S TOKKEÂŽ STORIES

Meet the family

One happy, little boy in his stroller.

Marie Murstad is the international sales manager for the Norwegian brand Holzweiler, while Christian Murstad is head of sales at the Holzweiler Agency clothing company. They have a home in Ekeberg, ten minutes from downtown Oslo, with great views of the fjords surrounding Norway’s capitol.

Managing family life:

A TEAM IN LOVE AND BUSINESS Marie and Christian worked together before falling in love eight years ago. They are now parents to six-month-old Billy and function just as well as a family, as they do as colleagues.

M

arried couple Christian and Marie have made their home on a hill overlooking the fjords surrounding Oslo. They share the house with their six-month-old son, Billy, and Christian’s sixteen-year-old son from a previous relationship, Casper. “We worked together and were good friends and colleagues. After a party, we kissed, and I actually never went back home to my apartment. Two months later, I officially moved in. We kissed, and there was no going back,” explains Marie of how the two fell in love. →

Mornings with the family at Christian and Marie’s house, the dining area is the heart of the home.

S TOKKE® STORIES

Our expert's advice Make contact from the start! Socialization begins at birth – the foundation for social relationships is built during the first 6 months. So, this is the ideal period to spend lots of quality time together. Babies are born with a natural desire for love, affection and undivided attention. As a new parent, try to focus on fully enjoying interacting with your baby – making eye contact, smiling and cuddling them. You should also take every opportunity to have plenty of skin-to-skin contact. This will not be only a wonderful experience for you and your baby but is also very important for strengthening your bond.

Marie and Christian have a huge outdoor deck. They are looking forward to when Billy is running around.

5 ques tions about everyday life :

"You can’t spoil a child with too much love."

Discussed around the dinner table: This and that regarding how our day has been. Favorite dinner: Homemade carrot soup with ovenroasted chicken. For Billy – porridge. Best family vacation: We just stayed at the Ocean Beach Club in Cyprus. It was a wonderful place to travel with a small child. We also love staying at my parents’ summer house on the coast of Hvaler in Norway. Best everyday tips: Allow more time to get ready than you think you’ll need. My experience with a small baby is that everything takes longer. If you start stressing, the baby will sense it. Planning and deep breaths are my top tips. Favorite playtime activity: Billy loves to sit in the Tripp Trapp® chair, in his newborn seat, while holding a rattle or having fun while lying on his baby gym.

Staying close to Mama, always.

That was eight years ago. Today, the couple are happy parents to sons Billy and Casper. “We wanted a child together for a long time, so Billy was very welcome,” says Marie. Both grew up in loving, supportive families, with parents that collaborated well. “I had such healthy role models when it came to parenting, caring and love. Marie and I often say how lucky we are to have such good parents to look up to. We want to give that to our children,” says Christian. “You can’t spoil a child with too much love. I grew up with a demonstrative, affectionate family. I’m like that with Casper, giving hugs and showing my love. I want both boys to feel safe showing affection and to always feel loved,” Marie adds.

Within the kind, polite environment they strive for, Christian loves Billy’s curiosity. “Most children want to look at everything, but he seems extra curious, so attentive to his surroundings. I love that. I will always encourage him to try new things and go new places,” Christian says. WORKING PARENTS

They got married three years ago in Barcelona, with their nearest and dearest attending. The couple first met at work and have worked together ever since – now at a Norwegian fashion brand and sales agency. “The fashion industry can be hectic, so we are grateful to have a clear understanding of each other’s work days,” says Christian. → S TO K K E ® 201 8

Billy is not entirely sure if a bath was a good idea.

They view working together as a strength, though it can make traveling a challenge. “We have to go on the same business trips, so fortunately my mother can join us to help with Billy,” Marie says, smiling. Marie worked throughout her pregnancy and feels lucky to work for a family firm. “One of the advantages of a family business is that it reinforces family values – family comes first,” she says. They have adapted to their new life and make sure Billy is comfortable in his surroundings. “On a work trip this summer, I soon realized that traveling with Billy takes more planning. But it doesn’t have to hold me back. I just have to plan and adjust. If I see he is not happy, I may leave or reschedule a meeting. He comes first,” Marie says. Given their healthy work rhythm, it’s no surprise

they’ve established a cooperative routine at home. Christian gets up with Billy every morning. “Marie gets some time to herself in the morning. I need to do all I can, since she is alone all day,” says Christian. “I love that Christian wants to spend as much time as possible with him before he leaves for work. And, the second Christian gets home, he opens his arms for Billy. It is all about being a team. The more we help each other, the better life becomes in these crazy baby months,” Marie laughs. Big brother Casper also does his share when he lives with Christian and Marie. “I am very proud of how involved Casper is,” Christian says. Christian is a second-time father, sixteen years after Casper was born. “I feel lucky to have this experience again. My buddies think it is awesome that I am going for a second round,” he grins. Marie has always aimed to be a calm, relaxed mom. Christian’s experience helps. “I haven’t had to worry, since he has gone through so many of these situations. Christian is a secure, calm person; it is nice to be able to lean on him. He is also the best at changing diapers. Billy has more fun when his dad changes him,” Marie explains. Christian thinks that the time by the changing table should be well spent. There is no need to rush. “When Billy and I are at the changing table, I try to make it calm but fun for him. If you stress, the baby feels it. We take our time and make it more of a bonding moment.” Marie praises her husband. “You are such a good Dad,” she says. NEW PRIORITES

