2001 The journey begins!
Curbing Bicycle-Related Injuries Injuries are the leading cause of death and disability for children and teens and the leading cause of hospitalization and emergency room visits in Alberta. In 2001, the Stollery Children’s Hospital Foundation provided funding to assist KIDSAFE Connection in addressing the high number of bicycle-related injuries suffered by youth. KIDSAFE Connection, along with other injury prevention stakeholders in Alberta, worked diligently over nearly a decade to secure bike helmet legislation for the province. Today, there is a law that all cyclists under 18 years of age wear an approved bicycle helmet and applies to both riders and passengers, including children in bicycle trailers. Now, the former Kidsafe Alberta program is part of the Alberta Health Services Provincial Injury Prevention Team. The team’s priority areas are the three leading causes of injuries and deaths in Alberta: transportation, falls and suicidal behaviour. Kidsafe is making a difference to children across Canada through its education programs.

Celebrating Milestones
Richard Hiron, Chair
In the realm of children’s hospitals, we’re considered a baby. It’s hard to believe how much we have accomplished in just 10 years!
2
We started advocating for a children’s hospital in 1978 as the Northern Alberta Children’s Hospital Foundation and there were several transitions through the years, but it wasn’t until October 2001 that we could proudly boast of dedicated space, physicians, nurses, clinicians, equipment, and programs and created the Stollery Children’s Hospital. We knew from the beginning that this could be no ordinary hospital; that it would need to be a centre of excellence because that’s what our children deserve. Through our donors, volunteers and supporters, we have created some of the best children’s health care in the world. We felt it was important to celebrate and share just a few of the numerous spectacular stories from our brief ten-year history within this annual report. Thank you to all of our donors for helping to create this legacy.

KidCLOT Offers World-Wide Advice All transplant kids, some neonatal intensive care unit patients, kids with cancer, surgical kids, trauma kids, kids with septic issues or bacterial problems, and most small children experiencing other issues who don’t have good veins, will need blood thinners at some point. Blood thinners prevent often-times life-threatening blood clots. But knowing the correct balance of thinning agents to use in each situation is tricky. Thanks to a unique combination of talent, education, expertise and clinical experience, the KidCLOT team is capable of providing the most up-to-date and relevant information on treating children with blood thinning agents.
3
The team also sits on several international committees including one at the National Institutes of Health where they are working on an artificial hearts-in-children study. And, they are part of an initiative to begin designing child-specific blood-thinning agent trials. It’s something that’s long overdue— actually testing the drugs in kids, not just assuming that they are miniature adults that should be treated with lower doses. The Stollery treats children from birth (often pre-mature) to 17 years of age. A multi-year funding commitment from the Stollery Children’s Hospital Foundation facilitated the development of this program. It’s helping to ensure children have faster recoveries and far fewer issues. Stollery patient Addison, mom Janine, and Dr. Massicotte, Pediatric Thrombosis Unit
Celebrating our Board of Trustees Our Board of Trustees is comprised of dedicated volunteers recruited from the communities the Stollery Children’s Hospital serves. Our Board is responsible for evaluating the Foundation’s goals and objectives to ensure we accomplish the tasks set out in our strategic plan. We are thankful to our Board members for their vision and dedication to the kids at the Stollery. Chair Richard Hiron Vice Chair Zahra Somani Audit & Investment Chair Craig Warnock

First Multi-Visceral Transplant In January 2003, Kyler Prymak made Canadian history. He was the first person ever in western Canada to receive a multi-visceral transplant. He was only nine months old.
5
Kyler was born with a condition known as gastroschisis. Along with other issues, Kyler was born with his intestines outside of his abdominal wall. Thankfully, an organ donor was found and doctors at the Stollery Children’s Hospital performed a gruelling, seven-hour surgery to provide Kyler with a new liver, small intestine, small bowel and a pancreas. Today, Kyler is an active nine-year-old who enjoys running during his lunch hours at school. The Stollery is a leader in western Canada in providing pediatric care and in solid organ transplantation for infants and children. In fact, it is one of the few places in the world that offers pediatric intestinal transplants. The Foundation was pleased to support the purchase of surgical and anaesthetic equipment for these types of pediatric operative services.

