7to7 Dental & Orthodontics opens its newest location in Stone Oak By Amy Morgan
Dental & Orthodontics welcomes its first patients 7to7 this month to their newest location at the corner of Stone Oak Parkway and Evans Road. The Stone Oak community has eagerly watched the building right next to Starbucks take shape over the past months.
“We consider it an honor to position our company so we are there when our patients need us. We all have so many responsibilities - the ‘must-do’s’ in life – keeping up can be overwhelming! It is a privilege to be here to help people with their family’s dental health,” Dr. Winburn said.
The 4000-square-foot office at 20122 Stone Oak Parkway offers a more convenient and larger space for their Stone Oak clients and avoids 281 construction traffic, said Tiffany Winburn, D.M.D. She, along with Justin Coke, founder and CEO, run the five San Antonio 7to7 Dental offices, employing 20 dentists and 150 support staff.
The Stone Oak office includes 12 patient rooms, each with TV screens on the wall and ceiling, and on-site X-Ray equipment. Five dental professionals will practice at the newest location: Tiffany Winburn D.M.D., Rachael Lowery, D.D.S., Crystal Murray, D.D.S., Ksenia Royal, D.D.S., and David Maxwell, D.D.S., along with orthodontist Wayne Casson, D.D.S.
Patient convenience, comfort and time is 7to7 Dental’s highest priority. Not only does the professional, caring team of dentists, orthodontists and hygienists provide the highest standard of dental care, the practice offers state-of-the-art technology and a comfortable, affordable and pain-free dental experience. A hallmark of 7to7 Dental is accessibility– offices are open seven days a week, 7 a.m. – 8 p.m., Monday – Friday, and 9 a.m. – 5 p.m., Saturdays and Sundays. Highly trained professionals are always available for same-day appointments or to treat walk-in and emergency patients. “We’re here when it’s convenient for our patients,” Dr. Winburn said, “even completing fillings or other treatment while they are already in the office to minimize additional appointments.” 7to7 Dental is able to accommodate multiple family members simultaneously, offering parents’ teeth cleanings during their children’s orthodontia checks, for instance, making it a onestop solution for family dental care.
4
7 to 7 Dental has invested in the latest technology for their new location, like the Galileos Cone Beam Scanner, which provides high definition 3-D images in just a few seconds with a low radiation dose.
The practice isn’t limited to child and adult teeth cleaning, 7to7 Dental offers orthodontia, wisdom teeth removal, implant placement, dentures, bridges, fillings, and root canals. The office is fitted with state-of-the-art, intra-oral digital cameras that magnify 50x, so dentists can show a patient the condition of their mouth in real time. X-Rays are digital, significantly lowering radiation exposure and requiring no chemicals to develop - better for the patient and the environment, Dr. Winburn added. Another tool, a Cone Beam CT scan allowing three-dimensional viewing of a patient’s jaw and teeth, helps accurately diagnose complicated problems. “Everybody’s familiar with pictures,” Coke said, “and these highly magnified images help patients understand our dentists’ treatment recommendations.” 7to7 Dental is aware the cost of dental care can be an obstacle. The practice is in-network with most dental insurance plans to keep out-of-pocket expense as low as possible. The office will file the paperwork and handle any appeals. They offer financing options and even created an in-house dental plan for uninsured patients. Just $199/year covers all diagnostic cleanings, exams and X-rays, along with a 30% discount on any other services and a reduced rate for additional family members. As an added incentive, 7to7 Dental provides teeth whitening for patients for life. 7to7 Dental is a local business, Dr. Winburn emphasized, grown in 10 years from the practice of one dentist and six employees. She, Coke, and the other professionals live here and are part of the community. They are committed to 7to7 Dental being a good neighbor. The practice dedicates the services of the entire staff on the third Saturday every February to provide free dental care to those in need. Just a few weeks ago they treated 350 patients and completed 800 procedures in one day.
The dentist team at the Stone Oak location shows off the new operatory suites featuring TV screens on the wall and ceiling.
