About the McConnell’s From deer and dairy farming families, Brent and Juanita both worked their way up from humble beginnings, working from an early age after early mornings milking cows soon led to a family of three daughters. Weekends consisted of taking their girls out into New Zealand’s Native Bush attempting to secure a small deer to show their family what it means to provide. This passion for providing is important to Brent and Juanita, to teach their family the respect for the species of animal, the history of the land, and how to cook and serve what has been harvested has always been important. They believe it is key that their family understand why we go hunting/fishing and to be constantly thankful for the opportunities we are blessed with. Brent and Juanita decided it was time to leave dairy farming and invested in an outdoors apparel and equipment company called Stoney Creek, moving their family to Tauranga. This unlocked many opportunities for the McConnell’s. Today Brent and Juanita are proud to have the same opportunity to help others unlock their passion for hunting whilst also hoping to provide a great family atmosphere, one welcoming to you and your guests. They hope to help you experience the greatness that New Zealand has to offer, while helping you secure that trophy you have always dreamed of. Kuranui will guarantee you an unforgettable experience with world class hospitality no matter who you are, and where you are from. Ella, (21) Paris, (18) and Zarah (15) are the three daughters of Brent and Juanita McConnell. Raised on the land, these girls were riding horses, driving motorbikes and hunting as soon as they were able. Growing up they were often challenged with being girls in a ‘male dominated’ hunting industry. But that didn’t stop them, learning from the two generations of deer farmers and hunters before them these McConnell girls grew to learn, provide and overcome that barrier. Blessed with the opportunity to hunt New Zealand’s native bush, the girls’ favorite species hunt is the New Zealand Red Deer. The eldest daughter Ella, is a passionate hunter who loves grasping any opportunity she can to get outdoors, Paris loves to be out on the water and chase big game fish such as marlin, and Zarah is an avid horse rider and loves to take her pony through Kuranui’s native bush trails all over the property. Just as the opportunities given to them, the McConnell girls strive to hope that everyone who enters Kuranui walks away with an unforgettable world class experience and premium trophy.

SPECIES LIST

Often referred to as the ‘King’ of New Zealand Deer species, the majestic Red stag is the dominant ruler of Kuranui Estate.

Red Stag: (Cervus elaphus) The Red Stag is the most sought-after New Zealand game animal, this mighty species is recognized by hunters worldwide. Here at Kuranui we can guarantee that the level of hunting experience will exceed your expectations and ignite your passion for the outdoors whilst providing a world class experience. The Red Stag or (Reds) are the most desired game animal to hunt all over New Zealand. Taking refuge in our native bush, their red coats, and grand antlers make for a magnificent trophy. The Red Stags antlers become blackened, by rubbing on our native Manuka bushes which are prevalent here in the central North Island of New Zealand. The Red Stag is aggressive in nature with its premium grade antlers, no two red stags are the same, unlike Elk so this guarantees you your very own unique trophy. Although they are grand animals, the Red Stag is often found defending its territory.

the prominent hunting season in New Zealand, the excitement of hearing the characteristic guttural, roaring challenge of the mating stags. This continual symphony persists day and night with many dominant stags engaging in fierce battles.

Often referred to as the ‘King’ of New Zealand Deer species the majestic Red stag is the dominant ruler of Kuranui Estate. The ‘Roar’ is what we refer to as the Rut in New Zealand. From Early March through April and trailing off in May, the Red Stag can be heard echoing through Kuranui Estate. This time is

The meat harvested from deer is called venison. Here at Kuranui you will often have the opportunity to dine on our free range venison. It is an absolute family favorite here at Kuranui Estate. Once you have secured your world class Red Stag, if desired we will advise of local taxidermists for your trophy.

Originating from England and Europe British stock the Red Stag was introduced to New Zealand between 1851 and the early 1900’s. Mature Red Stags range from the weight of between 400 and 500 lbs. This species is hardened to the conditions of New Zealand making them very hardy and resilient animals. We recommend calibres no less than .270 for you to secure your trophy Red Stag. The option of .30 cal is ideal in 308, 30.06 or WSM and Magnums and Ultramags also work well.

