A Bridgeport, Texas, native, Duffle taught school before she answered her country’s call in 1944. She’d hoped to work at a bomb factory in Fort Worth. “Like Rosie the Riveter,” she says. But at her grandmother’s home in Oklahoma City, she decided—without a word to her parents back in Texas—to go downtown and join the Navy. “My daddy didn’t talk to me for months,” she says, laughing. The spunky young woman soon had Federal Bureau of Investigation clearance to work as a U.S. Navy Specialist Q Second Class in Washington, D.C. Her task? Decode messages, with battle plans regularly crossing her desk. She wrote to her future husband, Dean, who was serving in the Pacific, that she’d marry him if he got back to the States before she turned 25. “He came back on my birthday,” she says. “I did a lot of things before

Student Spotlight Sword Play
By Jennifer Chappell Smith
T
he pen may be mightier than the sword. But Reagan High School senior and nationally ranked The pen may be mightier than the sword. But Reagan High School senior and nationally ranked fencer Youngseo Joo wields both weapons with stellar results. He ended the 2014-15 fencing season ranked 52nd in the country, and this fall he was named a National Merit® Semifinalist. In a state known for football, how did Joo, 17, first discover fencing? His mom suggested a summer fencing camp after fourth grade. “I wanted to play with swords,” he says, smiling. Joo dabbled in the sport for years, but got serious about it in 10th grade. That’s when he tried an advanced version called epée in which the whole body serves as the target. Training under three-time world champion Velizar Iliev, Joo set ambitious goals, garnering attention on the national stage. But Joo says he still has hard work ahead to qualify for competitions such as the Junior World Cup. What the challenge of epée did for his fencing, his older sister did for his academic life. “She was always driving me, telling me to get my act together,” Joo says. He pledged to beat her score of 230 on PSAT, and he did—by three points. Joo exudes an easy-going confidence that comes from weathering tense fencing competitions and learning when to make his move, instead of “rushing in like ‘Braveheart,’” he says. “I’ve learned to be patient, to think things through... When you learn to rely on yourself you can begin to lead others.” At Reagan, he’s the 2nd vice president of his class, part of the Venom Crew, which rallies the student body at football games, and a mentor in Reagan’s Peer Assistance Leadership Skills (PALS) program. Smart and good with a sword, Joo’s considering engineering or business for college studies and looks to attend a university with a good fencing team, considering schools such as Columbia, Rice and Stanford. No doubt when the time comes to make such life decisions, this skilled fencer will make the right moves. 9
Flexible Spending Accounts: Use By Dr. Monica Allison, O.D., Stone Oak Vision Source

our end-of-year checklist may include to-dos like “Plan Thanksgiving menu” and “Make holiday travel plans.” But add this task: Use all the money in your Flexible Spending Account. If you don’t, you may lose it, since most FSA plans don’t include a rollover option.* Workers use FSA accounts to set money aside through payroll deductions on a pretax basis. Then they can use those funds to pay medical costs all year, including co-pays and medical equipment such as hearing aids and eyewear that insurance doesn’t cover. In an end-of-year panic to spend FSA dollars, my associates, Lindsey Denison, O.D., and Kim Ip, O.D., and I see back-to-back patients between Christmas and New Year’s. If you don’t call for an appointment soon, we may not be able to squeeze you in! And we want you to take advantage of your FSA dollars. So book your appointment now. FSA funds can cover eyeglass needs from premium progressive lenses and an extra pair of contact lenses to sporty prescription sun glasses. Don’t miss a chance to get the eyewear you need for the New Year. *The I.R.S. allows spending through March 15 for previous year’s funds, but employers must elect to extend that option to employees and many don’t.

