Making a Splash Cool waters. Gorgeous designs. Superb construction. Get the pool you’ve always dreamed of with help from the experts at Keith Zars Pools.

By Jennifer Chappell Smith

an Antonio residents get divided into two camps: those who have a pool and those who don’t. Those who enjoy cool waters and tranquility in a personal, backyard oasis and those who imagine what that would be like. That’s where Keith Zars Pools (KZP), known for building luxury pools in San Antonio for over 30 years, can help.

architects to develop custom swimming pools built with meticulous detail and functional design. The salespeople are trained to listen to customer ideas, to explain the importance of how KZP builds its product, to outline the various design layouts, features, and options, and to help them purchase the right pool for their outdoor oasis.

“We sell dreams,” says Vice President of Sales and Marketing Tom Cameron, adding that it’s not too late to get a pool built before summer temperatures spike. “It takes us normally just six to eight weeks from the time we start excavation to complete the pool.”

Clients are provided 2D computer renderings to show how the pool design and layout will fit on their property. Next, KZP uses 3D, state-of-the-art software to showcase a life-like computer rendering. “You can actually hear the water bubbling in the waterfalls and see the back of your home completely transform into an outdoor, functional dreamscape,” explains Cameron. It’s a way for homeowners to feel confident that the pool they’re dreaming of will become a reality. “And that goes to the company’s philosophy,” Cameron says. “It’s built on the idea of being able to control the quality of the design from beginning to end.”

S

Started by Keith Zars, whose family has been in the pool industry since the mid-1900s, the company is a full-fledged pool building company that constructs gorgeous, in-ground, gunite pools. “Keith has chlorine in his veins,” says Cameron, adding that his boss takes great pride in having his name on such quality pools. With a fleet of vehicles and trucks that entail everything from excavators, ready-mix concrete trucks, backhoes and service trucks to tractor-trailer rigs, the company dispatches its crews daily to an average of eight to ten residential construction sites. In 2015, KZP built approximately 400 residential and commercial swimming pools and did nearly $50 million in business. Beyond building residential and commercial pools, KZP has a renovation/rehabilitation business, along with thriving pool maintenance and pool service departments. Set Apart by Quality Craftsmanship and Design Homeowners work directly with KZP salespeople who work alongside their on-staff designers and licensed landscape

San Antonio’s No. 1 Pool Builder of Choice for More Than 30 Years and Growing Dedication to superior craftsmanship extends to the loyal staff at KZP. Among its 350-plus employees are skilled teams of artisans who specialize in various areas of pool construction. “We are different in that we use our in-house trades to build our pools, where most all pool builders rely on subcontractors,” Cameron says, “and each craftsman is an expert in their trade.” That means the steel crew that ties the grade 60 rebar into place does this on every pool they build. Their specially formulated “wet-mix” shotcrete is installed into each pool by their trained gunite crew, and their plaster crews are trained to properly install all types of plaster, even Pebble Tec®. Many of the crew members have been with the company for 20 years or more. Some workers are even 2nd and 3rd generation family members loyal to the company.

“Every pool is an art piece. Every pool we build is a custom pool that bears the name of the company.”

—Tom Cameron, Vice President of Sales and Marketing, Keith Zars Pools

Building pools that have the “wow” factor, the team at KZP thinks of each project as a work of art. Framed pictures of these elaborate, oasis-like creations line the walls of their showroom like an art gallery. The azure pools of all shapes and sizes also boast superior construction. The company uses a unique cantilevered system versus the traditional beam pool structural construction. “Think of an inverted cowboy hat and the brim of the hat symbolizes our cantilevered system; if you cut away the brim of the hat, it can easily be compressed and twisted. That is the way we extend the steel from the pool’s edge into the deck so that it’s an integrated, monolithic structure,” explains Cameron. “That process alleviates the risk that the pool will separate from the deck due to ground movement.”

“[Each pool] is a true masterpiece that takes a lot of mechanics behind the scenes to make it happen,” Cameron says. “Our Lifestyle Protection Plan provides pool protection that most pool companies won’t offer in their warranties. We have customers who have been on the plan for over 15 years and who are so happy to have that assurance and protection on their investment.” Expanding a Legacy As Keith has made luxury pools his niche market, he can talk shop with his other family members who are also in the swimming pool industry. And Keith has passed on his love for the family business to his two adult sons, who both work at KZP. Looking to expand throughout South and Central Texas, KZP caters to its customers throughout the San Antonio market and beyond, recently taking on projects within Corpus Christi and Del Rio. To do that, Zars relies on the employees who share his know-how and dedication to high-quality construction and craftsmanship. “Keith started the business from the ground up and attributes its growth to the people that he has working here,” Cameron says.

