a
Healthy Future As you move through the pages of this annual report, you’ll find tributes to people and programs that have helped the Stollery Children’s Hospital Foundation grow its support for the benefit of children. There are more outstanding stories than there are pages in the report, so we encourage you to subscribe to our new Hero magazine and to tap into our web site to learn more about the exciting growth taking place.

With the population growth in Alberta alone, the need for support at the Stollery Children’s Hospital and for its many complementary programs is also growing. Donors have again stepped forward and recognized that it is only through their support that we can meet the need, anticipate needs to come, support the growth, and provide for the rapidly changing field of technology. We want to thank all of the donors who have made the 2010/2011 fiscal year at the Foundation a financial success in helping children. Coupled with this success is the clear acknowledgement that there is no greater wealth than our health. We will continue to do our best in creating the opportunity for all children to live healthy, happy lives.

A Growing Population The need for support continues to grow each year as the number of babies grows locally, provincially and nationally. There are more than 1.7 million children in the Stollery Children’s Hospital’s catchment area – the largest of any pediatric facility in Canada. Children from across Canada come to the Stollery for help; the primary areas being Alberta, northern BC, Saskatchewan, Manitoba, the Northwest Territories, Nunavut, and the Yukon.

A Growing Understanding Fund Raising Pillar: Research and Education Dr. Piush Mandhane, at the Stollery Children’s Hospital, is currently seeking the answers to the causes of asthma and allergies. Diagnosed with asthma at the age of three, Dr. Mandhane understands the importance of researching the environmental factors that are unique to our geographic region. Incidents of asthma in Canada have grown 35 per cent in the last five years. Its symptoms can be frightening for children and adults who suddenly experience the inability to draw a clear breath. Dr. Mandhane recently brought the Canadian Healthy Infant Longitudinal Development (CHILD) study to Edmonton. Starting before birth, the children of the CHILD study are tested by Dr. Mandhane and his team for things such as genetics, 4
general blood chemistry, and a complete profile of their living conditions, including home inspection, is captured. Biological samples are collected at specific intervals along the way and then stored for future as-yet-unimagined testing. From the 5,000 children being studied nationally, 600 local children are part of the project. The Canadian Mortgage and Housing Corporation is providing in-kind support in the form of training personnel to complete home inspections, because the resulting information can be used to improve building design standards. Environment Canada is also on board to provide exterior environmental data about the sites and is committed to helping CHILD interpret that data without additional cost. Recruiters for the CHILD study work together with several other research projects to assess suitability and maximize research participation in all available studies.
Growing Hospital Priorities The partnerships created for CHILD, and the far-reaching effects on our long-term health and well being, are almost as impossible to fully understand as they are inspiring. Although Dr. Mandhane’s project is ambitious, he will continue to study the immense volume of data being collected. “It’s a case of knowing that all this information is going to provide answers,” he says, “I love what I do. I get to ask questions – and I get to answer them myself. That’s not something everyone is lucky enough to be able to do. In research we don’t get the semi-immediate gratification of clinical work, instead we go through 11 months of frustration for one month of ‘Wow!’” The Stollery Children’s Hospital Foundation will continue to raise funds to support important research such as this, and many other essential research projects.
Fund Raising Pillar: Innovative Programs Nine-year-old Jed Calhoun Rutter spent months at the Stollery Children’s Hospital, with weeks on life support in the pediatric intensive care unit. “His surgeons and pediatrician saved his life, and the nurses at the hospital tended to him around the clock,” said Jed’s mom Karen. This year, Jed was the grand marshal of our 8th Annual Walmart Walk for Miracles. Not only did Jed lead the walk of 300 participants along the 5km course, he also led Edmonton in donations! That’s right. Young Jed raised more than $6,500, placing him third across Canada! The money Jed raised will help fund the growing list of priorities at the hospital.
Important priorities, such as: • A Wi-Fi connection – Thanks to this new connection, Stollery families and patients are now able to stay connected to their friends, family, school and work without having to leave their hospital room. • The Family Talks Program – This collaboration between families and physicians gives family speakers a platform to share their knowledge through storytelling. The program is an initiative of the Stollery’s Family Centred Care Council, which links families with staff and physicians to collaborate and nurture leadership.
• Northern Alberta Pediatric Sleep Program – A program that investigates and treats children with sleeping disorders, such as apnea, narcolepsy, restless leg syndrome and behavioural sleep disorders. Today, Jed is a happy, healthy and busy boy. He ski races, rides on horse-back, swims, and water skis. And, he’s excited to continue supporting important priorities at the hospital that saved his life.

