Welcome to the 10th edition of Stockholm Fringe Festival And then we were ten. Entering our tenth year and reflecting back over a decade of Stockholm Fringe it is hard not to be overwhelmed by the incredible artistic force that is nurturing the independent cultural landscape around the world. It has been a genuine privilege for us to be so intimately close to the strength and passion that characterises the global fringe movement. Stockholm Fringe Festival has always aimed to highlight the brave, the edgy and the emerging; stories that give us new and wider perspectives on the complex world we live in. This year, to mark our jubilee, we have chosen to programme narratives that have sprung from women, non-binary and trans artists. This is a reaction in part to the applicant trend during our ten years of Fringe, part to the turbulent state of current world politics and our wish to amplify the silenced voices in the arts industry. We’re eternally grateful to have had the opportunity to welcome such a diverse range of stories and talent to our fringe platform in Stockholm. A heartfelt thank you to all our past, current and future artists who have shaped and will continue to refine this creative hub. Last, but far from least, to our audiences, partners and funding bodies - your continuous and empowering support has been invaluable to the development of STOFF. Without you, we wouldn’t be able to cement Stockholm on the international fringe festival arena which includes nearly 300 festivals around the world. Be FRINGE and celebang with us!

Pathways Since this years’ festival consists of over 80 unique acts, performances, and experiences, it is not weird to feel a bit overwhelmed with the pure amount of choices. We have tailored 10 recommendations so that you get an honest chance to navigate through the week. Read the descriptions and choose a path that feels good – click on it and read more about what we recommend you to see and do each day. Or why not follow different paths on different days?
The ‘Night Out With Mom’
The ‘I Want To Impress My Date’
Could your mother use a night out? Experience something new? But maybe you’re worried that you accidentally might choose something with an uncomfortable amount of sex, drugs and rock’n’roll? Don’t worry. These shows are of excellent quality, with a slower pace and guaranteed mom-friendly. Check them out!
Of course, you want to see something new, international and preferably a bit challenging, but you don’t feel comfortable bringing that special someone to be subject for anything too interactive or sex-focused. These shows will give you something interesting to talk about but probably won’t trigger any discomfort.
The ‘Shock & Challenge Me’
The ‘Just Give Me That Festival Feeling’
Are you tired of low pace and safe themes? Are you yearning for cutting-edge, interactive arts and chock-value? These recommendations are for you who are not afraid of a challenge, and want to reach that ”I need to sit down an think a bit about what I just experienced”.
You love a good festival, but you really don’t have the time to research the shows or buy tickets beforehand. You basically just want to sit down, have a drink and take a look at all the exciting people roaming the festival grounds. These experiences are not only free but of high quality and allow you to bring your friends along and just have a nice time.
The ‘100% Queer’ There’s too much cis-gendered heterosexual male art! Yawn! We’ve listed the queerest of the queer, for those who not only want queer themes but queer artists, queer audience and queer conditions.
The ‘I Want To Bring My Kid Along’ Stockholm Fringe Festival is mostly curated for an adult audience, but there is, of course, family-friendly pieces for those of you who didn’t get a baby sitter this week. These recommendations are free from extensive violence and sex – but are shorter and not too talkative.
12 | STOFF X 2019
The ‘Sex, Genitals and Gender’ It might not be something you’ve written in your forehead, but who doesn’t love a good, long talk about sex? The X in STOFF•X might not actually stand for Sexual content, but that does not mean that we lack X-rated experiences. Take the chance with these recommendations for an experience that challenges your conceptions of gender, sex, and sexuality.
The ‘Interesting People, Quality Stories’ When the Fringe concept first met the world, the focus was cutting-edge theatre. This might not exactly be the case anymore, but that does not mean that we lack quality theatre on our more conventional theatre venues. The shows are not conventional, but you’ll sit comfortably in the audience and can expect to be served some real quality stories from local and international artists.
The ‘Political, Radical and Intellectual’ Are you longing for something with a political core? Something to talk about, learn from and walk out as a better person? These shows serve politics, personal experiences and views you might need to think a bit more about in your everyday life.
The ‘Artists’ Networking and Educational’ Not only do we have great art, but we also have a series of StoffNet talks, workshops and networking sessions during the whole week. Meet new people, learn new skills and make your own voice heard.

What would a polar bear say if he could rap? Join the Iñupiaq performance artist as she raps you into a state of transformation and healing.
Terrible wonders walk the world but none the match for (wo)man. Sophocles’ Antigone.
A sewed and embroidered poem on plastic and fabric.

