Gothic Horror! 2012

Inspired by Victorian Gothic, the Museum and Grounds, this exhibition is the product of the fevered imaginations of Cleveland College of Art and Design’s Interactive Media students.

Celebrate traditional and heritage crafts at Preston Park Museum & Grounds through an exhibition exploring our popular ParkMade range. From the dynamic creations of our award winning blacksmiths, to unique woodturning from our own park timber, join us in creating a true home for traditional craft in the Tees Valley.


Community Curated Space 100 Years of Christmas

1st November 2012 - 29th January 2013

Members of the University of the Third Age (U3A) join forces with the Museum Collections Team in creating a mini-exhibition exploring how we have celebrated Christmas over the last 100 years.

Events and Activities Harvest Home

Saturday 29th September • 10.00am 4.00pm Free with normal admission

Join us as we celebrate our first harvest season in the restored Victorian Walled Kitchen Garden. Activities include food tasting, cooking demos, arts & craft for families and tours of the garden.

ParkMade Live! 2012

Preston Park Museum & Grounds holds it’s annual ParkMade Live! event celebrating the re-discovery of traditional trades and craft

Blacksmiths’ Forge-In

Saturday 6th October • 10.00am - 4.00pm Free with normal admission

Join us for this unique opportunity to see Blacksmiths from across the British Isles and beyond come together and showcase this fantastic craft in the traditional surroundings of the Victorian Street.

Kitchen Range; African Deli-ghts Saturday 27th October • 11.00am 3.00pm Free with normal admission

A delicious food tasting and cookery demonstration incorporating African delights served in a deli style. 3


Halloween Walk

Wednesday 31st October • 6.00pm - 8.00pm £4.50 per person, Under 5s Free

Annual spooktacular Halloween walk around the Museum & Park. Join us for this fright filled outdoor event and explore the Park like never before! Park & Ride (5.45pm onwards): Stockton Garden Centre (formally Peter Barratts), Yarm Town Hall and The Swallow Hotel in Stockton. Tickets available before the event: Stockton Tourist Information Centre, The Shambles, Stockton town Centre (01642 528130) and Preston Park Museum Gift Shop (see normal opening hours). Please wear warm clothing and bring torches/ lanterns as some parts of the walk are not well lit due to the nature and location of the event. There will be no parking at the Park on the night, please use Park & Ride.

Kitchen Range; Bonfire Toffee & Parkin

Saturday 3rd November • 11.00am - 3.00pm Free with normal admission

Celebrate the lead up to bonfire night with this cookery demonstration of delicious treats! Favourites such as parkin, black toffee, bonfire toffee and an alternative to the traditional sausage with herb bangers using produce from the Kitchen Garden will be on today’s menu.

Northern Children’s Book Festival

Saturday 24th November 9.30am - 4.30pm (last admission 4.00pm) Museum entry and event are free, although tickets to reserve your space with the authors are advisable.

Come to the largest annual free event of reading celebration for young people and meet 12 fantastic authors for an action packed fun day of time travel, reading, activities and fun. Christmas Celebration

Saturday 15th December • 11.00am - 3.00pm

Free with normal admission, although some activities may have a small charge. Join us for festive fun at the Museum this Christmas with arts and craft, storytellers and of course Santa’s Grotto in the beautifully decorated Victorian Street!

Kitchen Range; Chinese New Year

Celebrate the Year of the Snake with a delicious cookery demonstration and taste from the Orient.

Collections in Action

Tuesday 9th October Tuesday 13th November 10.00am - 12noon Free with normal admission.

Join the Collections Team as they work their way through the mammoth task of maintaining everything from Victorian costume to model ships!

Walled Kitchen Garden & Orchard

Join us in our newly restored Kitchen Garden to celebrate everything green-fingered. From our ‘Journeyman Gardener’ practical demonstrations, to fun ParkMade courses, there’s sure to be something to inspire! Journeyman Gardener: Putting Them to Bed

Practical demonstration on how to protect those valuable harvested vegetables over the winter period.

Garden Talk: Fortune Favours the Brave

Thursday 15th November • 1.00pm - 3.00pm Free with normal admission.

A brief history and fun quiz by our Senior Gardener, of those intrepid Victorian plant hunters, risking life and limb in pursuit of new plant species, fame and fortune. Contact: 01642 527820/528842 for advanced booking.

Journeyman Gardener: Raising the Temperature Saturday 19th January 10.30am - 12noon and 1.30pm - 3.00pm Free with normal admission, drop-in event.

Led by our Senior Gardener, defy the winter elements by creating your own traditional Victorian hotbed, with the opportunity to grow tasty early veg.

Journeyman Gardener: A Victorian Wonder

Join us for an afternoon of Rhubarb, Rhubarb and Rhubarb as we celebrate the diversity of this true Victorian wonder.

Try something new or rekindle an old hobby here at the Museum in our ParkMade Taster Days! All our classes are suitable for adults, no experience is necessary and everything including your lunch is provided. Our taster days also make the perfect unique gift for someone special!

Making a Mess! Under 5s Club

Tuesdays • 1.00pm - 3.00pm Each week there will be a messy craft, story and play time based on a different theme around the new Museum & Garden displays. Please note: Making a Mess! will not be on the week before school holidays or from 18th December 2012 and will resume again 5th February. Volunteering Opportunities

Here at the Museum and Park we are always pleased to hear from people who would like to get involved in our many areas of volunteering. We currently are looking for green fingered volunteers to help in the Kitchen and Winter Gardens. Full training and guidance will be given by our Senior Gardener.

CREATIVE KIDS October & February Holiday Activity Programme

Activities are free with normal admission (unless otherwise stated), however there is a 50p per child suggested donation to help with material costs.

Please note: Our children’s workshops are suitable for ages 5+ (unless otherwise stated); younger children are welcome however they will need some help from their adult during the workshop. Children must be accompanied by an adult during their visit and activities.

Please be aware that for drop-in workshops, when the session is full, tickets will be issued for the later slots.

As Bonfire Night is approaching why not have a go at making your own sparkly Catherine Wheel decoration? Perfect to take with you to the firework displays!

Create Chinese Snake Puppets Wednesday 20th February

Celebrate the Year of the Snake with this Chinese themed craft activity.

Make Wonderful Watering Cans Friday 22nd February

Inspired by the Park & Gardens, children will make and decorate their own watering can to take home. Perfect for those little gardeners! If you have any empty milk cartons please bring them along on the day.

Making MORE Mess! Under 5s Club

Tuesday 30th October • 1.00pm — 3.00pm Halloween Special! Come in fancy dress for all the usual fun filled activities but with a scary Halloween twist! Special trick or treat food demo activity will be held in the Museum’s new working traditional kitchen inspired by the Walled Kitchen Garden.

Tuesday 19th February • 1.00pm — 3.00pm Spring Time Celebrations! Celebrate spring time in this messy craft afternoon and story session.

Please note: Drop in activity, free with normal admission, suggested donation of 50p per child to help cover materials. Making MORE Mess is suitable for under 5s although older brothers and sisters are welcome during the holidays. Children must be accompanied by an adult at all times.

What’s the STORY…..? with Tanya Bentham

Thursday 1st November Times: 10.30am — 11.30am, 11.30am - 12.30pm, 1.30pm — 2.30pm & 2.30pm - 3.30pm (drop-in, free with normal admission, suggested donation 50p per child to help cover costs). Stories suitable for 5+ years although suitability for individual children is at their adult’s discretion. Join our storyteller as she tells terrifying tales here at the Museum.
