Grateful and Giving Back 7to7 Dental & Orthodontics provided school supplies, toys and this month, turkeys, to families in need.
By Amy Morgan
T
he holiday season prompts us to think about giving back, but few focus on that sentiment year round. 7to7 Dental & Orthodontics is one example of a local business that goes above and beyond to be a good neighbor and promote a culture of service to their community.
This is just one of the events DeZuba plans as part of his position with 7to7 Dental. In fact, the practice is so committed to corporate philanthropy, it is creating a 501c3 non-profit called the Dream Smile Foundation to fund even more efforts.
For example, last month Travis DeZuba, 7to7 Dental’s Marketing Director, agreed to serve as a Real Men Wear Pink ambassador. He was invited by the San Antonio branch of the American Cancer Society to fundraise for breast cancer research. DeZuba was on track to exceed his goal of $5000 by the Oct. 31 deadline, with sights on being the group’s top fundraiser. “This is the first time for me to do anything formal like this,” he said. DeZuba’s ace in the hole, enlisting the assistance of his friends at 7to7 Dental, which went all-out in support of the mission. Each of the five offices was festooned in pink streamers, technicians wore pink scrubs and gloves, and pink light bulbs gave everyone a rosy glow. The buzz in the office energized patients and staff alike to join in the project. DeZuba planned several incentives to encourage giving - patients who participated were eligible for a chance to win a pink Yeti cooler. Donations from staff accumulated chances to throw pink balloons filled with pink paint at the practice’s management team. And one lucky employee even was invited to use a high-powered balloon launcher to try to “paint” DeZuba pink. The coup de grace – because the staff met his fundraising challenge of $1500 in the first week, 7to7 Dental founder and CEO Justin Coke personally visited each office dressed in a pink wig and tutu as a reward.

Their flagship community service event falls on the third Saturday in February, when the office dedicates the services of its entire staff to provide free dental care to people who otherwise would not be able to afford it. Dubbed “Dental Hope,” last year they treated 250 patients and completed 600 procedures in one day. “We developed Dental Hope six years ago to provide free dental care to those in need. It’s our way of giving back to the community that has been integral in our growth,” said Coke. “My whole team just loves it.” “There are people who wait every year for this,” said managing partner Tiffany Winburn, D.M.D. “We start at 7 a.m., and whoever is in line by 3 p.m., is guaranteed to be seen. It has been extremely meaningful for all of us.”
7to7 Dental’s flagship project is Dental Hope where more than 250 patients received over 600 free procedures in one day.
“I’ve always loved helping people, and 7to7 Dental sees the bigger picture of contributing as a business,” he said. “The reason they got into this business was ultimately to take care of people. The owners’ hearts are to really impact the community.” This month, DeZuba spearheads a turkey give away for families served by SAMMinistries. “I thought it would be meaningful to give out turkeys,” he said, “because it is a more difficult item to provide – and you can’t really have Thanksgiving without a turkey.” He plans to enlist the resources of the 160 staff members and 30,000 patients and has committed to providing 100 turkeys. You can drop by the Stone Oak office on the corner of Stone Oak Parkway and Evans Road, which has been open for patients since April, to check out the Thanksgiving-themed decorations and contribute to the Turkey Give Away, or donate online at www.gofundme.com/7to7TurkeyDrive. DeZuba has 7to7 Dental’s Christmas project already planned – a toy drive for Blue Santa. Once again, the practice encourages employees to participate with fun in-centives, and the team wholeheartedly embraces the project. Last year they do-nated 1700 toys to the worthy charity.
Pictured (L-R) Bobby Hansen, Justin Coke, Travis DeZuba and Mike Burns pose with Blue Santa during their holiday party and toy collection drive last year.
In the fall, the office sponsored a school supply drive to benefit three elementary schools located near the offices. “We pulled up with hundreds of boxes of crayons, notebooks, backpacks, and the teachers were just blown away,” DeZuba said. “The kids are pumped when they see a Batman backpack – things their parents can’t afford.” 7to7 Dental & Orthodontics is so much more than just a dental practice – they are a committed community partner patients can rely on inside or outside of the office.

The staff at 7to7 Dental look forward to dressing up as Super Heroes for their patients. Batman is one of the more popular characters during this event to make going to the dentist more fun.

