFFORTS Brick City Bucket List The Brick City Bucket List is the newest experience pass from Visit Stockton, covering some of city’s best-known landmarks and locations, explaining the history and stories of why we love this town. From strolling the beautiful Downtown Waterfront to restocking the closet at Lincoln Center, our list helps visitors and residents alike get out and explore the amazing Brick City! For the first time, this experience pass includes an audio tour narrated in-house by our Content Manager, Anthony Esteves, and individual videos for every location. We have also incorporated two ways to win, including our traditional check-in challenge (the first 50 people to check into all locations receive a Visit Stockton t-shirt), and a photo uploader contest with a weekly gift card giveaway! The photo uploader contest allows us to gather new user generated images to use throughout our marketing campaigns, plus helps support local business with the distribution of dining gift cards. This pass was specifically designed to be sharable by our partners, and our office is currently designing print and digital materials to help spread the word. Additionally, we are continually adjusting our marketing efforts to increase the visibility of this pass. It’s a great way to see the city and learn some of our history whether someone is in town for a sporting event, Parent’s Weekend, or visiting friends and family. For more information, and to register for a pass, visit brickcitybucketlist.com. Stockton - See It For Real Visit Stockton is working on a new marketing campaign that will feature the real people of Stockton, featuring local business owners, entrepreneurs, and folks who choose to make Stockton their home. The “See It For Real” campaign will get up close and personal with real Stocktonians, sharing the stories of what makes Stockton seriously awesome — for real. Throughout July, we will be bringing a small creative crew to various locations to shoot interview-style video, gather images, and record transcriptions, getting to know our subjects and asking why visitors need to see and experience their business for themselves. The full campaign will include individual video interviews, storytelling blogs, digital ads, and other supporting collateral. The campaign is slated to launch in late fall/early summer, and we look forward to sharing the stories of what make our community unique and special.

IN REVIEW Stockton Restaurant Week Back for the 13th year, and Annual Stockton Restaurant Week took place January 14-23, 2022. Like 2021, we included a digital passport which housed information regarding participating restaurants, check-in deals, and opportunities to win dining gift cards. This 10-day event is a fabulous way for Stocktonians and visitors to support local business by getting out and finding their new favorite restaurant. We saw nearly 1,000 sign-ups for our digital passport and had 28 restaurants participate in this year’s festivities. January is historically a low-time for restaurants, and our efforts help boost their revenues and the general awareness of the fabulous dining scene in our community.
Tourism Breakfast Back for the first time since 2019, our fiesta-themed Tourism Breakfast was a time to celebrate the accomplishments of our office and share insights into our future. Hosted at the Hilton Stockton, we welcomed 120 attendees to our morning program. Jesse Salazar, our Video Production Manager, created an incredible year in review video, capturing the highs of early 2020 momentum, the stress felt during the pandemic, and the flourishing of support the Visit Stockton team created in our community. In addition to our celebrations, we welcomed the Mariachi Ocelotlan of the University of the Pacific to provide live entertainment and to help us kick-off the celebrations of the inaugural Stockton Flavor Fest. To watch our Tourism Breakfast review video, visit our YouTube channel. Collide Arts Festival / Stockton Arts Week Visit Stockton and the City of Stockton made the decision to move the annual Stockton Arts Week and Collide Arts Festival from its original dates in October 2021 to Spring 2022. This decision allowed us to integrate this celebration of the arts into Stockton Flavor Fest and our 10-days of Downtown activities leading up to the Fest. For the first time, our office administered the $30,000 California Arts Council grant program for the City of Stockton, which included: soliciting artist applications, working with community members and organizations on project formulation, progressing grant agreements, distributing funds, and reporting. Artist grants were spread across two main areas: Stockton Arts Week workshops and Collide Arts Festival (held at Stockton Flavor Fest) workshops, installations, live art, and performances.

