Together, We Are The Stollery What a remarkable year we’ve shared! Our donors raised a record $23.3 million in 2014/15 – an increase of five per cent from last year – to transform children’s health care in our community and beyond. Our donors share in the many recent successes at the Hospital, including the opening of a state-of-theart ophthalmology clinic; the introduction of a pet therapy pilot project; Dr. Wine’s innovative research into inflammatory bowel diseases; and, the Hospital’s advanced training for 24 new doctors by renowned Stollery experts like pulmonary hypertension specialist, Dr. Adatia. Perhaps nowhere was the impact of our donors more evident than in the 2014 opening of the Stollery’s Edmonton Oilers Ambulatory Clinic, made possible with $2.5 million in donor funding to complete phase one of our Critical for Care campaign. This exceptional facility gives young patients access to 40 clinic outpatient services under one roof, allowing children access to multiple specialists during a single visit. The need for life-saving care at the Stollery Children’s Hospital is enormous. Every year, the Hospital responds to more than 215,000 patient visits from across Alberta and Western Canada – and the number continues to grow. Our community has outgrown our Hospital’s facilities. As we enter the third year of our five-year Critical for Care campaign, we need your help more than ever to raise the remaining $12.5 million needed to expand and redevelop the Stollery’s operating rooms and intensive care units. Together, we can make sure our community’s sickest kids and their families receive the world-class care they deserve. On behalf of Stollery kids and their families, thank you for your tremendous generosity.

Embracing a work-hard-and-give-back attitude, the team of 550 tradespeople at WorleyParsonsCord, a local module assembly yards company, has given more than $64,000 to our Foundation since 2007. Adding a fundraising component to every staff barbecue, golf tournament, team-building event and Christmas party, employees generously donate their time and money to help Stollery kids and their families get the world-class care they need.

Ophthalmology Clinic With $550,000 in funding from generous donors like you, the Stollery opened its renovated, state-of-the-art ophthalmology clinic in spring 2015. “What we had was very old and dated,” says Stollery ophthalmologist Dr. Carlos Eduardo Solarte.

The upgrades to the clinic’s physical space, network and equipment mean patients benefit from a clinic that presents the highest standard of care, and ophthalmology students benefit from a world-class teaching facility. “We have become a centre of excellence for Northern Canada,” says Dr. Solarte. “Now, when I see a patient, I can do a very precise diagnosis and teach at the same time.”

$550,000 DONOR DOLLARS

Serdachny Power Skating and Hockey founder Steve Serdachny created the Stollery Family Day Classic to foster philanthropy and a spirit of giving in young people. His tournament, which features 82 hockey teams from across Alberta, has raised $1.4 million for the Stollery since 2011 – including $375,000 in 2014 for the ophthalmology clinic.

Equipment and Facilities – $5,962,000 The body is incredibly complex. As miraculous and amazing as the systems that give us life are, so too are they challenging and puzzling when something is out of alignment. We fund state-of-the-art equipment and customized facilities designed for pediatric care to help the specialists at the Stollery treat the most complex of children’s illnesses and injuries. As part of the Government of Alberta’s investment to expand critical care services at the Stollery – and with $2.5 million in support from our generous donors – the Hospital opened its Edmonton Oilers Ambulatory Clinic in October 2014. The clinic serves as a shining example of the difference donor dollars make for our community’s sickest children and their families.

153,000

Edmonton Oilers Ambulatory Clinic Many Stollery patients – from infancy to adolescence – need years of regular consultation, diagnosis, treatment and care from dedicated health care teams. The demand for specialized ambulatory (outpatient) care and treatment programs at the Stollery continues to grow. In fact, outpatient services at the Hospital are the most significant contributor to pediatric patient volume, with 153,000 patient visits in 2014/15. Before the expansion of the clinic, the Stollery had stretched resources and maximized its ambulatory space. The previous five specialty clinics used all 14 exam rooms at capacity. Today, facility upgrades and additional state-of-the-art equipment at the ambulatory clinic have allowed the Hospital to meet increasing demands for services and greatly improve the quality of patient care. With access to specialists from 40 clinic services under one roof, more kids are returning home sooner due to improved treatment at the $15.8 million, state-of-the-art Edmonton Oilers Ambulatory Clinic.

What does it take to open a world-class ambulatory clinic? It takes the generosity of donors like you, and major gifts from supporters like the Edmonton Oilers Community Foundation and the Stollery Charitable Foundation. Continuing the legacy of Dr. Robert Stollery and his wife Shirley, the Stollery Charitable Foundation gifted $500,000 towards our five-year Critical for Care campaign to support expansion and major improvements of the Hospital’s ambulatory clinic, and future upgrades to operative services and intensive care units.