Pediatric Centre for Weight and Health creates healthy lifestyles for families
7
Since 2004, with Dr. Ball’s leadership and the support of the Stollery Children’s Hospital Foundation, the Pediatric Centre for Weight and Health has helped a growing number of Alberta’s boys, girls, and their families to develop healthier lifestyles. Creating habits of healthy physical activity, dietary choices, and positive psychosocial health are the essential goals of the Centre’s treatment. At least one parent/guardian must be actively engaged in the treatment and committed to supporting their child in his/her progress. In the future, the Centre will be extending its influence even further. Dr. Ball is actively collaborating with health care providers across Canada to develop a national research network devoted to childhood obesity. “Telling a person (child and family) with obesity to just ‘eat less and move more’ is the same as asking a person with depression to just ‘cheer up’. This reality highlights the need for interprofessional care, which we provide,” says Dr. Ball. Creating healthy children means a healthy future.
Dr. Geoff Ball
Celebrating Special Events Each year, the community supports the Stollery Children’s Hospital Foundation through our special events by making pledges during our radiothon and radio broadcasts, attending events, donating auction items, providing sponsorships and even raising money by shaving their heads. This year was no exception. While there were more than 350 community events, several events were organized through the Foundation office. Thank you to all of our community groups who created fundraising events and to all those who provided ongoing support at Foundation events. Everything you do is helping to raise money for miracles.

A Very Special Delivery Xander Dolski had a dedicated team of more than 100 medical experts supporting him before he was even born. During a routine 20-week ultrasound, the technicians at Victoria General Hospital in Winnipeg, Manitoba discovered a shadow on unborn Xander’s tiny heart. The shadow was a mass the size of the tip of a pencil, but a detailed fetal echocardiogram showed there was a major problem with how the baby’s heart was developing.
9
The Western Canadian Children’s Heart Network became involved and because the Stollery Children’s Hospital is the primary location of all open-heart surgery for western Canada Jennifer, Xander’s mom, came to Edmonton at 36 weeks of pregnancy. An MRI determined Xander’s lungs were capable of supporting him through a heart transplant, and when a heart became available, Xander was born by c-section. Xander went into heart surgery when he was only three hours old. Thanks to the Stollery, Xander has finished Grade One and is taking swimming lessons and learning to ride a horse. “He’s a normal, active six year old,” says Jennifer. Donors to the Foundation provided many pieces of equipment that would have been used for Xander at various phases of his initial, pre- and post-transplant care. These critical pieces include the diagnostic equipment for pediatric cardiology echocardiography, cardiorespiratory monitors for the inpatient cardiac unit, and a ventilator for the Pediatric Intensive Care Unit.
Xander is home and doing great
Celebrating Partnerships Miracles are made monthly, and the number of donors who contribute on a regular basis continues to grow. These outstanding people are part of the Miracle Makers Circle and they ensure the work at the Stollery is supported throughout the year. Their support opens doors of hope, health and discovery for thousands of children each year. We have many partners who contribute through community initiatives, major gift donations, and corporate donations. It’s through these powerhouses that children have access to the care and equipment that is as unique as they are when they need it the most. Our national sponsorships with the Children’s Miracle Network support children’s health across the country. It’s a non-rofit organization dedicated to saving and improving the lives of sick and injured kids in local communities. It raises funds for more than 170 children’s hospitals—14 of which are in Canada. Thanks to the efforts of all of our partners, the Stollery is sending more children home each year.

A Breakthrough Procedure
Like most parts of the human body, the thorax, which comprises the chest wall, rib cage and spine, is too often taken for granted. If a child’s chest cavity is severely constricted, his or her lungs are hampered during growth. In 2006, Dr. Douglas Hedden performed a breakthrough procedure at the Stollery on a six-year-old boy with severe scoliosis. Known as the VEPTR surgery (for Vertical Expandable Prosthetic Titanium Rib), the procedure involves the insertion of a metal rod device curved to fit the back of the chest and spine. It is attached to ribs at one end and then the spine, ribs or pelvis at the lower end, in order to keep the ribs wide enough apart to allow for proper lung development. One of the key innovations in the technique is the expandable nature of the VEPTR device. As a child grows, the attached titanium ribs can be expanded during subsequent surgeries (perhaps every four to six months), thereby giving the lungs the extra room and opportunity to grow. Once the child reaches an adequate size the device may be removed or it may need to be replaced by a spinal rod when the final operation to fuse the child’s spine is completed. There is now a VEPTR II, a similar device to the VEPTR except that a greater variety of implants are available, giving the surgeon further options in subsequent surgeries. It is also smaller and easier to insert into smaller children. The Foundation funded a portable C-arm x-ray and an operating microscope for use during surgery. A special ‘nerve testing’ piece of equipment was also purchased and is used by surgeons in these intricate operations. Donors help to ensure the Stollery is able to update equipment that makes all the difference in the world to a child.