Rusa: (Rusa timorensis) Here at Kuranui we have some of the finest trophy Rusa in New Zealand with some carrying incredible ‘droptynes’ . Rusa are a magnificent species of deer, with unique sharp pointed antlers. The shape of these antlers differs from other species of deer in New Zealand.

fierce and occasionally fatal. They are extremely agile and love to fit through thin narrow gaps of native bush, because of these habits Rusa are frequently seen carrying entire scrubby bushes on their heads and appear to love having vegetation wrapped around their antlers.

Although our herds of Rusa were brought into New Zealand from New Caledonia in the 1950s, Rusa originally came from Java. As a species, they lack a down covering in their coats, unlike other deer. Because of the lack of warmth their coat is able to generate, Rusa reside in the warmer regions of the Central North Island. Making them rarer to hunt and locate throughout New Zealand, here at Kuranui we are blessed to offer this rare opportunity for those looking for a oneof-a-kind trophy. There are only a specific amount of Rusa that are able to be hunted each year, to support further generations of population growth.

With brown grey coats Rusa merge very easily with their environment. Their antlers are typically six points, three per side. A stag will tilt them along his back when he runs making it relatively easy for even a large animal to disappear rapidly burrowing through brush and scrub. They are usually found on sunny slopes but are elusive and secretive and among the most challenging trophies to hunt. They can test the stealth of even the most experienced hunter. Rusa meat is also the key to making a divine range of salamis.

Rusa begin their key hunting season, (the rut) in June through to July. Since this species has not adapted to our Southern Hemisphere, their mating season is slightly later than usual deer species. The Rusa’s distinctive call is followed by a raspy Red-style growl that has Elk-like characteristics. Rusa Stag fights are

Fallow are a magnificent species of deer, with a range of different color coats

Fallow: (Dama dama) Fallow Bucks are one of Kuranui’s most stunning deer, standing with a large paddled spread of antlers. The Fallow Buck is a magnificent species of deer, with a range of different color coats from pure black, grey/brown, spotted fawn to white. The Fallow Buck is known for its incredible stature and ‘paddled’ unique palmated antler formation, similar to a moose. This unique antler makes the species sought-after and here at Kuranui we are proud to have the opportunity to offer you a challenging yet rewarding experience hunting down this stunning beast. As the Fallow deer is a park animal, they enjoy being in large groups grazing clearings. However, this animal is extremely smart and is one of the most difficult animal to hunt. With its enhanced senses, every hunter must be hunting to the best of their ability. New Zealand Fallow Deer originated from Denmark, Hungary and England and were introduced into New Zealand in the 1860’s, 10

18

years after the introduction of the Red Deer species. The Fallow Buck begins its rut in April through to May. This season is thrilling for those hunters looking for a challenge. The Fallow Bucks mating call is called a ‘Croak’ this call is distinctive and unique. You can expect to hear a cross between a rapid cough, and grunt when the Fallow Buck is challenging others. This animal is also known to put up a magnificent fight during their rut season. As Fallow are much smaller than a typical Red Stag, a lighter calibre of rifle can be used, such as .223, .243, .260, .270 or .308. Fallow meat is one of the most popular and delicious types of venison, due to their grass grazing diet and therefore is one of the most commonly served and popular here amongst the chef’s at Kuranui.

Sika: (Cervus nippon) Sika Deer are notorious for being one of the most intelligent species of deer here in New Zealand, local hunters often call them ‘the cunning sneaky masters of concealment’. Originating from Asia our Sika were introduced into New Zealand’s native bush from a heard in England in the early 1900’s. When deer are young, they are born with brown and white spotted coats, most species loose these spots as they reach the age of one. Sika deer however, are one of the few species of deer that do not completely lose their spots. Their coats change from a beautiful chestnut with creamy spots to an almost brown grey in winter. This makes Sika a top choice for hunters seeking this magnificent coat.