Growing Fund Raisers
Growing into a new Emergency Department
Fund Raising Pillar: Equipment and Technology How many 20 year olds do you know who have raised close to $800,000 for charity?
talk. He also underwent three more brain surgeries to fully remove the tumour.
Fund Raising pillar: Infrastructure Excellence
We know one for sure. Braden Mole.
Throughout his time in hospital, Braden met many other children who were going through their own, sometimes greater, challenges.
The Stollery Children’s Hospital’s current emergency department was built to handle 11,000 patients annually. Today, it sees more than double that number with 27,700 patients coming through the doors annually.
Braden started fund raising with bottle and penny drives. Now, he organizes an annual barbeque that raises funds for the Stollery Children’s Hospital Foundation. This year, Braden amazed everyone by raising more than $122,000 at his event! Braden’s drive to help the Stollery is neverending. When Braden was eight years old, after a series of seizures, he underwent a routine brain surgery to remove his right temporal lobe. During surgery, an unexpected surge of blood led surgeons to discover a large tumour growing on an artery. While they attempted to control the bleeding, Braden suffered a stroke on his left side. Braden survived and spent four months in recovery re-learning how to walk and 6
“I made a promise that as long as this hospital is standing, I will continue my efforts to raise funds and give back to the hospital that has given so much to me,” said Braden. Braden’s money has funded three operating room tables, an MP30 Monitor, Dermatone Blades and an X-ray machine. The number of community fund raisers continues to grow each year. Last year, there were 234 community initiatives, raising more than $1.1 million for the Stollery Children’s Hospital Foundation.
Fund raising for a new pediatric emergency is critical. Fifteen-year-old-twins Cole and Serena Johnson understand the vital need for a new pediatric emergency. They were born prematurely and both used the Stollery Children’s Hospital. In Cole’s first year of life, doctors said he only had a five per cent chance of survival. Cole was in and out of the Stollery’s pediatric intensive care unit with lung,
stomach and intestinal issues, and has undergone seven surgeries. In addition to representing the Stollery through ATB Financial’s Teddy for a Toonie campaign, Cole introduced the campaign to his school. All of the money Cole’s school raised benefitted the emergency expansion campaign. The support of Cole, his school and ATB will help to ensure
the new pediatric emergency will have the specialized equipment and technology available and will be completely child friendly. Construction on the new emergency department is being completed in two phases to ensure continued operation during construction and to optimize available resources. The first phase of the emergency department expansion is expected to open in winter 2012, with phase 2 opening in the spring of 2012.

Growing Support of Volunteers
Growing Partnerships
This year, we saw more than 600 volunteers support us, plus an increase in volunteers who participated in more than one role. We also saw growth in volunteers taking on more responsibility.
As a proud member of Children’s Miracle Network, the Stollery Children’s Hospital Foundation is honoured to work with a growing number of amazing national partners.
We simply could not do what we do without the help of volunteers. They helped us at dozens of events, in the office, at our community events, answering phones, and being of great support whenever and wherever asked to contribute. To each and every one of our Miracle Workers…thank you!
Children’s Miracle Network is a non-profit organization dedicated to saving and improving the lives of sick and injured kids in local communities. It raises funds for more than 170 children’s hospitals – 14 of which are in Canada. We’re also proud to work with numerous local, provincial and national corporate donors. Their support through sponsorships, goods and services, campaigns and donations is unparalleled. A special thanks to each of our national sponsors and corporate donors for making a difference in the lives of children.