Celebrating Volunteers
Volunteering is famous for skill development, socializing, having fun, and for making contacts for possible employment. Well, staff and volunteers at the Stollery Children’s Hospital Foundation definitely have fun. And, the Foundation often hires staff with volunteer experience – even its own volunteers. This year, we saw an increase in volunteers who participated in more than one role. We also saw the most growth in volunteers taking on more responsibility. We simply could not continue to support the kids at the hospital without the help of volunteers. They helped us at dozens of events, in the office, at our community events, answering phones, and being of great support whenever and wherever asked to contribute.

Thank you!

Making Surgical Minutes a Milestone Dr. William Cole, the Chief of Pediatric Surgery at the Stollery Children’s Hospital, is enthusiastic about the role the hospital is playing as an inaugural member of the Canadian Pediatric Surgical Wait Times Project (CPSWTP), which has seen improved wait times and outcomes for children needing scheduled surgery. “It’s a way of creating order out of what otherwise could be chaos,” says Dr. Cole, describing the scheduling system developed by the Wait Times project.
13
The next step in the wait time strategy at the Stollery is to implement a monitoring system for emergency work, similar to that used for scheduled surgeries. Dr. Cole feels that a dedicated daytime emergency operating room is necessary, “The practical problem is how do you actually do that (currently) without interrupting the patient schedule for the day and increasing the wait list for the patients waiting for scheduled surgery? We’re now in the happy situation that with redeveloping the operating rooms we have the capacity to build in an emergency operating room that can be used during the day. That’s a fortunate situation.” The opening of the dedicated pediatric surgical suite was a first, giant step toward giving children who need surgery the appropriate, timely, child focused and family centred care that is the hallmark of the Stollery Children’s Hospital. The development of the surgery clinics, including plaster room and urodynamic suite, and the comprehensive organization provided by the Canadian Pediatric Wait Times project – both supported by the Stollery Children’s Hospital Foundation – made 2007 a significant milestone in the Stollery’s first ten years.
Dr. William Cole

2008 A Miracle is Born
Although Roxanne Follett experienced other medical problems, the first eight months of her pregnancy were normal. In January 2008, however, she went to the hospital in Grande Prairie because she was having difficulty breathing. Although Roxanne thought she was having an asthma attack, the medical personnel in Grande Prairie weren’t so sure so they airlifted Roxanne to Edmonton.
15
Roxanne’s CT scan indicated she had a tear in the inner lining of her aorta – making immediate surgery necessary. Multiple coordination and communication between three teams – the obstetric team, the cardiovascular team, and the neonatal team – was required. More than fourteen medical personnel worked together to save Roxanne and her baby. “First they opened my chest to expose my heart. Then Dr. Billy Wong performed a c-section to deliver Miracle Astra,” says Roxanne. This sort of surgery was unprecedented in Canada. Not only was it the first ever operation of its kind to be successful in this country, but Roxanne and Astra are among a small handful of parents and children globally – only nineteen – to survive such a procedure. Astra was healthy and did not require long-term neurodevelopmental care through the neonatal intensive care unit. Today, at four years old, Miracle Astra is a healthy, happy toddler. Donors ensured the funding was there for the overhead warmers infants in critical care use, keeping this precious Miracle warm and comfortable. Miracle Astra

