Your guide to community courses across Stockton and surrounding areas
September 2011 - July 2012
Enrol early to avoid disappointment. See page 2 for details.
Welcome... A warm welcome from Tees Achieve and Stockton Riverside College to all our new and returning learners. Last year we delivered community courses to 4,500 learners in more than 100 venues across Stockton. We are working together to ensure we offer a wide range of complementary courses so learners can progress from first step introductory courses to higher level programmes wherever possible (see Lindsey’s story on page 6 as an example). We hope you can find an activity to interest you in this course guide for 2011-12. If not, please contact us with your suggestions. Skills and lifelong learning are important for many reasons - to improve chances at work or of finding work, to gain personal satisfaction, to help your children at school or to keep your mind and body active. These times of uncertainty have shown even more people see the value and rewards of learning whether in the workplace or at leisure. We work in partnership with many organisations to offer a wide range of convenient locations and provide opportunities based on your needs. If you are unsure about which course to take, we can offer you independent advice to help you make the right choices. Many people are finding adult learning is a key to getting where they want to be, so, whether you want to learn for Life, Interest or Work, don’t get left behind and ENROL NOW.

Lindsey Mitton overcame her low confidence and poor experience of maths at school to attend a Tees Achieve Numeracy class in 2010. Her hard work has paid off as she progressed to an Access to Higher Education course at SRC, gained entry for a national award and a new, realistic ambition of becoming a nurse in the future. She said: “I can now look at new topics that the teacher gives me without panicking and feeling stupid because I do not know it yet. I understand now that I can learn. I didn't think I could before. “I feel I know loads more and know I will be able to help my son when he starts school. It has changed the way I look at the world. I hold my head up now and feel great. I know I have a lot of hard work ahead of me, but I know I can achieve what I want to. My son and I will have a good life when I have qualified as a nurse.” 6

Michelle Wardle is well on the way to making the incredible journey from student to teacher! Despite suffering from severe depression which resulted in alopecia, Michelle was determined to gain her Literacy & Numeracy qualifications and improve her confidence and self-esteem. Michelle was recently one of the runners-up for the National Adult Learner’s Week Award and went along to Durham Cathedral for the presentation. This incredibly committed student has also completed her Safeguarding Adults and initial teacher training courses with Tees Achieve and gained her Award in Preparing to Teach in the Lifelong Learning Sector. And she even found time to volunteer to help other learners!

Manager John Sharp from Greenhams said:
“I’m delighted with the way Lauren has developed and become a valued member of the team.”
“We’ve taken on a number of apprentices over the years and ten percent of our branch staff currently come from the scheme.”
“She has all the attributes to make a good nursery nurse. It is a challenging job both physically and mentally, yet at the same time extremely rewarding. We are very happy to see Lauren is enjoying her employment with the company and we’re looking forward to supporting her through the Level 3 qualification.”
“Our apprentices have always been hard working, demonstrate the right attitude, are incredibly committed and quickly become valued members of the team – other employers should definitely consider taking an apprentice on.”
Calum Stamper is an apprentice with Chris Pink Joinery and is studying towards a Level 2 NVQ Diploma in Bench Joinery. He said: “I enjoyed joinery at school but college wasn’t for me. Tees Achieve assessed me and suggested pursuing a NVQ while working for Chris Pink. I’m gaining the practical skills I’ll need for a long-term career while also earning money.” Chris’ work is available to view at www.pinkjoinery.com 25

He said: “I enrolled to further my qualifications and improve my employability and life skills.” “I’m really interested in counselling as it gives me an opportunity to help people – I didn’t realise the vast range of pressures people can find themselves under until I did the course.” “I definitely think education is the key to improving people’s life chances. Tees Achieve courses are a fantastic way to continue learning in a friendly yet professional environment and the course material is well-presented and thought provoking.” “I would encourage other people to consider a course and I’m also hoping to pursue my interest in counselling through Tees Achieve.”
