A
lthough often touted as a relatively new power source, solar energy has been used for centuries. The ancient Greeks designed their homes to take advantage of the sun’s heat as far back as 400 BC. A steam engine powered by solar energy was created around 1860. The first solar cell capable of powering everyday electrical equipment was developed in the U.S. in 1954. And yet the sun still remains a relatively untapped energy source, which is why the time to convert to solar power may never be better – particularly for those living in south Texas. “Of course, this is a very sunny state, but the main reason solar energy is such a viable option for San Antonio is our utility company, which is willing to pay anywhere from one-third to 40 percent of the cost of installing a solar system,” says Raymond Saenz, president and CEO of Ecowatt Design, LLC. As part of an ambitious plan to conserve 771 megawatts of power by the year 2020, CPS Energy is offering incredible rebates for residential and commercial property owners who install a solar electric system. Refunds start at $3 per AC watt for systems smaller than 100 kW. For larger projects the rebates can be as much as $30,000 for residential installations and $100,000 for commercial.
According to Saenz, the average residential solar system costs about $30,000. But, factor in the CPS and federal rebates, tax credits and savings on their monthly electricity bill and homeowners recoup between 60 and 70 percent of the cost of installation within the very first year. Solar system users typically slash their monthly electricity bills by 30 to 50 percent. A native of Alice, Texas, Saenz first moved to San Antonio to attend the University of Texas. In 2005, he read an article about solar power and immediately fell in love with the concept of making energy from a renewable source. He formed Ecowatt Design soon after. “It was a hard sale in the beginning, but there were no rebates available at the time,” he says. “Now I think people are much more aware of solar energy and I see it becoming a part of everyday life.” A registered solar installer with CPS Energy, Ecowatt Design has served residential and commercial clients across Texas and even placed 80 solar panels on the rooftop of Robert “Tito” Norris’ dental practice at 18720 Stone Oak Parkway. Although rooftop solar panels remain the most popular option, Ecowatt Design has a number of options for solar energy. Saenz will also file for all available rebates, obtain necessary city permits and seek HOA approval on behalf of their clients. “We do all the work for them,” says Saenz.
