Swimming with the Experts Emler Swim School Teaches the Entire Family

By Amy Morgan

weather is heating up in San Antonio, and soon almost every T hegathering will be planned in or around a swimming pool.

The cool water beckons alluringly during our hot summer months, so it is important to ensure everyone in the family is water safe. The United States averages 10 fatal drownings per day. Children ages 1-4 have the highest drowning rates, and for every child who dies from drowning, another five require emergency care due to unintended submersion. Most accidents occur in home swimming pools.

Unlike seasonal swim programs or those offered by a franchise, Emler is corporately owned and offers a 100 percent swimmer guarantee. Emler Swim School founder, Jan Emler, started teaching swim lessons when she was a young lifeguard. She saw a need for a more focused and nurturing approach to teaching children to swim and later began her business in the North Richland Hills area of Fort Worth. 40 years later, 26 Emler Swim Schools cover Texas and Kansas City.

Stone Oak parents have a new option to prepare their children to enjoy the water safely. The venerated Emler Swim School has opened at 20210 Stone Oak Parkway, suite 204, just across from the Starbucks, at the intersection of Canyon Golf Road and Stone Oak Parkway. In November of 2018, the company purchased and renovated three former swim facilities in Stone Oak, Schertz and on Huebner Road. They also built another in Alamo Ranch. All four San Antonio Emler Swim Schools are now open and enrolling students 2 months and up. Emler owners changed the Stone Oak facility’s layout, removing a wall so there is no obstacle blocking vision to the pool. Emler pools use salt water and a state-of-the-art, UV-light, water-purification system. The pool temperature and the air on deck are maintained at 90 degrees. These physical features make the environment clean, comfortable and healthy for their patrons. Emler owners changed the Stone Oak facility’s layout, removing a wall so there is no obstacle blocking vision to the pool. “We maintain control of the training, operations and relationships with our parents,” said Kendra Walker, Vice President of Operations. She has been with Emler for 26 years, joining the company as a teacher when her children were small. “Consistency is one of our core values. When you come to Emler, you are going to have the same experience no matter which location or teacher. The curriculum is World Class and other swim schools have tried to replicate what Emler has spent 40 years creating.”

4

Michael, age 10 1/2 months, holds his breath for eight seconds and swims three feet independently.

Emler swim instructors will place each new student into a level determined by age and swimming experience. If a parent is unsure the best level for their child, an instructor will help them decide during a free evaluation. Each level is appropriate for a child’s gross and fine motor skills and emotional readiness, Kendra explained.

Every lesson, teachers note each child’s progress toward goals. Before the end of class, parents are called from their spot in the airconditioned, glass-front waiting area or their seat on the pool deck to watch their child show off the skill of the day. Emler guarantees each child will successfully complete the clearly defined goals for each specific level. “All kids can make progress in the water, and that’s something we can celebrate,” Kendra said. “Not only do we teach your child to love swimming, we also teach them how to respond in a water safety emergency such as an unexpected fall into the water. Older class levels include boat safety as well as a recreational swim team. “People who have lost children to drowning mention so often the child went missing when they thought he was sleeping or when there was a momentary distraction,” Kendra said. “The number one goal at Emler is to teach the greatest number of non-swimming children to swim.” Another safety skill taught is to jump, turn and swim. “Children don’t fall in the middle of the pool, they fall in over the steps or the side, and they just don’t know how to right themselves and reach for the wall. They might not be strong enough to pull themselves out, but they can hold on and buy their parents some more time,” Kendra said.

Emler swim instructors will place each new student into a level determined by age and swimming experience. Part of the teaching strategy is to make heading for the pool wall attractive. Emler teachers creatively place incentives at the edge to motivate a child to turn around and swim to the side. The Emler Swim School’s Waterbabies and Bathtime Babies classes provide an opportunity for the youngest children to become acquainted with the water. Parents of those younger than three are required to be in the pool with them. Not only does this arrangement enhance a child’s comfort and safety, it allows positive bonding time for parent and child. “It’s a fun time away from the phone to give your child 100 percent of your attention. My favorite thing is watching the pride in a parent’s eyes as their child is successful at the little milestones like floating independently or underwater breath control,” Kendra said. “The children are giddy with excitement to show their parents their achievements.” Don’t delay; make sure your family members are ready for the water. Emler Swim School is enrolling all ages at times convenient to your schedule. Find more information at emlerswimschool.com.