“We developed Dental Hope five years ago to provide free dental care to those in need. It’s our way of giving back to the community that has been integral in our growth,” said Coke. “There are people who wait every year for this,” Dr. Winburn added. “We start at 7 a.m., and whoever is in line by 3 p.m., is guaranteed to be seen. It has been extremely meaningful for all of us. “We took a business model and made it personal. Our service comes from the heart,” Dr. Winburn said.

San Antonio boasts the largest Home and Garden Show in Texas, said Lauren San Martin, marketing director for Show Technology, with upwards of 20,000 people passing through the gates over the event’s three days. Each year the company adds new seminars and vendors to showcase industry trends, she added. For the first time, a panel of local interior design experts will offer their expertise onstage, in conjunction with featured celebrity guest HGTV’s Alison Victoria, San Martin said. Victoria will share secrets from her high-end, interior design and luxury furniture businesses and recount experiences from her time on Kitchen Crashers. Three students from the University of the Incarnate Word Design Challenge will decorate a 10’ x 20’ area to showcase their winning interior spaces and compete for scholarship money.
Many groups from the San Antonio community participate, including vendors from the Legacy Farmer’s Market on the pavilion upstairs. Find Texas-made gourmet food and gifts like jewelry, candles, yard art, leather goods, salsas, smoked meats, cakes, and nuts. Other locals include: • Palo Alto College Plant Sale • Warren High School Construction Careers Tiny House • Wreath Making by Pretty Petals and Succulent Globe Classes by Whimsical Gardens • Tejas Art Club Art Demos and Displays Hours run 2 -7 p.m., Friday, Sept. 29, 10 a.m. – 7 p.m., Saturday, Sept. 30, and 11 a.m. – 6 p.m., Sunday, Oct. 1. Visit www.SanAntonioHomeShows.com for information or to buy tickets.
“The students are really excited because it is typically their first opportunity to design hands on like this,” San Martin said. “A standout last year was a participant who created a ‘She Shed’ that was ahead of the trend.” New-product specialist Boyce Thompson will make his inaugural San Antonio appearance, curating his interactive, Life-Changing Products exhibit. Thompson has made a career of scouring industry trade shows and media to identify cutting edge products – many still in prototype stage. “Boyce finds the next newest, coolest products, which our techy showgoers love,” San Martin said. “Smart home products - being able to control many aspects of your home from your phone – are a useful, innovative trend right now.” He’ll showcase his top 10 finds, including smarter baby monitors, doorbells and deadbolts that help reduce package theft. San Martin said Thompson’s advice is invaluable to those building or remodeling, as being aware of new technology could preclude costly mistakes.

SENIOR MOMENT
Beyond Brackettville Small-town Girl Drives Movie Stars By Amy Morgan
-year-old Elaine Slubar had an idyllic childhood. She grew up west of Uvalde on the Fischer Ranch owned by her mother’s family. Her home was built of 77 river rock with outbuildings of D’Hanis tile. Trips to town took more than an hour on unpaved roads, so the family also owned a house in Uvalde, coincidentally two houses away from the home of former United States Vice President John Nance Garner.
Third of four sisters, Elaine was a cheerleader and homecoming princess at Uvalde High School. Beloved family photos depict the girls sunbathing on the banks of the Nueces River that borders their property. Elaine followed her older sister to the University of Texas. She met John Sheedy, whose family had deep roots in Brackettville, his father serving as Kinney County Sheriff for decades. Sheedy, “the best dancer in five counties,” swept her off her feet. They married and returned to South Texas where the movie industry was changing the landscape. John Wayne had built a movie set complete with an 1836-era Alamo replica at Alamo Village in Brackettville. After The Alamo was filmed, the area was a popular film destination. More than 72 movies, six documentaries, six music videos and 13 commercials were filmed there, according to the Alamo Village website. Popular titles include Lonesome Dove, Arrowhead, starring Charleton Heston, Two Rode Together, with Jimmy Stewart, and The Great Waldo Pepper, featuring Robert Redford. Elaine obtained a commercial license and became a professional driver to the stars. Independence Hill resident Elaine Slubar recalls her days on “As a driver, I had to be at their beck and call. They might send me out to get a sixthe movie set in Brackettville, as a “driver to the stars.” pack or a new shirt,” she said. She has pictures of herself with Redford (she watched him get his hair cut), Jimmy Stewart and Dean Martin. Her favorite story is when she, his driver, jumped into Dennis Weaver’s lap for a picture. Her two sons were able to meet Redford and Ken Curtis from Gunsmoke, among others. The movie business slowed, and Elaine’s life changed. She divorced and went to work at the County and District Clerk’s Office in Brackettville. As her career progressed, she spent 15 years working for Customs and Border Protection under the Department of Homeland Security. It was there a friend introduced her to Leroy Slubar. She describes Slubar as a kind gentleman who was fluent in three languages. They were married for 12 years before his death. Her son John Sheedy IV, who Elaine still calls “Tiger”– a nickname left over from the movie days - lives in Del Rio with his wife. Elaine moved to Independence Hill Retirement Community three years ago. Her lovely apartment is decorated with pictures, filled with plants, and boasts a collection of Nueces River rocks and a nail sculpture – mementos from her life on the ranch. She enjoys singing alto with the Hilltopper Chorus, plays bridge and dominoes several times a week and always looks forward to the dances. “I think I’ve had an interesting life – especially for someone who grew up in a small community - first Uvalde, and then Brackettville – which is just a dot on the map,” Elaine said.

