¬Aquatic Accidents

The splash of a paddle, the purr of an outboard motor or the gentle roar of the

surf are the sounds of summer when temperatures reach triple digits. Before you plunge into one of Texas’ lakes, rivers or beaches, make a plan to ensure the safety of everyone in your party. And rest assured, the professionals at Physicians Premier freestanding emergency room, located west of Highway 281 on Highway 46 near the HEB Plus, are ready to help if an outing on the water doesn’t end up as planned.

Physicians Premier founding partner Lonnie Schwirtlich, M.D., has been an emergency physician for the past 42 years. An avid fisherman and surfer, he’s had the opportunity to participate in numerous water activities. He cautions parents never to leave children unsupervised around any type of water.

“It only takes five minutes for someone to drown and be past the help of resuscitation,” he said. He advocates making sure children learn to swim as early as possible. “You want them to be able to save themselves if they fall in the water for any reason,” Dr. Schwirtlich said. Motivation to sign your little ones up for swimming lessons immediately!

In case it’s an adult in trouble, Dr. Schwirtlich reminds a potential rescuer to throw a life jacket or rope to pull the person to shore. “Don’t just jump in,” he cautioned, because a person is liable to pull you down with them in their panic.

Put on that life preserver when in a boat or on a jet ski in case the craft overturns or you fall out. A flotation device will keep you buoyant, especially if you hit your head and are unable to swim. Likewise, never dive in water where you can’t see a possible obstruction or if the water is flowing, Dr. Schwirtlich warned. Even if you check for obstacles, a submerged log could drift into your landing spot while you are climbing up the cliff. A careless dive is not worth a broken neck!

When fishing or water skiing in fresh water, don’t drift too close to the shoreline – a prime nesting spot for Water Moccasins. These aggressive snakes will come after you if you disturb them. Their bite is poisonous and requires immediate treatment. If bitten, keep pressure and ice on the wound to prevent venom from spreading and head to the emergency room, Dr. Schwirtlich said.

Saltwater creates another hazard – the potential for flesh eating bacteria to penetrate the skin through a puncture wound caused by a hook, catfish spine or stingray barb. If you step on a stingray, their automatic response will be to immediately flip up their spiny tail. Dr. Schwirtlich speaks from experience when he reminds people to shuffle their feet when wading. Soak the affected area in water as hot as you can stand to relieve the pain and visit the ER for a course of doxycycline to prevent infection or worse.

Likewise, encountering jellyfish tentacles is an all-toocommon occurrence on Texas beaches. Did you know ammonia and meat tenderizer change the composition of the toxin and will relieve pain? Dr. Schwirtlich recommends spraying a stung area with window cleaner with ammonia D and then sprinkling on meat tenderizer.

You can relax this summer knowing that the professionals at Physicians Premier are ready to help if and when you need them, saving time, money, alleviating concern and allowing for a healthier patient and community. Find them at MDpremier.com.

Splish-Splash Summer

Summertime and cool water fun go together like iced watermelon and backyard barbecue.

Nothing sounds better than a refreshing plunge as we savor summer vacation days. Many pup parents enjoy spending time with their furry family members in the water. A number of rivers and lakes are close enough for an afternoon outing, and even the beach is not far from San Antonio.

Make a few preparations before you go to ensure your day is fun and safe for everyone in your family - human and canine. First, check out your destination. Not all swimming areas, parks and beaches allow animals, and you’d hate to be disappointed once you’ve arrived.

Next, in or out of the water, think about sunscreen, especially if your pup has short hair, white hair or pink skin. Dogs can sunburn just like their human family members! Apply dog-friendly sunblock anywhere your pet might burn before sun exposure. Choose a sunscreen that is dogsafe. Zinc oxide, a common sunscreen ingredient known by its thick consistency and white color, is toxic to dogs and can cause severe illness or death. If your dog tends to sunburn, it is best to avoid the sun between the peak hours of 10 a.m. – 2 p.m., and/or provide a shady respite.

Take time to introduce your furry family member to the water in a shallow spot under close supervision, and never leave him alone in the water. Not every dog is a natural born swimmer. Even if your pup can’t wait to dive in, observe the area just as you would for a child before letting him leap. Make sure currents aren’t too strong and no rip tides are present.

Cool Water Fun with Fido

Even the best swimmer can become overwhelmed when seas are rough or water is moving too quickly. A proven way to ensure your beloved pet’s safety in water is to have them wear a life vest.

Likewise, be wary of fishing gear, including abandoned nets, line or hooks. And steer Fido away from any washed-up water creatures. They may smell great a dog, but too close an investigation may produce an unwelcome outcome.

Bring fresh water so your pup isn’t tempted by thirst to drink from the ocean or in water contaminated by blue-green algae. Both can make him sick. Rinse your pup off after he’s been in any type of water. Seawater minerals, salt, chlorine, algae, and pollution can irritate or damage his skin and fur.

Some find it helpful to fill up a baby pool in the backyard for your pup’s initial introduction to water. Your whole pack might enjoy this opportunity to cool off together prior to venturing out further.

7to7 Dental Customizes Plan to Help Families Maintain Their Oral Health

Consistent, timely dental care is essential not just for a pretty smile, but to ensure overall health. Gum

disease caused by unchecked bacteria in the mouth has been linked to heart problems and respiratory infections, among other concerns. The professionals at 7to7 Dental & Orthodontics understand that sometimes the cost of dental care for the entire family can seem overwhelming. That’s why they developed their own membership plan for those who aren’t covered by dental insurance or for whom a family plan might be cost-prohibitive.

