SENIOR MOMENT
Independent Interests Senior Chronicles Decades of Foreign Service By Amy Morgan
E
ven as a young girl, Nancy Barber desired to see the world. She researched her options and at the age of 21 joined the U.S. State Department. It was 1961. Ironically, the government deemed her too young to be sent overseas, and she spent her first four years in Washington D.C. Finally, at the age of 25, Nancy got her chance and was posted to Seoul, Korea. She remembers a city in disrepair. She shared a room in a compound built by the Japanese before W.W.II and ate in the army mess. After two years she was assigned to the Reconnaissance Branch of the Defense Intelligence Agency back in Washington, where she was privy to many secrets about America’s satellite imagery capability during the Cuban Missile Crisis. That position required her to travel to Vietnam before the war. In contrast to Seoul, Nancy recollects Saigon as a beautiful, cosmopolitan city. In 1965, she was transferred to Damascus, Syria, which eventually became her favorite destination. Working in the ambassador’s office, Nancy helped a Chinese national defect and dodged attractive Russian spies who tried to compromise the Western girls. Throughout the ‘60s her duties led her to Taipei, Taiwan, Morocco, and Nigeria.
Nancy Barber had an exciting career in the U.S. State Department, the Office of Protocol and the Foreign Service, traveling all over the world.
Even though her work kept her far from her family in Arkansas, her parents were always very supportive of her career. “I was brought up to believe I could do anything I wanted to, if I believed I could do it,” Nancy said. Back in Washington, she joined the Office of Protocol under Secretary of State Dean Rusk. Nancy stepped in to salvage preparations for an important meeting, earning herself a commendation from the Secretary and an invitation to join his advance team to prepare Foreign Service posts for a secretarial visit. Some of these trips included Helsinki, Paris, London and Kathmandu. In the ‘70s and ‘80s, she went back to Damascus, then to London, Manila, Africa, Hong Kong, China, Nepal and Afghanistan. Highlights included watching sea turtle eggs hatching on the beach in Accra, Ghana, and riding an elephant in Jaipur.
Everyone feels Special here!
Enjoy life in our resort-style neighborhood of spacious one story homes, where your neighbors have similar interests and take advantage of a full social calendar.
Nancy found herself in Bogota, Columbia in 1984 at the height of the anti-narcotic program. She spent the remaining years of her career in Costa Rica and El Salvador, eventually retiring from Foreign Service in 1987 at the age of 51. She returned to Little Rock and began a completely new career in the medical field. Nancy took care of both her parents in their later years and was active in her Episcopalian Church parish. Nancy moved to Independence Hill Retirement Community a year ago to be close to her niece, Tam. She has decorated her apartment with artifacts from her travels. Her eyesight is declining, and Nancy appreciates the security of living in Independence Hill, where she can walk for exercise in the corridors and enjoy chef-prepared meals. She shares her home with her beloved non-standard munchkin cat, Bella, who was her last Christmas present from her mother.

Sonterra’s Sensational Summer If you are looking for a more structured camping experience for your kids 5-12, try the Kids Camp. Last year, the club partnered with professional camp outfitters KE Kids, an experienced company that specializes in running camps at country clubs. “We had great results and feedback from members about our Kids Camp last year,” said Deborah Routon, membership director at the Club at Sonterra. Hours are Monday through Friday, 9 a.m. to 4 p.m., with options of complimentary drop off as early as 8:30 a.m., and late pick up extending to 5:30 p.m. Community members are welcome as guests.