STAFF PROFILE

Hands to Serve 7to7 Dental’s Office Manager Committed to Philanthropy Without hesitation, the organization promoted her, and she took responsibility for the Evans Road location in January 2016. When the office moved to its current location in the heart of Stone Oak last April, Samantha was integrally involved. She accompanied practice co-owner Justin, readying the space for patients in the brand new 12-room, stateof-the-art facility. Samantha now manages an impressive 25 employees, five dentists and an orthodontist. Most important to her internal drive is her role as a customer service advocate, ensuring everyone has a positive overall patient experience. Leading by example, Samantha has maintained her dental hygiene license through continued education and consistent application, so she is able to jump in to care for patients should the need arise. By Amy Morgan

has shaped up to be a big month for Samantha Shadrock, M ayRDH, Office Manager of 7to7 Dental and Orthodontics at

20122 Stone Oak Parkway. This career-driven woman anticipates reaching many milestones in the next 30 days. Samantha will celebrate her 30th birthday and the birth of her first child. In addition, she will commemorate her fifth year as a hygienist/office manager with 7to7 Dental. Her achievement follows on the heels of the successful Stone Oak location’s first anniversary in April. Samantha began her dental career intrigued by the continued buzz in the profession about 7 to 7 Dental and Orthodontics. She joined the practice as a dental hygienist after graduating from Concorde’s Dental Hygiene program. “The things we do for patients won me over,” she said. Samantha noticed how Justin Coke, practice founder and CEO, and Tiffany Winburn, D.M.D., took care of the community, and she immediately started to seek ways to participate. Her interest and leadership earned her a recommendation for management.

“My ability to work as a hygienist allows the practice to be more flexible,” she said. “If a parent comes in and needs a cleaning during a child’s scheduled cleaning, or if we have a walk-in in the middle of lunch hour, I can help at those times when it’s really needed.” Samantha’s hygienist skills were put to good use February 16, 2019, when 7to7 Dental took care of 211 patients during their annual Dental Hope event. This admirable leader, in her third trimester, worked alongside the hygienists for 10 hours to make sure the greatest number of patients could benefit. Prior to earning her license, Samantha had considered a career in public health due to her primary motivation to help others. When she is not working, she enjoys community service through the Fraternal Order of Eagles Aerie #70 (F.O.E), which she joined as a member when she was just 18. Samantha cherishes the F.O.E #70 motto, “People helping People.” She was inspired by the legacy of her mother and grandfather, both of whom migrated from England and taught her the value of giving back through their involvement with the non-profit. Soon, she hopes her own daughter will follow in her footsteps of philanthropy.

STUDENT SPOTLIGHT

Soccer Standout Reagan High School Senior

By Amy Morgan occer has been the first love of senior Ronald Reagan High School student Michael Morell for as long as he can remember. His father was a college athlete, and Michael “grew up with a soccer ball.” He started organized play as a very young child in Chicago, where the family lived until they arrived in Stone Oak in 2010. Michael’s two younger sisters Francesa, a junior, and Isabella, a freshman, both attend Reagan.

S

Upon arrival in Stone Oak, Michael immediately joined the Classics Elite soccer club. He also trained with the SAFC Elite Training Program. Michael caught the eye of coach Darren Powell, the head coach of the senior SAFC team. Powell helped Michael navigate the college recruiting process during Michael’s junior year. After considering multiple offers, Michael eventually signed his letter of intent this fall with the University of North Carolina - Wilmington. “The college recruiting process can be a bit overwhelming,” said Michael. “I am grateful to all my coaches, and especially Coach Powell, for helping me sort it out. He introduced me to programs I would not have considered. His connections to the college and professional soccer world are so important to young players like me trying to play at the next level. We are truly blessed to have him as a member of our community.” The past years have been fruitful both on and off the soccer field for Michael. His club team competed in the national finals last summer in Massachusetts. As a co-captain on the Reagan soccer team, he helped lead the Rattlers to a district championship and the 2018 UIL state finals, where they finished as the UIL State Runner-Up. His accolades from 2018 include being listed on Top Drawer Soccer’s 2019 winter all-American watch list, being named to the 2018 United Soccer Coaches’ winter all-region team, Texas Association of Soccer Coaches’ all-state second team, District 26-6A all-district first team and the UIL 6A all-tournament team.

Reagan Soccer Captain Michael Morrell played on the school’s 2018 State Championship Runner-Up Team and will continue the sport next year at the University of North Carolina – Wilmington.