Sika Stags have grand brown antlers commonly with four points on each side. The Sika rut begins in April, when they will be heard bellowing through the trees calling their mates and challenging contesters. The Sika calls others with what hunters refer to as a ‘honk’ which can be expected to sound like a series of donkey honks. Patience is key to hunting this species of deer. Like Fallow deer they are extremely wary with heightened senses and prove an encouraging challenge for those hunters willing. This proud yet intelligent trophy is a world class hunting experience for the passionate patient hunter. Sika meat is known as the sweetest type of venison.

Although a native of the Himalayas in Nepal, they were introduced into New Zealand in 1904 by the Duke of Bedford from his small herd at Woburn in England. New Zealand is the only country that has free range Tahr outside their natural home, which offers us an amazing opportunity to give you the opportunity to hunt this rare breed. In the South Island of New Zealand these animals have adapted, flourished and are prolific in our Southern Alps environment. Their thick coats and mane cover the bull Tahrs entire body. This coat helps them to thrive in the extreme cold New Zealand elements. Long distant shots can be expected when hunting Tahr, as they take home in mountain ranges, and love the mountainous terrain. Tahr are often spotted hopping vertically from cliff to cliff. A well zeroed rifle with good optics is a must when chasing this species. 7mm or 30 cal magnums are ideal but .270 or 30.06 still work well. We will provide the option to a precision loan rifle. Young nanny meat is a delicacy and when available is savored here at Kuranui.

Awapara Ram: (Ovis aries) They are a really energetic breed because of their small physique and long legs. Arapawa Sheep are a type of feral sheep that are primarily found on Arapaoa Island in the Marlborough Sounds, New Zealand. Since their introduction in 1867, they have most likely lived alone on this island. Here at Kuranui we are blessed to have the opportunity to allow a specific number of this species to be hunted each season. Although there are numerous explanations for how the sheep got here, it is widely acknowledged that they are descended from Australian Merino strains. This breed is considered “rare” according to the New Zealand Rare Breeds Conservation Society. Making them a prime contestant for your pick of premium trophy. This breed is primarily cultivated for its wool. Rams have lengthy spiral horns that are frequently over one meter long, whereas ewes have horns (3 ft) making them a sought after trophy. This breed frequently seems slumped over and carries its head and tail down most of the time since they live in a highly difficult and mountainous environment. They are a really energetic breed because of their small physique and long legs. The ears are slender, and the head and face are clear and small.

Feral Goat: (Capra hircus) Feral Goats here at Kuranui can have horns measuring over 40” tip to tip making them grand mount. They are a really energetic breed because of their small physique and long legs. Feral Goats were also introduced for meat by the early settlers and now overpopulate farmland, and hunting conservation. The feral goat is a very agile and wary species, commonly seen from mountain ranges to scrub, adapting to various New Zealand environments. Colors of the feral goat range from white, russet, brown to black or a combination of these colors.

Other opportunities: Trout fishing & Possum shooting New Zealand is renowned for its world class Trout fishing lakes, streams and backcountry rivers. Home to both rainbow and brown trout. Kuranui can offer you personalized fishing guiding services whether you’re fishing for the table, a trophy or a remote backcountry experience. If you do decide to bring a trout home, our chef will prepare it with the bones removed, mildly marinated, and smoked as a tasty appetizer for your evening meal. We have some of the best trout fishing waters in New Zealand nearby, or we can organize a private helicopter journey to some of the more pristine, remote and wild backcountry areas. Possums are a nocturnal pest here in New Zealand, sneaking into our native bird nests eating eggs and decreasing the population of birds. Possums don’t have any natural predators to keep them under control, so they are commonly overpopulating the entire country. As an easy animal to hunt at night, all is needed is a spotlight. This is a great opportunity to take out the whole group and have an exciting night together. A visit to Kuranui would be incomplete without a nighttime spotlight hunt for possums and rabbits.