SENIOR MOMENT
Fun and Games Retired Recreation Specialist Shares with Community By Amy Morgan
ook into the balcony in the Clubhouse at Independence Village, and you’ll notice people gathered around several L tables. One of their own - Jerry Compton - organized a permanent area for fellow puzzle-loving residents to work several in progress there.
“We plan at least one puzzle weekend where we take the whole game room,” he added. Finished puzzles are shared throughout the other communities on the Independence Hill campus. This generous spirit typifies Jerry’s wife, Marcia, who also bakes cookies for other Independence Village neighbors. The energetic couple in their mid-70s moved to the Village three years ago from Virginia to be closer to their daughter, Meme. Jerry and Marcia keep a brisk schedule of activities at the Clubhouse – bingo, cards, Bunco, Bible study. They travel to Kansas City several times a year to see their son, Matthew, and visit the William Jewell College campus where they met on a blind date in 1964. Jerry played varsity basketball and baseball, and the couple remembers how the Kansas City Chiefs football players from the early NFL years would practice on campus in the preseason. They could tell the players were there, Marcia said, because they’d spot their luxury cars. After graduation and marriage, Jerry wrote one of the first master’s theses in recreation from Temple University. The draft board came knocking, but miraculously, he was sent to Germany instead of Vietnam, and Marcia was able to accompany him. That posting led to the couple spending 1969-78 in Germany, including seven years in civil service to the military, where Jerry organized sports activities. His work led to changes in the Army policy related to physical fitness tests.
Holiday Shopping
Extravaganza!
“You looked out of the window, and it was like a scene from The Sound of Music,” Marcia said. The couple enjoyed traveling and snapping up European antiques and treasures, many of which they display now in their home. “People wanted to get rid of things that reminded them of the war,” Jerry said. “They would almost give them away.” Upon returning to the states, Jerry worked as Director of Morale, Welfare and Recreation for the entire Army Training Command at Fort Monroe until 2004. Marcia started a cottage industry sewing intricate doll clothes to fit American Girl-sized dolls. They spent weekends stocking gift shops across the eastern seaboard with the designer duds. Now, Jerry umpires baseball throughout Central Texas. His favorite games are at Reagan, since the commute is just to the other side of the fence. The Comptons share a love of the game and watch the St. Louis Cardinals together. Jerry teaches Sunday School, and they enjoy worship at Bulverde Baptist Church with Meme and her family.

Reagan Football Leader Commits to SMU
By Amy Morgan
igh school football is steamrolling toward the playoffs, and as expected, Ronald Reagan High School’s varsity squad is in a strong position to prevail. One of this season’s leaders H is Lucas Eatman, a linebacker who puts the spark in Reagan’s defense. Standing 6’ 3”, weighing in at 210 pounds, Lucas was heavily recruited by Southern Methodist University. After several visits to the campus, Lucas committed to SMU in August, making him the only linebacker they’ll add to their 2019 roster. With pressure for his future alleviated, Lucas has been able to concentrate on Rattler football his senior year. “I didn’t want to be just a body in a uniform, but to find coaches who would stick by me and want me to play. I’ll get a chance to make a difference at SMU even as a freshman,” he said. Lucas’ parents advised him to choose a school he’d enjoy whether or not he was playing football, and they were well qualified to offer their opinion. His father, Irvin Eatman, played offensive tackle for the Kansas City Chiefs, then became an NFL offensive line coach. “It was an advantage, always having a coach at my side,” Lucas said about his father. “He and my mom have supported me the whole way. He wasn’t pushing me, he wasn’t that kind of dad, but he was always ready to help me out.” “Lucas has a great mom and dad and is definitely a product of their parenting,” said Reagan Head Football Coach Lyndon Hamilton. “He has a tremendous work ethic. He leads by example, and he is the same person on the field as he is off the field. He does things the right way, and his character speaks for itself.”
Reagan senior Lucas Eatman committed to SMU in August, making him the only linebacker they’ll add to their 2019 roster.
Hamilton noted the three-year letterman is a tremendous athlete and extremely versatile player, capable of playing both sides of the ball for Reagan if necessary. Lucas also was named All-District First Team Defense his junior year. The player moved often as a young child as the family followed his father’s NFL career. He started elementary school in Stone Oak in time to join the TYFA League Junior Jaguar tackle football team at age 10. Lucas was hooked on the sport after his first game, where he took a kickoff return back for a touchdown. “I got really excited about that!” he said. His goal for this season is to break his last year’s record of 88 tackles – he’s shooting for 100 with at least five sacks and three forced fumbles. And maybe, just maybe, a pick six and another chance to carry that ball into the end zone. We’ll be looking for Reagan’s number 5 to do just that.