“This beautiful new facility is the place where we find the people we trust with our daughter’s life and the place we find hope for the future.” Michelle Childs, Elina’s mom

Elina Childs Age 6 Shortly after birth, Elina was diagnosed with cystic fibrosis, an incurable genetic disease. Now six years old, Elina visits the Edmonton Oilers Ambulatory Clinic every three months. What does the new clinic mean to Elina and her family? In mom Michelle’s words, “The biggest difference we see is more clinic rooms, which means less chance of Elina being cross-infected from sitting in the waiting room. All the medical staff come to us; we see a doctor, nurse, dietician and physiotherapist in one place.” 7

Research – $3,150,000 Through funding to organizations like the Women and Children’s Health Research Institute (WCHRI), we support research backed by evidence-based practice that affects Stollery kids and their families. The Foundation recognizes the tremendous impact that research has on disease prevention, treatment and improved health outcomes, which is why we invested $30 million over 10 years (2006-2016) – including more than $3.1 million in 2014/15 – to support WCHRI’s mission of transforming the health of children and women through supporting research excellence. The Foundation funded 135 WCHRI research grants in 2014/15, of which 80 were trainee and student awards.

Inflammatory Bowel Diseases The incidence of inflammatory bowel diseases (IBD) in children has increased dramatically over the last 50 years and Dr. Eytan Wine wants to know why. For five years, the Israeli-born and trained pediatric gastroenterologist has taken on the role of clinician and scientist at the Stollery, working “bench to bedside” to help kids with IBD. With Drs. Hien Huynh and Matthew Carroll, Dr. Wine follows hundreds of children across Western Canada through the specialized, multidisciplinary IBD clinic at the Stollery. Spending up to 75 per cent of his time in the lab, Dr. Wine and his colleagues focus their studies on bacteria in the gut, working to determine whether the organisms are a marker for IBD or a cause of it. “There’s a lot of interest in probiotics and fecal transplantation – various treatments where changing the bacteria can help with IBD,” Dr. Wine explains. “The next steps in the lab are to identify which bacteria have the potential to cause harm, and which individuals have these bacteria. Then we can develop tools to see which patients will respond to these treatments.” While low weight, poor growth and anemia commonly go along with IBD, patients in need of steroids also have to face the possibility of bone disease. “It can be a vicious cycle of inflammation and hospital visits, especially when first diagnosed,” explains Dr. Wine.

It all started with Ayaan Meghji’s first birthday, when his parents Naida and Rahim asked for cash donations to benefit the Stollery instead of gifts. Nine-year-old Ayaan and his seven-year-old brother Kalen were both premature babies who spent time at the Stollery. Now, giving back to the Hospital has become a part of this family’s life. Last summer, Ayaan and Kalen organized a lemonade stand that raised an incredible $1,289 to help us invest in world-class equipment and facilities, programs, training and research to help Stollery kids.

“Without the Stollery, there’d be no Ben ... they have been with us every step of the way.” Tania Woodlock, Ben’s mom

Ben Woodlock Age 6 During an ultrasound before Ben was born, doctors discovered he had kidney problems. Fortunately, Ben was able to receive a kidney transplant from his dad, Patrick. Thanks to the care Ben receives at the Stollery, he is living each day to the fullest. Now six years old, he takes swimming and skating lessons and plays soccer. Chosen as the Stollery Children’s Hospital Foundation 2014/15 Champion Child, presented by Walmart, Ben represented our Foundation at events throughout the year. Ben continues to get the world-class care he needs during his visits to the renal clinic in the Edmonton Oilers Ambulatory Clinic every three months. 9

Training – $1,320,000 The people behind the equipment and the research at the Stollery Children’s Hospital make a huge difference to every patient and family member who walks through its halls. Donations to our Foundation fund programs and fellowships designed to attract and provide advanced training for the world’s brightest medical minds.

Surgical Training The Stollery’s reputation as a global leader — and more than $1 million in support from donors like you — made it possible for the department of pediatrics to recruit and provide surgical training for 24 medical residents and fellows in 2014/15. Pediatric trainees come to the Stollery from every continent on the planet to learn from world-class experts like Dr. Ian Adatia. Dr. Adatia, medical lead for the pediatric pulmonary hypertension service at the Stollery and professor of pediatrics at the University of Alberta, has mentored more than 30 trainees and currently supervises eight others. A recognized expert in his field, Dr. Adatia developed the first pediatric pulmonary hypertension clinic in North America, trained the first nurse practitioner to work in this field in Canada and is now training a nurse practitioner for his own clinic at the Stollery. Thanks to generous gifts from our donors, nurse practitioner Jennifer Keis joined the pulmonary hypertension team in February 2015 to help care for the more than 100 patients in the clinic. This role, Dr. Adatia says, helps “bring comprehensive pulmonary hypertension care directly to the child and family.”