The duo are seamlessly in sync with each other, taking turns with who cares for Billy and who prepares dinner. Their first few months with Billy were hectic but happy. “We were on cloud nine, so happy, when Billy was born,” Christian says. “So happy – and so exhausted!” Marie adds. As a first-time mother, she has experienced the same overwhelming feelings most new parents do. “As they say, it is impossible to be prepared. But – above all – parenthood is just as amazing as everyone says,” she notes. Having a baby has also changed their lives – and their priorities. “Our needs come second, now. But to have created something that is part Marie and part me feels like a miracle,” Christian says. →

OUR HOME

Marie is sure she has around 3000 pictures of Billy on her phone and happily shares them with friends. “I have become as devoted as humanly possible,” she laughs. “He is just the most beautiful little person I have ever seen.” Casper has been a part of Marie’s life since the couple began dating. Christian’s love for Marie grew when he saw her with him. “It is not surprising that Marie is such a caring mother, given how she has been with Casper. She has been his bonus mom for eight years. From day one, she was warm and loving towards him,” Christian says. Both he and Casper were ready for a feminine touch to enter their lives. “I brought some green plants and curtains into their boys’ apartment. They were doing absolutely fine on their own, but I added something to the picture, I guess,” she says.

They live in a light, minimalistic home. Christian is the neater of the two. “I like clean spaces and prefer a tidy home. As Billy is running around with his toys, I run after him and clean up,” he laughs. While their house has white walls with a Nordic feel, there are splashes of color. “I absolutely believe that you can have nice things and still have children. I care about nice interiors and good design and that hasn’t changed just because we have a baby. You don’t have to compromise,” he says. They remember the Tripp Trapp® chair from their own childhoods and feel that the brand fits their own taste. “Stokke represents the proud tradition of Norwegian design. Few brands have managed to create what they have created. We plan to keep our Tripp Trapp® chairs, so someday Billy and Casper can make use of them, too,” notes Christian. Since they spend more time at home now, they want it to be a comfy environment. “A home is meant to be lived in. We love having people over for dinner or an open house on special occasions, such as our Constitution Day celebrations. If someone spills, we just clean it up. I love that people feel welcome at our house,” Marie says. Their garden has splendid views, and Marie spends many weekdays walking around Ekeberg with Billy in her Stokke® stroller. “As a new mother, you seek out safety in experiences and products. At first, it is all about learning what works for us. Safety and trust are key when choosing products. My son is so precious, and I will guard that with everything I have,” she says. PATERNITY LEAVE COMING UP

Christian spent the two first weeks at home with Marie and Billy and will soon have an extended paternity leave. “I can choose how I take it. This time I am going for three consecutive months, and I look forward to that time with him,” he says. Their local healthcare station is also understanding when the new parents of a baby boy forget their appointment. “We were supposed to go for our six-month checkup today. Both Marie and I forgot. I called, and luckily they just laughed and said ‘This happens’. It was amazing.” Christian grins at his wife and son, growing a little sleepy in his mother’s arms, “We're lucky.” “Yes, we are,” Marie says, grinning back.

S TOKKE® STORIES

Growing family life:

R E A DY F O R A DIFFERENT ROUTINE Kristin and Ørjan have had to settle into a new way of life, with the addition of two small children to their family. All of a sudden, maintaining consistency in each and every day is very much appreciated – both by the children and their parents. Meet the family Kristin Eliesen is a global digital experience manager and Ørjan Steindal is an IT manager. The couple has built their own house in Høybråten, a suburb of Oslo. Here, they share a home with their two small children, Alfred (2.5) and Henny (6 months).

Ø

rjan and Kristin share a home with their two children, Alfred and Henny, in Høybråten, right outside Oslo. Kristin grew up here, and her parents live close by. She has brought her family back to her roots, and all four love being so close to nature. The couple had known each other several years before falling in love. “Our friendship grew into love, and that is now four years ago,” Kristin says. A lot has happened since then, including having two small children. Alfred is two and a half, while Henny is six months old. They also built their own house a year ago. “We knew right away that we both wanted children. We had been together a little over a year when we felt ready,” Kristin explains. Alfred arrived in July 2015 and was named after Ørjan’s grandfather. Henny was welcomed into the world just under two years later. →

Kristin and Ørjan try to create special moments out of everyday activities, such as making dinner or walking home from daycare.

