A Letter to the Community
INDEX
Welcome to The People’s Pride! Fifty years ago, members of the LGBTQIA+ community in New York’s Greenwich Village refused to succumb to yet another police raid of the Stonewall Inn. With their spontaneous act of rebellion against a system that would not accept them, they launched the Stonewall Uprising and effectively ushered in the modern movement for LGBTQIA+ rights. The 1969 Stonewall Uprisings were protests against police brutality; but more so protests representative of the communal frustration against the injustices enacted on a people: the LGBTQIA community. The theme of the Stonewall Columbus 2022 Pride Festival and March is “The People’s Pride: Pride Belongs to the People”. In the state of Ohio, our community can still be denied or evicted from housing or fired from our jobs just because of our sexual orientation or gender identity, so it is important for us to stand up and make our voices be heard. We stand ever firmly in line with the BIPoC members of our community, we stand shoulder to shoulder with our transgender community members, of all ages, we stand at the ready to uplift and make space for all members of our LGBTQIA+ community and all our communities that demand inclusion, full enfranchisement, and equality before the law. Stonewall is doing to work to remind our communities, queer and not queer, that our Pride is about the PEOPLE. It’s about the marginalized, unseen, underappreciated, under-serviced identities in our LGBTQIA+ community who have to continue to fight for equity and equality and it is about celebrating and honoring those who have fought to get us here; those who risked, and risk, their lives simply by living their truth. When we held the first Columbus Pride march back in 1981, there were only a couple hundred people in attendance. Today, more than 11,000 marchers and 500,000 spectators will take over the streets of Columbus to pay tribute to all who fought and died for us to love boldly and live freely!

We are here today because of the generations before us who fought and sacrificed to get us here–who created spaces for us to be seen. Be proud of who you are, be proud of the changes you’ve made, be proud of the changes you’ve yet to make, celebrate those who have come before, make spaces safe for those who will come after and in this moment live out loud and be proud because Pride belongs to the people! PRIDE HONOREE
Lisa McLymont/Pride Circles (She/her/hers) Lisa McLymont is a multidisciplinary artist, graphic designer & social justice advocate. Lisa’s art is mainly expressed through drawing and painting, welcoming curiosity to explore many directions knowing that each new experience provides insight while creating work that connects past and future worlds. Lisa has two ongoing portrait series, “The Universe Tribe”, & “The Odes”, focused on nuances within identity and inspired by the powerful communicative styles of protest posters and dreamy expressionism. Pride Circles by Columbus, Ohio artist Lisa McLymont is the first ever permanent public art installation to be installed in the public right-of-way in the City of Columbus where the public is invited to traverse the art as they pass. Commissioned by the Short North Alliance, in partnership with Stonewall Columbus, Pride Circles is a representation of a few of the many pride and identity flags in the LGBTQ+ community represented in the form of a pond of unified ripples. Pride Circles reimagines the gateway into Central Ohio’s LGBTQ+ community center, home to our nonprofit’s Short North Arts District headquarters, it works to elevate an understanding of the ways in which small acts can result in big change and the unique interconnectedness of the LGBTQ+ community.

Stonewall Columbus’ 2022 Patron of Pride
PATRON OF PRIDE
Carmen Carrera (She/her/hers)
In the early morning hours on June 28, 1969, it is said that Marsha P. Johnson and Sylvia Rivera symbolically launched the LGBTQ+ Pride movement when they, and their counterparts, fought back against continued police brutality—they were fed up. They were fed up with having their community’s humanity, livelihoods, and lives taken away in public sight. One unexpected morning Johnson and Rivera became special guardians—patrons of Pride! Our shared experiences as LGBTQ+ identities unite us in our story, and it should be our individual right for happiness that binds us in our fight for equity and equality. At our core each of us wants to be seen as valued individuals who are part of a larger community; a community that if not embraces at least respects our individuality. Stonewall Columbus’ Patron of Pride is an individual who has fought to ensure the community is not only present but seen, simply by living their truth—out loud and proud. As Stonewall lives into its 40th year what better moment than now to map a new course to a destination that works for all and each of us—a destination that embraces our commonalities, respects our differences, and champions our individual identities. In our fortieth year, we want to help reignite a passion in our community for fighting the hardest for those forced against the margins; for those whose voices have been systemically silenced by a system that sees otherness as a challenge to their systems of power. As we continue to shift PRIDE from a moment to a movement, something we uplift all year long, and return it to the people in this second year Stonewall Columbus honored to recognize Carmen Carrera as the 2022 Patron of Pride. Carrera was born in Elmwood Park, New Jersey. In 2011, she appeared in the third season of the reality television competition show, RuPaul’s Drag Race. As a featured model, Carmen has walked shows at New York City Fashion Week and Miami Swim Week. In fact, she was the first transgender model to ever walk at Miami Swim Week.
2022 PATRON OF PRIDE CARMEN CARRERA Carrera has also been active in AIDS awareness and activism. After being featured in a Gilead Sciences ad titled “Red Ribbon Runway” with fellow Drag Race co-stars Manila Luzon, Delta Work, Shangela Laquifa Wadley, and Alexis Mateo, the dress she wore was auctioned by Logo in commemoration of World AIDS Day. In 2014, Carrera was included as part of the Advocate’s annual “40 under 40” list; that same year Carrera was featured on the fifth anniversary cover of C?NDY magazine along with thirteen other transgender women: Janet Mock, Laverne Cox, Geena Rocero, Isis King, Gisele Alicea, Leyna Ramous, Dina Marie, Nina Poon, Juliana Huxtable, Niki M’nray, Pêche Di, Carmen Xtravaganza and Yasmine Petty. Carrera had identified as a gay man, and continued to present as such during filming of the third season of RuPaul’s Drag Race, but began her gender transition when she concluded filming. She is of Puerto Rican-Peruvian ancestry.