With the Hospital’s world-class specialists, researchers, care teams and trainees pushing the limits even further in striving for excellence, the Stollery’s pulmonary hypertension clinic now has five- to 10-year survival rates among the best in the world. “This is a huge improvement from what it used to be. PULMONARY HYPERTENSION In the ‘80s the median survival was eight months,” says Dr. Adatia.

As the third-generation president of MacLachlan & Mitchell Homes, Micheal Webb credits his philanthropic dad, Ken Webb, with instilling the desire in him to give back to the community. Micheal and his family give their time and treasure – including $550,000 since 2011 in personal donations and funds raised through Mac & Mitch Homes – to support excellence at the Stollery. Mac & Mitch Homes has provided the title sponsorship for Snowflake Gala for the past three years, which in 2014/2015 funded leading-edge training for the Hospital’s remarkable staff. 10

“Dr. Adatia has taught me never to give up on a patient and that nothing is impossible.” Dr. Shine Kumar, clinical research fellow

Madison Berube Age 10 Madison is currently living with a left ventricular assistive device – a mechanical pump that’s used to support heart function and blood flow. Thanks to your generosity, our Foundation funds leading-edge training programs and fellowships designed to attract skilled professionals in pediatric cardiac surgery, organ transplantation and neurosciences. 11

Reid Skogan Age 7 Reid was an active, healthy seven year old until he contracted an invasive virus in June 2014. After a massive stroke during surgery in September, he could barely move his left side. Reid must wear a ventricular assist device to help his heart function properly. But the device, which he stows in a backpack, never gets in the way of his sessions with Stollery pet therapy dog Kya who’s helping Reid get his range of movement back.

“We have seen kids refuse to leave their bed, and we bring the dog in and suddenly they are sitting up.” 12

Melody Duncan, child life specialist

Programs - $506,000 Through funding to the Family Centred Care Council, we’re helping create programs and positions that fully integrate the family into every child’s care. Programs that place parents on the hiring boards, in doctor and nurse training sessions, and in design groups that help the Stollery build functional, family-friendly spaces. This year, we directed $506,000 in donor dollars to family centred programs in the areas of aboriginal child health, music therapy, bereavement support, father involvement support and pet therapy.

Pet Therapy It’s no secret that pets can be the right medicine when a family member is unwell. At least that’s the thinking behind the successful pilot pet therapy program that started in September 2014 at the Stollery. “The aim is to help the socialemotional-physical-cognitive functioning of the patient,” explains Melody Duncan, child life specialist at the Stollery. “The dogs would work with somebody who maybe is having some difficulty getting out of bed and we would help them with the mobility factor.”

68

PATIENTS IN FIRST 2 MONTHS

Visits with canine caregivers Kya and Tikka last about half an hour and may include the dogs sitting by a child’s bed, being petted or brushed, or accompanying patients to tests or X-rays. Demand for visits is increasing, with pet therapy impacting 68 patients in the first two months of the program.

$30K PILOT PROJECT

100% POSITIVE FEEDBACK

The pilot program, which was funded through $30,000 in directed donations from Dr. Ray Muzyka and Leona De Boer via our Foundation, has been fetching rave reviews from patients’ families. “All of the evaluation forms and feedback that we have gotten back have been 100 per cent positive,” Melody says. “It’s basically another tool, another intervention alongside the medicine. It all helps in the healing.”

Recognizing family centred care as a vital component to the well-being of children at the Stollery, Calgary-based Pembina Pipeline Corporation committed $100,000 over five years to support family centred programming at the Stollery. With more than 40 per cent of Stollery patients coming from outside the Edmonton region, Pembina’s generous donation will make a substantial impact for children and families throughout central and northern Alberta. 13

Together, our impact reaches far beyond Edmonton A hub for pediatric cardiac surgery and organ transplants, more than 40 per cent of patients treated at the Stollery live outside Edmonton, including many from British Columbia, Saskatchewan, Manitoba, the Yukon, Northwest Territories and Nunavut. The Stollery Children’s Hospital is the only specialized pediatric health care facility in central and northern Alberta. The Hospital serves one of the largest catchment areas in the world – a geographic range of more than 440,000 square kilometres.

Where Our Donor Dollars Come From Donations from our generous supporters come from four main sources, including annual support, major gifts, special events and planned giving.

Annual Support

Major Gifts

We use direct mail campaigns and annual appeals like Stollery Week and Corus Radiothon to communicate with our donors on a regular basis about urgent needs at the Stollery Children’s Hospital. Donations from these campaigns and appeals often go towards our Direct Impact Fund – undesignated funds that give our Foundation the flexibility to meet the Stollery’s most urgent needs.

A $10 million gift from Dr. Robert Stollery and his wife Shirley was the catalyst for a dedicated children’s hospital in Edmonton. Like the late Bob and Shirley, our major gift givers are visionaries who strive to transform children’s health care with donations that support specific equipment and facilities, programs, research and training that enable the Stollery to provide world-class care.