here’s no shortage of summer fun at The Club at Sonterra. School is out, and families are enjoying the beautifully landscaped, lifeguarded, 25-meter outdoor swimming pool with a diving well and children’s wading area. Tennis, golf and swimming camps and lessons have begun and are open to the community — although Sonterra members enjoy the perk of special pricing.
And summer would not be complete without mentioning Sonterra’s youth swim team. The Sonterra Stingrays took first place in Division II in the Maverick Summer Swim League last year and hope for another championship season. “Many participants improved their skills and enjoyed the friendly competition,” said Aquatics and Fitness Director, Tim Roberts. The Stingrays are coached by the Trinity University Tigers’ coach John Ryan, who’s been part of Sonterra’s summer swim program for more than 20 years.
Another benefit of membership at the Club at Sonterra — access to the newly refurbished Kids Zone, which offers a fun, supervised, safe place for kids ages 2-12 to play while mom and dad have a relaxing dinner in the 19th hole or take a tennis lesson. The space has been completely renovated with modern updates and separate spaces for pre-school and school-age children to call their own. Manager Samreen Afran implemented a new curriculum this spring that rotates games, crafts, snacks and other activities to engage the children’s interest and keep them entertained. The Kids Zone is open from 8:30 a.m. until 9 p.m.

PET TIP
Fighting Fleas A thorough bath is the first step to remove the fleas already feasting on Fido. You can find a flea-medicated shampoo at any pet or grocery store. You can also go a step further and purchase an oral medication called Capstar that will continue to kill any insects still remaining on your dog within the next 24 hours. Check ahead at the feed or pet store to make sure they carry it. Now that you have your precious pooch clean and flea free, turn your attention to your home. Wash all your dog’s bedding and anything else they lie on in hot water. (This includes your bedding if they like to join you for a cuddle in your bed.) You’ll need to continue to wash fabric items several times to make sure you have completely destroyed any remaining flea eggs. If you see fleas in the home or yard, try sprays or powder to get ride of them. Use more than one product to include several different active ingredients. Don’t be surprised if eradicating fleas requires more than one treatment, as fleas are known to be extremely hardy and resistant to products used to kill them.
By Courtney Crowley
an Antonio’s beautiful spring weather inspired you to take your Snotice pup for a nice stroll in the park. But now you are home, and you he can’t seem to settle comfortably and won’t stop scratching. First, investigate your dog’s skin. Check around his neck, stomach and bottom for little black moving bugs or small black flecks. If you don’t see either —good news — your furry family member might just be suffering from allergies. But if you do – ACT FAST! Your pup unknowingly offered a ride to some creepy critters. You need to eradicate them before they infest your home and yard.
As any pet owner who has ever been unpleasantly surprised by a furry family member’s flea outbreak knows, it is far less costly in time and expense to prevent the problem before it starts. Even if your dog never leaves your property, fleas can still be carried to your yard by wild or feral animals. Talk with your veterinarian about the many products recommended to dissuade any pests from taking up residence on your pup. And consider incorporating beneficial nematodes (worms) as a natural alternative to prevent fleas outside. They will attack the eggs without exposing any family members — furry or otherwise — to harsh chemicals. You can purchase them online or at a local garden center.

