Love it or List it Remodel Projects Add Value to your Home

By Amy Morgan

W

hether you’re looking to enhance your home’s livability or outshine competitors when listing for sale, Shaw Company Remodeling has been helping San Antonio families make dreams a reality for two decades. The owners of the top-rated, full-service residential construction and remodeling company, Eric and Carolyn Shaw, can steer you in the right direction to enjoy the highest return from your homeimprovement investment.

allows the cook to see all their spices, or an above-oven cabinet with vertical slats to easily house cookie sheets. Others ask for a slender kitchen closet to hide items like brooms and mops. Patrick recommends installing new cabinets as part of a kitchen or bathroom countertop upgrade, a remodel high on clients’ wish lists. Once stone countertops are affixed, it is very difficult to change cabinets later, he cautioned.

Custom upgrades add value, increase enjoyment of your home and help you maximize market value. Project Manager Patrick Voelkel, a Shaw cousin, offers advice about which projects prove profitable in Stone Oak. “People always gravitate to the kitchen,” he said. “New cabinetry makes a statement.” Most builders’ grade cabinets are not constructed of 100 percent wood and have been manufactured to a standard size. Shaw Company Remodeling works with craftsmen who build cabinets to order, ensure they are exactly the size, style and stain selected, and include elegant touches like full extension drawers, soft close hardware and top-of-the-line lacquer paint. And because they are constructed in house, cabinet completion time is much quicker than using prefab models with long production schedules. An added benefit, cabinets can be tailored to clients’ specific preferences and reflect their lifestyle. Perhaps the family members are tall — custom cabinets can be raised to a more comfortable height. Woodworkers can also add built-in storage: a pullout rack hidden in a drawer near the stove that

The Shaws know the business is only as good as its people. For that reason, Shaw Company Remodeling has carefully assembled a team of skilled remodeling craftsman who are trustworthy and customer-focused. The company is certified, has a 5-star service rating, great financing options, A ratings from the Better Business Bureau and Angie’s List and has been named a Nationwide Top 500 Remodeler. Visit the website at shawcoremodeling.com to view pictures of their completed work and read reviews from satisfied customers. Call 210-366-2380 now to schedule a consultation with the designers and builders you can trust for a fresh start for your home in the New Year.

Continuing with the theme of curbing clutter, Patrick has seen the laundry room/mudroom remodel grow in popularity. “Most people — even friends and neighbors — enter and exit the home through this high-traffic area,” he said. “We can do a lot to enhance its appearance and functionality.” He suggests creating a countertop of wood or granite over front-loading appliances to make better use of the space and tidy the area — no more lost socks behind the dryer! Shaw Company Remodeling’s contractors can create a nook for laundry baskets or a drop spot for the kids’ backpacks and shoes, streamlining family routines. Upgrading the master bathroom is another oft-requested project. Homeowners are replacing the standard garden tub/ prefabricated shower with either a standalone soaking tub or a walk in, all-tile, frameless glass shower with luxury fixtures like a rain head or wand. “There’s nothing like walking into a master bathroom that has a gorgeous, roomy shower. That changes your first stop every morning,” Eric said. Despite this year’s hot summer, San Antonio is usually known for its comfortable weather year round. Outdoor kitchens are a way to extend the family’s living area and provide a fun spot to entertain while keeping the mess outside. Shaw Company Remodeling can help with everything from constructing a patio to adding appliances, counters, sinks and fixtures. This includes installing fans or mister lines to cool a hot spot. Lastly, a coat of paint will go a long way to freshen up any space on a budget, removing smudges and updating colors. Shaw Company Remodeling will arrange for bonded, insured painters, one of a number of sub-contractors with whom they have cultivated long-standing relationships. The Shaws’ eldest daughter Brittany shares her decorating expertise at the company’s showroom located at 11943 Starcrest Drive, where samples of paint, tile, countertops, and fixtures are conveniently displayed to spark imagination. Brittany is available to help with design decisions and make the selection process painless.

C

rown of Life Lutheran Church is one of the oldest Christian congregations in Stone Oak and has been a pillar in the community since opening its current location at 19291 Stone Oak Parkway more than 30 years ago. Rev. Mark Barz was named Senior Pastor shortly after the congregation's inception. Longtime members can remember when the busy neighborhoods were mainly pasture, said Associate Pastor Chris Nuttelman. The church’s pre-school has welcomed the children of Stone Oak to learn and grow in the grace and love of Jesus for the past 25 years under the direction of its original teacher, Diane Dillow. Several of her colleagues have worked with her for more than 15 years, providing stability