A physical, poetic larp. An ancient consciousness shortly get to experience life through a human body and explore how humans move and sense.
Humana is a dance film that imitates the body language of spiders and explores the idea of film editing as a primary tool for the choreography.
Does a word lose its original meaning if you say it 30 times? Can the same apply to an image? How about your own face?

An unlikely scenario: the whole of Andrew Lloyd Webber’s rock opera Jesus Christ Superstar performed by one woman accompanied by a single piano. Even more unlikely when that woman is Peaches, the electro-rock provocateuse who has made sexual frankness her calling card. With extraordinary emotional and dramatic power, Peaches sings each of the nine principal roles. Building on the work’s own brand of subtle subversiveness, Peaches’ tribute to a score she has loved since she was a teenager is a chance to see the star and the musical in an entirely new light.

MOVIE With a cast and crew of over 40 people and 20 plus songs from her back catalogue Peaches wrote, directed and starred in this fantastical narrative built obscurely around her development as an artist and performer from “bedroom wannabe to fully fledged rock-stardom and beyond!”. The result is a retrospective ‘anti-jukebox’ musical; a wild and wonderful trip through landmark moments in her career and albums, channeled through the eccentric and sexually skewed fibers of Peaches’ imagination: “Peaches Does Herself tells the story of a young woman who, inspired by a 65-yearold stripper, begins to make sexually forthright music. Her popularity grows and she becomes what her fans expect her to be: omni sexual in body and spirit. She falls in love with a beautiful sexual goddess, but gets her heart broken and then ventures on a path of self-discovery.” - quote: Source & copyright: www.teachesofpeaches.com

What inspires an artist that is an inspirational source for a whole generation of talent like Lady Gaga and Miley Cirus? Meet Tiina Rosenberg in a conversation with performance artist Peaches about her artistic journey, the art of being an being an independent artist/ producer and her feminist role models!
ABOUT THE ARTIST Peaches is an iconic feminist musician, producer, director, and performance artist, Peaches has spent nearly two decades pushing boundaries and wielding immeasurable influence over mainstream pop culture from outside of its confines, carving a bold, sexually progressive path in her own image that’s opened the door for countless others to follow. She’s collaborated with everyone from Iggy Pop and Daft Punk to Kim Gordon and Major Lazer, had her music featured cultural watermarks like Lost In Translation, The Handmaid’s Tale, and Broad City among others, and seen her work studied at universities around the world. Dubbed a “genuine heroine” by the New York Times, Peaches has released five critically acclaimed studio albums blending electronic music, hip-hop, and punk rock while tackling gender politics, sexual identity, ageism, and the patriarchy. Uncut has raved that her work brought together “high art, low humour and deluxe filth [in] a hugely seductive combination,” while Rolling Stone called her “surreally funny [and] nasty.” More info: www.teachesofpeaches.com
ABOUT THE MODERATOR Tiina Rosenberg: Professor of Theatre and Performance Studies at Stockholm University. She is the former rector of the University of the Arts Helsinki and has previously been a professor of Gender Studies at Stockholm University and at Lund University.
A multimedia music project that seeks to cast spells and conjure queens for a new tomorrow.
Are you looking or are you being looked at? Who is the performer if the work ceases to exist without its active audience?

Isen krackelerar.
100 artists gathered during #MeToo. We strive for the fantastical. We reach it through magical activism. Film showing and talk!
Heart wrenching music and visuals examine how one can be both a child and adult, and how a story can be both true and fiction.
Careful now! Surrounding us, the tenderness of listening. The ice crackles.

A cancer diagnosis means only one thing: Time to get laid! A true and inspiring story about a 3-time cancer survivor!
With an insane vision of the future this antishow fights Jantelagen while being on-point in ecofriendly glitter and stunning costumes.
A woman battling with an answering machine. This mix of theatre and dance questions our capacities to resist an unjust authority.