$124.5M RAISED SINCE 2009

Special Events

Each year, our special events create the kinds of memorable opportunities for generosity that our donors deserve. By attending our events, donating auction items, providing sponsorships and donating at our events, our supporters make it possible for us to fund excellence at the Stollery. In addition, community fundraisers organize more than 600 events each year to benefit the Stollery – an incredible testament to our community’s passion and support for our Hospital.

Planned Giving

A planned gift to our Foundation enables donors to make a long-term commitment to transforming children’s health today and in the future – a lasting statement of their generosity and care for their community. Planned gifts – including tributes in honour or in memory of loved ones, endowments, bequests in wills and gifts from annuities, life insurance policies and pensions – fund the Hospital’s most urgent needs and its long-term goals.

Held for the Hospital $9.9 M

Since 2009, we have provided more than $60.5 million to the Hospital. As of March 31, 2015, we are holding $30.9 million for the Hospital, which we have committed to five funding priorities: equipment and facilities, programs, training, research and measured outcomes.

2015/16 committed funds

Delays in spending from the Stollery Children’s Hospital and Alberta Health Services happen for a number of reasons. For example, delays in infrastructure projects can lead to delays in buying equipment, starting programs and carrying out research. And, delays in buying equipment can result from the Hospital testing the performance and suitability of equipment to make sure the Foundation buys the best state-of-the-art equipment possible for children’s health care.

In 2014, we launched the Stollery Women’s Network to harness the expertise and leadership of women in our community as ambassadors for the Stollery. Its 300 volunteer members meet at events with Hospital administrators and doctors to learn about urgent needs at the Stollery. In addition to raising awareness, this fierce group of advocates is working to raise $500,000 for an operating room at the Hospital.

Stollery Youth Philanthropy Ambassadors Since 2013, a dynamic group of youth aged nine to 19 have volunteered their time to raise awareness and funds for the Stollery. In 2014/15, they created videos and used social media to share their philanthropy stories and inspire youth to become leaders in their community. In 2014, they raised $23,000 for the Stollery through the Mike Weir Miracle Golf Drive for Kids – Miracle Junior Tournament.

Children’s Miracle Network Our Foundation is a proud member of Children’s Miracle Network (CMN), a nonprofit organization dedicated to saving and improving the lives of kids by raising funds for 170 children’s hospitals – 14 of which are in Canada. The funds raised through CMN programs stay local, and amount to 20 per cent of our Foundation’s annual donations. Our CMN relationship brings with it more than 30 special partnerships with national corporate partners. Our sincere thanks go to the sponsors and donors who helped us raise more than $3.6 million in 2014/15 to transform children’s health care. In our proud partnership with CMN, our Foundation ranked second overall in North America in per capita fundraising in markets of one to three million people.

Brickley Bear

CMN Award

Costco

The Brick launched its first Brickley Bear campaign on October 1, 2014. A relationship cultivated by our Foundation for CMN, the Brick raised $450,000 nationally in its first year, including more than $100,000 for the Stollery.

In 2014, we proudly received CMN’s 2014 Foundation Team of the Year Award. With 170 hospital foundations in attendance, CMN presented the award to our Foundation at its CMN Momentum Celebration in Orlando, Florida.

Each May, Costco stores in northern Alberta raise money for the Stollery through paper balloon purchases. In 2014/15 the stores raised more than $670,000, with Costco Canada generously matching 15 per cent of the funds.

DQ Miracle Treat Day

Extra Life Edmonton

TD Month of Miracles

Sales from DQ Blizzards have raised more than $3 million for our Foundation since 2001 – including more than $720,000 in 2014 – making DQ our top corporate partner. For the past four years, Sherwood Park DQ has ranked #1 in Canada for Blizzard sales.

The Extra Life Edmonton fundraiser for CMN is a 24-hour marathon video game bonanza where participants raise money for the Stollery. With more than 600 participants, the 2014 event raised more than $138,000, making Edmonton second in Canada for top fundraisers.

TD’s annual campaign raised $592,000 for our Foundation in 2014. TD clients, employees and friends raised funds for the Stollery through grassroots fundraisers and monthly giving campaigns. TD Canada Trust celebrated its 20th anniversary as a CMN partner in 2014. 19

Board of Trustees

Some of the most influential and committed community leaders in Alberta help the Stollery Children’s Hospital Foundation govern its mission and vision effectively to build the best children’s hospital in the world. The volunteer board of trustees for our Foundation consists of 18 trustees and four ex officio members. The board’s primary function is to ensure the Foundation achieves its goals and objectives within its annual strategic plan. In other words, it helps construct the road map for what’s possible today and in the future. We are extremely grateful for the vision, dedication and passion that each member brings to our board.