Breakthrough Research healing babies’ lungs Dr. Bernard Thébaud is a specialist in the Stollery’s neonatal intensive care unit where he works with premature infants who suffer severe respiratory failure. Typically, a baby is deemed “premature” if born before 37 weeks of pregnancy. At one time, babies born before 34 weeks gestation were not able to be saved because the developing organs were not yet mature enough to sustain life without some form of intervention. With advancements in medical technology, however, that number has dropped significantly, so there now exists an entirely new patient population. Today, babies born seriously preterm, at 24 to 28 weeks, can be kept alive. The challenge is that due to their prematurity, their lungs have not developed sufficiently; ironically, the very devices that are used to keep them alive (breathing tubes and forced oxygen) also damage the lungs and result in bronchopulmonary dysplasia (BPD), a serious lung condition that can result in chronic lung damage.
17 Dr. Bernard Thébaud
Team Xplore, a group of dedicated doctors and researchers, led by Dr. Thébaud, who work in a lab housed in the Stollery Children’s Hospital, made a startling discovery. By injecting stem cells from bone marrow into the airways of rats, they found that the cells appeared to repair the lungs. “During the tests,” Thébaud explains, “there was a lot of waiting. We injected the cells, then waited for three weeks. Then we waited again for more testing. Finally, we looked at the treated lungs under the microscope and thought, this is too good to be true. So we repeated the experiment, and the same thing happened.”
of prematurity, the researchers at Xplore are hopeful that the stem cell breakthrough will also help them to find new ways of treating cystic fibrosis, acute respiratory distress syndrome, severe asthma, pulmonary fibrosis and emphysema.
Dr. Thébaud believes it’s realistic to think of a pilot study within the next five years. “The possibilities are endless,” Thébaud says. In addition to researching the chronic lung disease
The Foundation is pleased to support this important and life saving research.

The Pediatric Chronic Pain Clinic Opens at the Stollery
The Pediatric Chronic Pain Clinic at the Stollery is one of six dedicated clinics in Canada. The clinic treats and cares for children up to age 18 who are experiencing chronic, difficult-to manage pain. Patients see an inter-disciplinary team including a physician specializing in pain, a nurse practitioner, a physical therapist and a psychologist.
19
The Pediatric Chronic Pain Clinic uses a biopsychosocial treatment model – bio relating to the biology, psychological relating to the mind, and social relating to the child’s interactions. This model is the clinic’s chosen way of understanding a child’s individual experience. It also helps guide the team’s approach to accurate diagnosis and best treatment plans. One in five children in Canada are affected by chronic pain, and one to three per cent will require the care and treatment of a greater team such as the one offered at the Pediatric Chronic Pain Clinic. In 2010, the Stollery’s clinic saw 54 new children, while continuing to follow children and families referred from previous years. Their youngest patient was four years old, but the average age is 14. The treatment and care team at the clinic works hard to foster an environment that integrates excellence in the delivery of care, education and research. Through the Foundation’s support, donors are ensuring this research continues and novel approaches for pain management are explored. Creating a healing environment with less pain is something everyone wants to see.

Ten years of excellence
A Lifetime of Achievement for A Life-Giving Cardiologist
In 1996, Dr. Lori West performed the first intentional blood type mis-matched heart transplant. The procedure was a complete success. Since then, the protocol that Dr. West developed has been adopted by more than twenty institutions in nine countries. Her work has opened the door to ever-expanding research opportunities and has saved more than 150 families from having to suffer the loss of a child.
21
The American Society for Transplantation recently awarded Dr. West the Clinical Science Established Investigator Award, Professor Level for research contributions, and she has also received the 2011 Lifetime Achievement Award from the Canadian Society of Transplantation. West holds a Tier 1 Canada Research Chair in Cardiac Transplantation, is an Alberta InnovatesHealth Solutions Senior Scholar and Director of Heart Transplantation Research in the Faculty of Medicine & Dentistry at the University of Alberta. She currently serves as President of the International Society for Heart and Lung Transplantation (ISHLT). In her role with ISHLT and her Canadian Research Chair, Dr. West is dealing with complex issues of ethics in transplantation worldwide, as well as encouraging the development of interdisciplinary networks to allow researchers to reach out to one another and form the types of collaborations that Dr. West has with nanotechnology chemists. “It will be instrumental in taking us to the next level of understanding,” Dr. West says, “and I think we should all have a chance for that level of collaboration.” Donors continue to support this on-going critical research.