Stone Oak residents might be familiar with the annual Touch-A-Truck sponsored by Crown of Life. The family-friendly event invites all in the community to engage with service and construction vehicles. A favorite of children and parents alike, attendance grew to more than 1500 people last year, a number noted by counting the $1 admission tickets, Pastor Nuttelman reported. The Air Life helicopter was a big draw- especially when it landed or took off, he said, as well as the tall cement boom truck that could be seen across Stone Oak. Other favorites: the food trucks and the FBI mobile crime unit. A traditional LCMS church, Crown of Life offers Divine Service at 8 and 10:45 a.m., Sundays. Fellowship time begins at 9 a.m., with song, birthday celebrations and refreshments, before Sunday School and Bible classes for all ages begin at 9:30 a.m. The Lutheran faith follows the example of Martin Luther to recentralize Jesus in the beliefs and practice of the church, Pastor

Nuttelman explained. “We focus on Jesus, his work for us on the cross and the work he still does in his Church: cleansing us from our sins and sanctifying us by his word,” he said. “The Divine Service is where God calls us into his presence.” Children are welcome to attend worship with their parents, although a nursery and cry room are available for those who wish. The Divine Service includes weekly Holy Communion and often, choral music. Middle and high school youth return Sunday afternoons for programs tailored to them: confirmation lessons for the younger ones, fellowship, teaching, food and service projects for those in high school. Recently, members of the congregation joined with St. Paul Lutheran in downtown San Antonio to assist in refurbishing that church’s thriving thrift shop. Crews cleaned, painted, repaired cement and planted flowers to invigorate inner-city outreach. Families will feel welcome and supported at Crown of Life Lutheran Church in their mission to raise their children to follow Jesus in the Lutheran tradition.

World Changer

Reagan Senior Student Ensures Recognition for Marginalized By Amy Morgan

R

onald Reagan High School senior Jocelyn Epstein is noted as one of the school’s most socially-conscious students by peers and teachers alike. Her drive to make the world a better place evidences itself in her leadership not only in clubs at the high school level, but throughout our city. Jocelyn holds offices in several of Reagan’s organizations promoting positivity and inclusion of the marginalized. She serves as president of the Empowerment Club and spearheaded Kindness Week, planning events to uplift the school’s culture. She promotes the Thrive Youth Center at Haven for Hope to increase awareness of homelessness and encourage compassion and a spirit of generosity. Jocelyn represented Reagan’s Unity Club at a district-wide conference to promote diversity and recognize those who may be excluded from the mainstream. “It is important Reagan not be a place of exclusion,” she said. “With so many organizations, people can get lost in the margins. We should always be doing our best to prevent that.” Her suggestions included a project where members of the National Spanish Honor Society sold bracelets made by artists in Nicaragua and Guatemala to support education and fair trade in Central America. She Jocelyn Epstein enjoys solving problems creatively through engineering and hopes to pair her interests in social also planned a Power to Love event in February to educate peers about issues in the community like youth activism with her STEM strengths in her future career. homelessness. She serves as president of the Spanish National Honor Society and has qualified for the UIL State CX Debate tournament and the National Speech and Debate Tournament – the highest levels of their respective circuits. She credits the research she completes for debate as her catalyst for social awareness. She feels a great responsibility to transform her school and community for the better. “Even if I can’t change problems on a global scale now, I can learn strategies that will enable me to help others,” she said. Despite her success in language and forensics, Jocelyn believes her strengths lie in math and science. She completed an internship at Southwest Research Institute where she participated in research on prosthetic design. She enjoys solving problems creatively through engineering, she said, and hopes to pair her interests in social activism with her STEM strengths in her future career. Fittingly, she plans to study engineering at a competitive university. Elsewhere in the community, Jocelyn regularly attends Agudas Achim congregation and serves as the President of the United Synagogue Youth for San Antonio, which connects Jewish students with likeminded peers. She has volunteered summers since she was 14 as a counselor at Camp CAMP, a sleepaway camp for kids with special needs, which she describes at the highlight of her summers. “Camp CAMP is amazing because we get to make the summer camp experience accessible to campers of all different abilities,” she said. “I always am so amazed by the great people I get to spend time with.” Jocelyn’s older sister, Sabrina, graduated from Reagan in 2017 and now attends Johns Hopkins University. Her 10-year old brother is a fifth grader at Vineyard Ranch elementary.