Dog Dangers
If you suspect your dog may have ingested or come into contact with a toxic plant, call your vet immediately. Take note of the symptoms he is experiencing, check plants for signs of chewing, and bring a picture or sample of the plant he may have eaten. If you can’t immediately get to a vet, call the ASPCA Animal Poison Center at (888) 426-4435. The ASPCA Animal Poison Control Center is your best resource for any animal poison-related emergency, 24 hours a day, 365 days a year. An ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure. arch in San Antonio feels like spring is just around the M corner. Warmer weather brings out the urge to update our lawns and landscape. Did you know many common plants and flowers are toxic to dogs? The list of dangerous plants is quite extensive and can be found on the ASPCA website.
How do you know if your pup has consumed a plant that he shouldn’t have? Tell-tale symptoms include: vomiting, diarrhea, fever, weakness, changes in urine, and drooling. Some plants cause skin problems, too, just from touching them. (Think of the time Fido spends digging or patrolling in the bushes.) Different plant-based poisons will require different treatment. There are antidotes for some, while others may be treated with induced vomiting or stomach pumping.

Next Year’s Nurse Student Spotlight By Amy Morgan
S
enior Claire Siebold has a rare clarity of purpose. Inspired by an older sister, Syndee, who is an ICU nurse, Siebold hopes to follow Syndee’s career footsteps and has planned her entire academic experience at Ronald Reagan High School accordingly. To that end she has completed every health career-related class offered, and even now participates in Reagan’s clinical rotations class. She serves as a student assistant at Methodist Stone Oak Hospital three days a week, where she has observed radiology, pediatrics and took a field trip to the morgue! Her favorite part of her clinical rotation so far is being in the emergency room. “I love not knowing what my day will consist of and the fast pace that comes along with it,” Siebold said. “Claire has been taking advantage of the courses offered here at Reagan since her freshmen year to help her reach her goal of becoming a nurse and working in a hospital emergency room. I have known Claire since she was a freshman, and I am very confident that she will have a great career in nursing,” said Mike Robey, Reagan health science technology teacher. Siebold’s plan is well thought out. She has taken many of the dual credit courses offered at Reagan to get ahead for college. Next year, Siebold will start her nursing program and earn her registered nursing degree at Austin Community College, where 95 percent of their students pass the nursing exams. Then she’ll transfer to the University of Texas to complete her bachelor’s degree in nursing. Her priority is to work in the emergency room, then branch out to become a travel nurse so she can see the world while working in the career of her choice. “I can be saving lives every day,” Siebold added. Saving lives - physically, emotionally and spiritually - is important to Siebold. Last summer she worked as a camp counselor for elementary and middle school girls at Camp Tejas, which is affiliated with Community Bible Church, the church in which she’s been raised. She said middle school is a tough time for a lot of girls.
Reagan Senior Claire Siebold serves as a student assistant at Methodist Stone Oak Hospital three days a week. She plans to pursue her nursing degree and one day become a registered nurse and work in an emergency room.