Family time around the dinner table. Alfred’s topic of choice is “dinosaurs”!

“We wanted two kids, with not too big of an age gap, so they could be close. Everyone says it must be tiring to have two children in diapers at the same time, but we are managing just fine,” Ørjan says. NEW NORMAL

For the family of four, humor is essential for a harmonious and happy life. “You have to be able to joke around and laugh. We do not take it too seriously when things don’t go exactly as planned,” Ørjan says. Kristin agrees. “I try to look decent, and then I get spit-up all over my sweater. That is just how it is,” she laughs. The couple say life has become a little less spontaneous with two young children. “Things are more routine. I enjoy the TV shows on Friday nights – I was not very interested in them before,” says Ørjan. Consistent days are also important for them when it comes to the children. “Safety and security are key. We need to make the most of our days, but try to not be too strict with routines. It doesn’t matter if everything isn’t perfect. If the kids are happy and have what they need – that is what matters,” Kristin says. Alfred goes to daycare, while Kristin is currently on maternity leave with Henny. Ørjan’s employer is flexible, and he appreciates being able to work from home. “Working from home saves a couple of hours a week commuting. I am grateful to have that kind of understanding from my boss – it is not about where you sit, but the work you do,” he says. BUSY WEEKDAYS

Mondays to Fridays are busy. Alfred wakes up around six, and Ørjan tends to him. When Henny wakes, Kristin feeds her, before the family have breakfast together. The grownups get their morning coffee, while Alfred has bread and Henny eats some porridge. “Ørjan makes Alfred’s lunch and packs his bags before taking him to daycare. Henny and I get dressed and go out for a walk, every day,” Kristin says. Kristin often meets up with other friends on maternity leave, before shopping for dinner and picking up Alfred from daycare. “When we get home, Alfred plays with Henny on her blanket on the floor, before dinner,” she says. She says Alfred is very caring and has adapted well to becoming a big brother.

Kristin and Ørjan involve their kids in daily activities.

“We have taken care to make sure he gets the same amount of attention as before. We have tried our best to make the transition to a family of four as smooth as possible.” They make sure that Alfred has alone time with each of them. “We go for a walk or read a book, while the other parent cares for Henny. It is good for both children to have some time that is just theirs. But Alfred loves time with Henny. He asks about her as soon as he gets home from daycare,” Kristin explains. Henny is also very fond of her brother. “She loves sitting in the newborn seat in the Tripp Trapp® chair, watching him play. He starts entertaining her. When she is in her bouncer, he tries to lull her to sleep. They are very cute together,” Kristin says. →

5 ques tions about everyday life : Discussed around the dinner table: We talk about our day. Alfred shares what’s on his mind or what he’s learned. Favorite dinner: Norwegian dumplings, hotdogs or fish. Best family vacation: Going to Ørjan’s parent's in Florø, on the west coast. Alfred's and Henny’s cousins often visit. We spend most days by the sea, fishing on a boat or hiking. Favorite playtime activity: Alfred loves playing with soccer balls or dinosaurs and running around “scaring” us. Everyday tips: Get the children involved in daily chores. Alfred loves to help with vacuuming, laundry and putting the groceries away. These situations also help build vocabulary, naming things as you go.

EACH CHILD IS DIFFERENT

Kristin’s first pregnancy went fine. She worked until her maternity leave began but confesses that it was more tiring the second time around. “When pregnant with Alfred, I could relax on the couch when I came home from work. With Henny, I had a little boy who needed attention and love. They also describe the first couple of months with each child as different. Everything was new with Alfred – and just about everything was overwhelming. “We hadn’t experienced anything before. With Henny, it is more tiring, because we have two small children, but we are more relaxed. We don’t have to be panicked by every little thing,” Kristin says.

They describe having kids as somewhat of a research project. “Ah, this worked on him or her, so then we’ll keep doing that,” Kristin says and laughs. Making dinner has been one of those learning experiences. “Alfred used to love sitting in the high chair when I was making dinner. He got to participate, without being on my arm. I love these high chairs. Henny is also a fan of being in that chair, while Alfred plays or helps me with the food. The kids feel part of what is happening, and I have my arms free to cook and clean,” Kristin says. They have a kitchen island that Alfred loves running around and no TV in the living room. → S TO K K E ® 201 8

S TOKKE® STORIES

Our expert's advice Playing = learning. Babies are born with curiosity. They want to learn and discover new things. Young children learn best when they can employ their senses – it boosts their brain activity. So, make sure to give your baby plenty of opportunities to smell, taste, feel, look and touch. Play is another great way to interact with your baby, while helping them to learn. Get on the floor for “tummy time” together and roll a ball back and forth (great for strengthening the muscles in their stomach, back and neck, as well as for eye development). Or you might play peek-a-boo games with a see-through scarf (so that the baby can still see you and not get scared). Don’t underestimate the power of play – it isn’t just fun; it’s an effective way of learning and exploring the world.