BUSINESS OF THE MONTH

Let There Be Light Window Genie Takes the Hassle Out of Holiday Decorating

By Amy Morgan

T

he holidays are fast approaching. Decorative outdoor lighting is one of the most visible signs of the season. Who doesn’t love the warm glow of festive lights brightening the dark winter evenings? But installing the holiday decor is an altogether different matter. Although the movies Christmas Vacation and Christmas with the Kranks paint a humorous picture, getting those lights up is easier said than done. And even worse, they must be taken down at the end of the season. In reality, the risk of accidents is no laughing matter. Ladder incidents are the leading cause of home-related injuries. Avoid the risk and hassle — call the holiday light professionals at Window Genie of North San Antonio. Stone Oak resident Jay Beyler purchased the city’s only Window Genie franchise several years ago. He and his staff of professionals design, supply, install, maintain, remove and store holiday lights for residential and commercial clients. They use high-quality, longlasting LED lights direct from the manufacturer. Each strand is custom- fit, leaving nothing dangling from the roof. Window Genie uses energy efficient LED bulbs with high-quality components resistant to Mother Nature’s elements.

In addition to outlining your structure, they’ll add exterior garland to your front door, light posts or pillars and custom design lighted LED wreaths ranging from three to five feet in size. Window Genie provides a hassle-free experience that includes a three-year, no worries warranty and prompt service as needed, with NO CONTRACT required. Field technicians are fully insured and bonded, which protects customers from liability for damage or injury.

8

“We are a full-service, turnkey company,” Jay said. “We’ll customize the lights to fit your home’s unique shape and take care of them from start to finish until you are ready to hang them the next year.” Estimates start at $499, and prices are discounted in subsequent years for repeat customers. Holiday lighting is just one of the services Window Genie provides. Jay and his technicians are available year round for window cleaning and tinting, gutter cleaning, as well as power washing. Customer service is the hallmark of his franchise, Jay said, noting he can train a technician to perform a task, but the ability to build relationships with clients and take care of their needs is the higher priority. Satisfied customer Andreia posted a Google review, “Window Genie is a reliable, friendly, professional company dedicated to serving the customer to 100% satisfaction. I love this company, and have referred them to others, knowing they too will be happy with their expertise!” Jay is scheduling consultations now with clients to customize designs for homes or businesses. Call 210-787-4959 or find him at Windowgenie.com/north-san-antonio. The results will be a professional, inviting product that provides a unique, custom look for your property. You’ll win the neighborhood decoration contest without falling off the roof!

SENIOR MOMENT

Hand in Hand Independence Hill Couple Creates Artwork, Crafts Together By Amy Morgan

C

yrus and Louise Bradshaw have been walking together through life since they wed in 1956. They’ve been each other’s constant companion through 63 years, five children and eight grandchildren. Even now, the couple remains so close they finish each other’s sentences as they enjoy their senior years at Independence Hill Retirement Community. The Bradshaws met on a blind date in El Paso, where Cy was completing his Army service at Fort Bliss and Lou was studying Theology in college. Cy’s proposal was more attractive than her last few hours of class, she said, so they married and traveled with his civil engineering career. Lou was able to take a china painting class once they settled in North Central San Antonio, close to their home parish of St. Mark the Evangelist Catholic Church, where they still attend. She was inspired by her mother, Cyrus and Louise Bradshaw sit on the who enjoyed creating porcelain art herself, but the real catalyst was the wife of one of back porch of their home at Independence Cy’s co-workers, who introduced Lou to painting teacher Frances Parks. Hill Retirement Community. Louise holds one of her favorite china plates From the first class Lou was hooked. She developed her skill, the results of which are she painted. now displayed throughout the couple’s home. She is particularly fond of a collection of four china plates depicting homes where her mother lived and a 24-piece nativity set that she painted by hand. Lou still keeps a small kiln that can fire 6-inch plates or mugs. As time progressed and their children grew, Lou and Cy became friends with other artists. Lou even recruited professionals to teach art seminars for fellow painters. They remember the Riverwalk craft fairs in the 1970s when they were just beginning. Not only did she exhibit her porcelain work, she and Cy are proficient at other types of handicrafts. Lou creates wooden crosses and ornaments using a scroll saw, and Cy is an accomplished woodworker. The two shared a garage/workroom in the Stone Oak home where Cy made hand tooled furniture. A plant stand and recipe box traveled with them to Independence Hill, but Lou says his most impressive piece is a freestanding, lined jewelry cabinet Cy made for their daughter. The Bradshaws share fond memories of working side-by-side with favorites like Antiques Roadshow and American Pickers playing on the TV in the background. Lou offers the results of her talents at Independence Hill’s annual Holiday Bazaar. She pairs well with friend Juanita, with whom she shares a table. The two couples dine together most evenings. This year, the Holiday Bazaar, which is open to the public, will be held December 4, from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Lou played an important role in the Alzheimer’s Association Painting for a Cause fundraiser last year. She was one of the Independence Hill residents who painted together in September. Lou’s painting raised one of the higher sums of the entries sold at auction. “I had never done anything like that,” she said. “I felt brave.” Never one to remain idle, Lou plays bingo and Bunco and continues to create items for the bazaar. For more information on the lifestyle offered at Independence Hill, call (210) 764-5260, or go to www.independencehill.com.

