North Central Baptist Hospital: Creating an Adolescent and Young Adult Oncology Unit. A diagnosis of cancer can change everything: when that diagnosis is for a patient in their late teens or early twenties, it can be especially hard. North Central Baptist Hospital makes oncology care a top priority. As part of a $60 million, six-floor tower expansion that is being added to the hospital to accommodate the needs of the community, North Central Baptist Hospital will soon open the new dedicated oncology floor. This floor, estimated to open by end of October, will feature an Adolescent and Young Adult Oncology Unit. The Adolescent and Young
Adult Oncology Unit will focus on providing state-of-the-art healthcare treatment to those in the 17 to 25 age group. North Central Baptist Hospital is the first hospital in San Antonio and South Texas to house a dedicated oncology unit for this adolescent and young adult age group. The concept was started by Mahendra Patel, M.D., P.A., a specialist in pediatric oncology and hematology, along with the help of the Nursing Director of Oncology at North Central Baptist, Lisa Tarango, BSN RN. Working together, Tarango and Dr. Patel developed and created every aspect of the new unit, keeping patients in mind. Through focus groups of parents and patients and gathering ideas from other similar facilities around the country, the team shaped the look and feel of the unit as a dormitory, complete with media

room, family retreat area and snack room. “There is a lot of thought process that has gone into it and continues to go into it and as we grow and learn our goal is to really serve our patients the best way possible,” stated Tarango. The new oncology floor will have 28 private rooms, eight of which are dedicated to the Adolescent and Young Adult Oncology Unit. Specifically the Adolescent and Young Adult oncology rooms will feature comfortable furniture including sleeper sofas, slider rockers, motivational and colorful artwork and mini-fridges. Patients will also have access to a media room with theatre style seating, game counsels and plenty of movies. The hospital has tried its best to bring all of the comforts of everyday life to this unit so patients can feel at home during their treatments and procedures. The snack room for the adolescent and young adult patients will feature dietary foods that you won’t find on a typical hospital menu, like macaroni and cheese, or sweet and spicy foods. Because patients stay on average two to six weeks during treatment, a family retreat area was designed to include a washer and dryer, comfortable couches and flat screen televisions. Not only did this hospital take into account the patients’ and physicians’ feedback into the design process, but they included the nurses’ feedback into the new floor layout. “We wanted to accommodate our nurses and make their jobs easier and more efficient in order to be closer to their patients at the bedside,” explained Eric Schmacker, Chief Operating Officer at North Central Baptist Hospital.