This year, the Reagan boys came in third in district play and won the annual Ian’s Cup contest against Johnson High School, where Michael was awarded the annual Ian’s Foundation scholarship. They beat Johnson 2-0 in Regional Quarterfinals April 4, and advanced to Regional Semifinals April 12. There Reagan beat Hanna but eventually fell to NEISD district-champion-rival Lee, to finish eighth in the state. Combining school and club soccer means Michael dedicates three to four hours every day to the sport. But that’s fine with him. “Going to state last year was the most fun experience I’ve had,” Michael added. One might be tempted to think soccer is the only passion of this talented young athlete, but that would be a mistake. Michael is an academic standout at Reagan as well. He participates in the gifted and talented program, is in the top 15 percent of his class and was one of only four students selected in 2018 for Texas Boys State. The program was especially appealing to Michael, as he will pursue interests in political science and entrepreneurship in college along with a business degree.

PET TIP

Finding Fido If your search doesn’t yield results, check with neighbors, businesses, and local parks. If your pack includes more than one dog, and only one is lost, bring the others along as you look. Next, spread the word on social media. Share on local Facebook groups and the Nextdoor Neighbor App. Dedicate a specific Facebook page to your furry family member so people can post sightings and stay in touch with search results. Posting flyers increases exposure. Create a flyer that includes a large, recent picture of your dog, a little bit about them, and how to reach you. Make sure the important information is large and visible enough so motorists and bikers will be able to read it at a distance. Place flyers at your local dog park, gas stations, stores — even the window of your car. Call your local shelters and vet clinics to see if your pup has turned up there. If not, you can take them a flyer to display in their lobby or on their bulletin board.

By Courtney Crowley

is one of a pet owner’s worst fears. You return home and I tdiscover someone left the backyard gate open. Or maybe your

mischievous pup dug a hole under the fence. Either way, you realize your furry family member is missing! The first thing to remember is not to panic. Although some dogs like to take a stroll around the block, most will return home. Check all around the house to make sure your pup hasn’t just found a cool spot outside the fence to relax. Once you verify your beloved pet is truly gone, the clock is ticking. Enlist friends and family members to help you search. Head first in the direction you usually walk your dog.

An ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure. Make sure Fido always wears a collar with your current contact information, vet rabies tag, and their name. Check that your pup’s name on the front of the tag is visible from a distance so a Good Samaritan trying to return him can call him by name as he approaches. Microchips are the best way to ensure your pet never leaves home without identification. Ask your veterinarian or local shelter about the microchip options. Some microchip companies require a yearly update and payment to keep the chip active, while others require no additional fees. Above all, stay positive and don’t give up hope. The use of technology has greatly increased owners’ ability to communicate and keep a search current. Many beloved pets are reunited with their loving families.

SENIOR MOMENT

Raconteur and Restaurant Owner By Amy Morgan

L

anny Dante saw the world in his years of U.S. Navy service and as an Army “brat.” Subsequently, he enjoys regaling acquaintances and young relatives with tales of his adventures. As a teen, he played on the basketball team on the Army base in Ethiopia, where his family was stationed. Amazingly, his flight home was forced to reroute to avoid the 6-day war in Beruit. When Lanny reached U.S. soil, he arrived in San Francisco at the height of the Flower Power era. “I landed, and the Beatles were playing Sergeant Pepper,” he remembers. “I had just come from the worst place in the world to the grooviest place in the world!” Exposure to the San Fran scene of the ‘60s and ‘70s developed Lanny’s love of music. After high school, he joined the Navy. Because that basketball coach in Ethiopia insisted his students learn how to type, Lanny was able to parlay his skill into a clerical assignment during Vietnam. Later, he spent a summer working on a shrimp boat in Kodiak, Alaska. In the 1970s, Lanny’s father retired from his 23-year military career. Lanny decided to join his parents and put down roots in the Alamo City. Although his mother and father hailed from opposite ends of the country – dad from New Jersey, mom from California – they shared their Italian-American heritage. In fact, his grandmother used to babysit Joe DiMaggio when they were kids, Lanny said, adding he is DiMaggio’s fifth cousin. It didn’t matter where in the world the family ended up, his mother kept Lanny and his three younger brothers happy by cooking the Sicilian family recipes. Once settled in San Antonio, Lanny’s mother drew from her culinary heritage and opened a coffee shop in the Tesoro Petroleum Building. Lanny was on her team from the beginning —cooking, working front of the house, and adding décor from his extensive collection of vintage movie posters and photographs. A year later, the family relocated the business to Converse. What started as a sandwich shop transitioned into Papa Dante Italian restaurant, which has been open for 40 years on FM 1976, close to Randolph Air Force Base. Although Lanny and his brother John’s family run the restaurant, their mother still kept the books until her death last year at age 89.

Lanny is up and out to Papa Dante by 5 a.m., every morning to prep the meatballs, set up the sauces, and bake the bacon for the restaurant.