Other innovations that distinguish KZP include: • Deeper excavation for less movement and floatation. • Washed gravel under the pool shell to reduce structural movement. • Plumbing through a direct plumbing process called a “Home Run,” which is installed under the pool, not around the perimeter where it would be subject to damage and rupture. • Use of only Schedule 40 PVC plumbing materials to help guarantee all pool lines against blockage at all suction points within the pool. • A Lifestyle Protection Plan (LSPP) that provides customers renewable, comprehensive coverage that takes all the stress and worry out of owning and maintaining a pool.

Tooting His Own Horn

Trumpeter Ethan Swallows plans to punch numbers as an accountant one day, but he’ll never stop punching the valves on the instrument that makes the big, brass sound that he loves.

Student Spotlight

By Jennifer Chappell Smith

F

amilies don’t often invest in pricey school band instruments. The school-issued clarinet or beginner horns will do. But by the time Ethan Swallows, now a senior at Ronald Reagan High School, was in 8th grade, he woke on Christmas morning to find a very special trumpet beneath the tree: a gleaming Yamaha Xeno, worth more than $2,000. “It’s considered a professional horn,” says Ethan, 18.

Ethan had played since 6th grade, and his parents saw his potential. How he’s developed his skill made their investment worth every penny. A talented athlete, Ethan ignored the pleas of Reagan football coaches to try juggling football and band. “I was passionate about trumpet,” he says. He’d watched his older brother as drum major at Reagan and saw “all the time he spent and how much he enjoyed it.” Ethan’s single-minded focus led to success: He made the First Concert Band and regional band his freshman year. He was named outstanding male band student his freshman, sophomore, and junior years at the band banquet, with his senior banquet yet to come. He’s was tapped a Marching Band line leader three years running. He’s played with the First Concert Band all four years and with Reagan’s Jazz Band, Orchestra, and Brass Quintet, too. In January, he was named to the Texas All-State Band. Now president of the band program, Ethan has fun playing jazz on his horn, but he feels the most comradery with the marching band. “You spend so much time with them,” he says. “It’s just the feeling of family and finding where you belong and doing something worth doing and doing it well.”

A regular 1st- and 2nd-place winner on accounting tests through the University Interscholastic League, Ethan will study accounting at Baylor University, but he won’t leave his instrument at home. He’ll practice with the trumpet studio at Baylor: “[To] keep myself in shape—my lips, my chops.” And he’ll audition for Drum Corps International, a professional marching band for the best of the best. In the future, he imagines doing accountant work by day and playing with a community band by night, perhaps giving private trumpet lessons, too. “Maybe the odd gig with a jazz band or for a military funeral,” he adds. “Doing band is probably the best decision I’ve ever made.”

Ethan Swallows will take his prized Yamaha Xeno trumpet to Baylor University next fall after a stellar high school band career.

Do These Frames Look Good on Me?

The Stone Oak Vision Source optometry manager will tell you ‘yes’ or ‘no’ and help you pick just the right frames. Here, fashion meets technology to offer a wide array of options. By Dr. Monica Allison, O.D., Stone Oak Vision Source hether you’re fashion-forward or more traditional, your eyewear says a lot about you. “It’s important,” says Diane Miranda, optometry manager at Stone Oak Vision Source. “You have these frames on your face!” With 10 years’ industry experience, Diane stocks “the latest and greatest” in frame shapes, sizes, and colors. “If you’re going to be wearing glasses, why not have fun with it?” she asks.