The California Arts Council grants allowed us to host a myriad of programming at the inaugural Stockton Flavor Fest, providing artist exposure we otherwise would not have had at the Fest. While this was the last of the three-year funded grant to the City of Stockton, we are hopeful we will fill this gap in our budget in order to continue bringing this kind of exposure of the arts and creatives to Stockton Flavor Fest. San Joaquin County Grant In August 2021, our office applied for and received a $80,526 grant from the San Joaquin County Tourism Recovery Grant Fund. Our grant focused on three main areas: Stockton Metropolitan Airport promotion, revamping of the San Joaquin County Farm Stands and Markets Guide, and creation of the San Joaquin County Farm Trail. This grant allowed us the opportunity to share our marketing skills outside of our immediate boundaries, focusing on a county-wide effort and creating synergy between our neighboring towns. We recently closed-out the grant and will continue to support the Farm Trail and airport efforts info the future. Feast at the Fox Feast at the Fox, our annual fundraiser for the Delta Community College Culinary Arts Program, was nothing shy of a success. This sold-out event raised over $13,000 for the Culinary Arts program, and provided an incredible learning experience for 24 student chefs. In addition to current students, 7 graduates of the Delta Culinary Arts program lead the event as the executive chefs, wowing our audience with their eclectic and local-focused menus. This event was made possible by over a dozen generous sponsors and partnership with the City of Stockton. We look forward to hosting this event in 2023 and continuing our celebration of the agricultural offerings and growing culinary talent in our community! 3
Flavor Fest By the Numbers
12,000+ Attendees
v
isit Stockton, with the support of the City of Stockton, executed the next great culture, food, and arts festival for our community.
Stockton Flavor Fest was hosted May 14 & 15, 2022 at the Weber Point Events Center in Downtown
Stockton. The two-day festival was a celebration of the food, music, and cultures that make-up the diverse communities and cultures in Stockton, California. With the help of local nonprofits, organizations, artists, and creatives, Stockton Flavor Fest created a sense of pride and excitement in our community. The care and curation put into this first year event was unlike any other seen in the history of this community, and Stockton deserves that. Some of the highlights from this year’s events were: ▪ ▪ ▪ ▪
Vendors showcasing the diversity and global food offerings reflected in the Stockton area Two days of entertainment programming, including local musical and cultural performances Creative activities, including interactive workshops and live art Exclusive events including a Drag Brunch benefiting the San Joaquin Pride Center, Silent Disco, and culinary demonstrations ▪ A taste of California’s finest libations at the Craft Beer & Wine Tent ▪ A commitment to sustainability, including the use of earth-friendly, compostable cutlery and serveware, clean energy, and waste diversion stations PURPOSE AND OBJECTIVE The purpose and objectives of Stockton Flavor Fest were to bring people back to Downtown Stockton, support local businesses and non-profits, and celebrate the diversity and cultures of our community. Bring People Back Downtown Stockton Flavor Fest was the direct result of years of shut doors and low-business activity in Downtown due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Our philosophy was that our residents and visitors needed a “welcome back” to Downtown moment, something where they felt safe, inspired, and excited, to spark the re-energization in our city-center. We created an equitable, low-cost and family friendly festival that reflected the values of the community members it served. Our hope was by highlighting the cultures that make up our city, participants would feel accepted, included, and celebrated.
“It was super amazing, it was honestly a dream come true. So dope to be a part of it, be a DJ, open up for the Ohio Players. The crowd was amazing. Stockton man, we’re truly blessed to have a day like this, I hope everybody enjoyed themselves, and can leave off with a positive note moving into the summer. Stockton Flavor Fest, the best thing that happened so far this year, this is amazing.” - DJ Kenzo

PURPOSE AND OBJECTIVE (CONTINUED) Supporting Local Businesses & Non-Profits We went into this festival knowing we wanted to be a local-first event, and we spent a generous amount of time making sure everything we put together would benefit our local businesses and non-profits. We hand-selected all 81 food and artisan vendors at the festival, put out a call for applications and contracted with dozens of local musical performers, hosted a free community resource fair outside the festival footprint, and worked with 36 nonprofits in a profit-share program to financially support their efforts for time volunteered at the festival Celebrate the Diversity and Cultures of Our Community Stockton, CA was named the Most Diverse City in America by U.S. News in 2020, something we are proud of and wanted to celebrate through this festival. Our hope was to reflect the cultures of our audience through our vendors, entertainment, and workshops. Through all our different programming, we took great care in making sure that local providers, artists, and performers were vetted first, and that we never over or underrepresented one culture or group. The affects were a beautifully curated and reflective schedule of activities. OUTCOMES The sentiment during and post-Stockton Flavor Fest was overwhelmingly positive. For a firstyear event, we are extremely proud of the responses we have received from city officials, vendors, attendees, and partners. Some of the highlights we heard was the feeling of safety our attendees felt, how clean the festival grounds were, how respectful the crowd was, how many options of family-friendly things to do were provided, how beautiful the park looked, and how many diverse offerings were available. We saw so many shares of content from the festival on social media that it nearly broke our Instagram account. Hundreds and hundreds of people shared images and videos from the festival and were often tagged with phrases like “please bring this back next year” and “thank you for doing this for Stockton.”

Stockton Taco Trail Dos Summer 2022
Stockton Brew Fest September 10, 2022 8
In April 2021, Visit Stockton launched the Stockton Taco Trail, our mobile-exclusive pass that allowed users to explore tasty dining options, check-in, and win Stockton Taco Trail prizes. The initial promotion for the Stockton Taco Trail was set to end in December 2021, but with the reopening of the county we decided to continue its promotion through July 2022. And just to spice things up (see what we did there?), we made the decision to re-introduce the Trail as Stockton Taco Trail Dos. Our team is hard at work reaching out to new and existing Taco Trail participating restaurants to re-register them for the new trail, creating new prize opportunities, and rebranding the Trail. Be on the lookout for the spiced-up version dos in late Summer 2022.
Returning to the beautiful Downtown Weber Point Events Center, Stockton Brew Fest will be held on September 10, 2022 from 1p-4p (12p-4p for VIP).