This is our STOKKE® HOME™ BED with TENT. You will find more information about our HOME CONCEPT on page 59.

In their own house, they have made room for several Stokke® products. Like most Norwegians, they remember the Tripp Trapp® chair from their own childhood.

“We keep it in a TV room – we wanted the living room to be about our time together. It works well for us,” Ørjan says. When building and creating their home, the couple focused on light, spacious areas. They decided on a calm, muted palette, with several accent walls. “We wanted rooms that we would love. We chose light colors. In our living room, we have a lovely, blue wall. Downstairs, we have a room facing our garden and chose to paint the walls green,” Kristin says. Ørjan has his own office in the house. “This way, I can work from home in the evenings, or, if I stay home with the kids, I can still get an effective and full day of work in,” he says.

Alfred is an active little boy, and most things can be used as a toy, even his bed.

ENJOYING NATURE

One element that is very important is the outdoors. “One of the best things about raising children in Norway is how close we are to nature. We spend hours outside. I love that we are so close to the city, yet feel far from the hustle and bustle,” Ørjan says. The weekends are well spent, with a more relaxed tempo than the hectic weekdays. “We usually go outside after breakfast, depending on the weather. We let our moods decide how the day will go,” he says. → S TO K K E ® 201 8

Henny is all smiles in her cradle.

Kristin and Ørjan want both Alfred and Henny to feel free to try out new things. “I think it is so important to try, test and get the sense of accomplishment. This way they can push some boundaries. It can be something as simple as trying to walk down a staircase or carrying their own backpack. When you are free to be your own person, it builds confidence,” Ørjan says. They want both kids to grow up with respect for people and their surroundings. “We want to be relaxed and open, observing while they try things out. It is part of their learning. It is better to try, fail or succeed in a safe environment, than to get thrown into things later. We want them to be respectful, but not afraid. You should respect the sea, for example, but it isn’t good to fear the sea,” he explains. The two are very connected regarding their kids’ upbringing. They love seeing the kids discovering the world around them. “Throwing a pebble in a puddle – or jumping in that puddle – everything is new and exciting. It is wonderful being there, watching Alfred and Henny experience it. Seeing these two grow up is really the greatest thing in life,” Kristin says. 28

ou’ve been in the kitchen for hours. Well, maybe you haven't been cooking for hours, but you've made the firm decision that today your little angel is going to try something new to eat. Many parents can relate to the frustration of their children not wanting to try new food, or that the first bite of the feast is spat out faster than it went in. “Ew, don’t want it!” “It is important to know that children may have to taste something up to ten times before they learn to like it,” says Food and Nutrition Counselor Britt Marlene Kåsin. “As adults, knowing this makes it easier for us to cope with a ‘yuck’ or a ‘no’. That some children can be seen as ‘picky’ can often be related to our own expectations as parents than to whether the children actually are picky,” adds Kåsin, responsible for content on matstart.no. This website has recipes for children and youths, where enjoying food and having and a sense of empowerment are the focus.

"Children may have to taste something up to ten times before they learn to like it." NATURAL SCEPTICISM “Moving from breast milk to solid food is a big change for a child. They must learn to deal with new and unknown consistencies. Learning to like new flavors is also a process that all children

must go through. Think back to when you first tasted coffee. It probably took several cups before you began to get used to it. The road to liking a strong cup of coffee usually starts with a sweet café latté, or a coffee with a good dose of milk and sugar. With this in mind, it is no wonder that children are sometimes sceptical,” says the nutrition counselor. “Coffee is bitter, and bitterness is something we are naturally cautious of. Bitter flavors, which are found in broccoli and other vegetables, are often difficult to get children to eat. It is believed this is because poisonous plants found in nature also are bitter. This is a natural caution that has remained with us through evolution,” Kåsin explains. INNATE SWEET AND SALTY CRAVINGS From the time we are born, we have a natural preference toward the basic sweet and salty tastes. Amniotic fluid in the womb is salty, and breast milk is sweet. “Salt, in the right quantities, is something the body needs. From an evolutionary perspective, it would be counterproductive if an infant didn't enjoy the sweet taste of breast milk,” says Kåsin. This might be the reason why sweet things are very popular, while other foods can be a test of patience. And patience is key for those who want to teach their children to enjoy a varied diet. “Don't give up, but don’t pressure your child to eat. If a child feels pressured, it can bring up negative emotions around the breakfast or dinner table. Food should be a natural part of the day, and children usually get what they need. Don’t worry. If your child doesn’t eat dinner, they usually make up for this by having an evening snack,” says the nutrition counselor. →

Our expert's advice Sing, read and talk to your baby as much as possible. Babies love hearing their parents’ voices. They also learn a lot from these types of interactions. For instance, this is how they begin to understand the meaning of words and sounds. In addition, they can start developing their listening skills and expanding their vocabulary. This makes these activities a great way to boost language development. Singing songs together, especially rhyming songs with simple movements, is not only fun but provides another real learning opportunity. Babies tend to remember words better that are accompanied by a melody (and better still with an action).