W

Diane compares selecting frames to shopping for shoes, admitting she has multiple frames to go with different parts of her wardrobe. While not everyone buys an assortment, Diane will act as a knowledgeable personal shopper once you have a prescription from Dr. Monica Allison or one of her associates. “But it doesn’t just stop with fashion,” says Diane, who is certified by the American Board of Opticianry. She also stocks lenses that have the latest technology to help you see your very best. “In the end that’s what you’re here for,” she says. Diane will talk you through these factors: • Shape. Convention says to choose a frame that’s the opposite shape of your face: A round face needs square glasses, for instance. “But sometimes, we find a round or oval pair that looks amazing [on a round face],” Diane says. “You really just need to try them on.” • Color. Pick a color that goes with your skin tone rather than matching your outfit. • Prescription. Thicker or thinner lenses work better with certain frame shapes. At the new Stone Oak Vision Source location, opening next fall at Stone Oak Parkway and Knight’s Cross, Diane will have more floor space for an even bigger eyewear selection. In the meantime, make an appointment and see today’s inventory. You’ll see your best and look your best after a visit!

Living in the Moment A

From studying insects as an entomologist to flying into combat zones with the U.S. Army, an Independence Village member recounts a life far from ordinary.

t the Vung Tau airfield during the Vietnam War, U.S. Army aviator Ray Hill dove into a bunker as mortars rained. The only service member inside, he realized he had company: a python. “It was as big as a car tire,” he remembers. “I was thinking, ‘It’s either gonna be mortars or the snake.’” He jumped out of the bunker and ran to another. “I took my chances,” he says. “It makes for a good story.” Ray’s got a few of those. His home at Independence Village has the airy feel of a beach house. A tiki statue, seashells, and shore bird paintings recall places he’s lived and served: from Korea, Vietnam, and Thailand to Hawaii and Florida. Now 83, the decorated pilot moved to San Antonio to be near his daughter after years in Naples, Fla., where he and his wife, Phyllis Jean, lived after he retired from the Army in 1979. As he pursued a second career in construction, the couple took out his fishing boat and took up ballroom dancing. Ray smiles at a video of the couple performing at a family reunion more than a decade ago: a rumba, a tango, and the grand finale to Frankie Vali’s “I Love You, Baby.” “It was a marriage made in heaven,” he says, telling of Phyllis Jean’s death a few years back after battling Alzheimer’s. A Louisiana native, he studied entomology at Louisiana State University and surrounds himself with mementoes: his 1954 master’s thesis on silverfish and insecticide; handwritten recipes for étouffée; black-and-white photos from days flying a Fixed Wing Caribou and helicopters into hot zones in Vietnam. Ray’s enjoying life at Independence Village, where he puts some of his life experiences to use. He did a presentation about bugs at the Summer Camp held on the Independence Hill Campus last summer. He also participates in the retirement community’s chili cook-off and takes ballroom dancing classes.

Independence Village resident Ray Hill enjoys living in his spacious home and visiting with his daughter, Suzanne, her husband, and his two grandchildren.

He’s a gifted story-teller, too. Ray tells of two tours in Vietnam and of flights over Korea’s Demilitarized Zone. “We could see the guns trained on us...as we flew by,” he says. And he nonchalantly mentions that in addition to working as a flight instructor and a professor of military science, he also trained soldiers how to fire nuclear weapons on the battlefield. “We never had to use [that technology], but we were prepared to if we had to,” he says. Ray has always shown initiative and intellect wherever life took him—from Cajun country to combat zones, from fishing waters to Independence Village. “Looking back over my life, I see I’ve really had a wonderful life,” he says.

Lending a Paw

The Bow Wow Buddies Foundation® helps animals receive the care they need.

O

ne of the things we’re most proud of here at Camp Bow Wow is our association with the Bow Wow Buddies Foundation—a national non-profit organization that helps pet parents who are struggling financially to afford medical care for their beloved animals. It’s easy for veterinary bills to add up, and if a pet owner faces dark decisions about whether they can afford needed treatments, the Foundation can step in. Even rescue shelters can apply for funds to get pets healthy for adoption.

We love the Foundation’s slogan because it’s so true: “Happy Healthy Pets, Happy Healthy People.” Pets bring such joy to our lives. This amazing non-profit helps keep pets in homes with the people who love them the most for as long possible. Spread the word about this wonderful source of financial aid to other pet lovers like yourself!

Grants of up to $2,500 are available to cover necessary medical treatments for certain conditions, including emergency services. (Funds do not cover spaying or neutering, dental work, preventive care, ongoing treatments, or end-of-life care.) Even if you don’t anticipate facing this kind of financial dilemma yourself, you can make a tax-deductible contribution to help other pet families get help when they need it most. Make contributions through local Camp Bow Wow locations like ours (campbowwow. com/stone-oak/giving-back) or directly to the Foundation (bowwowbuddies.com).