Censorship and threats to artists is not normally associated with Scandinavian countries, but events in Norway over the past months invites us to think otherwise. Since late November last year, a group of independent theatre-makers have been subject to intense political pressure, sensational media coverage and direct as well as indirect allegations of invasion of privacy and links to a series attacks mounted to the house of the former Minister of Justice, Tor Mikkel Wara. The way the press, the police and national politicians have handled the events around Ways of Seeing, shows that freedom of speech in Norway is under pressure from anti-liberal and anti-democratic forces. It is of utmost importance to ensure that the structures protecting freedom of speech and artistic freedom is strengthened in the time to come, and that they can make work without fear of sanctions also when they criticise those in power. Text by Ragnhild Freng Dale, commissioned by Pia Maria Roll, Hanan Benammar, Sara Baban and Black Box teater. THE NORDIC FRINGE NETWORK A Nordic notion growing in numbers!
The Nordic Fringe Network (NFN) initiative is aiming to simplify systems and provide economical touring opportunities for artists applying to one or more of the Fringe festivals in the Nordic region. Since it’s 2017 launch the Nordic Fringe Network has expanded! Current member festivals: CPH Stage Festival (Denmark) Lahti Fringe Festival (Finland) Fin Fringe (Finland) Gothenburg Fringe Festival (Sweden) NO Fringe Festival Bergen (Norway) RVK Fringe Festival (Iceland) Stockholm Fringe Festival (Sweden) Zagare Fringe Festival (Lithuania)
The aim of this network is to elevate the local through the global. To act as gateway to the Nordic region for overseas artist but most of all to be a launching pad for Nordic fringe artists wanting to share their work globally. 2019 marked the launch of the pilot edition of the Nordic Fringe Season at England’s largest fringe (Brighton Fringe Festival)! 12 acts from across the Nordics, presented under a united Nordic
Fringe Network label with the support of The Nordics and all the Nordic Embassies in London. Future Nordic Fringe Seasons are planned in Australia, Canada and beyond! If you like to host a Nordic Fringe Season in your country, please get in touch! Contact details below! Stockholm Fringe Festival (STOFF) is a multidisciplinary arts festival, acting as a ‘stage’ for local and international artists to present their innovative work ranging from performance to installation art and anything in between. The festival stands for artistic freedom and focuses on out-of-the-box and “alternative” works that may not fit into mainstream performance or exhibition spaces. STOFF is a chance for arts practitioners to test new ideas, network and collaborate with other artists, develop work, and get inspired by many different creative expressions. Not only is STOFF about encouraging emerging artists who are developing their craft but also welcomes established groups and individuals whose work promotes innovative work practices. Through international guest appearances like The Infernal Comedy with John Malkovich, Forced Entertainment, Christeene, Mykki Blanco, Peaches and The Wooster Group, the festival wishes to bridge the gap between the established and the emerging.

Young Stoff is the festival’s youth initiative, which focuses on young people’s creativity and artistry. We want to highlight tomorrow’s artists by offering a platform where young artists can experiment and present new work. A strong voice speaking out on issues concerning art and politics through creative stories. It is the heart of the festival that originates from the idea of young people’s right to experience and produce art. The Fringe wants to be involved in creating new opportunities for young artists today, through different collaborations and projects. Through artist speed dating and workshops, artists have the opportunity to find new networks and inspirations.
If you are an artist between 15- 23 years old or producing theatre for children and young people, please contact linakarlmark@stockholmfringe.com for more information on how to get involved.

When John Malkovich came to town, it was to perform at Stockholm Fringe Festival. It’s something to get smug about. What makes the co-founders most proud of the festival that’s celebrating ten years, is the fact that their event is a place where Swedish and international stage art beyond the beaten tracks has been able to find a home and grow bold. A free zone for the unexpected in times when art all to often is forced to back down and adjust to status quo.

Cretive Direction & Graphic Design: Onwards from STOFF 2010 This is a story about a being - affectionately known to its friends & followers as ‘STOFF’. In 2010 after an incredibly long, often exciting and sometimes challenging gestation period, STOFF emerged into the world. As with all living things in the early years of existence, our little friend took some time to toddle round, explore, stretch, grow & to gradually find its true personality and values. With each passing year, STOFF learnt from its mistakes, it learnt from its audience & it learnt from the team who birthed it. And, in turn, we learnt from STOFF. From the start, there were certain things that were crystal clear to our young hero. STOFF believed in diversity and that the world could hold endless beautiful possibilities - if we only gave it the chance and treated it with kindness and respect. During its early explorations, mischief frequently rose to the surface and fun was never far behind. Yet, along with all the sass, it was easy to detect a more serious & pensive side to STOFF. There was an intelligent, calm, considerate and political side to this wonderful entity. It welcomed creativity in all forms, with open arms. It was hard not to fall in love with our flourishing protagonist. I had the good fortune of meeting STOFF right at the start of its life. In the beginning, before any of us were clear what STOFF would grow to be, I worked with the team to design the festival’s brand-identity. Over the years, as STOFF’s personality has grown stronger and more luminous, this identity has been tweaked & refined to better represent the festival it is today. In the past 10 years, I’ve directed photo-shoots for the cover, amused myself by creating surreal collages and used graphic design to structure a programme of shows that, I hope, is easy to understand & digest.