“A bunch of the girls hadn’t really known God, but they accepted Christ, (at camp) and I ended up baptizing three of the campers under my care. It was very moving to see. It is rewarding to see people change in such a short time. “As a camper, I got super close with my counselors who mentored me through a lot of stuff. I wanted to be in that position for others.” Siebold takes her responsibility as a mentor seriously, connecting with her campers on social media and seeing them at Reagan games. She is active in CBC’s Impact Youth Group and says she really enjoys the new pastor, Ed Newton. She appreciates his examples that relate to everyday life and his message about showing love to everyone. She also credits the support and motivation of her family - sisters, Syndee and Kayla, and her parents Andrea and David Siebold, who own Statewide Air Conditioning Company. They have lived in Stone Oak with family dog Shiner, a Shih Tzu, since Siebold was in second grade. When they can organize time together, the family likes to spend time traveling, game nights at home, cookouts in the back yard and playing volleyball in their pool.
Last summer Claire Siebold worked as a camp counselor for elementary and middle school girls at Camp Tejas, which is affiliated with Community Bible Church.

Sonterra's Golf Muse Updates at The Club at Sonterra By Amy Morgan
ach Ramsey is passionate about the game of golf. Although a dedicated player, his concern extends to enhancing the entire Z golfing experience for others. As the new Director of Golf at The
Club at Sonterra, he has been busy meeting and listening to club members. He plans to infuse fresh energy and ideas, while keeping the best and beloved club traditions. “I love to play golf. My goal is to play with every member out here, because you really get to know someone on a personal level when you are interacting where they are most comfortable,” Ramsey said. “My job is about providing a membership experience they won’t find anywhere else.” He is keenly attentive to details. Ramsey immediately tweaked the Club at Sonterra’s traffic flow to streamline golfers’ arrival. Now club attendants meet golfers at their cars, greet them and load clubs right on a cart, after which they are whisked down to the check-in area. No more driving around or lugging unwieldy bags. He, along with General Manager Hagen Cleek and Assistant General Manager Nathan Gillespy, also upgraded the cart and locker room towels, range balls and tees, little things that add up to a big difference. “The club membership is very strong and devoted to their club. I couldn’t be more excited by what I’ve seen so far and how I’ve been welcomed by the members,” Ramsey said. He already has revamped the tournament program, adding online registration that can be scheduled right from an app. And tournaments now offer live scoring on a big screen TV, just like the PGA. “That’s a simple idea I brought with me that hasn’t been done before here,” he said. “It’s been really well received.” Other events in the works – a golf/tennis swap, where members challenge each other to a competition at each other’s sports – ending with a grill and live band. He’s also planning a 9-Hole Super Scramble with a lottery cash payout on Tuesday evenings.
Zach Ramsey is the new Director of Golf for The Club at Sonterra.
The biggest project is the lake upgrade on the north course. As the lake is excavated and enlarged, material will be used to renovate the driving range. “It will be a total makeover by the time we’re done with it. That’s going to be the biggest change this place has seen in over a decade,” Ramsey said. Currently, the driving range has only a slightly elevated tee box, he continued. Plans are to raise it all and add new grass sod, with greens modeled after an actual course to simulate a more realistic experience. Yardage signs and fixtures will make it feel completely new, he said. After construction is complete, the USGA will re-rate the golf course – a desire long voiced by members. Some may not realize the Club at Sonterra offers two courses, which provide completely different golf experiences. The North course is very unique and challenging, he said, while the course south of 1604 is quiet and traditional – with deer and wildlife abundant. Ramsey comes to the Club at Sonterra from Thorntree Country Club in DeSoto, another CBIGG property located just south of Dallas, where he was part of the golf operations since 2009. He and his wife Lauren married in November. Ramsey was raised in Dallas and learned the game of golf from both of his grandfathers at an early age. He won multiple junior tournaments before competing on the varsity golf team at Arlington High School. He also spent three years studying under Master Tech and Fitter Ben Hays, gaining extensive experience in fitting along with entry level and tour level repair and personalization. He has actively competed in numerous qualifiers for the U.S. Open, Byron Nelson and Texas State Open.
