Periplum The Bell
Prometheus Awakes is part of the London 2012 Festival
WELCOME Who would have thought it? This year we celebrate a quarter century of SIRFs, and we are doing it in style, with exhibitions evoking a host of memories alongside a fantastic programme that stands comparison with our best. SIRF is now part of the fabric of Stockton’s year, and I hope you will take full advantage of the 2012 offer, which features around a hundred great shows, all but four of which are absolutely free. Some of the festival’s most memorable moments have been created on the Tees or its banks, so a return to the river was an absolute priority for SIRF 25. You will be delighted by the invention and sheer fun of Ilotopie’s Water Fools and couldn’t wish for a more dramatic and powerful Festival Finale than Periplum’s The Bell, which is taking place on North Shore. But I mustn’t forget to mention the astounding Prometheus Awakes on Stockton High Street, or the Labyrinth in Trinity Gardens or – tell you what, take this as your guide, bring a brolly or wear something waterproof and have a great festival. Frank Wilson Artistic Director
FESTIVAL LAUNCH WHEN Thurs 2nd 10pm WHERE High Street
Graeae and La Fura dels Baus Prometheus Awakes SIRF 25’s official opening is a remarkable event, specially created for the year of the London 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games. You will feel the earth move and the sky explode in this epic re-interpretation of a famous myth. The 8-metre tall figure of Prometheus rises from the ground and creates fire and humanity in defiance of the God Zeus. This production is a unique collaboration between Graeae (UK) and La Fura dels Baus (Spain) that will inspire with extraordinary stagecraft, large-scale projection,

Circus Ronaldo present Amortale at Trinity Green, Stockton Wednesday 1st - Saturday 4th August 7.30pm

Gigantikow Labyrinth Lasting for the whole week of SIRF 25, the Labyrinth is a unique project involving the artist Richard Gigantikow and a team of artists from Germany working alongside artists, makers and musicians from Stockton and the Tees Valley. Over the course of several days, a gigantic maze will be constructed beside the ruins 8 | SIRF 2012 | www.sirf.co.uk
of Trinity Church, using recycled wood from old packing cases etc. The Labyrinth takes its inspiration from Gulliver’s Travels, featuring people and scenes large and small. Members of the public are invited to get involved at every stage of the process, whether talking to the artists, answering ‘post it’ questions dotted around the site or enjoying
the impromptu entertainment. From Thursday lunchtime until its spectacular ending on Sunday evening, the Labyrinth showcases Stockton’s rich diversity of musical and cultural traditions. From brass bands to choirs, drumming to Dvorák, the musicians of Teesside and beyond provide an ever changing soundscape to this
fascinating, evolving structure. The Labyrinth music programme has been put together by Wildcat Mike McGrother and Cattle and Cane’s Fran Hammill. Don’t miss the celebrations on Sunday evening, when there will be a spectacular and original live performance culminating in a gigantic bonfire as the Labyrinth goes up in smoke. www.sirf.co.uk | SIRF 2012 | 9

Requardt and Rosenberg Motor Show Requardt and Rosenberg’s Electric Hotel created a huge impact at SIRF 2010 and we are delighted to present their latest work. In Motor Show, a forgotten urban landscape comes to life, uncovering stories of young lovers and others drawn to the darkness at the edge of town. Stolen moments are glimpsed up close and on the horizon; the perspective constantly shifts but the headphones worn by each audience member ensure that half-seen actions are heard with pin-sharp clarity. Motor Show features a stunning musical
soundscape and electrifying contemporary dance in which even the cars are choreographed. Tickets (free) are available from ARC Box Office Parental Advisory: contains adult themes. Not suitable for young children. Motor Show is co-commissioned by Brighton Festival, London International Festival of Theatre, Norfolk+Norwich Festival. With special thanks to Greenwich Peninsula. C-12 Dance Theatre Trolleys
Seasaw is inspired by the relationship between people and water. In Stockton, Tilted Productions will take the audience on a trail along the banks of the River Tees, punctuated by haunting images and that evoke strong impressions. In childhood the seaand waterside seem to be idyllic places, but what is the reality now?
This is a street ballet for five supermarket trolleys, created by award-winning Australian choreographer Shaun Parker. Watch as the trolleys struggle to find love and friendship. Part street dance, part acrobatic spectacle, Trolleys is a high-octane, intensely physical and humorous outdoor performance – on wheels!

Beijing Chaoyang Cultural Centre Lanterns of Terracotta Warriors Exhibition To mark the 25th anniversary of SIRF and celebrate the close cooperation between SIRF and the Beijing Chaoyang Spring Carnival, our friends in Chaoyang District have contributed this magnificent exhibition of lanterns based on the world-famous Terracotta Army. The lanterns were initially 14 | SIRF 2012 | www.sirf.co.uk
commissioned by the Chaoyang Arts Centre to mark the 2008 Beijing Olympic and Paralympic Games and this is the first time they have been seen outside China. The discovery of the tomb of China’s first emperor, Qin Shi Huang, was one of the most important archaeological finds of
the 20th Century. The emperor was buried along with 8,000 terracotta warriors, arrayed in battle formation and ready to defend his immortal soul. The brightly coloured, illuminated lanterns bring warmth to the faithful reproductions of the warriors.
The Lanterns of Terracotta Warriors, displayed in the dramatic setting of the ruins of Trinity Church, are a must-see highlight of SIRF 25.

A man inhabits a rather strange world constructed from hundreds of drawers and boxes that looks like a pop-up junk shop – it’s a place where he performs incredible acrobatics with unnerving skill in some impossibly tight squeezes. World-class circus from the island of Majorca.
Live drumming, flute and poetry combine to tell the story of a city where tower blocks are stone mountains and walls are urban tapestries. Award-winning poet Inua Ellams conjures incredible images of a city not unlike London and imagines a world beyond it.

Ilotopie Fous de Basin (Water Fools) The French company Ilotopie believes that every river is a reservoir of the imagination running through the urban landscape. They solved countless technical difficulties to create Water Fools, a dream world where beds and lamp-posts find their way into the middle of the river, to be navigated by incredible machines that skip lightly across
the surface of the water like insects. It’s a performance that mustn’t be missed; a treat for the eyes and ears full of constant surprises, brilliant colours and pyrotechnic effects. Periplum The Bell (La Campana) The finale to SIRF 25 is a sensory extravaganza taking place on Stockton’s North Shore, involving the entire audience in a 360-degree experience with huge mobile structures, soaring music, stilt and aerial performers, fire and pyrotechnics. The Bell begins on a battlefield, with an angel calling a war-ravaged clan to defend itself one last time. A spectacular struggle takes place as an army of stilt-walking wraiths and fire-wielding soldiers invades. When the dust has settled on the devastation, the remaining survivors seek to break the cycle and find peace, calling on the
public to help them rebuild. The creation of a gigantic, flaming bell provides a unifying symbol of hope for a better future. The Bell is presented by Periplum and includes actors from the Mexican National Theatre and pyrotechnics by The World Famous (who created the Trinity finale in SIRF 2009).
