PRINCE’S TRUST TEAM PROGRAMME

The Education Training Collective’s member colleges have delivered Prince’s Trust courses to young people across the North of England for more than 23 years. Our colleges have supported in excess of 3,000 young people in developing their employability and teamwork skills. By doing so they have made significant impact on their local communities through fundraising, community engagement and social action. The students themselves have benefited significantly through engagement within communities and have gone on to secure further training, employment and voluntary work.

GARDEN PROJECT HELPS STUDENTS TO GROW NEW SKILLS

There’s nothing quite like doing your bit to help others, to raise your own confidence and aspirations. That is certainly what a team of Prince’s Trust students found when they turned their attention to giving back to their community. Part of the youth charity’s Team project, delivered by the Education Training Collective, a group of unemployed young people from Bishop Auckland helped to transform the garden of a local supported housing group. Student Daniel, 19, said: “It feels good to be able to make a difference, especially working with an organisation that helps young people.”

“It feels good to be able to make a difference, especially working with an organisation that helps young people.”

The nine-strong team chose to offer a helping hand to the Home Group at Teesdale House. Finding that the garden area was overgrown and in need of some TLC, it seemed a natural choice for the group who, as part of the 12-week personal development programme, take part in a variety of projects and tasks. Etc. Prince’s Trust Team leader, Marc Iveson said: “The community project is a key element of the course as it shows the young people the impact they can have in their own area.” Planning, organising and carrying out a 10 mile sponsored walk from Middleton-inTeesdale to High Force, the team raised £205 and the Key Fund gave a further £250 to help cover the cost of the project. “The garden was overgrown, so a big part of the work was de-weeding the space, digging up the top soil and gravel and laying the anti-weed membrane,” said Marc.

Working through the recent heavy rain, the group planted trees, replanted pots, laid the gravel and also added a new seating area. Marc said: “The students did really well considering the weather we had. It rained three out of five days so the ground was very wet. “It was a fantastic opportunity for the young people to give something back, teaching them important skills in things like teamwork and communication.” Jane Robinson, Client Service Manager at the Home Group, said: “The Prince’s Trust Team have turned what was an overgrown outdoor area into a useful and welcoming space where people would want to relax and spend time.

“They worked tirelessly, including three days in the rain, without a single complaint.” The team also practised their negotiation skills and as a result received a helping hand on the project with discounts from JT Atkinson, Fletcher Recycling and the donation of a garden bench from Homebase. Home Group-Dales Accommodation supports young people age 16 to 35, who are homeless or at risk of homelessness, to develop the skills needed to achieve independent living in the community. They offer guidance and support through education, life skills and peer support to enable them to achieve, manage and maintain their own future tenancies.

“I’ve enjoyed being able to do something in the community, it has made me feel like a better person.”

PRINCE’S TRUST STUDENTS SPRUCE UP LOCAL NURSING HOME

Students from our Prince’s Trust programme spent time at Rydal Care Home in Darlington working on their community project. The project involved helping out in the local area whether that be painting and decorating, or adding nice touches to a garden, so students thought this would the perfect opportunity to help the care home.

One of our students, Thomas, said: “I’ve enjoyed being able to do something in the community, it has made me feel like a better person.” The group decorated one of the communal rooms for residents, including adding some pictures and bunting, as well as adding planters, creating a walkway and a bird feeder in the garden. The Etc. Prince’s Trust Coordinator, Matt, spoke about why the project is so important to the 12-week programme, he said: “The project helps with students’ confidence, communication and problem solving skills.” He continued: “Their resilience was also tested due to the weather conditions and having to complete the project within 2 weeks, but the students showed their true potential.” The students handed over their project to delighted staff and residents at Rydal Care Home, who showed their appreciation by putting on an afternoon tea for the hard working group.

JAKE

Despite having qualifications in both business and finance, Jake, 20, from Stockton, struggled with confidence which had previously hindered him when looking for employment. Jake has Asperger’s and at times he can doubt his potential and struggles to sell himself in social situations such as job interviews. He said: “I have always had a passion for finance and I had the qualifications to progress but my social skills have always held me back.” The Prince’s Trust Team programme is designed to help young people not currently in education, training or employment, to develop their skills. It certainly worked for Jake who applied for the job as a finance apprentice at the College and was successful.

RYAN

For Ryan the 12-week personal development programme also resulted in apprenticeship success. The course includes a work placement that the 19-year-old carried out in the College’s IT department. He impressed so much during the placement that he landed a business administration apprenticeship. He said: “For anybody who is struggling with confidence or unsure of what they want to do, I couldn’t recommend the Prince’s Trust enough, the 12 week course is so beneficial when looking for employment and I wish it could have been a lot longer!”