TIPS TO ENCOURAGE KIDS TO TRY NEW FOOD.

Did you know that children may need to taste something up to ten times before they learn to like it? Children who taste many different types of food when they are small often have a more wide and varied diet when they are older.

tas ty winners!

1. INTRODUCE YOUR CHILD TO TASTING EARLY.

Even during pregnancy, you can try to eat foods with different flavors. Breast milk can also be flavored by what the mother eats.

6. ALLOW YOUR CHILDREN IN THE KITCHEN.

Children who help prepare meals and become familiar with the food they eat are more likely to taste the food when it is served at the dinner table. Give your little one simple tasks that create a sense of empowerment and make them feel that they are participating.

8. BE PRESENT AT MEALTIME.

Create a calm and pleasant atmosphere when you eat together. It's not always an easy thing to do during your hectic days, but try. A relaxed dinner never goes out of fashion.

TOMATOES

4. CHILDREN LIKE TO DECIDE FOR THEMSELVES.

Offer healthy options for them to choose from such as sliced fruit and vegetables.

Let your child taste new flavors and textures many times. Taste and consistency are something they have to get used to. If your child refuses to taste something new, don't get frustrated. Try again in a few days.

Our children look up to us and often adopt our habits. If Dad removes the tomato from the salad, you can expect your child to do the same.

3. INTEGRATE FLAVORS.

When your child progresses to solid foods, it's a good idea to integrate different types of produce in mashes and porridges. Combine something bitter with something sweet to blend flavors with things that your children already like with something new.

5. DON´T GIVE UP.

7. BE A GOOD ROLE MODEL.

2. PREPARE THEM FOR THE FLAVORS TO COME.

Even if your child has not started on solid foods, you can get them ready for new flavors. Use a clean finger and let your child get to know flavors like tomato, apple and grape.

Set out healthy sandwich spreads they can choose to eat with breakfast. Try giving your child three healthy dinner options they can choose from to decide for themselves.

How to bathe a baby

BA BY ’ S F I R S T BAT H

When you have your first baby, one thing is for sure: your life will never be the same.

Y

The voice of experience Cliona from Ireland is a full-time Mom living in Jar, a suburb of Oslo, with her husband Derek and their five young children. With two girls, Saoirse (8) and Fiadh (6), and three boys, Donnacha (4), Senan (2) and Séimi (11 months), there is never a dull moment in this busy home!

ou now have this tiny bundle of joy that will fill your life with new experiences. No matter how well prepared you are, you will often find yourself being a little surprised or unsure about just what to do and when. You have so much to learn at the beginning. It can be overwhelming, but it’s important to know you are not alone. In fact, all these new experiences help to build the bond between you and your baby, so while you might not be that experienced, the best person to take care of your baby is you. Feeding, sleeping and diaper changes are all part of your daily routine now, but one of the things parents can become most anxious about after bringing baby home is that first bath. At the end of the day, most parents tend to want to the same thing: to make bath time more enjoyable and safe for their baby. As a mother of five children ranging from 11 months to 8 years, I’ve learned through experience. However, I still had help that first time. Before you leave the hospital, ask a nurse or care assistant to show you how to bathe your baby. Don’t assume they’ll do it automatically, as they are so busy, and they might not remember. They are there to help and will be glad to show you and give advice. Even if you are on your second or third baby, don’t be afraid to ask. It’s no harm to refresh your memory. When it comes to bath time, safety is always first. If you are ever in doubt about issues relating to the general health of your baby and bathing, please make sure to consult your physician. Bath time is a great opportunity to look for any rashes or irritation on their skin, and, during those first months, if you need reassurance or advice, don’t hesitate to ask for it. There are a lot of different opinions about bathing a baby, around the world. Some are cultural and many are personal. But, there are

some things you can do to make it enjoyable for your family. Once you are ready to bathe your baby, being prepared is one of the most important things when it comes to bathing your baby. Even now, bathing my fifth baby, I have to be super organized! Your baby’s bath should be warm, not hot. If you don’t have a bath thermometer, which most of us don’t, then use your elbow or wrist to check the temperature. Babies have sensitive skin, so this is important to get off to a happy start for your baby.