Spreading Smiles 7to7 Dental Assistant Office Manager Will Serve in Nepal Nichole was promoted to Stone Oak’s assistant office manager last October. “Samantha took me under her wing, trained me and gave me the tools I needed to grow,” Nichole said. “Now she’s trusting me to take care of things while she’s out.”
By Amy Morgan
Nichole Llamas, dental hygienist and assistant office M eet manager of the Stone Oak branch of 7to7 Dental and
Orthodontics. Nichole joined the practice as a hygienist almost four years ago when she and her husband Justin transferred with his job to the Alamo City. The couple and 15-year-old son, Ryan, moved from Nichole’s hometown of El Paso, where she obtained her Associates of Applied Science Degree in Dental Hygiene in 2011. She had considered other majors, but when she was accepted into the dental hygiene program the first year she applied, Nichole jumped straight in. She was attracted to the profession by the opportunity to meet people and ease their potential fear of visiting the dentist. Nichole considers herself fortunate to have found a position with 7to7 Dental within a week of arriving in San Antonio.
Although Nichole still practices as a dental hygienist on weekends and to cover breaks during the week, she now focuses much of her attention on her administrative responsibilities. She particularly enjoys ensuring office morale remains high. The practice celebrates staff birthdays monthly, and Nichole, along with other management, distributed goodie bags recognizing Dental Assistant Week. The treats included gift cards to Starbucks – conveniently located just across 7to7 Dental’s parking lot at the corner of Canyon Golf Road and Stone Oak Parkway. “We’re probably their number one customer,” Nichole said. She is committed to helping patients reduce any anxiety about a dentist visit. “I was afraid of going to the dentist growing up,” she confessed. “Now I always start by welcoming patients to set a positive tone for the visit. I communicate and explain things carefully to let them know we are in it together.” 7to7 Dental also provides an incentive to patients who keep their biannual cleaning appointments. The practice creates custom trays and gives patients a tube of whitening gel to keep their teeth bright between cleanings. This helps patients remember to make that appointment and not put off coming in, she said.
“I love the potential for growth within the practice, and I trust the intentions of the company to take care of every employee,” she said.
Another of Nichole’s mottos: she loves to learn and try new things. She’ll put this to the test next fall, when she and co-worker Paola Camacho travel to Nepal for two weeks to provide dental care to villagers around Kathmandu. They’ll work with the SIDDHI Memorial Foundation to clean teeth, teach about oral hygiene and assist with dental procedures.
Office Manager Samantha Shadrock began grooming Nichole for a management position shortly after she realized she would need someone to take over the reins when she went on maternity leave.
“I was intrigued by the opportunity to help somebody else based on the knowledge and skills I have. It is going to be an amazing, rewarding experience,” she said.

STUDENT SPOTLIGHT
Reagan Runner
Mile Race Area Qualifier Will Continue Sport at Trinity University By Amy Morgan he family that plays together, stays together. That adage rings true for Ronald Reagan High School senior student Anna King. She inherited her love of running from her parents, both of whom participated in the sport at the college level. Inspired by their example, Anna has been recruited to join the track program at Trinity University, where she will begin classes in the fall.
T
Called the “Energizer Bunny,” by a former soccer coach, Anna ran distance events on Reagan’s District Championship Girls Track and Cross Country teams. Anna lettered in both sports all four years at Reagan. Her contributions assisted the track team’s four and the cross country team’s three District Championship titles. Just recently, Reagan girls track won their area meet in April. Anna was a star performer on Reagan’s 2019 team, placing fifth in district in the 2-mile race and second in the mile, achieving a PR of 5:27. That time advanced her to area competition, achieving the goal she set for herself. “My goal was to make area,” she said. “District this year had very tough competition — there are phenomenal runners from other schools.” Despite great success in the mile, the endurance athlete says she prefers the 2-mile race, because she has more time to gain a leading position.
Anna King runs cross country for Reagan High School and will continue her sport at Trinity University, where she plans on being a pre-medical major.
Best of all, Anna is joined on the team by her sister, Emily. “We practice together all the time. We are just 20 months apart and very similar,” she said. Anna and Emily also love to participate in local races with their parents. This year they all completed Reagan’s Reindeer Run 5K and a run benefitting breast cancer research. “Running makes me feel so good; I love the feeling of accomplishment,” she added. Anna looks forward to the camaraderie and group of friends she’ll immediately acquire when she starts training with Trinity’s track team, but that’s not the only reason she decided to attend the local university. She actually selected Trinity because of the strength of its pre-medical major. Meeting others’ needs through medicine is another trait shared by the King family. Her father is an emergency room physician and her mother, an ER nurse. Trinity has a great research program and a high success rate of students from Trinity getting into medical school, she said. “I love that I’ll have access to my professors — the school is actually smaller than my high school!” Anna was introduced to volunteering at the Animal Defense League through Reagan’s National Honor Society Chapter and now recruits friends and family members to join her. Her grades ranked her in the top 4.5 percent of her class. Counselor Matt Eidson described Anna as, “always approachable, genuinely respectful and a pleasure to serve. She has challenged herself with our most rigorous courses, and she is someone that other students rely on for a sense of comfort, strength and support.”