PRIDE HONOREES Stonewall Columbus’ 2022 Leader(s) of Pride
The Trans Visibility Project (photographer Emma Parker) (She/her/hers) The Stonewall Columbus Leader(s) of Pride recognizes an individual, or individuals, who use their voice(s) to speak up and out—boldly and loudly in support of members of the LGBTQ+ community in Columbus, Ohio and beyond. Nominees must have somehow inspired some form of collective action in or around the Central Ohio LGBTQ+ community. Through intimate visually imagery the Trans Visibility Project allows the subjects to share their visual identity stories as they so choose. Launched in 2022 the exhibition first went on display last fall and just finished a run at the Columbus Metropolitan libraries Main branch. The show will have limited run at the Stonewall Center through the end of June.
a
We are honored to recognize the Trans Visibility Project’s work in “welcoming one of the most marginalized communities and making them VISIBLE.”
Stonewall Columbus’ 2022 LINDA SCHULAR SERVICE AWARD
Suzie Simpson (She/her/hers)
Dedicated on the occasion of her 75th birthday, May 25, 2021, the Linda Schuler Service Award was created in honor of Linda Schuler in recognition and celebration of her many years of service to Stonewall Columbus and the local Columbus LGBTQ+ community. For years Linda committed herself to ensuring there is a place for our community’s trailblazers by facilitating our Trailblazers program and served tirelessly as the Pride March Chair bringing to march to it’s well over 10,000 participants. In 2021 the Stonewall Board of Trustees was honored to recognize Linda Schuler as the inaugural recipient of the Linda Schuler Service award. An award created to recognize a trailblazing longtime volunteer who selflessly promotes acceptance and community. As a Center volunteer, Center staff member, and dedicated pride committee member—even serving as entertainment booker for several years. Suzie Simpson has dedicated herself to the LGBTQ+ community here in Columbus and across the region through her engagement with Stonewall Columbus. We are so thankful for all that Suzie has done and continues to do—this year we recognize Suzie Simpson as the 2022 Linda Schuler Service Award recipient.

VISION: An Ohio where ALL of US thrive. VALUES: History. Visibility. Inclusion. Connection. Accountability. Stonewall Columbus was founded in 1981 with the goal of “increasing the visibility and acceptance of the gay, lesbian, bisexual, and transgender (GLBT) community.” During Stonewall’s 40-year existence, Columbus, and the LGBTQ+ community has changed. The City of Columbus is now the 14th largest city in the country and recognized as one of the most LGBTQ+ friendly cities in the United States. In addition to an evolving array of programs Stonewall produces Lavender Listings, a listing of local products and services from LGBTQ+ friendly businesses and organizations, and Columbus Pride; started in 1981 Pride now welcomes over 700,000 visitors to the Columbus region. As the community has changed so has Stonewall’s mission and vision–now to “increase visibility, inclusion, and connection for the LGBTQ+ community so we see a community where ALL of US thrive.” As we forge ahead, we will… • always remember our history as we build our future brick by brick; • be visible, reminding the world that we are strong, vital members of humanity; • be inclusive, because we know what it means to be left out; • be connected, linking needs to resources and people to one another; • stand up for everyone in our community, regardless of sexual orientation, gender identity and/or expression, sex, age, race, color, national origin, religion, military status, familial status; or disability. PROGRAMS AND SERVICES Stonewall aims to be an organization that serves the full spectrum of our LGBTQ+ rainbow, Stonewall is a vital hub for providing access to information and resources that address the needs of the LGBTQ+ community. Each year, the Stonewall Center welcomes over 10,000 visitors and provides connections to services for nearly 40,000 people, prioritizing programs for the most vulnerable among us. Stonewall is proud to have 500+ volunteers and partner with numerous local organizations. In addition to programs like the Trailblazers and Pride our strategy will always be to work closely with existing community organizations to identify gaps in services that we can fill and create timely initiatives where Stonewall’s community-wide reach brings added value. 62 | 2022 PRIDE GUIDE
