PET TIP
Travel Tips Who or what will be waiting for you when you arrive? Will your vacation home be so crowded with other dogs and people that Fido feels overwhelmed? Will you really have time on the trip to give him the attention he’ll need from you? Who else is bringing their pup? Will your furry family member enjoy joining their pack? So you’ve decided to bring your pup along.
By Courtney Crowley
break – sunshine, warm weather, blue skies… We all need Syou?pring a vacation, but should you take your furry family member with Some things to keep in mind while you are making your decision:
What will the weather be like when you reach your destination? Will Fido be free to frolic, or will cold or wet conditions keep him cooped up indoors. A pent-up pup in a strange environment can quickly turn into a party pooper. Also, check temperatures along the way. Will your canine companion be comfortable waiting in the car if you need a travel stop?

• Lodgings and restaurants are becoming more dog friendly as the trend of traveling with pets grows. Download the app, “Bring Fido,” to make your planning easier. • Check that you clearly understand the destination’s pet policy before you go. Most hotels require a dog to be crated if left in a room alone. It is always handy to keep a collapsible crate in your car in case of emergencies. • Make sure your pup’s wearing a good collar with an updated nametag, rabies tag, and microchip information. • Bring a record of your dog’s vaccinations – you might want to snap a picture to keep on your phone or laptop. While you’re taking pics, make sure you have a recent, clear picture of your pup in case he goes missing. • Pack Fido’s favorite toy to help ease his introduction to new areas. • Include some water from home for your pup. You can also bring dogfriendly flavored electrolyte powder to put in his water to make sure he stays hydrated during travel. • Don’t forget waste pickup bags to clean up after your pet along the way. • If your dog is prone to motion sickness, ask your veterinarian about medication options. And pack a dog first aid kit in case of emergency. A little advance planning will go a long way to make sure your vacation goes smoothly for both man and his best friend.

Tip-Top Trumpeter Air Force Veteran’s Music Entertained Celebrities By Amy Morgan
89
-year-old Jesus Couling could not have guessed when he first held a trumpet to his lips at the tender age of 7 that someday he’d be playing for international dignitaries. As a little boy, Jesus grew up on his grandparents’ ranch in Duval County, south of Corpus Christi. He began playing trumpet in elementary school, so when he enlisted in the U.S. Air Force right after high school graduation in 1947, he auditioned for the Air Force Band in Pensacola, Florida, where he was stationed. He became one of just 14 selected for the Air Force’s traveling dance band. It was the swing era, and these military bands were the best show in the business. Whenever a celebrity came to town, an Air Force Band would be recruited to provide the entertainment. Throughout his 20-year military career, Jesus spent time in the Air Force Band of the Rockies in Denver; the Air Force Band of the West at Lackland AFB; and bands in Las Vegas and Newfoundland, Canada. He played for Frank Sinatra before the Strip was even built – Las Vegas was just a few casinos, he said. In Newfoundland, Jesus played for the Queen of England and the King of Denmark in the 1950s. That’s where he met his wife, Doris, with whom he had six children in their 65-year marriage he described as a fairy tale. In Denver, Jesus spruced up his skills and played the evening trumpet call for President Eisenhower. A fellow band member, John Williams, eventually became the famous Hollywood composer who conducted and wrote the music for Schindler’s List, War Horse and Jaws, among others. The two became reacquainted at a band reunion in the 1970s, where John encouraged Jesus.
Jesus Couling played trumpet for Bob Hope, Frank Sinatra and even President Eisenhower.

“He told me I was a good trumpet player,” Jesus said. “He remembered all of us; it was a heck of a meeting!”
Lifestyle YOU Deserve!
Enjoy life...
Jesus’ last post was to Lackland, where he played for Bob Hope and marched in parades across Texas. Jesus attended a concert there recently and was moved when the crowd recognized his alumni status with a standing ovation.
in our maintenance free neighborhood of spacious one story homes, with great neighbors and a full social calendar.
He retired from the military as a technical sergeant and sold electronics at the Central Park Mall Sears for 20 years. He settled his family in Windcrest in 1976, and played trumpet at St. John Newman Catholic Church.
Make New Friends...
Doris’ death two years ago prompted Jesus to move to Independence Hill last year. He has met a new lady companion with whom he enjoys attending the Sunday night musical shows and Friday dances. Another fellow resident - a saxophone player from Abilene - inspired him to pull out his trumpet again. “I’m a bit rusty,” he said, but hopes to perform again soon.

JROTC Leader Follows Father’s Footsteps
By Amy Morgan ou wouldn’t guess at first glance that petite, feminine High School Senior Katelynn Gomez is actually a tough commander in Ronald Reagan High School’s JROTC program.
Y
She credits her father, a retired U.S. Army staff sergeant, with instilling the fire in her belly. “He would box in the sauna room!” she said, adding he was known for straightening up the misfits. Kat, as she is called, commands the Reagan Girls’ Raider Team – leading her group of 12 ladies in intense physical competitions. Think “Tough Mudder” on steroids - events include obstacle courses and combat fitness tests, where the teams create a rope bridge on the spot to cross water-filled ditches and run distances with a 25-pound weighted backpack. “It is the best,” she said. “I get to motivate my girls. They know I’m no joke when it comes to competing. I grab them and make them run with me. It’s a standard I set for them, and they know what to expect.” Running comes naturally to Kat, another trait she inherited from her father, who competed on UTSA’s track team. Kat has joined both of her parents in local events, winning first place in the under-18 age group in the 2018 Cocoa 10K – just a short 6.2 miles – and also participated in a Mud-Run production with both parents last year. “Running is the most natural sport, just you and your body,” she said. Kat represents Reagan on the school’s varsity cross country and track teams.
Senior Katelynn Gomez is the battalion commander in Ronald Reagan High School’s JROTC program. She is hoping to receive an appointment to the Air Force Academy.
She has been involved in the JROTC program since freshman year – advancing from private to her current position as battalion commander. She credits the program with teaching effective communication and leadership skills and how to cope with varied situations. Kat enjoys the physical cadet challenges involving PT goals of push ups, sit ups, shuttle run, flexibility and pacer mile. “When you are the leader, you have to set the example and be at top level so you can encourage others,” she said. Kat is responsible for recruiting and retaining new cadets and enjoys reaching out to younger students. “We take our teams to middle school and show them they can be a part of something and have a second family,” she said. Having a group with whom one can identify resonates with Kat. She moved often following her father’s Army career. Most of her childhood memories are from Eagle River, located outside of Anchorage, she said. Kat arrived in Stone Oak in time to attend Lopez Middle School. Although her family background has been with the Army, her goal is to win an appointment to the Air Force Academy with hope to become a trauma surgeon. Her dream is to deploy and work at an in-field U.S. Air Force surgical hospital.