Three options meet any budget and need. Each covers two cleanings as well as X-rays and doctor exams. 7to7 Dental’s Silver plan costs just $20.99/month and includes discounts on fillings and extractions. Each subsequent family member can be added to a Silver plan for just $17/month. Gold and Platinum plans add benefits that include discounts on crowns, bridges, and implants. The Platinum plan includes a 10% discount on orthodontics, a savings that virtually covers the cost of the year’s routine dental care if someone needs braces or Invisalign.

Brandi Rose, 7to7 Dental’s membership coordinator, has been with the practice for five years. When 7to7 created its membership plans in 2021, they wanted to incorporate all the best options of a typical insurance plan without restrictive rules. Patients appreciate the differences. They can come in for an appointment at one of 7to7 Dental’s nine convenient locations 7 a.m.

to 7 p.m., 7 days a week. If they don’t have insurance, patients can join a plan on the spot and utilize their benefits with no waiting period. And 7to7’s plans don’t max out. If you need 10 crowns in a year, you can have all 10, with no waiting or price increase, Brandi added.

Unlike traditional insurance, 7to7 Dental will customize plans to meet each family member’s needs – individuals don’t all have to be on the same tier. “We are able to be more flexible,” Brandi said. Picture a scenario where a father’s company pays for his dental insurance but covering the family costs more than they can afford. That leaves mom and the kids lacking. What if Mom has four existing crowns, the 13-year-old is ready for braces, and the 8-year-old twins just need regular cleanings and exams. 7to7 Dental can put mom and the twins on the Silver plan to provide cleanings at the lowest price and upgrade the teenager to the Platinum plan to let the orthodontia discount offset his routine care. Should an emergency arise, say one of the twins takes a ball to the mouth at Little League, or mom cracks a crown, the individual can always upgrade on the spot.

The professionals at 7to7 Dental & Orthodontics care about your oral health and are available 7 a.m.- 7 p.m., seven days a week, for dentistry for the whole family and emergencies. 7to7 Dental is a local business grown in 15 years from the practice of one dentist and six staff, which now employs 262 San Antonio community members. CoOwners Tiffany Winburn, D.M.D., and Justin Coke live in Stone Oak with their families and are part of the community.

Scholarship Success

Johnson High School Senior Racks Up Record Awards, Will Attend School of His Dreams

Many students aspire for a college education, and for most, with a little hard work, that

dream can come to fruition. Some even parlay their top GPA and accomplishments into scholarships. But earning more than $1.2 million of financial aid ranks as a feat worth noting. Fortunate Johnson High School senior Brandon Vazquez Munoz’s awards will grant him the privilege of a no-cost college education. He’ll use his funds to attend Cornell University to study Mechanical Engineering this fall. Not only did Cornell and Columbia each offer him what amounted to a full ride, the Bill Gates Foundation also granted him close to $360,000 toward the college of his choice. Smaller awards from the San Antonio Legacy Foundation and Lockheed Martin bumped the total past $1 million – and continue to accumulate. Amazingly, the Bill Gates Foundation only selects 1.1% of the thousands who apply, Brandon said.

Brandon worked to be able to attend college for free to reduce the financial burden on his family, he said. He’s a first generation American, as his parents immigrated from the Jalisco region of Mexico close to Guadalajara. His father works as a flooring sub-contractor, and his mother stays home to raise Brandon and his two brothers. The family moved to San Antonio from California seven years ago.

Brandon credits Johnson’s AVID program with helping him accumulate such a monumental sum. AVID is a college prep class that provides students with support finding and qualifying for college scholarships. Brandon was introduced to AVID by his older brother, Anthony, a 2020 JHS graduate who received a scholarship to UTSA. Anthony graduated this spring – a full year early. Brandon served as student president of AVID’s 140 members, planning events like college visits and birthday celebrations. AVID teacher Ms. Garcia helped Brandon research schools and college programs, he said, and even recruited him to teach his classmates how to apply for the FAFSA. During the school year Brandon went out of his way to tutor AVID peers in math, a subject at which he excels, during his own lunchtime.

As one might imagine, Brandon’s no slouch when it comes to academics. His favorite class at JHS was

physics with Mr. Price, who he tapped as his Summa selection. When Brandon completed an engineering class project early, he and a friend designed and created remote control cars on the school’s 3-D printer. They hooked up the new parts to components of an existing model and were able to race their vehicles. RC cars aren’t the only thing Brandon has refurbished. In his free time, he enjoys putting together PCs from parts gleaned from yard sales, a hobby he began when he revamped his family’s defunct computer at the age of 11. He watched YouTube videos to diagnose the computer’s problem, eventually replacing its motherboard and restoring it to usefulness. Brandon wrote about these hobbies in the essays he submitted for scholarship consideration, as well as his desire to eventually create a non-profit to spread technology to under-represented areas such as those in Mexico where many of his family members remain. He noted his parents taught him the value of caring for others.

Brandon looks forward to becoming involved in math research at Cornell and hopes to participate in one of the school’s project teams that compete in engineering competitions nationwide – he’s particularly interested in the group that builds race cars and airplanes. The one thing he’s not quite sure about – Cornell’s winters in upstate New York close to the Canadian border. Who knows, the weather might inspire him to design some revolutionary gear to withstand the cold!