STAFF PROFILE

Best Practices 7to7 Dental & Orthodontics Spearheads Holiday Giving year round. This month, 7to7 Dental will once again donate 150 full-size turkeys to families in need served by SAMMinistries. Patients, staff and community members pitched in to provide the turkeys last year, said Travis DeZuba, 7to7 Dental’s marketing director. Travis wanted to ensure 7to7 Dental’s efforts would meet a critical need and thought it would be meaningful to donate turkeys, because although they are the main feature of a Thanksgiving meal, they are also more difficult to provide. Green Oasis Plantscapes loaned the practice one of their large vehicles to transport the birds to the ministry’s downtown location. To get involved, drop by the Stone Oak office at on the corner of Stone Oak Parkway and Evans Road to check out the Thanksgiving-themed decorations and contribute funds to the Turkey Give Away, or donate on line at www.gofundme.com/7to7TurkeyDrive. Additionally, Travis served as a Real Men Wear Pink ambassador fundraising for breast cancer research. His fundraising target was $7000. Travis enlisted the support of the entire 7to7 Dental community in his quest. Each of the six locations decorated with pink steamers, and pink light bulbs, and staff donned pink gloves and scrubs. The excitement in the office reminded the more than 180 employees and 34,000 patients to donate for the cause. By Amy Morgan to7 Dental & Orthodontics was recently named San Antonio’s Best Large Company ompany at which to work in a contest sponsored by the Business Journal. The media outlet weighed not just employee feedback, but also the percent of those who took the time to complete the extensive survey.

7

One reason the staff of the six locally owned and operated dental offices love their work is the practice’s commitment to be a good neighbor and promote a culture of service to their community

As an extra incentive, Travis held a drawing for two 14th row tickets to the November 16 Spurs v Trail Blazers game. Every five-dollar donation earned an entry into the drawing. Smaller prizes were also awarded. Especially motivating to staff, Co-Owner Justin Coke, Travis and two other employees pledged to stand on the corner of Bandera and U.S. Highway 1604 (near 7to7 Dental’s Braun Road location) during the evening commute Oct. 27, dressed in pink dresses and wigs. “I’ve always loved helping people, and 7to7 Dental sees the bigger picture of contributing as a business,” Travis said. “I see how impactful it can be to help someone experiencing a low point in life. I am happy if I can be a small link in that chain, and the hearts of Justin and Co-Owner Tiffany Winburn, D.M.D., also are to impact the community. They live and work here, too.” 7to7 Dental & Orthodontics is so much more than just a dental practice – it is your committed community partner, both inside and outside the office.

Fido’s Favorite Family Movies

sure to have your spirits lifted and hug your furry family member a little tighter. You might even be inspired to share your popcorn. Here are some titles to get you started: Beethoven 1 and 2 - Fall in love with a Saint Bernard and laugh along as the Newton family undertakes raising a puppy — or maybe four. It’s always an adventure as the owners encounter way more slobber and hair than they can handle. My Dog Skip - Skip, a Jack Russell Terrier, becomes a young boy’s best friend. You’ll share the laughs and heartaches as they journey through life together and you witness the power of a dog to change a family.

Homeward Bound and Homeward Bound 2 -The family pets, a cat and two dogs, become lost and must journey for miles in the wilderness in the hope of rejoining their family. (Spoiler notice – despite the peril, all is well in the end.) Similarly, in Eight Below, a blizzard isolates a group of sled dogs. They must survive Alaska’s terrain and wildlife to return to their mushing handler.

ou’ve had a long week at work, and you just want to cuddle up on the couch with your canine companion and watch a feel-good movie. What better theme than one featuring Fido’s four-legged friends? Whether you select a comedy or a film with more serious elements, you’re

Marley and Me - Any pet parent of a retriever knows the “puppy stage” can last for several exuberant years. Marley, a yellow lab pup, exemplifies these wild and wacky times as he creates chaos in his new family while teaching them the importance of life and love. A caveat – Marley and Me is a tearjerker. The story continues as the family’s beloved companion reaches the end of his life. Likewise, A Dog’s Purpose and A Dog’s Journey recount Buddy the dog’s story as he is reincarnated throughout the lifetime of the human with whom he originally bonded. Racing in The Rain - Newly released in theaters this year, this film is one to move to the top of your short list. Enzo, a golden retriever, is brought home by a racecar driver. Told from the dog’s perspective, Enzo immediately feels at home at the track and hopes one day to become a racecar driver himself. Each of these titles should be appropriate for most family members, although check the ratings. Be sure to take a stretch break after binge watching “pet flicks” so you and your family members — furry and human — can burn off that popcorn.