Festive Feasting for Fido
Other human foods that can be allowed for your dog include pumpkin, blueberries, kale, kefir, mushrooms, broccoli, sardines, sweet potatoes, fermented vegetables and chia seed. Stay away from fatty or spicy foods, poultry bones, alcohol, chocolate and anything sweetened with xylitol.

oliday feasting is just around the corner, a time when friends H and families gather with traditional dishes. Can’t you almost taste that pumpkin pie, turkey or glazed ham? As much as you
relish your holiday favorites, keep a lookout for Fido, who may be waiting in the wings with his eye also on the prize. It is so tempting to want to share your goodies with your furry family members. Remember though, many people foods can make your pup sick – or even gravely ill. And who wants to clean up a pet’s tummy troubles in front of a house full of company. If you (or Uncle Ed) just can’t resist slipping your pup something from the table – check with you vet first to get an official ok. Don’t overwhelm Fido with a bunch of new things all at once, and start with a small quantity to see how it affects his digestive system. “Less is more” is a good rule of thumb. On the “ok” holiday list: turkey (with skin and bones removed), mashed potatoes, macaroni and cheese (light on the cheese), cranberry sauce and green beans. If fact, plain green beans are a wonderfully nutritious holiday leftover for your pup. Always check ingredients. That turkey stuffing or green bean casserole that seem so innocent may include things like onions or garlic. Larger quantities of onions can cause potentially dangerous anemia that may lead to organ damage or even death.

A better way to include your furry family member in the festivities might be to make them some special “holiday themed” treats of their own. This recipe by Proud Dog Mom will get you started. Easy Carrot and Sweet Potato Dog Biscuits Ingredients ½ cup carrots ½ cup baked sweet potato 1 egg 3 cups whole wheat flour ¾ cup water Instructions • Preheat oven to 350 • Line baking sheet with parchment paper • In a large bowl, add the flour, sweet potato, carrots, egg and water • Mix well • Knead until you get a big dough ball • Flatten out dough ball to about ¼’ in thickness • Cut out shapes with a cookie cutter, and place them onto the parchment lined baking pan • Bake at 350 for 30 minutes, until biscuits are golden • Cool • Store in an airtight container in refrigerator for up to 1 week or freeze for up to 3 months
Sharing the Spirit of the Season “The club members are very generous and responsive to the angel tree,” Debbie said. “Last year we donated more than one hundred presents.” While the chefs are busily preparing members’ Thanksgiving lunch, they also are arranging a very special “to-go” package –a complete holiday feast for 100 of San Antonio’s finest men and women in blue serving at the San Antonio police station. By Amy Morgan
begins the season of gratitude and N ovember thanksgiving. People’s thoughts turn toward ways they can reach out and make a difference in the lives of others. The Club at Sonterra has enthusiastically participated in that spirit of giving in many ways throughout the years.
One tradition begins before Thanksgiving, when staff members festoon a tree with “angel tags,” each listing a gift for a child that might otherwise not have a happy holiday. Members and their guests are treated to the sight of the tree as they head into the dining room with their friends and family to enjoy Thanksgiving brunch prepared by the chefs at the Club at Sonterra. Upon leaving, diners can select a tag from the angel tree to share their thanksgiving sentiments with others. This year, like last, the residents of St. Jude’s Ranch for Children (SJRC) in Bulverde will be the recipients of the presents provided by the club’s members. These gifts answer the wishes of the residents ages 5-21 who live at the center and will be the eagerly anticipated present the children open on Christmas morning, said Debbie Gonzaba, member relations director, who coordinates the event for the Club at Sonterra. Long-time Club at Sonterra member Bernard Jensen has worked closely with St. Jude’s Ranch for Children and was instrumental in advocating for the Club at Sonterra to focus its philanthropic efforts on this local ministry. “St. Jude’s Ranch for Children began when the Hamilton family purchased several acres in Bulverde to provide a safe haven to children in need. For nearly 30 years, SJRC Texas has been caring for the most vulnerable children and families facing abuse, neglect, and often homelessness, helping them to heal from the traumas they have suffered,” according to the ministry. Daily, SJRC cares for almost 100 children - striving to provide them with a happy childhood.
“For as long as I can remember, the Club at Sonterra has provided this traditional Thanksgiving meal as a thank you to San Antonio’s police officers,” Debbie said. “Our catering department makes sure there’s enough for everyone on each shift to be able to have a holiday dinner with all the trimmings.” This Thanksgiving season, follow the example of the Club at Sonterra and “pay it forward” to someone in gratitude for your blessings.