"When it comes to bath time, safety is always first." You’ll want to have all your bath-time essentials at hand, as you can’t leave your baby unattended, even for a second: the tub, a baby sponge and mild baby wash. Sometimes adding a drop of baby oil to the water helps, especially if your baby has dry skin. I usually do that at the end, once they are washed. A towel with a hood is ideal after the bath to keep your baby nice and warm. If you are super organized (which most of us aren’t!), warming up the towel can be nice, especially in the colder months. A diaper, of course, and ointment are good, if baby has a bit of a rash or irritation, which is quite common when baby is teething, for example. Having a warm room with no drafts will make it even more comfortable for your baby. If that’s not possible, washing their hair at the end will help prevent them from getting cold. →

again that’s a personal thing. In my experience, it helps them wind down and get ready for sleep, so I usually do it about an hour before bedtime. Sometimes, you can be so busy, and you might have more free time in the morning, which is perfect. You as a parent will find what works best for you and your baby. The most important thing is to make it enjoyable for you both, and the best way to do that is to plan it for when you have plenty of time. Don't rush this precious baby-bonding time.

Here are my top tips: • BE PREPARED. Reassure your baby by

maintaining eye contact, smiling and letting them hear your voice. Gather everything you need and have it within arm’s reach. You don’t want to interrupt a bath because you forgot something. • EXPECT THE UNEXPECTED. Baby might not

like bathing at first. Don’t worry if it doesn’t go smoothly in the beginning. They will adjust in time. Always keep their head well supported. Bathing baby requires your full attention, so avoid distractions. • GET OTHERS INVOLVED. My older children

Once you have everything ready, relax. This is a new experience, and your baby may respond well and relax, or they may cry. If they do, don’t worry. All babies are different, and you’ll get to know what your baby likes and doesn’t like about bath time. Sometimes, they will cry at first but often will soon relax and enjoy the experience. Personally, I think the warm water soothes them, and maintaining eye contact will make it even more special for your baby. Most babies don’t mind water being poured over their head. I wish I could say that doesn’t change, but, when mine got older, they didn’t like water in their eyes so much! How often you bathe your baby is really a personal thing. If they love it, and it helps their routine, then a couple of times a week is perfect. If your baby has particularly dry skin, then they don’t need a bath that often. Regular bathing can just dry the skin, as it can remove the natural oils. Some parents like to bathe baby before bedtime, but

love being Mommy’s little helpers! It’s a lovely memory to capture, so taking a photo or video is an excellent idea. It's amazing how fast they grow! • MAKE IT COZY. Get everything ready

beforehand and place baby into the warm water before they get cold. It can be a bit of a shock to them when the cold air hits their skin upon finishing. Wrap baby in a soft, hooded towel. Now is a perfect time for cuddles and kisses! • KEEP IT INTERESTING. Introducing some bath

toys will keep it fun and help develop hand-eye coordination too! Once baby gets a hold of something, it will go straight into their mouth. Be sure to squeeze the water from bath toys once bath time is over to keep them clean. You’ll become more confident with practice, and it will soon become a relaxing ritual for you and your baby.

STOKKE ÂŽ STORIES

Meet the family Megan Gressel, a blogger and fitness instructor, and Amit Gressel, an attorney, live in the suburbs of Los Angeles, California, with their two-and-a-half-year-old daughter, Summer, rescue pup Koshy, and are excitedly awaiting the arrival of their second daughter.

Becoming parents:

WEVE LEARNED SO MUCH Only weeks away from becoming parents again, Megan & Amit share what they've experienced with their first baby, Summer.

Advice from Mom

I

am just ten weeks away from becoming a Mom for the second time. As we get closer to the arrival of baby girl number two, I have been reflecting upon my early experiences as a first-time mom. Two and a half years ago, my husband Amit and I were eagerly awaiting the arrival of our first daughter, Summer. We had really been relishing the pregnancy and took every “baby” opportunity we could find – from taking the car seat to be checked at our local police department, to taking every birthing and breastfeeding class our hospital offered, to reading all the latest, “trendy” parenting books. While we were aware enough to know we didn’t really know what we were doing, we were also naïve enough to feel pretty darn prepared. My entire pregnancy, I felt confident and empowered by everything my body was creating, and I felt inexplicably connected to this little human I was growing. I expected motherhood to be chaotic, of course. But I also expected it to be like the pregnancy – coming somewhat naturally. And then … our sweet baby girl Summer arrived and – oh boy – did those feelings change. Despite all our preparations, nothing could have prepared me for those early weeks. I had been told over and over that I would be exhausted, overwhelmed, that breastfeeding might not come as naturally as I expected. I was warned that everything about my life would change. All that was true, but what I found the most surprising

in those early weeks was something no one had mentioned at all – I was finding it more challenging to bond with my beautiful, new baby girl than expected. People would call and congratulate us and chirp happily over the phone, “You must be so over the moon!” or “I bet you’ve never felt love like this, right?” It was all said with such joy and cheer, everyone was congratulating us, but the truth was that, while I did feel overwhelming love and happiness about our new baby, I also felt emotionally and physically drained. When I looked at her, I absolutely knew I loved every ounce of her, but the contrast of that connection I had felt while she was in my womb was stark when compared to what a stranger she seemed out here in the real world. That ooey gooey feeling everyone expected me to have – I wasn’t quite having. In addition to love for her, I also felt a wave of confusion – this beautiful little person was with me every moment of every day, yet I felt I knew nothing about her – she felt so far away. Those early weeks at home, I’d look at my husband Amit, who I had been together with for 10 years, and I felt such comfort and warmth. Amit and I had a decade of shared experiences, inside jokes, and a deep understanding of one another that brought me incredible security. Our relationship felt warm and safe. In looking at him, I realized (realistically or not) that I had expected a similar and immediate warmth and comfort with my baby girl. But, when I looked at her, my fears and insecurities bubbled up – did I have what it takes to nurture this perfect little human? This perfect little stranger? →

