Self Led Visits
Victorian Street & Costumed Interpretation
You and your children will want to see our buzzing Victorian Street; packed with both original favourites and new shops including the; drapers, police station, printers, chemist, toy shop, violin makers, ironmongers, brand new grocers shop, and not forgetting our working blacksmiths & their exquisite workmanship. See the street alive with Victorian life through costumed interpreters; don’t be afraid to stop and ask them questions.
Museum Shop
Visitors can also enjoy a visit to our fantastic new shop, stocked with an amazing range of products and souvenirs, where adults and children will be spoilt for choice. If you are bringing a large party, you might want to ring ahead and pre order on: 01642 527375.
Sweet Shop
Children will love that the first shop they see on entering the Victorian Street is J.F. Smith, the sweet shop. If you are bringing a large group of children you might want to ring ahead and pre book your order to save long queues on the day of your visit.
Walled Kitchen Garden & Orchard
For those with a taste for the outdoors, take a moment to explore our recreated walled kitchen garden as it celebrates all four seasons. Please check opening times throughout the Winter months.
Self led Activity sheets
Activity sheets are being designed in conjunction with teaching staff and will be available in the near future. Until then, teachers are welcome to call in prior to their school visit and design their own.

Have you heard about our new ‘Online’ schools booking system? It’s the way of the world!
Teachers are now required to make an online booking for a self led visit and or school workshop visits. This new system will invite you to enter your main school email address and a password that all teachers within your school will need to share.
To help you along with this new booking process you can print the guide as a download from our website www.prestonparkmuseum.co.uk or request a guide; ‘How to Make a School Booking’. Please contact reception desk on (01642) 527375.
Booking check list
Before you embark on a booking please have the following ready;
Several dates to visit in case the first day you select is not available Type of visit; i.e. self led or a specific workshop Do you require a packed lunch space?
A valid school purchase card; with relevant payment permissions/allowances agreed, debit card or credit card. If your school does not have a purchase card, an individual can use their own card. To avoid disappointment you are advised to book your museum visit before you book your coach.

Victorian Values
A set of four Victorian themed workshops: 1 hour each.
Selected Wednesdays & Thursdays 10.00am – 11.00am, 11.00am – 12.00 noon or 1.00pm – 2.00pm Max of 3 workshops per day, two workshops am & one pm, same theme for each. Max of 30 children for any one workshop. £1.00 per child admission, £25 each workshop per class ‘Victorian Toys’
‘Victorian Wash Day’
Recommended for Key Stage 1 — Reception, Yr 1 & 2 Children will be introduced to a brief history of Victorian toys, followed by a demonstration of how to work the toys. After the demonstration, children can have free time playing with and exploring a selection of wooden & tin toys.
Recommended for Key Stage 1 & 2, Reception — Yr 6 Children will discover the variety of arduous tasks required to launder clothes in Victorian times, including washing with carbolic soap, putting clothing through a mangle & labour intensive ironing.
‘Victorian Home’
‘Victorian School Day’
Recommended for Key Stage 1 & 2, Reception — Yr 6 Here, children will have a greater understanding of how difficult it was to live in times without the convenience of electricity and heating. This is a great object handling workshop and gives children the opportunity to explore original artefacts. It is also a good exercise in comparing household utensils from then to now.
Recommended for Key Stage 2, 7-11 yrs National Curriculum Links - History at K.S. 1&2 Unit 2 ‘Children should be seen and not heard!’ During this strict Victorian school day workshop, children will learn about the three R’s and enjoy two lessons; a typical writing lesson and an arithmetic lesson.

Essential cost details: If you only attend a workshop and you are not visiting the museum, only the £25.00 workshop fee applies, and you are not required to pay the standard admission of £1.00 per child. However, if you would like a combination of self led and a workshop you will be required to pay a £1.00 admission fee plus a workshop fee of £25.00.
‘Making a Mark’
Tuesday 8th October- Thursday 17th October 2013 (Excluding Mondays) 10.00am – 12.00noon and 10.00pm – 2.30pm Maximum of 30 children for any one booking Suitable for Key Stage 2, National Curriculum Links; History & Art FREE ;Funded by Dfes/Arts Council England In partnership with the National Portrait Gallery, London, ‘Making a Mark’ is a brand new series of art and history based workshops aimed at primary aged children Key stage 2. Ask our Learning Officer for more details about this project. As this is a funded event all bookings should be made directly through our Learning Officer on 01642 528842. This workshop is not available online.
Brand New History and Art workshops!
‘Making a Mark’ workshops are an exciting and creative opportunity to engage Key Stage 2 children. Working with experienced staff at the museum a practicing artist & a professional photographer; children will gain first class, hands on experience.
The History
This multi layered project bridges together local history (with national relevance) and a variety of artistic skills, including fine art and photography. Children will enjoy being detectives as they learn more about their local heroes through fact finding missions in the museum and portraiture reading.
The Art
Children will then be invited to try their hand at painting a fellow classmates’ portrait, through a series of exciting, short sketching and painting exercises.
The photography
Then children will be invited to try on a selection of costumes as they start to create individual Victorian characters. Once created, the children will have the opportunity to express this through composing a photographic portrait and recording it.

World War 2 Workshops
Tuesday 5th November — Friday 15th November 10.00am — 12.00noon or 1.00pm — 3.00pm Maximum of 30 children for any one booking £1.00 per child admission £25.00 per class per, workshop In this packed workshop, children are collectively introduced to key players during WW2 such as Adolf Hitler and Winston Churchill. Children are then split into two groups after which they focus on two of the four themes, then they swap groups ensuring children experience all four themes to be covered, including; Shelters, Rationing, Evacuation and the Home Front. All being well, real sweets will be rationed at the end of the workshop. Maximum of two workshops per full day visit. Victorian Christmas workshops

Tuesday 3rd December - Friday 13th December 10.00am — 12.00noon or 1.00pm — 3.00pm Maximum of 30 children for any one booking £1.00 per child admission £25.00 per class per, workshop This is a wonderful festive Christmas workshop. Here, children will discover the origins of Christmas, the Christmas tree and of course the now ever popular Christmas card. Once children have been introduced to the history of Christmas they can enjoy making a selection of festive decorations. This workshop is very hands on. Maximum of two workshops per full day visit. What are Theme Boxes useful for? Theme boxes are a really useful way to support term time class projects, or theme days and group events, either as a starting point or as a review at the end of a project. Who can use the new theme boxes? Although the theme boxes are marketed via audience type, any organised community group or school (within the boundaries of Stockton) can hire any of the above theme boxes. What is the hire charge? All theme boxes are £20.00 each to hire with the exception of the Victorian Costume box which is £40.00 to hire. This is a non-refundable hire charge. How many theme boxes can I hire at one time? You can hire up to two theme boxes at any one time, during a half term.
How long can I hire a theme Box for? You can hire a theme box for 4-5 weeks each half term. Collection dates and return dates will be given at the point of booking.
How can I book a theme box? Theme boxes can be book by contacting our Learning Officer on 01642 528842 All theme boxes need to be collected by a teacher or group leader from Preston Park Museum reception desk and signed out by both parties. Payment will also need to be made at this point, so please bring a cheque or cash with you otherwise you will not be permitted to take the box away. Theme boxes should also be returned to the reception desk.
