Workshops for schools this autumn 2012 ‘Victorian Values’ a collection of Victorian Themed Workshops from September – December Wednesdays and Thursdays 10.00am – 11.00am, 11.00am – 12.00 noon or 1.00pm – 2.00pm Maximum of 30 children for any one booking. £1.00 per child (admission) + £25 a workshop per class For those studying all things Victorian! Victorian Values includes a selection of four, one hour workshops;
‘Victorian Toys’ Recommended for (Key Stage 1 – Reception, yr 1 & 2 Children will be introduced to a brief history of toys, followed by a demonstration of how old toys work after which they can have free time playing with a selection of wooden & tin toys.
‘Victorian Wash Day’ Recommended for (Key Stage 1 & 2, rec – yr 6) Children will take part in a 60 minute demonstration learning about the variety of arduous tasks required to launder clothes in Victorian times.
‘Victorian School Day’ Recommended (Key Stage 2, 7- 11 yrs) ‘Children should be seen but not heard’ during this strict Victorian school day workshop. The three R’s will also be explored during this trip back in time.
‘Victorian Home’ Recommended for (Key Stage 1 & 2, rec – yr 6) Here children will have a greater understanding of just how easy it is having light and warmth in a modern home compared to Victorian times.

Big Draw Workshops Tuesday 9th – 19th October 2012 (with the exception of Monday) 10.00am – 12.00noon or 1.00pm – 3.00pm Maximum of 30 children for any one booking. £1.00 per child (admission) + £25 a workshop per class Come along and celebrate this National Event. Children will be able to express their creative drawing skills as they throw themselves into this Big Draw event. Inventions will be their inspiration. WW2 Workshops Tuesday 6th – 16th November 2012 10.00am – 12.00noon or 1.00pm – 3.00pm Maximum of 30 children for any one booking. £1.00 per child (admission) + £25 a workshop per class During this workshop, children will be introduced to four key areas of WW2; The Home Front, Rationing, Evacuation and Shelters, in particular the Morrison shelter. During the workshop children will be invited to go into our original Morrison shelter to experience how cramped it was for families. Maximum of two workshops per full day visit. Victorian Christmas Tuesday 4th – 14th December 2012 10.00am – 12.00noon or 1.00pm – 3.00pm Maximum of 30 children for any one booking. £1.00 per child (admission) + £25 a workshop per class This is a great opportunity for children to discover the origins of Christmas. Children will also learn about how the Victorians celebrated Christmas with their families & be able to have a look at what the first ever Christmas card looked like. This will then move into a practical fun session when children are encouraged to explore their creative side making their own traditional Christmas card. Museum update After more than two years of architects, contractors, demolition and rebuilding, Preston Park Museum & Grounds has finally reached completion of a major £7 million redevelopment. This Grade II listed building will reveal a complete transformation from the restoration of the building itself through to an exciting redisplay of the collection throughout the Museum & Victorian Street. See also the beautifully restored original Walled Kitchen Garden and Orchard with its wall repairs, decorative archways and the ongoing planting of a traditional Orchard.
Museum Shop Self led visitors can also enjoy a visit to our fantastic new shop, stocked with an amazing range of products and souvenirs you will be spoiled for choice.
Victorian Street & Costumed Interpretation You will want to see the Victorian Street; stacked with all your original favourites from the police station, printers, our Victorian chemist, toy shop, violin makers, and brand new grocers shop; not forgetting our operational blacksmiths & their spectacular workmanship. See the street teeming with Victorian life through our costumed interpreters; don’t be afraid to ask questions.
Sweet shop Children will love that the first shop they see entering the Victorian Street via reception is; J.F. Smith, the sweet shop. Just be aware, if you are bringing a large group of children you might want to ring ahead and book your order to save long queues on the day of your visit.
Walled Kitchen Garden & Orchard For those wanting a more leisurely pace to the day, why not stroll through our newly refurbished walled kitchen garden, and see ongoing planting of the traditional orchard.
Victorian Street Tea room If you cannot find the time to visit the tearoom during a school visit, why not come back with your family at the weekend to sample traditional teas and coffees.

‘Theme Box Interpretation’ Training Day (FREE) Wednesday 26th September 2012 10.00pm – 4.00pm (Lunch will be provided at the Museum free of charge & free car parking)
Special Guest Speaker Adam Bushnell* The Training This ‘Theme Box Interpretation’ Training Day is designed for teaching professionals classroom based, care workers, nursery leaders, museum volunteers and is ideal as a refresher for Museum professionals. We now have 22 theme boxes available at the museum that provide great object handling resources to stimulate learning through touch and demonstration. They can be used on site at the museum or as an outreach resource at your own venue) Four of the theme boxes are specifically aimed at under fives a further four are designed for reminiscence and 14 are aimed at primary school children. The Tour At the end of this training day you will be given a tour of our brand new museum. After a £7 million redevelopment, the museum is looking outstanding with great changes made to the Hall both inside and out, including our ever popular Victorian Street, surrounding grounds and brand new Walled Kitchen Garden and Orchard. Previously a teacher, he has worked in the UK and internationally in both private and state education. He is featured as a recommended author & storyteller on the ‘Reading is Fundamental’ and the ‘National Centre for Language & Literacy databases. Bushnell also regularly appears as the guest author at the ‘National Children’s Book Festival’ across the UK. 4

All scarecrows will need to be handed into Preston Park Museums & Grounds on Thursday 27th September by 5.00pm After this time your entry will not be accepted. (For full address please see below) Guidelines Each scarecrow should be supported by a wooden stake with at least a 40cm below the scarecrow so it can be placed into a straw bale. Theme boxes are a really useful way to support term time class projects, or general theme days and group events either as a starting point or as a review at the end of a project. Who can use the new theme boxes? Although the new Theme Boxes are marketed via audience type, any organised group or school (within the boundaries of Stockton) can hire any of the above theme boxes. What is the new hire charge? All theme boxes are £20.00 each to hire this is a non-refundable hire charge, with the exception of the Children’s Victorian Costume box which is £40.00. How many theme boxes can I hire at one time? You can hire up to two theme boxes at any one time from any one school or organisation. How long can I hire a theme Box for? It works out at approx 4-5 weeks each half term. Dates will be given at point of booking. How can I book a theme box? Book your selected theme box by contacting our Learning Officer on (01642) 528842, no earlier than one full term in advance of requiring it. What is the new collection system? All loan boxes will need to be collected by the teacher or group leader at the museum reception desk and signed out by both parties. Payment will also need to be made at this point. Theme boxes will need returning to the same point and signing back in by the return date supplied. 6