5 tips from Mom : 1. Be gentle with yourself. Motherhood is unique for everyone. Your emotions are valid and real. Honor and process them, but never judge yourself. 2. Wave your white flag. Ask for help from family and friends or, if necessary, delivery services, dog walkers, counselors, and hired sitters. We all need a hand sometimes, whether dealing with everyday logistics or emotional support. Taking care of yourself allows you to focus on connecting with your baby. 3. Nurture your partnership. While date nights may be unrealistic (although if you can, you should!), try to set aside time with your partner. Creating a sense of normalcy – even if it is just sushi and wine on the sofa – helps everything run a little smoother. 4. Slow it way down. With Summer, I kept my usual pace; I wish I had lived in the moment more. This time, I intend to savor our first moments. * Skin-to-skin time: This is scientifically shown to help with bonding. I was spending every ounce of every day with this new baby, yet she felt so foreign. The juxtaposition of expectation and reality was hitting me hard – and I felt deeply guilty. It sounds so hyperbolic now, but, in those early weeks, I wondered if I would ever feel that deep intense connection to my baby that I had anticipated. Things didn’t get easier overnight; they happened slowly. Summer and I started to get the hang of breastfeeding. She started sleeping more reliably. She started smiling – oh the days and weeks in which she began to smile and giggle were so huge for us. It was just the positive feedback I had been craving – longing to know I wasn’t totally failing at this. When she was four months’ old, we took her on our first little family trip to Ojai, California. We got her into the pool for the first time, and it was like a spark had been ignited inside her. She couldn’t stop cooing, giggling, smiling, splashing, and just engaging with us in a way she never had before. It was such a distinct moment for our family – for the first time, I think we all felt like we really truly knew each other. Looking at sweet Summer made me feel warm and safe. Even thinking back to that trip now, I get a little overwhelmed, it was such a positive shift from where we had been just weeks before. As we settle into these final few weeks as a family of three, before we meet our next baby girl, I have been thinking back to this time a lot. Going into this birth feels entirely different. On the one hand, I am more anxious than the first time around – I now know what a learning curve there is to adding a new team member to the family. On the other hand, I feel extremely confident, because this time I know that every challenge, every seemingly impossible moment, every doubt – those are all phases. If the bond doesn’t feel present right away, I have no doubts it will come. With that blend of anxiety, confidence, and pregnancy hormones, I want to share my five tips for finding your bond with baby in those early weeks and months.

Advice from dad s the first of my friends to enter into parenthood, I get asked a lot, “Has becoming a dad changed your life?” Undoubtedly. But not in the ways I might have thought. My interests haven’t changed. My personality is the same. Although, I have been to a lot more kids’ birthday parties than I would have ever anticipated. The real change, though, is that my goals are different – I’m most focused on providing a loving home and childhood for my daughters, over anything else. Before our older daughter, Summer, was born, I wondered how much my life would change. Would I still be interested in the same books or movies? Would my goals at work change? The truth was that becoming a dad was both a dramatic change, while also feeling completely normal. When you bring your first child home, you are the exact same person you were three days beforehand, just with a new roommate – and a lot more responsibility. Some things did change of course, and some life changes came quicker than others. For example, the lack of sleep everyone warns you about? That was one that came quickly. And, while the lack of sleep you get with a new baby is anticipated, it’s still more challenging than anyone can prepare you for – when you’re tired, everything becomes much harder. Other changes came on a little more gradually. For example, an ongoing challenge for me is that I am constantly learning (and re-learning) how to balance my home life and work life. Some weeks, I am busier at work and able to do less at home – which means less able to help support my wife, Megan, and less able to spend quality time with Summer. Other weeks, I have plenty of free time to build blocks, head to the park, and tackle the →

and allow your breathing to sync. * Baby-wearing to bond: Try baby-wearing. Being bundled up to mom or dad builds closeness – and keeps your hands free. *Family time: Last time, we had visitors coming and going. The help is super, but you need space to bond, too. I am looking forward to going on walks or reading together – Summer has already picked the books that she wants to share with her sister. 5. Don’t try to keep up with the Joneses. On social media, new moms may seem to have it all together, with their hair perfect, homes pristine and babies content. But no one escapes those early days unscathed. Don’t let staged perfection distract you from the perfect chaos in your own home.