A local sinus specialist talks about how he pioneered a new balloon procedure to help Texans breathe easier. By Jennifer Chappell Smith
I
n San Antonio, sinuses cause misery for many. But they excite the developer of a new way to fix them— Dr. Vincent Honrubia of the American Sinus Institute in San Antonio. They fascinate him so much that the ear, nose and throat doctor abandoned ears and throats altogether to focus solely on nasal passages. His clinics treat sinus patients exclusively. What’s more, they only offer one sinusitis solution, and it bears his name: The Honrubian Technique™ for balloon sinuplasty. Developed with help from business partner and anesthesiologist Dr. Lawrence Gelman, his modification of the typical balloon sinus surgery goes twice as fast. And 95% of his patients say they would repeat the procedure, which involves inserting a tiny balloon catheter to open blocked passages. “We’re not saying it’s the best way. But we believe it’s the best way,” says Honrubia. The advantage? Rather than going to a hospital where patients are inconvenienced by an impersonal environment, costly services, and a complicated atmosphere or in an office setting treated like a doctor fills

cavities, Honrubia’s patients recline in an exam chair at a clinic and are treated under general anesthesia so doctors have more control of the complex sinus procedure. “A millimeter makes a difference in how the patient feels,” Honrubia says. The son of a teacher and a highly regarded ENT doctor in Los Angeles, Honrubia became enamored of the sinuses during his Chicago residency at Northwestern University. He also became enamored of a South Texas woman, Shannon Strauss, married her, and the couple moved to the Rio Grande Valley. There he opened his Edinburg, Texas, clinic and, two years ago, the successful Stone Oak location in San Antonio. He plans to open a Houston clinic this month. “Houston is a destination location for top, progressive medical care,” Honrubia says. “I perceive what we’re doing as a revolution in changing how care is given to patients with sinusitis, and am excited to be opening in Houston.”

Avoid the Rush
O
nce homeowners decide to sell, they may rush to stake that “For Sale” sign in the yard. Maybe they’ve made an offer on a new house that’s contingent on selling their old one. Or they need to relocate quickly or want to get kids settled at their new school. But if you want to sell quicker and get the best price, take time to prepare your home for the critical eyes of prospective buyers. 1. Make repairs. Anticipate what the home inspector may find. Examine your roof, water heater and other systems and weigh whether it’s worth fixing anything that’s broken. 2. Pack away mementos. Family photos and kid drawings make your house your home. But you want buyers to imagine themselves in the space. 3. “Stage” your home. That means clearing away clutter, even if you have to rent a storage unit to hide accessories, small furnishings and the boxes that fill your closets. Homes “staged” by accredited staging professionals sell in 11 days or less and for 17% more.* But you don’t have to hire a pro if you use a little imagination. Strive to present your interiors as a series of showrooms on display.

Safe Celebrations
Prepare your pet for holiday guests.
I
t’s hard to believe the holidays are just around the corner, and for many of us that means celebrating with a house full of guests. But all that commotion can be stressful on your pets. Consider these tips to help your family pet stay safe and relaxed during the upcoming season: 1. Protect the anti-social pet. Create a cozy spot closed off from others—a place where he/she can relax, a “happy spot.” Arrange for a nice crate with a blanket, food, water and a few favorite toys. 2. Keep an eye out. Check on your pet throughout your party. Use a baby camera to check in on your pet if in another room. Make sure he/she hasn’t gotten into anything. 3. Find an alternative spot. Consider an alternate place for your pet to stay for a day or two when guests are over. Look into a boarding facility or check with your veterinarian or a friend. 4. Give pets a break from being the center of attention. If your pet is the social type, give your pet frequent breaks from the hustle and bustle of the crowd. Pets can become overly anxious around too many people, creating an unwanted behavior. Think of getting paws stepped on or tripped over. Not fun! 5. Let there be food! Use caution around food. There’s no reason why your pet can’t nibble on some of that homecooked meal, but not too much. Boneless turkey is delicious, but make sure the meat isn’t raw, as it might contain bacteria. Watch out for small bones, as well. We don’t want an upset tummy. Mashed potatoes or a little pumpkin are a few other healthy options. 6. Be prepared for accidents. Have the poison control number handy in case of emergencies, 888-426-4435, and know where your local emergency pet center is located.