5 tips from Dad 1. Take over for a day (or a weekend). When we were home together, I noticed there were times Megan was still doing more to take care of Summer. My solution was to plan a day that I took over. Megan would leave, and Summer and I spent the day together. I took her hiking, out to lunch and to the park. Nothing sparks bonding like making new experiences together, just the two of you. 2. Develop routines. At least one morning every weekend, Summer and I take out her blocks and build intricate structures and mini-cities. Summer will tell me to “build the stairs” or “build a fountain”, and I’ll do my best to construct something. Whatever I can’t build, her imagination fills in. school dropoff. So, for me, a big change was just learning to roll with the punches and adjusting my schedule (and my expectations) as life came at me. A helpful realization that came with parenthood was learning that a rigid schedule is not always a realistic way of maintaining that balance. Knowing that sometimes I need to work late and can’t put Summer to bed, while other times I can take a morning off to take her to dance class, has allowed me the flexibility and confidence not to feel burdened if I miss bedtime one night or get a little less work done the next morning. At the end of the day, the most important thing for me is that I spend quality time with Summer and Megan, whether on a walk, at home coloring or on a family trip. Then, there have been changes that have reshaped the way I tackle life alltogether. Over time, becoming a Dad has changed the way I approach problems

"At the end of the day, the most important thing for me is that I spend quality time with Summer and Megan." and activities. I have learned that I need to model the behaviors I want my children to learn. So much of raising a thoughtful, intelligent person requires that she sees thoughtful, intelligent role models. Little kids are like sponges, and they are always picking up new behaviors and skills. If that sounds like a lot to watch for, it is! But, it’s also a lot of fun. Megan and I have made a conscious effort to model patience in everyday struggles in the hopes that Summer will also learn to patiently persist through her own development. Getting to see Summer try a new skill, struggle with it and ultimately master it is a blast (although there are definitely some tantrums along the way!). And, the more she develops and learns, the more I get to see the other 42

fun, little traces of my personality and the behavior I have modeled come out in her. I don’t know if the fact that she makes the same face that I do when she drinks water and then says “Ahhhh” is learned by watching me do that or was passed on by biology – either way it is really fun to watch. Perhaps the biggest change that I have learned is that I need to expect the unexpected. What I mean is that, with kids, you never know what will come up – some days, Summer may wake up sick and need to go to the doctor. Other days, she simply wakes up and no longer likes the breakfast smoothie she has always enjoyed or has decided that particular day she no longer has an interest in wearing pants. Being a Dad means constantly being flexible, which also means that I need to do as much as I can to leave my time open to be flexible. If I have not taken care of my professional or personal responsibilities, it becomes a lot more difficult to accommodate the unexpected. All of these changes, on top of the changes your partner is experiencing, can make the initial weeks and months of fatherhood challenging. I remember thinking in the first few months that it can be difficult as the Dad to bond with a new baby. I remember during Megan’s first pregnancy noting to myself that not a whole lot had changed for me. My body was not changing in any way, and, when I was out and about, I looked exactly the same – no one commented on my appearance, asked me questions or tried to touch my stomach. In short, I was treated the same as always, and this impacted how I felt. But, even after Summer was born, there were similar difference in our parenting challenges, other moments that as a dad I didn’t experience. When Megan was breastfeeding, there was a limit to what I could help with and the ways I could comfort our new baby. Then, just as Summer started smiling and connecting more, I went back to work. With that in mind, I had to find other ways to connect with our new baby that I’d like to share.

two of us has been important for developing a strong bond from the start. When she was really little, I was the resident expert swaddler, so, in the middle of the night, I would swaddle her and stay up with her until she'd fall back asleep. 3. Wear your baby. For the first six months of Summer’s life, we didn't wear her much. But, once we got the hang of it, we wore her constantly. Summer loved it, because she was always attached to us. It freed up our hands, while keeping her close. In fact, for months, Summer would only nap if she was strapped into her carrier and could fall asleep on us. It was a great way to bond and very convenient for everything from working around the house to going on walks. 4. Take time for yourself. Babies are finely attuned to our emotions and energy. If you’re run ragged or stressed, they’ll know. Trying to bond with your child when you’re at your wits’ end won’t be enjoyable for either of you. Early on, Megan started forcing me out of the house to run. I’d come back relaxed, a little healthier and a whole lot happier. Find your thing and make time to do it. When you jump back in, you’ll be better for it. 5. Be patient! If your bond doesn't feel strong instantly, just know it takes time. Kids change their habits and preferences. Even though I’ve been bonded with Summer, she often prefers Megan. Until, that is, she started going swimming. Something about that made her want to hang out with me. (Maybe it’s all the times I threw her up in the air.) Be patient and present and – the rest will fall into place, naturally.
